- Utilising data gathered through ethnographic fieldwork this article investigates (a) how asylum seekers portray family life in relation to their decision to flee their country of origin, and (b) how asylum seekers’ ways of doing family life intersect with the Swedish migration context. Analytically, the article leans on sociologically informed theories of family practices and a conceptual discussion on deportability. The results show how family life among the participants is reconstituted both in terms of geographical closeness and distance, and in terms of ideas about a previous family life in the country of origin and hopes for a possible future in Sweden. The insecurity and the strains placed on people and their family bonds by current migration policies, and the risk of deportation, are interpreted as a specific form of administrative violence that cuts into family practices, serving to maintain physical and emotional distance between family members and break down social bonds.

- The aim of this article is to envision a way of bringing political dimensions into the mainstream of social work. Departing from a critique of the long-standing inability of conventional social work to address social problems in political terms, the article conceptualises social work as a profoundly political terrain and argues for the need to make space for politics at all levels – from the administrative procedures of statutory social work to advocacy campaigns and community work aimed at political reform. By using the works of Chantal Mouffe, the article brings together radical political theory and the critique of a depoliticised profession to suggest a framework for the politicisation of social work. If social work is to credibly invoke ideals such as social justice and human rights, it must create a space where such aspirations can be politically articulated and claimed as part of an agonistic struggle to radicalise democracy. Given the profoundly political nature of a discipline and profession that deals with human suffering, the article frames social work as an agonistic project with ambitions to take an active part in political conjunctures, as well as in the construction of political visions towards a more just world. Konventionellt socialt arbete har i decennier kritiserats för sin oförmåga att definiera och adressera sociala problem politiskt. Mot bakgrund av denna kritik undersöker artikeln hur politiska dimensioner kan föras in i det sociala arbetets huvudfåra. Vi argumenterar för en förståelse av socialt arbete som en i grunden politisk praktik samt för behovet att beakta politiska dimensioner på alla nivåer – från den lagstadgade praktikens administrativa processer till samhällsarbete som syftar till politiska reformer. Genom att sammanföra Chantal Mouffes politiska teori med trenderna inom en avpolitiserad profession föreslår vi en modell för det sociala arbetets politisering. Om socialt arbete trovärdigt ska kunna förankra sin praktik i ideal som social rättvisa och mänskliga rättigheter, behöver det verka inom ett utrymme där sådana strävanden kan artikuleras politiskt och sättas i anspråk som del i en agonistisk kamp för att radikalisera demokratin. Med tanke på disciplinens och professionens politiska karaktär föreslår vi en konceptualisering av socialt arbete som ett agonistiskt projekt med ansvar att delta i politiska skeenden såväl som i skapandet av politiska visioner för en rättvisare värld.

- This article analyses the complex role of hope in relation to sport in the constrained lives of boys and young men who have experienced the Swedish asylum process. The data derives from an ethnographical longitudinal project on the social dimensions of hope in the asylum process. The project is situated in the context of escalating austerity politics and restrictions on asylum law and policy following the increased numbers of people seeking asylum in Sweden and other European countries in 2015. Through ethnographic cases, we expose how political decisions on national and supranational levels, amplified by economic structures, have put research participants in extremely precarious positions, affecting every aspect of their daily lives, including their sports life and ability to hope. Our analysis focuses on how sports may provide moments of realisation that generate distraction and an optimistic future orientation. Sports can also become everyday acts of resistance and manifestations of radical hope, opposing structural constraints. However, our research suggests that long-term, uncertain waiting coupled with neo-liberal labour exploitation creates situations where time and energy are taken over by external control, leading to an inability to maintain hope and experience sports as meaningful.

- Social service for sale. On social work in times of procurement Market reforms within the Swedish welfare sector have paved the way for models based on buying and selling welfare services. Public procurement constitutes a hub for commissioning and providing social services. The aim of this article is to explore how social work is shaped within a procurement context. Attention is directed to how social workers providing procured services describe their work. The empirical material consists of interviews with 16 providers of social services within different areas of a procured social work. The results show how procurement shapes the provision of social work, in terms of specifications of time and quantity, a quantification of the work performed with clients and how the framework of procurement shapes the client as a commission and a case. It is further shown how providers compensate for and deal with the framework of procured social work to meet the clients' needs. The results raise questions about the possibilities for procured social work regarding the services' demarcation, specialisation, and time frame.

