  • The genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 314:5801, s. 941-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes.

  • Introduction of an interactive tool (the Dental Trauma Guide) in the undergraduate dental teaching to manage traumatic dental injuries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Dental Traumatology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1600-4469 .- 1600-9657. ; 37:5, s. 717-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Aims Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are complex problems where lack of proper care may result in serious complications. The need to improve the management of TDI is a frequently addressed concern. Methods of improvement in their diagnosis and management are continuously evolving. The interactive Internet tool, the Dental Trauma Guide (DTG), helps to simplify diagnostic and management dilemmas. However, it is not a freely available tool. The aim of the current study was to assess the knowledge and diagnostic skills of undergraduate dental students with access to the DTG compared with students without such access, in order to validate and promote this tool in dental education. Materials and Methods Two groups of students were randomly selected where one group of final year dental undergraduate students were exposed to lectures, demonstrations, discussions and tutorials on the management of TDI according to the standard undergraduate curriculum in Sri Lanka. Another test group of 21 students were provided with access to DTG during their training in paediatric dentistry. At the end of the study period, students were assessed on their knowledge of TDI using MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) and OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examination), based on the DTG. Results The students with access to the DTG were more knowledgeable in providing the correct answers to three out of the seven OSCE questions. Evaluation based on the MCQs did not reveal a significant difference (p = .913). However, users of the DTG showed a statistically significant difference with better overall knowledge based on their answers (p = .028). Following this period of evaluation, all of the students were provided with access to the DTG to supplement their learning experience. Conclusion The Dental Trauma Guide is a useful supplementary tool for undergraduate students to arrive at a correct diagnosis and treatment plan for TDI.

  • Electrical and complex dielectric behaviour of composite polymer electrolyte based on PEO, alumina and tetrapropylammonium iodide
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ionics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0947-7047 .- 1862-0760. ; 23:7, s. 1711-1719
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, the electrical, dielectric and morphological analysis of composite solid polymer electrolytes containing polyethylene oxide, alumina nano-fillers and tetrapropylammonium iodide are conducted. The temperature dependence of conductivity shows activation energy of 0.23, 0.20 and 0.29 eV for electrolytes containing 0, 5 and 15 wt.% alumina, respectively, when data fitted to the Arrhenius equation. These activation energy values are in good agreement with those determined from dielectric measurements. The result confirms the fact that conductivity is activated by both the mobility and the charge carrier density. The conductivity isotherms demonstrated the existence of two peaks, at 5 and 15 wt.% Al2O3 composition. The highest conductivity values of 2.4 × 10−4, 3.3 × 10−4 and 4.2 × 10−4 S cm−1 are obtained for the sample with 5 wt.% Al2O3 at 0, 12 and 24 °C, respectively, suggesting an enhancement of conductivity compared with that of alumina free samples.

  • Dataset on seston and zooplankton fatty-acid compositions, zooplankton and phytoplankton biomass, and environmental conditions of coastal and offshore waters of the northern Baltic Sea
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Data in Brief. - : Elsevier. - 2352-3409. ; 42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyzed the taxonomic and fatty-acid (FA) compositions of phytoplankton and zooplankton, and the environmental conditions at three coastal and offshore stations of the northern Baltic Sea. Plankton samples for FA analyses were collected under the framework of sampling campaigns of the Swedish National Marine Monitoring program in September 2017. Monitoring data of phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass, and environmental variables at each station were extracted from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute database (https://sharkweb.smhi.se/). Monthly phytoplankton biomass at each station in July-September 2017 was aggregated by class (i.e., chyrsophytes, cryptophytes, dinoflagellates, diatoms, euglenophytes, cyanobacteria, etc.). Zooplankton biomass in September 2017 was aggregated by major taxa (i.e., Acartia sp. [Calanoida], Eurytemora affinis [Calanoida], Cladocera, Limnocalanus macrurus and other copepods (i.e. excluding Eurytemora and Acartia)). Environmental variables monthly monitored in January-October 2017 included salinity, concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, humic substances, total nitrogen and total phosphorus. These variables were measured from 0 to 10 m depth below water surface, and the depth-integrated averages were used for data analyses. Seston and zooplankton (Eurytemora affinis, Acartia sp. and Cladocera) FA compositions were analyzed using gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC–MS). Our dataset could provide new insights into how taxonomic composition and biochemical quality of the planktonic food chains change with the environmental conditions in subarctic marine ecosystems.

  • Seawater browning alters community composition and reduces nutritional quality of plankton in a subarctic marine ecosystem
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. - : Canadian Science Publishing. - 0706-652X .- 1205-7533. ; 79:8, s. 1291-1301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inflows of coloured terrestrial organic matter cause seawater browning and reduced phytoplankton production in subarctic coastal ecosystems, potentially deteriorating the nutritional quality of marine food webs. We analyzed the fatty-acid (FA) compositions of seston and the zooplankton taxa Eurytemora affinis and cladocerans at three locations of the northern Baltic Sea. At the coastal and northerly locations, salinity and phosphorus concentrations were low, while concentrations of humic substances (i.e., terrestrial organic matter) were high. The southerly location showed the opposite trend. The ratio between alga-specific ?3 polyunsaturated FA and terrigenous monounsaturated FA (MUFA) in Eurytemora decreased from south to north, as did the ratio between the alga-specific docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and terrigenous MUFA in cladocerans. With increasing humic substances, the biomass of DHA-rich phytoplankton decreased and the zooplankton MUFA content increased. Our results indicate that coloured terrestrial organic matter alters the phytoplankton composition, consequently affecting the zooplankton nutritional quality.
