  • Market innovation in the transport and heavy vehicle market
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 27th Annual NOFOMA-Conference, Molde, 3-5 June, 2015..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to generate a greater understanding of the interrelatedness of new business models in the truck market and developments in the road transport sector.Design/methodology/approachBased on a three year research project in cooperation with a European heavy vehicle manufacturer, we present short case descriptions showing some of the main developments in the European trucking and transport markets. FindingsNew business models emerge both in the heavy vehicle and transportation markets, in complex ways involving multiple actors.  The impetus for the models can come from several direction but the final impact must be negotiated and cannot be planned by a single actor.Research limitations/implications The research looks at a selection of cases and business models to demonstrate changes and the relations between the markets, and does not claim to be exhaustive in terms of the different business models in the European market. Practical implications There is a distinct trend to greater specialization and the need for innovation to survive given the strong pressures in the commoditized transport market. Our findings show conflicting trends in terms of social implications, with improved ecological impact but the risk of worse conditions for driver. Original/valueThe paper considers the development of new business models and implications on the market from the point of view of the firms actually using the business models.  This shows how different business models can co-exist and involve different types of rationalities.

  • A rythmanalytic approach to understand the problematic nature of supply chain integration: The case of a customer ordered production strategy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: the 27th IMP conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Implementing a customer ordered production strategy involves changes in supply chain integration compared to if production was based on forecasts of demand. In a study of Volvo Cars’ customer ordered strategy it was found that the degree of implementation changed over time, especially in relation to business cycles. It seems, with reference to statements made by respondents involved in practice at different stages in the supply chain, that there exists different “world views” and logics of action depending of the actors’ position in the chain: A business logic downstream and an industrial logic upstream from the assembler (Volvo Cars split in “manufacturing” and “sales”). Time, space and energy are different in the logics. Transport providers adapt and coordinate activities with logic of their own .To understand time, space and energy we refer to the ideas put forward by Lefebvre on rhythm in everyday life. It is important to be aware of ongoing changes in the everydayness for supply chain integration knowledge. Integration needs to be handled as a process, it is not given by plans and procedures as state. We interpret the empirical findings by applying Lefebvre’s conceptual framework. The approach facilitates a better understanding of the supply chain integration process and potentialities of temporal alignment.

  • Enacting outsourcing : An innovation process perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport and Supply Chain Management. - : AOSIS. - 1995-5235 .- 2310-8789. ; 4:1, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Much research has been done on outsourcing. However, we still know little about outsourcing based on a social process view on innovation. Outsourcing is an innovation as a logistics-related process that is perceived as new by the adopter. We will explore and analyse an outsourcing idea, its development and implementation, from an innovation perspective. The development is studied in a qualitative, long-term process study. The analysis draws on Hoholm’s (2009) model of innovation processes. It extends the applicability of this innovation model and its methodology of following the action into logistics and supply chain management (SCM) research. The outsourcing process is an innovation that develops in a rational way based on the incremental process because of its actor-network and simultaneous reflection. Interactions and confrontations come about because of involved contrary forces such as competing objectives. The model explains the practice of SCM innovation and increases the understanding of dynamics and complexity. The process study brings insights to cause-effect relations in the development of outsourcing that are consequential to innovative logistics and SCM.

  • Kundorderstyrning : Ett förvånansvärt trubbigt verktyg
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Marknadsorientering. - Malmö : Liber. - 9789147088928

  • Road haulier competition : Implications for supply chain integration
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 26th Conference of the Nordic Logistics Research Network.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose Road hauliers are under substantial competitive pressure. We aim to better understand road haulier competition and its implications in terms of integration and competence in the logistics service supply chain and industrial supply chain. Design/methodology/approach Comparative cases of trucking and competition are constructed from Swedish and Polish case studies (interviews, observation and secondary material). Our qualitative approach involves researchers and actors of the road transport chain that collaboratively create understanding of development in the road transport business. Findings A transaction and low cost focus might lead to prices which cannot cover the normal expenses for vehicle maintenance, salary and fuel, exploiting drivers sleeping in the truck cabins for weeks and vehicles which are not well maintained. We also find low cost and competent small transport firms driving vehicles with low environmental impact, and with good safety performance. Many industrial firms strive for integration but neglect integration of the logistics and transportation services chain, thus sacrificing integration and competence in the supply chain as well as sustainability. Research limitations/implications The study explores rather than proves shortcomings in supply chain management. Future process research approaches can facilitate theory building on operational and strategic interactions of the industrial supply chain and the logistics service chain. Practical implications By having CSR requirements but not enforcing them in the transport chain, transport buyers may be contributing to a system of extreme low cost transportation competition where long-term performance is poor especially on social and environmental aspects. Original/value The industrial supply chain and the logistics service chain is investigated as an interrelated network.

