  • Swedish Lung Cancer Radiation Study Group: Predictive value of age at diagnosis for radiotherapy response in patients with non-small cell lung cancer
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - London : Informa Healthcare. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 51:6, s. 759-767
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of age at diagnosis on prognosis in patients treated with curatively intended radiotherapy for NSCLC. Material and methods. This is a joint effort among all the Swedish Oncology Departments that includes all identified patients with a diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer that have been subjected to curatively intended irradiation (andgt;= 50 Gy) treated during 1990 to 2000. Included patients had a histopathological/cytological diagnosis date as well as a death date or a last follow-up date. The following variables were studied in relation to overall and disease-specific survival: age, gender, histopathology, time period, smoking status, stage and treatment. Results. The median overall survival of all 1146 included patients was 14.7 months, while the five-year overall survival rate was 9.5%. Younger patients (andlt;55 years), presented with a more advanced clinical stage but had yet a significantly better overall survival compared with patients in the age groups 55-64 years (p = 0.035) and 65-74 years (p = 0.0097) in a multivariate Cox regression analysis. The overall survival of patients aged andgt;= 75 years was comparable to those aged andlt;55 years. Conclusion. In this large retrospective study we describe that patients younger than 55 years treated with curatively intended radiotherapy for NSCLC have a better overall survival than patients aged 55-64 and 65-74 years and that younger patients seem to benefit more from the addition of surgery and/or chemotherapy to radiotherapy. Due to the exploratory nature of the study, these results should be confirmed in future prospective trials.

  • Swedish Lung Cancer Radiation Study Group: Predictive value of histology for radiotherapy response in patients with non-small cell lung cancer
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-0852 .- 0959-8049. ; 47:16, s. 2415-2421
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential predictive value of histology in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with curatively intended radiotherapy. In a collaborative effort among all the Swedish Oncology Departments, clinical data were collected for 1146 patients with a diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer subjected to curatively intended irradiation (>= 50 Gy) during the years 1990 to 2000. The included patients were identified based on a manual search of all medical and radiation charts at the oncology departments from which the individual patient data were collected. Only patients who did not have a histological diagnosis date and death date/last follow-up date were excluded (n = 141). Among the 1146 patients with non-small cell carcinoma eligible for analysis, 919 were diagnosed with either adenocarcinoma (n = 323) or squamous cell carcinoma (n = 596) and included in this study. The median survival for the 919 patients was 14.8 months, while the 5-year survival rate was 9.5%. Patients with adenocarcinoma had a significantly better overall survival compared with patients with squamous cell carcinoma (p = 0.0062, log-rank test). When comparing different stages, this survival benefit was most pronounced for stages IIA-IIB (p<0.0001, log-rank test). The difference in survival between the two histological groups was statistically significant in a univariate Cox analysis (p = 0.0063) as well as in two multivariate Cox analyses including demographic and treatment variables (p = 0.037 and p = 0.048, respectively). In this large population based retrospective study we describe for the first time that patients with adenocarcinoma have a better survival after curatively intended radiation therapy in comparison with squamous cell carcinoma patients, particularly those with clinical stages IIA-IIB. • Swedish lung cancer radiation study group: the prognostic value of anaemia, thrombocytosis and leukocytosis at time of diagnosis in patients with non-small cell lung cancer
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Medical Oncology. - : Humana Press (Springer Imprint). - 1357-0560 .- 1559-131X. ; 29:5, s. 3176-3182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a need to improve the prognostic and predictive indicators in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). At present, the main focus is on genetic predictive markers while the prognostic value of the standard blood variables related to haematopoiesis has been subjected to relatively limited attention. To study the prognostic potential of haemoglobin (Hgb), platelet (Plt) and white blood cell (WBC) levels at time of diagnosis in NSCLC patients, 835 NSCLC patients, stage I-IV, who received radiotherapy with curative intention (andgt; 50 Gy), were included in the study. WBC, Plt, Hgb, gender, age at diagnosis, stage, surgery and first-line chemotherapy were studied in relation to overall survival. For patients with Hgb andlt; 110 g/L and Hgb a parts per thousand yen 110 g/L), the median survival was 11.2 and 14.5 months, respectively (p = 0.0032). For WBC andgt; 9.0 x 10(9)/L and andlt; 9.0 x 10(9)/L, the median survival was 11.6 and 15.4 months, respectively (p andlt; 0.0001). For Plt andgt; 350 x 10(9)/L and andlt; 350 x 10(9)/L, the median survival was 11.2 and 14.9 months, respectively (p andlt; 0.0001). The median survival in patients with pathological results in all three markers was half of that in patients with normal levels of all three markers (8.0 and 16.0 months, respectively (p andlt; 0.0001). The level of the three studied haematological biomarkers corresponds significantly to outcome in NSCLC. These results indicate that standard haematological variables may be used as guidance for the clinician in the decision-making regarding treatment intensity and patient information.