- This article elaborates on a theoretically informed model of action rooted in the concept of professional resistance, which approaches groups of people and social problems in an alternative way to the dominant modes of managerial practice. The aim is to create conditions for approaching groups with social needs differently and to be able to act politically for social change within contemporary society. We will do this by exploring the potential of the assembly in line with Hardt, Negri and Butler, as well as the notion of transversal politics as developed by Yuval-Davis, for creating political subjectivities and alliances across differences. The reason for this theoretical approach is based on how the effects of categorisation and its political function can sometimes be challenging to identify. This is argued to especially be the case within a neoliberal capitalist society where categories induce competition between precarious groups to maintain the political status quo.

- At a food bank in Sweden, people stand in line, waiting to receive donated food, which can easily be interpreted as passively receiving hand-outs. But this line is full of activity, and it is very demanding to keep holding the line. However, a common perception of people in need of help from the social services and other authorities is that they need activation. This article aims to explore the relation between waiting and activity among the people visiting a food bank in Sweden. The line is used as an analytical tool to explore how people are balancing on a line between food insecurity and having food for the day, but also standing in a very concrete line, waiting for donations. The empirical material is based on a one-year ethnographic study of a food bank. It is argued that the people waiting are aligned to reach, in this case, the donated food, but consequently also aligned away from other possible solutions. This can be interpreted as a way of keeping people in line. Herein lies a challenge for social work: it risks reproducing social inequalities rather than working towards social justice and social change. Vid en matutdelning i Sverige står människor i kö och väntar på att få donerad mat, något som lätt kan tolkas som ett passivt mottagande av gåvor. Men den här linjen är full av aktivitet och det krävs väldigt mycket för att kunna fortsätta hålla linjen. En vanlig uppfattning av människor som behöver hjälp från socialtjänsten och andra myndigheter är dock att de behöver aktiveras. Syftet med denna artikel är att utforska förhållandet mellan väntan och aktivitet bland de människor som besöker en matutdelning i Sverige. Linjen används som ett analytiskt verktyg för att utforska hur människor balanserar på en gräns mellan matfattigdom och att ha mat för dagen, men hur de också står på en mycket konkret linje och väntar på donationer. Det empiriska materialet bygger på en ettårig etnografisk studie av en matutdelning. Artikeln argumenterar för att de som väntar riktas mot att nå, i det här fallet, den donerade maten, men följaktligen också därför bort från andra möjliga lösningar. Häri finns en utmaning för socialt arbete, att det riskerar att reproducera sociala ojämlikheter snarare än arbetar för social rättvisa och social förändring.

- Social work is often described as socially oriented, politically sensitive and as taking a critical approach to ‘social problems’. However, recently we have seen how this self-image has lost ground. In the present article, we have discussed how demands for evidence and scientific evaluations of social work have gradually pushed the discipline and practice in the direction of psychological measurements and methods. Here, we will identify a problematic development within the social and theoretical practice of social work, and make some suggestions regarding how to start discussing, analysing and dealing with this changing social landscape. We will identify some critical points and issues and present models of how to think about and develop a critical social work practice.

Another tendency within social work todayis the development of an evidence-based practice. This kind of social engineering,together with the theoretical confusion, might lead to the reproduction andstrengthening of dominant discourses and perspectives. Pointing out the need forcritical theory to transgress and resist hegemonic practices, the article aims topresent ideas on how to theoretically position social work practice within aframework of critical theory. The question is how to combine an ambition to developsuitable methods and to anchor social work in a sound social-scientific context withcritical theories concerning, for instance, gender, ethnicity, and class. It is suggestedthat a movement towards a more deconstructive and reflexive mode of thinking andpracticing social work, ‘doing social work’, would enable the field to become moreethical and reflexive.

- The aim of this article is to elaborate, theoretically, on the ambiguity of hope and its relation to social change in the asylum context. This ambiguity involves two different perspectives of hope. One more mundane view of hope where it is considered an emotion used to overcome complex issues and move towards a better situation in the future. A perspective often used by social and migration authorities to urge people to hope for a future should they submit to the authorities’ logic. The other perspective, more common in some research, challenges such positive connotations and argues that hope can put people in a position of suffering where hope may hinder or slow down the realisation of social change. With the aid of scholars who have theorised about hope and ethnographic cases from our research on hope in the asylum context, we develop a theoretical perspective on hope and social change. Our perspective includes concepts such as the governmentality of hope, fragmentation of hope and glimmers of hope. To grasp the relationship between hope and social change, we must account for several mixed emotions, such as feelings of despair, fear and bitterness, as well as glimmers of hope. Such mixtures of emotions may be essential to initiate and create social change. A central argument in this article is that an analysis of hope when people risk being governed by hope would benefit from a parallel analysis of social change.