  • Road Haulier Competition : Implications for Supply Chain Integration
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Supply Chain - Perspectives and Applications. - Rijeka : IntechOpen. - 9781837691067
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Road freight competition is playing out in deregulated markets. The EU single market is a market with abundant responses in terms of haulier strategic actions. This chapter situates the crucial role of road haulier strategies in the logistics service supply chain and industrial supply chain to achieve sustainability. Competitive and sustainable transport depends on effective transport services, vehicles and transport infrastructure, and conditions that foster the development of transport and logistics services. By examining how four case firms develop competences and make use of available resources we develop insights into road haulier competition and its implications. The chapter contributes to understanding how road hauliers are part of logistics service chains as well as industrial supply chains and how the many links and relationships increase the magnitude and implications of hauliers’ performances.

  • Strategic development of third-party logistics providers (TPLs) : “Going under the floor” or “raising the roof”?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 97, s. 183-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary (third-party logistics providers) TPLs are in danger of being stuck in the middle, unable to perform customer adaptation as well as before and unable to achieve sufficient economies of scale. This conceptual paper aims to explore challenges facing the strategic development of TPLs within a context of increased digitalization, e-commerce and servitization. There are two apparent strategic paths. Under circumstances of strong price pressure, there is demand for standardized TPL services offering simplicity, minimalism and functionality based on digitalization, e-commerce and servitization. Alternatively, with market developments responsive to supply chain complexity, digitalization, e-commerce and servitization enable development towards innovation and change. We conclude that these developments do not invalidate existing frameworks for TPL strategies but contribute alternative strategies. We formulate three propositions for each strategic path. To avoid being stuck in the middle, TPLs are encouraged to either develop efficient services through servitized logistics chains and digital solutions or develop advanced solutions to integrate the consumer into the logistics network system through competencies to control increased levels of complexity.

  • Third-party logistics providers’ strategic development in Sweden : Learning from a crisis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport and Supply Chain Management. - : AOSIS. - 2310-8789 .- 1995-5235. ; 16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The enacted sensemaking of third-party logistics (TPL) providers during the pandemic crisis may present an opportunity to explore their strategic operations. Objectives: The aim is to understand the TPL strategic implications related to a crisis and specifically how TPL providers make sense of and respond to crises. The two research questions are as follows: How has the COVID-19 pandemic crisis affected the business operations of TPL providers? What have TPL providers learnt from enacting the crisis, and how has this experience affected their strategic development?Method: We conduct an abductive study using combined data from interviews and a targeted archive search. The data are focused on the Swedish context and on a period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Three distinct groups of TPL providers have different sense and action processes impacting their business operations. This research shows how an understanding of servitisation is relevant for TPL theory. Finally, we develop the strategic perspective of TPL providers by defining TPL providers as value-cocreating relationships that can help manage the complexities of logistics services. Conclusion: This research shows that TPL providers play an important role in crises, as they contribute to solving customer problems. This role appears to be strengthened during crises, but it imposes great demands on TPL providers.Contribution: Third-party logistics providers work with their customers during crises. The sensemaking view emphasises the importance of personnel, organisational commitment, capacity and expectations during crises. This is an interplay that requires adaptation to short-term changes in operational processes and adaptability in long-term operations.

  • Who is the customer? On the nature of customer representations in supply chains
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: the 27th IMP conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the notion of customer orientation in a supply chain. The analysis draw on the market studies approach (Araujo et al 2010) to look at how multiple customer meanings are (or are not) aligned by a supply chain strategy. By using empirical material of a customer ordered production study (Borgström 2010), we reflect on what constitutes customer knowledge and what processes are involved in making up this knowledge. We show how customer orientation is put into practice, what devices, metrologies and skills bring it to life, and how it is used in attempts to shape relationships in the supply chain.