  • The impact of hyperfractionated radiotherapy regimen in patients with non-small cell lung cancer
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Medical Oncology. - : Humana Press. - 1357-0560 .- 1559-131X. ; 30:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prognosis for patients with lung cancer is poor with an average of 5-year overall survival rate of only 10-15 % taking all clinical stages together. The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of the radiotherapy regimen on survival. Clinical data were collected from all the Swedish Oncology Departments for 1,287 patients with a diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) subjected to curatively intended irradiation (andgt;= 50 Gy) during the years 1990 to 2000. The included patients were identified based on a manual search of all medical and radiation charts at the oncology departments from which the individual patient data were collected. Patients who did not have a histopathological diagnosis date and/or death date/last follow-up date as well as patients being surgically treated were excluded from the study (n = 592). Thus, 695 patients were included in the present study. Patients who received hyperfractionated radiotherapy (HR) had a higher local control rate compared with patients receiving conventional fractionation (CF) (38 vs. 49 % local relapse). The difference in survival between the two radiotherapy regimens was statistically significant in a univariate Cox analysis (p = 0.023) in favor of HR. This significance was, however, not retained in a multivariate Cox analysis (p = 0.56). Thus, the possible beneficial effects of hyperfractionation are still unclear and need to be further investigated in well-controlled prospective clinical trials, preferably including systemic treatment with novel drugs.

  • The value of induction chemotherapy for survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with radiotherapy.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Anticancer research. - : The International Institute of Anticancer Research. - 1791-7530 .- 0250-7005. ; 32:4, s. 1339-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: The aim of the present study was to retrospectively investigate the impact of induction chemotherapy on treatment outcome in patients treated with curatively intended radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with a diagnosed NSCLC that have been subjected to curatively intended irradiation (≥50 Gy) and treated in an oncology department in Sweden during the years 1990-2000 were included in the study. Operated patients and patients having received concomitant chemotherapy were excluded. The included patients were localised by a manual search of all the oncology departments' medical records and radiation charts. RESULTS: Patients treated with induction chemotherapy (n=79) had a significantly better overall survival compared with patients treated with radiotherapy alone (p=0.0097) in a univariate Cox regression analysis. A platinum/taxane combination produced the greatest survival benefit; hazard ratio=0.49 (95% confidence interval=0.31 to 0.75). CONCLUSION: We found that patients treated with induction chemotherapy in addition to radiotherapy for NSCLC have a better overall survival than patients treated with radiotherapy alone and that the best results are achieved using a platinum/taxane combination.

  • "I Wanna Be Free" : On the Challenges and Coping Strategies of Women Entrepreneurs in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Women's entrepreneurship is often presented as important for creating economic prosperity at the national level and is said to offer freedom, independence, and emancipation for women. The purpose of this study is to explore the conditions of women entrepreneurs who have different backgrounds in Sweden. To achieve this purpose, this study focuses on the challenges women entrepreneurs perceive and the coping strategies they employ to navigate these challenges. The study adopts an intersectional gender perspective, grounded in research on entrepreneurship, gender, and ethnicity. It draws on qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews with women entrepreneurs in Sweden who have different backgrounds. The findings show that the challenges experienced by the women entrepreneurs included lack of support, being belittled, being excluded, having to work harder and be strong and having to adapt. The analysis discusses that these challenges can be understood as a result of gendered perceptions of entrepreneurship and processes of Othering. Ethnicity and race also play a role in shaping these conditions. The interviewed women deal with the conditions through four strategies: the assimilation strategy; the positive strategy, the ambiguity strategy, and the change strategy. The coping strategies are discussed in relation to empowerment and emancipation. From a theoretical perspective, this study contributes to developing concepts and conceptual relationships to capture how gender, ethnicity, and race impact women's conditions as entrepreneurs.