- In this chapter, we will use ethnographic data to investigate how young unaccompanied people talk about school and school life in relation to racism and administrative violence. Like Philippe Bourgois (1995/2003), we argue that ethnography is suitable to studying how oppressive structures penetrate people’s everyday life, including their emotional life. We will first address how the young people themselves talk about the value of school and education. Going to school, however, is affected by specific terms and conditions, creating obstacles related to their position as unaccompanied young students. This is first discussed in general terms, before we delve into four themes related to such obstacles and challenges: family, religion, racism, as well as expectations and adaptations. The chapter ends with a summary discussion of what we consider precarious schooling.

- I den här boken möter vi människor som är i behov av skänkt mat för att klara dagen. De lever under prekära livsvillkor och tycks därför fastna mellan två tider. Dels förväntas de lägga sin begränsade tid på att vänta på stöd och hjälp, dels ska samma begränsade tid användas för att de på egen hand ska kunna ta sig ur sin situation. Den tid de tvingas lägga på att köa och vänta gör dock att det inte blir någon tid över till något annat. Tiden som passerar och det arbete som de lägger ner värderas sällan. I stället anses de behöva ”aktiveras” för att kunna förändra sin sociala situation. Författaren diskuterar den tid, väntan och prekaritet som människor i behov av mat för dagen utsätts för, men också hur det sociala arbetet behandlar dessa frågor och hur ansvaret för människors grundläggande sociala rätt alltmer har överlåtits på civilsamhället. Vidare beskrivs hur socialt arbete skulle kunna utvecklas från att vara reaktivt till att bli proaktivt genom att den tid som går åt för människor att upprätthålla minsta möjliga levnadsstandard och bidra till en social förändring på sina egna villkor värderas annorlunda.

- This symposium focuses on different perspectives on and approaches to political and emancipatory Social Work. The wide-reaching neo-liberalization and technocratisation of European welfare regimes have made it difficult for social workers to assert their role as the mediators between personal and wider structural and political social concerns. It is not sufficient to lament the implied de-politicisation of social work and to express further criticism of the social work profession for its apparent inability to envisage and address social problems in an explicitly political way. Instead, this symposium wishes to find a way forward that explains 121 the background to contemporary dilemmas faced by social workers and collects perspectives for their transformative handling. The symposium wishes to cover such themes as the role of social work in relation to politics on the local, regional, national and supranational levels; the role of critical, anti-oppressive and emancipatory traditions related to political and economic structures; activist social work, social mobilisation and collective strategies inside as well as outside the formal political system; agonistic approaches to social work, that is, perspectives which explore their productive potential of dissensus, conflict and resistance; theoretical elaborations within the field of social work that reach beyond a post-political paradigm; empirical examples, strategies and theoretical concepts on how to think and conduct social work in a politically effective way; and social work, citizenship and democracy. - Socialt arbete är per definition politiskt. Som Ian Cummins (2018: 28) skriver handlar inte denna politiska dimension om partipolitik, utan om att socialt arbete är en praktik där frågor om relationen mellan individ och stat och om vad som utgör ett rättvist samhälle är grundläggande. Trots att det sociala arbetet därigenom innehåller en politisk dimension talas det sällan om socialt arbete som just politiskt. Istället ses det som viktigt att särskilja det politiska från det sociala arbetets praktik. Varför ett sådant särskiljande av det politiska och praktiken görs menar jag går att finna i en bredare postpolitisk samhällelig trend där det politiska samtalet förskjuts alltmer bort från människors vardagsliv. Jag kommer i detta kapitel att diskutera särskiljandet av det politiska från socialt arbete och relatera det till en diskussion om varför ett sådant särskiljande aldrig kan vara en hållbar väg för socialt arbete. Diskussionen utgår i huvudsak från två konkreta exempel. Det första exemplet handlar om hur bostadsfrågan i socialt arbete inneburit att politik - och därigenom social förändring, överlåts till andra aktörer, till marknaden. Här diskuteras även hur det sociala arbetet genom ett förskjutande av det politiska riskerar att bli en kraft som endast upprätthåller status quo med socialt lidande som följd. - The purpose of the present article was to investigate social psychological processes leading to complex patterns of inclusion and exclusion. Following Sarah Ahmed’s theory of the phenomenology of ‘being stopped’, we explored young adults’ experiences of coming to or living in Sweden. The empirical material used consists of four strategically selected case studies. Living in the new Europe can be described as an experience of having to constantly deal with patterns of exclusion/inclusion. These patterns of exclusion/inclusion vary over time. They create new social bonds, strategies used to cope with prejudices and discrimination, and new identities. The four cases illustrated more or less successful attempts to deal with exclusion. Discrimination and the feeling of being different clearly affected young people’s self-esteem and life plans. Lack of integration is not only related to ethnicity and language, but also to connectedness to social and institutional structures.