  • Causal or effectual? Dynamics of decision making logics in servitization
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 82, s. 15-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores servitization as an innovative market strategy for manufacturers and investigates how the decision making logics change over time in the servitization transformation process. Effectuation theory is applied to examine servitization as a new theoretical exploration. A longitudinal case study of a global heavy vehicle manufacturer's servitization process in China reveals that the decision makers adjust their decision making logics depending on the stage of the servitization process and associated risk patterns. As the servitization process evolves into a more sophisticated stage, decision makers will change their decision making logics from a causation dominant logic to an effectuation dominant logic in order to cope with the increased risks. Effectuation theory originally developed from entrepreneurship research is found to be a valid theory for the explanation of the risk and uncertainty control behaviors in the servitization transformation process of manufacturing firms.

  • Innovation and network development of logistics firms
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This compilation thesis consists of a cover and five appended articles. The research purpose of this thesis is to investigate the third party logistics phenomena from the logistics firm’s perspective with a focus on logistics innovation and network development. The thesis applies a qualitative research method and employs multiple case studies. Resource-based view, industrial network approach and strategy-as-practice perspective have been applied and combined to analyze the empirical findings. It is found that logistics firms focus on customers’ requirements and they provide differentiated services accordingly. Based on the type of customers and the region served, each logistics firm innovates in a different way. The logistics innovation process is complicated and it includes both top-down and bottom-up process. Both intra-organizational interactions and inter-organizational interactions are critical for logistics firms to generate logistics innovation. Besides, the interaction capabilities are crucial for logistics firms to innovate. The development of interaction capabilities enables logistics firms to proactively identify customer needs and to translate customer requirements into new service offerings. The development of interaction capabilities also guides logistics firms to innovate in the right direction and helps them to overcome barriers. Further, a theoretical model is developed to illustrate that logistics firms have clear differences in capabilities and network focus. These firms follow different dominating logics of value creation, developing their service networks in various ways. The thesis addresses two critical issues, logistics innovation and network development. Theoretically, it contributes to the third party logistics literature in general and to the logistics innovation research in particular as well as the network development of logistics firms. Adopting several theoretical frameworks, the thesis takes a closer look at the logistics innovation process in logistics firms. Empirically, the thesis covers logistics firms both in Sweden and China, turning it into an international investigation of the how and why of logistics innovation.

  • Innovation in an international third party logistics firm : a strategy-as-practice perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport and Supply Chain Management. - : AOSIS. - 1995-5235 .- 2310-8789. ; 4:1, s. 69-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Logistics firms play an important role in the economy but they have received little attention in strategic management and logistics management literature. This paper intends to fill in this gap by looking a specific strategising process, innovation, at an international third party logistics (TPL) firm. Using strategy as a practice perspective, the paper describes and analyses how innovation emerges and evolves over time. Drawing on an in-depth longitudinal case study of an international TPL firm, this study shows that intra-organisational interactions as well as inter-organisational interactions are essential in the innovation process at logistics firms. The innovation process at logistics firms is complicated and includes both top-down and bottom-up processes. It is vertically decoupled and multidirectional. Innovation at logistics firms emerges as a combination of an ad hoc response to a customer request and a purpose-driven interactive process.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this research is to explore logistics innovation at third-party logistics (3PL) firms in China. Case studies of 3PL firms in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China (Greater China region) have been conducted. Based on interviews, observation and documentation, a qualitative case-study approach has been followed. Drawing on case-study findings, the driving forces, barriers, and effects of logistics innovation on 3PL firms in China are discussed. Customer requirements, environmental factors, efficiency and effectiveness enhancement, and provision of wider service portfolios and differentiation are strong rationales for 3PL firms to innovate in China. In comparison, cost, time, and employee ability are crucial barriers hindering 3PL firms from innovating in China. Logistics innovation can lead to positive operational performance by increasing efficiency, effectiveness, and service portfolios. Logistics innovation is also positively related to the enhanced relationship with clients, growing sales, reputation and financial performance.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 40:6, s. 1004-1011
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The research purpose of this paper is to describe and analyse how three basic types of logistics firms differ in terms of their core capabilities and network development as well as the effects of the difference. Based on the resource-based view and the industrial network approach, a conceptual framework is developed to differentiate logistics firms. Two case studies of logistics firms are used as examples to demonstrate how the framework can be used. Logistics firms have clear differences in capabilities and network focus. These firms follow different dominating logics of value creation that make them develop in different ways and think totally differently. This research enhances our understanding of the different logics of logistics firms and their interdependence. They are complementary and interacting in the logistics service supply chain. Moving between the basic types of logistics firms means changing the capabilities and network focus, which is costly and difficult. The conceptual framework can be used as a tool to comprehend multiple types of logistics firms. It also helps us to analyze related strategic moves.