  • Gendered recognition practices and the perpetuation of vulnerability : A study in Swedish universities
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In current critical research on work life in the higher education sector, analyses often revolve around neoliberal managerialism as contrasted to traditional professional academic values (cf. Henkel, 1997; Deem, 2004; Ekman et al, 2017). Academics are both faced with expectations to uphold the integrity of academic values in their research and teaching, whilst at the same time performing and ’careering’ in accordance with managerialist reforms (Clarke & Knights, 2015).Knights & Clarke (2014) analyse insecurity as a central aspect of identity in academics, conceptualizing academic life as a ‘bittersweet symphony’ populated by imposters (self- doubt and low self-esteem despite adequate performance), aspirants (under-recognised in relation to their inner sense of excellence) and existentialists (questioning the meaning of work and maintaining a sense of anxiety over their contributions to wider society). Another example is provided by Bristow et al (2017) who identify how early career-academics within CMS play on three narratives – diplomatic, combative and idealistic – by which they both resist and reproduce the ethos of business school neoliberalism in which they are embedded. Academics’ identity construction thus in different ways tend to position them as vulnerable selves (Cicmil et al, 2016), that is, as existentially exposed to the risks associated with projectified careers, macho-style management and a high degree of self-responsibility (Loveday, 2018).In addition, a number of earlier studies has also pointed out the highly gendered nature of how academic work is organized, how recruitment and promotion processes unfold etc. (cf. (cf. Hush, 2001; Mählck, 2003; van den Brink & Benschop, 2012).In this study we will focus on recognition practices (how recognition repeatedly tend to happen or not happen in local/cultural contexts, and thus also become the expectation on what may happen in future interactions) and their consequences for identity construction1and sense of vulnerability thus seem central to advance the above insights. Recognition practices thus involve not only what and whom is recognized or not for something, but also in what settings certain practices are legitimate or not, and how they are publicly displayed in social interaction. We suggest thatrecognition practices are an important yet under-researched aspect of academicidentity construction processesrecognition practices are gendered, i.e. we perform gender in our ways of- conferring and receiving recognition,- constructing what recognition may mean in different local/cultural contexts, - constructing when it is to be conferred/received or not,- constructing how it is appropriately played out how in social interaction.recognition practices tend to sustain vulnerability among academics, but in different ways for men and women.

  • Entreprenörskapets tysta(de) röster : En narrativ studie om kvinnor som delar sitt liv med en man som är entreprenör
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Entrepreneurship has come to play a crucial role in developing our society, as has gender equality. However, some conflicting aspects of these two political priorities have to date been overlooked. Taking its point of departure in feminist theory, an entrepreneurial culture and an empirical context supporting companies with high growth potential, this thesis aims to illuminate and analyze narrative constructions of entrepreneurship and gender in relation to the female spouse or partner (S/P) of a male entrepreneur. This means entrepreneurship is studied from a gender perspective and gender from the perspective of entrepreneurship. Reading into a broad literature within the field of entrepreneurship, the epistemology appears to be permeated by a masculine rationality, not least is this disclosed in the field of gender studies on entrepreneurship. This excludes, and silences, the voices and practices of the entrepreneur’s S/P, which is questioned in this thesis by using the metaphor of a hunter-gatherer society. The thesis builds on a narrative method, analyzing the entrepreneurship policy’s normative story of entrepreneurship in parallel to the female S/P’s narratives and experiences of her entrepreneurial journey. The normative narrative includes certain assumptions about entrepreneurship, women and business. One is that entrepreneurial practice takes part in the public sphere. Another that entrepreneurship is practiced by the entrepreneur. A third that equality is only seen to be achieved between women and men who run a business. Understanding policy as a cultural product, constructed by contemporary norms and values, that govern our lives in its broadest sense, these assumptions do not only hide certain silences. They also bear implications for the lives we can live.In order to illustrate and problematize how our lives can be lived, the S/P’s narratives are analyzed and the implications unfolded. These narratives demonstrate how the women, by means of economic and social support, enable the start-up and development of entrepreneurial business by adopting a more traditional role. The fact that women have a more traditional role than men may not be noteworthy. The remarkable thing is rather that men – with the support of the state and women – can build companies where women’s efforts and conditions are discounted, while the reforms that aim to support economic growth and gender equality leave this unproblematized. In order to make their voices heard, these women tend to imitate and reproduce an entrepreneurial and masculine rationale when making sense of their experiences. This, in turn, further silences the experiences of S/Ps whose voices and practices are rendered even more suppressed.By mirroring the normative and parallel narratives, six different constructions of entrepreneurship and gender emerge. At first, the S/P’s invisible participation trains a skilled imitator when positioning herself as entrepreneurial. Secondly, the conditional equality of the policy reform relates to a double subordination in relation to the man and the entrepreneur, who are both superior to the female S/P. Thirdly, equality and economic growth appear to be two incompatible concepts, which can be illustrated by the assumption that a co-ownership requires an active role in the business. This holds a structural discrimination, leaving the role of the majority of women in an entrepreneurial context unacknowledged, both with regards to theory and practice.