- Using ethnographic data, this article aims to analyse the provision of informal care by asylum-seekers in Sweden and how this intersects with the(ir) asylum process. The article argues that asylum-seekers are framed by the Swedish welfare system and immigration authorities as ungrievable and deportable, which not only impedes their access to formal care systems and values, but also creates a strong need for informal care. Further, it is suggested that the informal care provided by asylum-seekers should be included in current debate on informal care and its impact on people’s lives.

- In recent decades, market reforms have paved the way for new forms to govern social work practice by means of procurement, cost efficiency, measurement, and freedom of choice. In this article, we draw attention to how clients are constructed in terms of motivation, in a context where social work is shaped by a procurement arrangement. Empirically, the article is based on interviews with social workers providing social services in a procurement setting, with a focus on how they describe their work in relation to presumptive clients, and specifically their work upon the motivation of clients. The analysis is informed by a constructionist approach to governing and the construction of clients. The results illustrate how the ideal client is constructed as motivated to choose a provider of social services matching their specific needs and interests as well as displaying a will to change and take part in the services offered. The social work appearing as desirable is based on a therapeutic rationality, with dialogue as the primary means of working upon the motivation of clients. The results further illustrate how different technologies (of the self and power) operate and intertwine in the work upon motivation of clients.

- Marknadsreformer inom den svenska välfärdssektorn har öppnat för köp- och säljmodeller av välfärdstjänster. Den offentlig upphandlingen utgör navet för beställningar och utförande av tjänster inom socialtjänsten¬. Syftet med denna artikel är att undersöka hur socialt arbete formas i en upphandlingskontext, med särskilt fokus på hur socialarbetare som arbetar med att utföra upphandlade tjänster beskriver sitt arbete. Materialet utgörs av intervjuer med 16 utförare av sociala tjänster inom olika områden av upphandlat social arbete. Resultaten visar hur upphandlingen skapar särskilda ramar för det sociala arbetets utförande i form av avgränsningar i tid och antal, en kvantifiering av det arbete som utförs med klienter samt hur dessa ramar formar klienten som en beställning och ett ärende. Vidare visas hur utförare kompenserar för och hanterar de ramar som ges, för att på så vis möta klienternas behov. Resultaten aktualiserar frågor om det sociala arbetets möjligheter när det gäller tjänsternas avgränsning, specialisering och tidsramar.

- I boken diskuteras hur ett kritiskt socialt arbete kan utvecklas och integreras i praktiken. Med avstamp i ett teoretiskt metaperspektiv formuleras förslag på sätt att bidra till en utveckling av detta. En utgångspunkt är att socialarbetaren är en del i ett maktspel. Denna produktion av makt kan ta sig uttryck i kategoriseringar av människor, i det språk som används eller i de metoder och teorier som ligger till grund för bedömningar och beslut. Boken gör en rad empiriska och teoretiska nedslag i teman som exempelvis makt, motstånd, familj, intersektionalitet, hemlöshet, migration, globala förändringar och kategoriseringar och visar med dem hur man kan närma sig ett socialt arbete som är kritiskt och reflexivt. I denna andra upplaga av boken har samtliga kapitel reviderats och två nya kapitel tillkommit – ett om den nya hemlösheten och fattigdomsparadoxen och ett om globala förändringar och nationella konsekvenser. - This article examines how representatives of Swedish civil society organisations (CSOs) reflected on and acted to provide daily functional social work to people living precarious lives during the early phase (March-April 2020) of the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden. The empirical material consists of 20 qualitative interviews with representatives of CSOs. The results highlight how the CSOs, and their venues, constituted a safe place where visitors were considered grievable and that working face-to-face with the visitors was deemed necessary. However, the pandemic posed challenges for how the CSOs were used to organise their social work, while many visitors lacked other alternatives. When Covid-19 hit, it meant adapting and responding to deliver well-functioning social work and a place for people lacking other alternatives despite the pandemic. The measures taken implied possible challenges to the relationship between the CSOs and their visitors. Still, there were indications that the visitors saw the measures as a protection, as rituals of grievability. However, not all measures were welcomed by the representatives or visitors. Turning people away or prioritising among visitors were challenging and cannot always be said to frame people as grievable. Regardless, it seems that the challenging measures taken during the pandemic were already embedded in everyday practices where the visitors were treated relationally and considered grievable before the pandemic. This embeddedness made it possible to extend grievability throughout the pandemic, even when social distancing measures were used, thus emphasising the importance of places of grievability being accessible to people before societal crises occur.

