  • Genetic loci associated with heart rate variability and their effects on cardiac disease risk
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reduced cardiac vagal control reflected in low heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with greater risks for cardiac morbidity and mortality. In two-stage meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies for three HRV traits in up to 53,174 individuals of European ancestry, we detect 17 genome-wide significant SNPs in eight loci. HRV SNPs tag non-synonymous SNPs (in NDUFA11 and KIAA1755), expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) (influencing GNG11, RGS6 and NEO1), or are located in genes preferentially expressed in the sinoatrial node (GNG11, RGS6 and HCN4). Genetic risk scores account for 0.9 to 2.6% of the HRV variance. Significant genetic correlation is found for HRV with heart rate (-0.74 < r(g) < -0.55) and blood pressure (-0.35 < r(g) < -0.20). These findings provide clinically relevant biological insight into heritable variation in vagal heart rhythm regulation, with a key role for genetic variants (GNG11, RGS6) that influence G-protein heterotrimer action in GIRK-channel induced pacemaker membrane hyperpolarization.

  • Shape Coexistence in the Neutron-Deficient Even-Even Hg182-188 Isotopes Studied via Coulomb Excitation.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 112:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85 MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0+ states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules approach. Results show that the ground state is slightly deformed and of oblate nature, while a larger deformation for the excited 0+ state was noted in Hg182,184. The results are compared to beyond mean field and interacting-boson based models and interpreted within a two-state mixing model. Partial agreement with the model calculations was obtained. The presence of two different structures in the light even-mass mercury isotopes that coexist at low excitation energy is firmly established.

  • Electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes : Coulomb excitation of 182Hg, 184Hg, 186Hg and 188Hg
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 55:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass 182-188 Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The population of 01,2+, 21,2+ and 41+ states was observed in all nuclei under study. Reduced E2 matrix elements coupling populated yrast and non-yrast states were extracted, including their relative signs. These are a sensitive probe of shape coexistence and may be used to validate nuclear models. The experimental results are discussed in terms of mixing of two different configurations and are compared with three different model calculations: the Beyond Mean Field model, the Interacting Boson Model with configuration mixing and the General Bohr Hamiltonian. Partial agreement with experiment was observed, hinting to missing ingredients in the theoretical descriptions.

  • Deformation and mixing of coexisting shapes in neutron-deficient polonium isotopes
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 92:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coulomb-excitation experiments are performed with postaccelerated beams of neutron-deficient Po-196,Po-198,Po-200,Po-202 isotopes at the REX-ISOLDE facility. A set of matrix elements, coupling the low-lying states in these isotopes, is extracted. In the two heaviest isotopes, Po-196,Po-198, the transitional and diagonal matrix elements of the 2(1)(+) state are determined. In Po-196,Po-198 multistep Coulomb excitation is observed, populating the 4(1)(+), 0(2)(+), and 2(2)(+) states. The experimental results are compared to the results from the measurement of mean-square charge radii in polonium isotopes, confirming the onset of deformation from Po-196 onwards. Three model descriptions are used to compare to the data. Calculations with the beyond-mean-field model, the interacting boson model, and the general Bohr Hamiltonian model show partial agreement with the experimental data. Finally, calculations with a phenomenological two-level mixing model hint at the mixing of a spherical structure with a weakly deformed rotational structure.

  • Coulomb excitation of In-107
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 87:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The radioactive isotope In-107 was studied using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Two gamma rays were observed during the experiment, corresponding to the low-lying 11/2(+) and 3/2(-)states. The reduced transition probability of the 11/2(+) state was determined with the semiclassical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The result is discussed in comparison to large-scale shell-model calculations, previous unified-model calculations, and earlier Coulomb excitation measurements in the odd-mass In isotopes. • Excited states and reduced transition probabilities in Os-168
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9985. ; 94:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level scheme of the neutron-deficient nuclide Os-168 has been extended and mean lifetimes of excited states have been measured by the recoil distance Doppler-shift method using the JUROGAM gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the IKP Koln plunger device. The 168Os. rays were measured in delayed coincidence with recoiling fusion-evaporation residues detected at the focal plane of the RITU gas-filled separator. The ratio of reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 4(1)(+)-> 2(1)(+))/B(E2; 2(1)(+)-> 0(1)(+)) is measured to be 0.34(18), which is very unusual for collective band structures and cannot be reproduced by interacting boson model (IBM-2) calculations based on the SkM* energy-density functional.

  • Shape-changing particle decays of Bi-185 and structure of the lightest odd-mass Bi isotopes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 69:5, s. 054308-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proton and alpha decay of the proton-rich nuclide Bi-185 has been restudied in more detail in the complete fusion reaction Nb-93(Mo-95, 3n)Bi-185 at the velocity filter SHIP. The observed decay pattern of Bi-185 and of the heavier odd-mass isotopes Bi-187,Bi-189,Bi-191,Bi-193 are interpreted based on potential-energy surface calculations. It is shown that the experimental systematics of the particle decays and of the excited states in these nuclei (where known) can be explained by the prolate-oblate shape co-existence at low excitation energy. The observed state in Bi-185 is proposed to be of prolate nature, which is in contrast with the previously proposed oblate interpretation.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Patient safety in surgery. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1754-9493. ; 2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients with ankylosing spondylitis are at significant risk for sustaining cervical spine injuries following trauma predisposed by kyphosis, stiffness and osteoporotic bone quality of the spine. The risk of sustaining neurological deficits in this patient population is higher than average. The present review article provides an outline on the specific injury patterns in the cervical spine, diagnostic algorithms and specific treatment modalities dictated by the underlying disease in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. An emphasis is placed on the risks and complication patterns in the treatment of these rare, but challenging injuries.

