  • Nitrogen Solubility in Alloy Systems Relevant to Stainless Steels
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. A. - : Springer Nature. - 1073-5623 .- 1543-1940. ; 52:9, s. 3811-3820
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-performance stainless steels are alloyed with nitrogen for several different reasons. For the austenitic grades, the kinetics of deleterious phase transformations are delayed, the strength is increased, and the corrosion resistance is improved. For duplex steels, the weldability and corrosion resistance depend directly on their nitrogen contents. Reliable databases are crucial for the development of new stainless steels and their processing. In order to calibrate the existing thermodynamic data, a series of experiments was undertaken. Several laboratory alloys in Fe–Cr–X systems, where X = Ni, Mn, Cu, were reacted with nitrogen gas at nitrogen activities 0.5 and 1 in the temperature range from 1050 °C to 1350 °C and subsequently analyzed for nitrogen solubility and phase constitution. A novel, simplified experimental technique was used, providing a dew point that is low enough to allow for fast nitrogen transport through the specimen surface, ensuring equilibrium conditions. The results are compared to thermodynamic equilibrium calculations.

  • Related in death? A curious case of a foetus hidden in bishop Peder Winstrup's coffin in Lund, Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Archaeological Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-409X .- 2352-4103. ; 37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When the famous bishop of Lund, Peder Winstrup, died in 1679 he was laid to rest in a family crypt in Lund Cathedral alongside his wife. Following a restoration of the Cathedral in the late 19th century, Peder Winstrup’s coffin was moved to the crypt, as the family grave was dismantled. In 2012, a decision was made to move his remains to a different location presenting scientists with an opportunity to investigate bishop’s mummified remains. Unexpectedly, hidden underneath Winstrup’s body, a small bundle containing mummified remains of a 5–6-month-old foetus was found. This finding prompted questions regarding the possible relation between both individuals with most hypotheses suggesting no relation and an opportunistic character of the placement of the foetus in bishop’s coffin. Here we test the hypotheses using ancient DNA genomics, including mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome data, as tools for kinship analyses. We identified a second-degree kinship relation, which, in combination with genealogical analysis, suggests a grandparent-grandchild relation, as highly probable affiliation.

  • Related in Death? Further Insights on the Curious Case of Bishop Peder Winstrup and His Grandchild's Burial
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Heritage. - 2571-9408. ; 7:2, s. 576-584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2021, we published the results of genomic analyses carried out on the famous bishop of Lund, Peder Winstrup, and the mummified remains of a 5–6-month-old fetus discovered in the same burial. We concluded that the two individuals were second-degree relatives and explored the genealogy of Peder Winstrup to further understand the possible relation between them. Through this analysis, we found that the boy was most probably Winstrup’s grandson and that the two were equally likely related either through Winstrup’s son, Peder, or his daughter, Anna Maria von Böhnen. To further resolve the specific kinship relation, we generated more genomic data from both Winstrup and the boy and implemented more recently published analytical tools in detailed Y chromosome- and X chromosome-based kinship analyses to distinguish between the competing hypotheses regarding maternal and paternal relatedness. We found that the individuals’ Y chromosome lineages belonged to different sub-lineages and that the X-chromosomal kinship coefficient calculated between the two individuals were elevated, suggesting a grandparent–grandchild relation through a female, i.e., Anna Maria von Böhnen. Finally, we also performed metagenomic analyses, which did not identify any pathogens that could be unambiguously associated with the fatalities.

  • High-Temperature Phase Equilibria of Duplex Stainless Steels Assessed with a Novel In-Situ Neutron Scattering Approach
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1073-5623 .- 1543-1940. ; 48:4, s. 1562-1571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Duplex stainless steels are designed to solidify with ferrite as the parent phase, with subsequent austenite formation occurring in the solid state, implying that, thermodynamically, a fully ferritic range should exist at high temperatures. However, computational thermodynamic tools appear currently to overestimate the austenite stability of these systems, and contradictory data exist in the literature. In the present work, the high-temperature phase equilibria of four commercial duplex stainless steel grades, denoted 2304, 2101, 2507, and 3207, with varying alloying levels were assessed by measurements of the austenite-to-ferrite transformation at temperatures approaching 1673 K (1400 °C) using a novel in-situ neutron scattering approach. All grades became fully ferritic at some point during progressive heating. Higher austenite dissolution temperatures were measured for the higher alloyed grades, and for 3207, the temperature range for a single-phase ferritic structure approached zero. The influence of temperatures in the region of austenite dissolution was further evaluated by microstructural characterization using electron backscattered diffraction of isothermally heat-treated and quenched samples. The new experimental data are compared to thermodynamic calculations, and the precision of databases is discussed.