- The article examines how unaccompanied young refugees in Sweden relate to and talk about their everyday lives and life plans during a time of transition from childhood to adulthood. We regard them as navigators and emotional beings embodying social situations, relationships and sentiments in their habitus throughout their lives affecting their life plans and acting to build capital in social fields. Theirnarratives show that they all have a life plan. However, disruptions and adjustmentsof life plans occur, often related to their birth families, deeply embodied in theirhabitus, to their everyday life, but also to socio-economic and political contextsboth globally and locally. Their position as young ‘unaccompanied minors’ is fragile when it comes to realizing future goals. A stable social and economic structure, stability capital, appears to contribute to possibilities of adapting to or maintaining sustainable life plans.

- The purpose of this article is to study how gender difference and ultimately female gender positioning are created and manifested in the heavy metal culture. The empirical material consists of single interviews and focus group interviews with heavy metal fans between the ages of 18 and 26. The overall finding is that, while gender is a movable position in general, women move their gender position to a greater extent than men as they are constantly forced to adhere to the male values of the heavy metal culture. Three dualities in the positioning of heavy metal women illustrate to this phenomenon: a whore-goddess paradigm based on the knowledge of the female heavy metal fan; the balancing act of “acting male” and “looking female”; and the gender “twilight zone” of being insufficiently male for heavy metal culture while being insufficiently female for the mainstream world.

- In the last couple of years, there have probably not been any social issues more heavily debated in Sweden's political and public sphere than gang violence among young people, particularly in stigmatized areas. In this study, we have followed one civil organisation explicitly performing social work with youth involved in criminal activities who wanted help to defect. The organisation, located in a disadvantaged neighbourhood in one of Sweden's largest cities, constitutes an example of civil society efforts concerning gang violence. Between 2013 and 2023, we followed this work within the framework of two research projects. Both projects are based on an ethnographic approach, including participatory observations, document analysis, and individual and focus-group interviews with representatives of the organisation and the municipality. Findings demonstrate a complicated relationship between the municipality and the organisation, where the latter are distrusted. These experiences of distrust are emotionally charged and have become part of the organisation's history. A related finding is the question of funding. Funding decisions seem somewhat arbitrary, and representatives of the organisation describe being discriminated against and ongoing processes of othering. Finally, despite these dilemmas, findings also indicate that the organisation provides continuity and is vital to the community. Not the least to those young people who wanted help to defect, and their descriptions of the organisation's work and importance in their life trajectories. This study demonstrates the importance of civil society organisations performing community work and the difficulties surrounding such work when targeting gang violence as a highly politicised area.

Handslaget : att organisera tystnad : en fallstudie om pragmatisk särbehandling i arbetslivet