  • Shape Coexistence Near Neutron Number N=20 : First Identification of the E0 Decay from the Deformed First Excited J(pi)=0(+) State in Mg-30
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 103:1, s. 012501-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 1789 keV state in Mg-30 was identified as the first excited 0(+) state via its electric monopole (E0) transition to the ground state. The measured small value of rho(2)(E0,0(2)(+)-> 0(1)(+))=(26.2 +/- 7.5)x10(-3) implies within a two-level model a small mixing of competing configurations with largely different intrinsic quadrupole deformation near the neutron shell closure at N=20. Axially symmetric configuration mixing calculations identify the ground state of Mg-30 to be based on neutron configurations below the N=20 shell closure, while the excited 0(+) state mainly consists of two neutrons excited into the nu 1f(7/2) orbital. The experimental result represents the first case where an E0 back decay from a strongly deformed second to the normal deformed first nuclear potential minimum well has been unambiguously identified, thus directly proving shape coexistence at the borderline of the much-debated "island of inversion."

  • Coulomb Excitation of 68,70Cu: First Use of Postaccelerated Isomeric Beams
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. ; 98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the first low-energy Coulomb excitation measurements with radioactive Ipi=6- beams of odd-odd nuclei 68,70Cu. The beams were produced at ISOLDE, CERN and were post-accelerated by REX-ISOLDE to 2.83 MeV/nucleon. gamma rays were detected with the MINIBALL spectrometer. The 6- beam was used to study the multiplet of states (3-, 4-, 5-, 6-) arising from the pi2p3/2nu1g9/2 configuration. The 4- state of the multiplet was populated via Coulomb excitation and the B(E2;6--->4-) value was determined in both nuclei. The results obtained illustrate the fragile stability of the Z=28 shell and N=40 subshell closures. A comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations using the 56Ni core shows the importance of the proton excitations across the Z=28 shell gap to the understanding of the nuclear structure in the neutron-rich nuclei with N[approximate]40.

    • Two excited J(pi)=0(+) states in Pb-186 populated in the a-decay of Po-190 have been identified through alpha -particle/conversion electron coincidences in an experiment at the velocity filter SHIP. The parent Po-190 nuclei have been produced in the Nd-142(Cr-52,4n)Po-190 complete fusion reaction, alpha -particle energies and branching ratios have been measured and hindrance factors were deduced. The observed states have been interpreted as the band heads of the known prolate and (yet unobserved) oblate rotational bands in Pb-186.

  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0278-0062 .- 1558-254X. ; 35:4, s. 967-977
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Real-time 3D Echocardiography (RT3DE) has been proven to be an accurate tool for left ventricular (LV) volume assessment. However, identification of the LV endocardium remains a challenging task, mainly because of the low tissue/blood contrast of the images combined with typical artifacts. Several semi and fully automatic algorithms have been proposed for segmenting the endocardium in RT3DE data in order to extract relevant clinical indices, but a systematic and fair comparison between such methods has so far been impossible due to the lack of a publicly available common database. Here, we introduce a standardized evaluation framework to reliably evaluate and compare the performance of the algorithms developed to segment the LV border in RT3DE. A database consisting of 45 multivendor cardiac ultrasound recordings acquired at different centers with corresponding reference measurements from 3 experts are made available. The algorithms from nine research groups were quantitatively evaluated and compared using the proposed online platform. The results showed that the best methods produce promising results with respect to the experts' measurements for the extraction of clinical indices, and that they offer good segmentation precision in terms of mean distance error in the context of the experts' variability range. The platform remains open for new submissions.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 690:1, s. 15-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nuclides W-157 and Os-161 have been discovered ill reactions of Ni-58 ion beams with a Cd-106 target. The Os-161 alpha-decay energy and half-life were 6890 +/- 12 keV and 640 +/- 60 mu s. The daughter W-157 nuclei beta-decayed with a half-life of 275 +/- 40 ms, populating both low-lying alpha-decaying states in Ta-157, which is consistent with a 7/2(-) ground state in W-157. Fine structure observed in the alpha decay of Os-161 places the lowest excited state in W-157 with 1(pi) = 9/2(-) at 318 +/- 30 key. The branching ratio of 5.5(-2.2)(+3.1)% indicates that Os-161 also has a 7/2(-) ground state. Shell-model calculations analysing the effects of monopole shifts and a tensor force on the relative energies of 2f(7/2) and 1h(9/2) neutron states in N = 83 isotones are presented. • Coulomb excitation of the N=50 nucleus Zn-80
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1012, s. 291-295 453
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron rich Zinc isotopes, including the N=50 nucleus Zn-80, were produced and post-accelerated at the Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN). Low-energy Coulomb excitation was induced on these isotopes after post-acceleration, yielding B(E2) strengths to the first excited 2(+) states. For the first time, an excited state in Zn-80 was observed and the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-78 was established. The measured B(E2,2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) values are compared to two sets of large scale shell model calculations. Both calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics for the full Zinc isotopic chain. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus Ni-78.