  • Assessing the other: a study on recruiting practices of high skilled ethnic minorities
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research on recruitment of ethnic minorities is often focused on discrimination and hinders for entering organizations. In contrast to existing literature, this study investigates an inclusive organization that recruits high skilled migrants and ethnic minorities. It focusses on actual recruitment practices using participant observations of employment interviews and assessment of candidates. We identify two key recruitment practices in the construction of acceptability: association and adequacy. These practices assess candidate in view of their similarity with existing employees (association) and in view of their adequacy with the position’s conditions (who will they be working with, what are the possibility of career). We show how association and adequacy are constructed around the ethnic background of the candidates, placing ethnicity in a central position in the construction of acceptability. Our results contribute to recruitment theory, by showing that acceptability is constructed the same way with all candidates (ethnic minority and/or migrants, or not) and that it is the ethnic order in place that leads to different assessment outcome: acceptable, or not. We introduce the concept of inclusive subordination to discuss the implications of our results for recruitment and policy makers.

    • Prostitution and other forms of commercial sex are seldom discussed as a problem in business life. However, research reveals that the consumption of commercial sex, such as visiting strip clubs or purchasing sex, can be part of organizational cultures and contribute to the reproduction of gendered organizations. In this chapter, we argue that commercial sex is an organizational issue that companies need to deal with in order to combat gender inequalities on both an organizational and a societal level. We also present arguments for the introduction of guidelines against the purchasing of sex as a part of the corporate social responsibility agenda.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we explore how executive search consultants in Austria, Finland and Sweden address ethnicity. Our findings suggest that while consultants working in these different sociocultural settings may attribute different meanings to ethnicity, they share a tendency to evade questions of ethnicity with regard to the search process. We specify three discursive practices that serve to eliminate questions of ethnicity from executive search: constructing whiteness as self-evident, constructing varieties of whiteness (articulating deficiency and lack for those not belonging to Us), and distancing responsibility for the current situation to clients and society. In view of these findings, we argue that executive search can be understood as an arena for ethnosociality that stops cultural diversity at the door of management suites and serves to undermine efforts to promote cross-cultural understanding in organizations. Our study indicates that sustaining whiteness as a privileged ethnicity takes multiple forms. While executive search consultants play an important role in these processes, it is suggested that they inherit a more fundamental problem in society and they have few opportunities to change the ethnic status quo at the top.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nonprofit Management & Leadership. - : Wiley. - 1048-6682 .- 1542-7854. ; 34:1, s. 195-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we suggest a research agenda based on a review of literature exploring gender in nonprofit organizations (NPOs) published in key field-specific journals in nonprofit studies. The literature review shows that gender is often included as an unproblematized variable and that few studies focus on organizational processes that (re)produce gender inequalities and promote gender equality in NPOs. There is thus a need to expand our knowledge concerning gender in NPOs. The purpose of this paper is therefore to contribute to the development of empirical and theoretical work concerning organizational processes that (re)produce gender in NPOs. In order to inspire such endeavors, we outline a research agenda that proposes an understanding of gender informed by gender theory, an acknowledgement of NPOs as arenas where gender is (re)produced, and a development of theories on NPOs as gendered organizations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on the concept of homosociality and how it can be used in order to understand how gender is (re)produced in organisations and society. Within the field of organisation and gender, the concept of homosociality has been used to explain the gender segregation and male dominance on management levels in organisations. The concept describes processes in which men orient and identify themselves with other men. Studies show that men’s position and identity are affirmed through homosocial processes, which are often infused by desire and seduction. These processes reduce and somewhat paradoxically also generate uncertainty. Furthermore, studies show that the jargon among men is centred on distancing the group from women and men who do not conform with the ideal the group has collectively created, thus confirming the group’s superiority. Homosocial processes are therefore seen as contributing to the creation of certain groups that include some men and exclude women and other men, resulting in gender segregated organisations and the creation of dominant groups of men. In light of this research, the article discusses homosociality as a gendered process and argues for contextualized analyses that take other social power relations in organisations and society into account.