- Det finns ett påtagligt behov att synliggöra problemet med särbehandling i arbetslivet som ett socialpolitiskt problem. Social utsatthet i arbetslivet har ökat och särbehandling är ett rättsligt reglerat fenomen. Rättsskyddet och arbetsskadeförsäkringsskyddet för dem som hamnar utanför arbetsmarknaden på grund av särbehandlingär dock svagt, vilket gör att problemet behöver synliggöras som en socialpolitisk fråga, vilket inte görs idag. Förståelsen för särbehandling som fenomen i arbetslivet rymmer en stor kunskapslucka inom forskningsfältet, avseende praktiken och logiken bakom social exkludering och utmanövrering. Det finns idag en växande kritik mot individualiseringen av särbehandling som problem, såväl i praktik som forskning. Kritiken framhåller att det saknas strukturell kontextualisering till fenomenet särbehandling och att fokus inom den traditionella forskningen, alltför ensidigt, sökt förklaringar på individnivå. Behovet av teoretisk utveckling på organisationsnivå efterfrågas som kan öka förståelsen för problemet med social utsatthet i arbetslivet. Syftet med denna avhandling är att utforska hur särbehandling i form av ostracism, det vill säga ignorering, avvisande, exkludering och utmanövrering, praktiseras och uppstår i den organisatoriska arbetsmiljön med fokus på organisering av arbete, organisationskultur, organisatoriskt klimat samt beslutsprocessen kring utmanövrering. Metoden är organisationsetnografi vilket tillämpas på ett fall inom ett större sjukhus i Sverige, där det pågår utmanövrering på olika nivåer i organisationen. Utgångspunkten för fallet är att ge röst åt en profession inom sjukvården som sällan är i fokus: steriltekniker. Analysen har en abduktiv ansats och sker inom ramen för ett organisationspolitiskt perspektiv. Resultatet presenteras i fyra empiriska kapitel som visar A/Rumslig organisering, professionell diskurs och teknologisk övervakning fungerar som politiska verktyg för ostracism av medarbetare. B/ Organisationskulturen cirklar kring perfektionsideal och varumärkets överordnade plats i kommunikationen, vilket legitimerar särbehandling. C/ En reduktionistisk syn på särbehandling i styrdokument möjliggör döljande av strukturell särbehandling av medarbetare. D/ Beslutet att utmanövrera medarbetare baseras på en form av fabricering som har stöd i organisationens politik och kan ses som en forcerad politisk överenskommelse för att reducera osäkerhet. Tillsammans visas att den organisatoriska arbetsmiljön leder till att strukturell särbehandling reproducerar riktad särbehandling. Resultatet teoretiseras vilket mynnar ut i en definition av pragmatisk särbehandling. Pragmatisk särbehandling kan beskrivas i fyra dimensioner som jag kallar sociala föreställningar, hierarkisk gisslanpolitik, politisk uppmärksamhet och forcerade handslag. Tillsammans förklarar begreppen hur utmanövrering orkestreras som en följd av att medarbetare bedöms utgöra någon form av risk, baserad på sociala föreställningar, för organisationens strategiska intresse och/eller för de aktörer som drar nytta av dessa intressen. Avhandlingen kan ses som en dissonans till den traditionella synen på särbehandling som bygger på antagandet om en eskalerad konflikt mellan ”offer” och ”förövare”. Istället argumenteras för att individualiseringen i arbetslivet driver fram exkluderingspraktik och en reduktionistisk syn på särbehandling, vilket behöver problematiseras inom socialpolitiken.

From Young Migrants to "Good Swedes" : Belonging and the Manifestations of Borders and Boundaries in NGO Social Work

- Belonging is a contested concept, and for young people arriving unaccompanied by parents to seek asylum in Sweden, belonging is conditional. The aim of this thesis is thus to analyse belonging in the context of an NGO mentoring programme for young people defined as unaccompanied in Sweden. By intersecting different dimensions of belonging, this is studied both from the young people’s own perspective and within the work of the mentoring programme. The thesis builds on interviews, participant observations, and policy documents gathered from the NGO mentoring programme, which more specifically works with ‘unaccompanied’ young people placed in kinship care in a Swedish suburban neighbourhood to support their establishment in Sweden. Participating in the study are young people involved in the programme and the employed mentors. The results show that the young people create a sense of belonging through transnational and local migrant networks, while the NGO perceives the young people’s situations in kinship care and in the Swedish suburban neighbourhood as limited. The mentoring programme’s work to promote establishment is intended to help the young people to overcome possible boundaries, and to reach a belonging to Swedish society. As such, the work can be interpreted as a form of boundary work. However, this work risks producing new boundaries – those between a desired, but imagined, ‘Swedish community of value’, and the migrant ‘other’. Hierarchies of belonging are thus created, within which the young people must strive to become ‘good Swedes’ to be seen as established in society. The thesis also shows how these boundaries can be challenged within social work by acting against racial structures and imagined collective communities. It thus argues for the importance of acknowledging and actively working with young people’s transnational and local networks to avoid the reproduction of boundaries.
