  • Optical, compositional and structural properties of pulsed laser deposited nitrogen-doped Titanium-dioxide
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 433, s. 149-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • N-doped TiO2 thin films were prepared using pulsed laser deposition by ablating metallic Ti target with pulses of 248 nm wavelength, at 330 °C substrate temperature in reactive atmospheres of N2/O2 gas mixtures. These films were characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Optical properties are presented as a function of the N2 content in the processing gas mixture and correlated to nitrogen incorporation into the deposited layers. The optical band gap values decreased with increasing N concentration in the films, while a monotonically increasing tendency and a maximum can be observed in case of extinction coefficient and refractive index, respectively. It is also shown that the amount of substitutional N can be increased up to 7.7 at.%, but the higher dopant concentration inhibits the crystallization of the samples.

  • Nanomaterials for benign indoor environments : Electrochromics for “smart windows”, sensors for air quality, and photo-catalysts for air cleaning
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-0248 .- 1879-3398. ; 91:4, s. 355-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanomaterials can be used in a number of technologies in order to accomplish benign indoor environments. This paper takes a unified view on this problem from a solar-energy-based perspective and specifically considers electrochromics for achieving good day-lighting jointly with energy efficiency, sensors aimed at air quality assessment, and photocatalysis for air cleaning. Recent results, mainly from the authors’ laboratories, are reported for all of these areas.

  • Formation and emission spectroscopy of laser-generated nanoparticles
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Smart materials and structures. - : IOP Publishing. - 0964-1726 .- 1361-665X. ; 11, s. 631-639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fe nanoparticles, with both fcc and bcc structures and with a C shell that protects against oxidation, were generated by the laser-assisted photolytic chemical vapor decomposition of ferrocene (FeCp2). Amorphous W and WN0,3 nanoparticles were formed by laser ablation (LA) of solid W in Ar and in N2 ambient, respectively. Laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition of W yielded crystalline W nanoparticles (β phase) from a WF6/H2/Ar gas mixture. ArF excimer laser was used as the radiation source in all the experiments. Measurements and analysis of the emitted blackbody-like radiation from the laser heated particles were performed and dominant cooling processes such as evaporation and heat transfer by the ambient gases were identified. The particles could be heated up to the boiling and melting point of Fe and W, respectively. Lognormal particle size distributions were found for Fe/C and W nanoparticles generated by vapor decomposition or deposition processes respectively, and then modeled at low particle concentration (with no coagulation). The thickness of the C shell was practically independent of the laser fluence, while the size of the Fe core could be varied for the Fe/C particles. The LA yielded no lognormal-type distribution for the amorphous WN0,3 particles.

  • Laser-Induced Synthesis of Nanostructured Thin Films
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 253:19, s. 8292-8299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a number of important characteristics of laser techniques for preparation of nanostructured thin films with foci on laser ablation (LA) and laser-assisted chemical vapor decomposition (LCVD). Size-related features and structures of the deposited layers are associated with process parameters. Whenever possible, the performance of the deposits is compared to that of films prepared by other methods (e.g., physical vapor synthesis such as gas deposition, sputtering, etc.). The LA and LCVD methods allow a wide variety of materials to be prepared. A number of promising applications emerge when one combines this versatility with the potential for making certain types of nanostructured layers. These possibilities are also discussed.

  • On the Selectivity of Nanostructured Semiconductor Gas Sensors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physica status solidi. B, Basic research. - : Wiley. - 0370-1972 .- 1521-3951. ; 244:11, s. 4331-4335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different methods are presented for improving chemical selectivity and sensitivity of semiconductor gassensors consisting of nanostructured thin films. Pure and doped WO3 nanoparticles, forming nanoporouslayers, are used as test material. The chemical selectivity is increased by applying different operating tem-peratures, using temperature modulation and pattern recognition methods, and by a fluctuation enhancedspectroscopy technique. The selectivity improvement of a fluctuation enhanced sensor is compared to thatof a classical resistive sensor.

  • On the Sensitivity, Selectivity, Sensory Information and Optimal Size of Resistive Chemical Sensors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology Perceptions. - 1660-6795. ; 3:1, s. 43-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information theoretical tools are applied for the study of the sensitivity andselectivity enhancements of resistive fluctuation-enhanced sensors. Generalconsiderations are given for the upper limit of selectivity enhancement. The signal-to-noise ratio and information channel capacity of fluctuation-enhanced chemical sensors iscompared to that of classical sensors providing a single output. The considerations aredone at the generic level with a few concrete examples and include the estimation ofscaling relations between the sensor size, speed of measurements, sampling rate, measurement time, signal power and noise power.

  • In situ monitoring of size distributions and characterization of nanoparticles during W ablation in N2 atmosphere
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 94:3, s. 2011-2017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amporphous WN0.3 nanoparticles were generated by pulsed excimer ablation of tungsten in a N2 ambient at atmospheric pressure. Size distributions and concentrations were monitored by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and condensation particle counter (CPC) with different laser parameters and sport sizes. It was found that the fast desorptive part for which a thermal process for material removal was ruled out and the 'real' ablation gave rise to different types of size distributions.
