  • ESMO / ASCO Recommendations for a Global Curriculum in Medical Oncology Edition 2016
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ESMO Open. - : Elsevier BV. - 2059-7029. ; 1:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) are publishing a new edition of the ESMO/ ASCO Global Curriculum (GC) thanks to contribution of 64 ESMOappointed and 32 ASCO-appointed authors. First published in 2004 and updated in 2010, the GC edition 2016 answers to the need for updated recommendations for the training of physicians in medical oncology by defining the standard to be fulfilled to qualify as medical oncologists. At times of internationalisation of healthcare and increased mobility of patients and physicians, the GC aims to provide state-of-the-art cancer care to all patients wherever they live. Recent progress in the field of cancer research has indeed resulted in diagnostic and therapeutic innovations such as targeted therapies as a standard therapeutic approach or personalised cancer medicine specialised training for medical oncology trainees. Thus, several new chapters on technical contents such as molecular pathology, translational research or molecular imaging and on conceptual attitudes towards human principles like genetic counselling or survivorship have been integrated in the GC. The GC edition 2016 consists of 12 sections with 17 subsections, 44 chapters and 35 subchapters, respectively. Besides renewal in its contents, the GC underwent a principal formal change taking into consideration modern didactic principles. It is presented in a template-based format that subcategorises the detailed outcome requirements into learning objectives, awareness, knowledge and skills. Consecutive steps will be those of harmonising and implementing teaching and assessment strategies.

  • Globalization of P4 Medicine: Predictive, Personalized, Preemptive, and Participatory-Summary of the Proceedings of the Eighth International Symposium of the International Society for Strategic Studies in Radiology, August 27-29, 2009
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: RADIOLOGY. - : Radiological Society of North America. - 0033-8419 .- 1527-1315. ; 258:2, s. 571-582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In August 2009, the International Society for Strategic Studies in Radiology held its eighth biennial meeting. The program focused on the globalization of predictive medicine-or P4 medicine-as it relates to the practice of radiology and radiology research. P4 medicine refers to predictive, personalized, preemptive, and participatory medicine and was the inspiration of Elias Zerhouni, MD, former director of the National Institutes of Health. This article is a summary of some of the key concepts presented at the meeting by an international group of radiologists, imaging scientists, and leaders of industry. In predictive medicine, imaging and imaging-related technologies will likely play an increasing role in the early detection of disease and, thus, the preemption of the development of advanced, hard-to-treat disease. Research into systems biology and molecular imaging promises to personalize medicine, facilitating the provision of the right care to the right patient at the right time. In participatory medicine, increasing interactions with referring physicians and patients will be helpful in raising awareness and recognition of the role of radiologists and will have a positive effect on professionalism. There is also a need to increase awareness of the vital role of radiologists as imaging and radiation safety experts who evaluate the necessity and appropriateness of examinations, monitor performance quality, and are available for postexamination consultations.

  • Systems Biology of Acidophile Biofilms for Efficient Metal Extraction
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Biotechnologies in Mining Industry and Environmental Engineering. - 9783038356783 ; , s. 312-315
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This European Union ERASysApp funded study will investigate one of the major drawbacks of bioleaching of the copper containing mineral chalcopyrite, namely the long lag phase between construction and inoculation of bioleaching heaps and the release of dissolved metals. In practice, this lag phase can be up to three years and the long time period adds to the operating expenses of bioheaps for chalcopyrite dissolution. One of the major time determining factors in bioleaching heaps is suggested to be the speed of mineral colonization by the acidophilic microorganisms present. By applying confocal microscopy, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, bioinformatics, and computer modeling the authors aim to investigate the processes leading up to, and influencing the attachment of three moderately thermophilic sulfur-and/or iron-oxidizing model species:Acidithiobacillus caldus, Leptospirillum ferriphilum, and Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans. Stirred tank reactors containing chalcopyrite concentrate will be inoculated with these species in various orders and proportions and the effects on the lag phase and rates of metal release will be compared. Meanwhile, confocal microscopy studies of cell attachment to chalcopyrite mineral particles, as well as metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics of the formed biofilms will further increase understanding of the attachment process and help develop a model thereof. By fulfilling our goal to decrease the length of the lag phase of chalcopyrite bioleaching heaps we hope to increase their economic feasibility and therefore, industrial interest in bioleaching as a sustainable technology.

