  • Electrically Controlled Birefringence Colors in Deformed Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals

    • A short helix pitch (p050.45 mm) ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture was found to provide four electrically switched birefringence colours: blue, green, yellow and red. The contrast ratios of the birefringence colours were measured as functions of both driving voltage amplitude and frequency. The FLC mixture, which had a relatively high birefringence, Dn>0.2, was controlled by a voltage less than 5V. A simple model is proposed, which was confirmed by experiments. A possible application is discussed in field-sequential colour displays, where fast switching times are required.

    • Short helix pitch (p0 = 0.45 μm) ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture possessing high birefringenc under the action of applied voltage not more than 5 V provides four electrically switched birefringent colors: blue, green, yellow and red, while before only two [1] or three [2] colors were switched. Contrast ratio of birefringence colors were measured dependently on the driving voltage frequency. A possible application in field sequential color display where fast switching time is required has been proposed.

    • Ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixtures with high spontaneous polarization (Ps > 50 nC/cm2) possessing ferroelectric domains [1] exhibit a multistability effect which has been known for more than 10 years [2, 3]. Any light transmission level can be memorized in the effect after the driving voltage is switched off. The multistability effect is responsible for three new electrooptical modes with continuous, memorized and reversible gray scale. Depending on the asymmetry in boundary conditions and crystallooptical parameters of the cell, these modes differ among themselves under the shape of the gray scale curve that can be either S (double or single) or V-shaped. Origin of the phenomenon is under consideration here.

    • Photoalignment properties of commercially available Brilliant Yellow (BY) diazo dye are investigated. By using ozone pre-cleaning procedure we succeeded in deposition of highly uniform BY films on different kinds of inorganic and organic substrates used in LCD manufacturing. Excellent photoalignment of nematic, smectic ferroelectric and reactive liquid crystals (LC) on BY films is observed. This alignment shows extraordinary high photo-and thermal stability. The distinguished alignment properties of this dye extend the field of the sulfuric azo dyes effective for photoalignment.

  • Plasma Beam Alignment Technique for Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals

    • The plasma-beam alignment procedure earlier developed for the alignment of nematic liquid crystals is successfully extended to ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLC). The highly uniform alignment of the “chevron” structure (before electrical treatment of FLC cells) and “quasi bookshelf” structure (after the electrical treatment) are realized. The contrast of bistable switching larger than 350:1 is achieved. This makes the non-contact plasma-beam alignment procedure especially attractive for high-contrast bistable LCDs on an LCOS base, particularly used in PDA and e-books. Fast switching and realization of gray scale in the plasma-beam aligned FLC cellsmakes this technique also promising for full-color displays including color LCD TV.

    • The electro-optical properties of a full v flexible photo-aligned FLC cell are investigated. Two different methods, sticky spacers together with a photo-sensitive monomer and polymer spacers in a regular pattern formed by photo-lithography, are proposed to stabilize the structure in order to increase the bending tolerance of the FLC material during deformation of the cell.

    • The alignment properties of the azo dye photo-alignment material SD-1/SDA-2 on plastic substrates are investigated. Excellent alignment with high anchoring energy can be achieved with a polarized UV dose less than 1.0 J/cm2. A reflective 6-digit flexible passive matrix driven TN-LCD for smart card applications showing excellent electro-optical properties is demonstrated.

    • The study of a tunable liquid crystal lens having a uniform cell gap, uniform applied voltage and non-uniform anchoring energy was done. Optimal parameters of such a lens were found and discussed. We demonstrated that producing a desired director gradient profile with non-uniform spatial distribution of the anchoring energy is a good alternative for other known methods applied for liquid crystal lenses.

    • Disclosed herein is a liquid crystal lens with a variable focal length. The gradient profile of the liquid crystals molecules that causes the gradient profile of the refractive index is achieved by inducing non-uniformly distributed anchoring energy and an external electric or magnetic field applied to the liquid crystal layer. Unlike existing electrically controlled liquid crystal lens, the external electric or magnetic field has a uniform spatial distribution within the liquid crystal layer. The focal length of the liquid crystal lens is controlled via the non-uniformly distributed anchoring energy and by varying the uniformly distributed electric or magnetic field.