    • Responding to growing international political interest in the potential of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to contribute to climate change mitigation, multiple CCS demonstration projects of various scales are emerging globally. A fully integrated power-plant with CCS has not yet been demonstrated at scale, and acknowledgement of the scale of learning that still must occur for the technology to advance toward deployment has resulted in calls from multiple constituents for more CCS demonstration projects. Among these demonstration projects, expectations for learning and knowledge-sharing structures vary considerably and attention to different approaches to facilitate learning has been minimal. Through a comparison of the structure, framing and socio-political context of three different CCS demonstration projects, this paper explores the complexity of social learning associated with demonstration projects. Variety in expectations of the demonstration projects’ objectives, learning processes, information sharing mechanisms, public engagement initiatives, financing and collaborative partnerships are highlighted. The comparison shows that multiple factors influence the learning in CCS demonstration projects, including the process of building support for the project, the governance context and the framing of the project justification. • Men in focus : Exploring homosocial cultures in organizations and developing methods to prevent sexual harassment
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The program explores homosocial cultures in male-dominated organizations in order to contribute to our understanding of the dynamics of sexual harrassment and to develop measures and methods for transforming homosocial cultures into spaces where men in different positions can act as change agents in order to promote gender equality and workplaces free from violence and discrimination. This answers to recent calls for deepened understanding of processes by which sexual harassment is normalized and tolerated in organizational contexts and for improved prevention measures and methods (e.g. Chawla et al. 2021). By focusing on men and masculinities in relation to aspects of organizational cultures that enable men to exercise violence in order to maintain control in organizations, and by developing measures and methods for counteracting SH through organizational development, the program contributes to current research frontiers as well as to the development of new practices in organizational change management.

    • Drawing on feminist theory and critique, this chapter explores how gender and gender inequalities are accounted for in mainstream scholarly writings on nonprofit leadership, and discusses the way this affects our understanding of leaders and leadership in nonprofit organizations (NPOs). By this we hope you will have an opportunity to expand your perspective of leadership and at the same time help you obtain a few tools for how to understand this particular topic not only in texts, but also in real life.

  • Recruiting Managing Directors : Doing Homosociality
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Gender, Work and Organization. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0968-6673 .- 1468-0432. ; 20:4, s. 454-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines homosociality in the context of top management recruitment in Sweden, drawing on interviews with chairmen of the board and three recruitments of managing directors. The analysis suggests that homosociality is done through two main practices: (re)defining competence and doing hierarchy, resulting in a preference for certain men and the exclusion of women. It is argued that the preference of men can be understood as an unreflexive practice, which can explain why many Swedish male managers are aware of the adverse conditions women face and claim to be pro-equality but continue to recruit men for management positions. In light of this, it is also argued that homosociality and gender discrimination can be seen as two sides of the same coin.

  • Rekrytering av företagsledare : en studie i homosocialitet
  • 2003