  • High aboveground carbon stock of African tropical montane forests
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 596:7873, s. 536-542
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tropical forests store 40–50per cent of terrestrial vegetation carbon. However, spatial variations in aboveground live tree biomass carbon (AGC) stocks remain poorly understood, in particular in tropical montane forests. Owing to climatic and soil changes with increasing elevation, AGC stocks are lower in tropical montane forests compared with lowland forests. Here we assemble and analyse a dataset of structurally intact old-growth forests (AfriMont) spanning 44 montane sites in 12 African countries. We find that montane sites in the AfriMont plot network have a mean AGC stock of 149.4megagrams of carbon per hectare (95% confidence interval 137.1–164.2), which is comparable to lowland forests in the African Tropical Rainforest Observation Network4 and about 70per cent and 32per cent higher than averages from plot networks in montane and lowland forests in the Neotropics, respectively. Notably, our results are two-thirds higher than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change default values for these forests in Africa8. We find that the low stem density and high abundance of large trees of African lowland forests is mirrored in the montane forests sampled. This carbon store is endangered: we estimate that 0.8 million hectares of old-growth African montane forest have been lost since 2000. We provide country-specific montane forest AGC stock estimates modelled from our plot network to helpto guide forest conservation and reforestation interventions. Our findings highlight the need for conserving these biodiverse and carbon-rich ecosystems.

  • Common variants at TRAF3IP2 are associated with susceptibility to psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 42:11, s. 996-999
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory joint disease that is distinct from other chronic arthritides and which is frequently accompanied by psoriasis vulgaris (PsV) and seronegativity for rheumatoid factor. We conducted a genome-wide association study in 609 German individuals with PsA (cases) and 990 controls with replication in 6 European cohorts including a total of 5,488 individuals. We replicated PsA associations at HLA-C and IL12B and identified a new association at TRAF3IP2 (rs13190932, P = 8.56 × 10⁻¹⁷). TRAF3IP2 was also associated with PsV in a German cohort including 2,040 individuals (rs13190932, P = 1.95 × 10⁻³). Sequencing of the exons of TRAF3IP2 identified a coding variant (p.Asp10Asn, rs33980500) as the most significantly associated SNP (P = 1.13 × 10⁻²⁰, odds ratio = 1.95). Functional assays showed reduced binding of this TRAF3IP2 variant to TRAF6, suggesting altered modulation of immunoregulatory signals through altered TRAF interactions as a new and shared pathway for PsA and PsV.

  • Mobocertinib in Patients with EGFR Exon 20 Insertion-Positive Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (MOON): An International Real-World Safety and Efficacy Analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Molecular Sciences. - : MDPI. - 1661-6596 .- 1422-0067. ; 25:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • EGFR exon 20 (EGFR Ex20) insertion mutations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are insensitive to traditional EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Mobocertinib is the only approved TKI specifically designed to target EGFR Ex20. We performed an international, real-world safety and efficacy analysis on patients with EGFR Ex20-positive NSCLC enrolled in a mobocertinib early access program. We explored the mechanisms of resistance by analyzing postprogression biopsies, as well as cross-resistance to amivantamab. Data from 86 patients with a median age of 67 years and a median of two prior lines of treatment were analyzed. Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) occurred in 95% of patients. Grade >= 3 TRAEs were reported in 38% of patients and included diarrhea (22%) and rash (8%). In 17% of patients, therapy was permanently discontinued, and two patients died due to TRAEs. Women were seven times more likely to discontinue treatment than men. In the overall cohort, the objective response rate to mobocertinib was 34% (95% CI, 24-45). The response rate in treatment-naive patients was 27% (95% CI, 8-58). The median progression-free and overall survival was 5 months (95% CI, 3.5-6.5) and 12 months (95% CI, 6.8-17.2), respectively. The intracranial response rate was limited (13%), and one-third of disease progression cases involved the brain. Mobocertinib also showed antitumor activity following EGFR Ex20-specific therapy and vice versa. Potential mechanisms of resistance to mobocertinib included amplifications in MET, PIK3CA, and NRAS. Mobocertinib demonstrated meaningful efficacy in a real-world setting but was associated with considerable gastrointestinal and cutaneous toxicity.

  • Probing the gravitational redshift with an Earth-orbiting satellite
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section A: General, Atomic and Solid State Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9601. ; 382:33, s. 2192-2198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an approach to testing the gravitational redshift effect using the RadioAstron satellite. The experiment is based on a modification of the Gravity Probe A scheme of nonrelativistic Doppler compensation and benefits from the highly eccentric orbit and ultra-stable atomic hydrogen maser frequency standard of the RadioAstron satellite. Using the presented techniques we expect to reach an accuracy of the gravitational redshift test of order 10−5, a magnitude better than that of Gravity Probe A. Data processing is ongoing, our preliminary results agree with the validity of the Einstein Equivalence Principle.
