  • Acceptable Language Online : Negotiating the Impact of Digital Affordances
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Analyzing Digital Discourses. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030846022 - 9783030846015 ; , s. 163-187
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, Heuman focuses on ‘affordance-based’ deviations, i.e. non-standard spellings connected to the constraints and possibilities of digital communication, such as typos. Unlike rule-based deviations (e.g. confusion of their/they’re), affordance-based deviations do generally not carry presupposed indexicalities, which can result in conflicting understandings. Applying the concepts of metasociolinguistic stance-taking and language ideology, the study analyses how affordance-based deviations are negotiated in mundane interaction on two social media, Twitter and Jodel. Heuman finds that the interlocutors draw on diverging language ideological frames in the metalinguistic discussions, which results in face-threating situations and conflicts about the assignment of agency. These results underline the unsettled position and the ongoing indexicalisation process of affordance-based deviations.

  • Negotiating standard language ideology : Metalinguistic discussions in mundane, online interaction
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates how ordinary language users enact language policy and thus negotiate (standard) language ideology in mundane, online interaction. The language policy work is found in metalinguistic discussions on various social media. The discussions have been triggered by deviations from standard written language, mostly on the level of orthography. The discussions mainly target different aspects of standard language ideology. The three studies included in this compilation thesis identify discursive strategies and reveal the contradictory ideologies underpinning the discussions. The discussions are analysed with an interactional and procedural focus, highlighting the unfolding negotiations of standard language ideology. The results show that standard language ideology is prevailing which, in turn, enables certain realisations. When drawing on standard norms, the participants can use strategies that do not include explicit arguments. However, the discussions also include contradictions and strategies that challenge traditional standard beliefs. These results illustrate the mundane, vivid metalinguistic negotiations in which standard language ideology is primarily enforced, but also challenged. The results illuminate how standardisation is not a mythical and imperceptible process, but one of constant and visible iteration, also in very mundane situations. Furthermore, the pervasiveness of standard language ideology could make it harder for those who deviate from it to be listened to or even to participate at all. In this way, everyday metalinguistic discussions are one among many language policy activities that can enforce loyalty to the standard variety and its position as unmarked.

  • Negotiations of language ideology on the Jodel app : Language policy in everyday online interaction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Discourse, Context & Media. - : Elsevier. - 2211-6958 .- 2211-6966. ; 33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores language policy in micro interaction on the online discussion app Jodel. By analyzingmetalinguistic, evaluative comments, this study aims to provide an example of community-based languageregulation. In total, 110 discussion threads in which Jodel users make explicit evaluative remarkson others’ language use are analyzed. Through an analysis of (de)legitimation strategies, the metalinguisticremarks are explored as key discourse elements in the reproduction of language ideologies. The resultsshow that Jodel users promote and uphold a hypercorrect local ideology that, to a large extent, promotesuniformity and traditional standard orthography. Prominent strategies for invoking this local languageideology are humor, repetition, and exposed correction. The metalinguistic comments are used for thepurpose of creating boundaries for inclusion and exclusion of community members on the app.

  • Trivializing language correctness in an online metalinguistic debate
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Language & Communication. - : Elsevier. - 0271-5309 .- 1873-3395. ; 82, s. 52-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on trivialization as a key strategy for challenging subjects who defend standard language, and for challenging standard language ideology in itself. While previous research has emphasized trivialization as a strategy for perpetuating the status quo, this study exemplifies the opposite function. Drawing on stance theory, the analysis focuses on the formation of the participating subjects and the stance object (linguistic correctness), and the link between them. The data consist of 157 posts from two blog comments sections, 32 of which trivialize linguistic correctness. The analysis shows that interlocutors mainly trivialize linguistic correctness through negative other-positioning, thus avoiding explicit metalinguistic arguments. Furthermore, the study illustrates and underlines how language ideological meaning is created in contention by emphasizing differences.