    • Most osteoporotic sintering fractures are treated conservatively. However, persistent pain and consecutive spinal deformity may require certain cement-augmenting interventions. These procedures have proven their intermediate-term efficacy in pain reduction, prevention of progressive sintering and improvement of the overall quality of life in the majority of patients. In fractures with relevant spinal stenosis, persisting instability, gross deformity and trauma-associated osteoporotic fractures with or without neurological deficits, the therapeutic options may call for more extensive surgical procedures. In this regard, poor bone quality, age and respective comorbidities of the individual patient must be considered during preoperative planning and management. This article provides an overview of the diverse problem-solving strategies discussed in today's literature. It is generally acknowledged that any decision to perform surgery on an osteoporotic fracture is strongly case-dependent. Treating physicians must therefore master the complete therapeutic spectrum in order to meet this complex orthopedic challenge appropriately.

    • Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are capable of promoting bone healing and even induce de novo osteogenesis. Their clinical application in spinal fusion surgery has recently increased in popularity. This is especially true for the use of BMPs in combination with artificial bone substitutes that have the capability to replace autologous bone graft, which can be associated with severe harvesting complications. This review will examine the use of BMP-2 and BMP-7 as commercially available products that have proven their osteoinductive capacity in spinal fusion. We will perform an overview of the literature for scientific evidence supporting the use of these new technologies. Despite their high osteoinductive potency, the use of BMPs does not replace proper surgical stabilization in spinal fusion. Safety issues with BMPs are osteoclast activation, postoperative swelling and hyperostosis. Despite these issues, manufacturers continue to expend more effort concerning proper application, dosage and carriers for these devices for spinal fusion, both presently and in the future.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Post-traumatic disc degeneration with consecutive loss of reduction and kyphosis remains a debatable issue within both the operative and nonoperative treatment regimen of thoracolumbar spine fractures. Intervertebral disc (IVD) cell apoptosis has been suggested to play a vital role in promoting the degeneration process. To evaluate and compare apoptosis-regulating signaling mechanisms, IVDs were obtained from patients with thoracolumbar spine fractures (n = 21), patients suffering from symptomatic IVD degeneration (n = 6), and from patients undergoing surgical resection of a primary vertebral tumor (n = 3 used as control samples). All tissues were prospectively analyzed in regards to caspase-3/7, -8, and -9 activity, apoptosis-receptor expression levels, and gene expression of the mitochondria-bound apoptosis-regulating proteins Bax and Bcl-2. Morphologic changes characteristic for apoptotic cell death were confirmed by H&E staining. Statistical significance was designated at p < 0.05 using the Student's t-test. Both traumatic and degenerative IVD demonstrated a significant increase of caspase-3/7 activity with evident apoptosis. Although caspase-3/7 activation was significantly greater in degenerated discs, both showed equally significant activation of the initiator caspases 8 and 9. Traumatic IVD alone demonstrated a significant increase of the Fas receptor (FasR), whereas the TNF receptor I (TNFR I) was equally up-regulated in both morbid IVD groups. Only traumatic IVD showed distinct changes in up-regulated TNF expression, in addition to significantly down-regulated antiapoptotic Bcl-2 protein. Our results suggest that post-traumatic disc changes may be promoted and amplified by both the intrinsic mitochondria-mediated and extrinsic receptor-mediated apoptosis signaling pathways, which could be, in part, one possible explanation for developing subsequent disc degeneration.

    • At the radioactive ion beam facility REX-ISOLDE, neutron-rich zinc isotopes were investigated using low-energy Coulomb excitation. These experiments have resulted in B(E2, 2(1)(+)-> 0(1)(+)) values in Zn74-80, B(E2, 4(1)(+)-> 2(1)(+)) values in Zn-74,Zn-76 and the determination of the energy of the first excited 2(1)(+) states in Zn-78,Zn-80. The zinc isotopes were produced by high-energy proton- (A = 74, 76, 80) and neutron-(A = 78) induced fission of U-238, combined with selective laser ionization and mass separation. The isobaric beam was postaccelerated by the REX linear accelerator and Coulomb excitation was induced on a thin secondary target, which was surrounded by the MINIBALL germanium detector array. In this work, it is shown how the selective laser ionization can be used to deal with the considerable isobaric beam contamination and how a reliable normalization of the experiment can be achieved. The results for zinc isotopes and the N = 50 isotones are compared to collective model predictions and state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model calculations, including a recent empirical residual interaction constructed to describe the present experimental data up to 2004 in this region of the nuclear chart.
