    • Active mobility, such as biking, faces a common challenge in Swedish municipalities due to the lack of adequate lighting during the dark winter months. Insufficient lighting infrastructure hinders individuals from choosing bicycles, despite the presence of well-maintained bike paths and a willingness to cycle. To address this issue, a project has been undertaken in the Swedish municipality of Skara for an alternative lighting solution using drones. A series of tests have been conducted based on drone prototypes developed for the selected bike paths. Participants were invited to cycle in darkness illuminated by drone lighting and share their mobility preferences and perception. This paper summarizes the users’ perception of drone lighting as an alternative to fixed lighting on bike paths, with a special focus on the impact on travel habits and the perceived sense of security and comfort. Most participants were regular cyclists who cited bad weather, time, and darkness as significant factors that deterred them from using bicycles more frequently, reducing their sense of security. With drone lighting, the participants appreciated the illumination’s moonlight-like quality and its ability to enhance their sense of security by illuminating the surroundings. On the technology side, they gave feedback on reducing the drone’s sound and addressing lighting stability issues. In summary, the test results showcase the potential of drone lighting as a viable alternative to traditional fixed lighting infrastructure, offering improved traffic safety, sense of security, and comfort. The results show the feasibility and effectiveness of this innovative approach, supporting transformation towards active and sustainable mobility, particularly in regions facing lighting challenges.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NU2018 - Det akademiska lärarskapet.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
ReferenserBryman, A., & Nilsson, B. • Bridging the gap : Exploring elderly citizens' perceptions of digital exclusion
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS). - : Association for Information Systems. - 9781733632508
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital exclusion of elderly citizens is a main contributor for poor uptake of public e-service. The situation is alarming since elderly citizens are a major target for many upcoming services provided by governments, such as online health care services. Playing an important role in a sustainable society, governments should always strive towards increased efficiency and effectivity in order for publicly founded resources to be better used. However, sustainable development of public e-services is problematic if the intended receivers of such services are excluded from, or do not want to use them. In order to address this problematic situation we need to know more about elderly citizens’ perceptions of why they are digitally excluded. We add to existing research by providing a large sample of empirical data explaining elderly citizens’ own perceptions about why they are digitally excluded. Furthermore, we present how these perceptions can be categorised and also how they relate in between. Such findings may serve as a basis for how to deal with these problems in order to enhance digital inclusion of elderly citizens, which in the long run may enhance their uptake of public e-service.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rapid development of digitalization has led to a more or less endless variety of ways for individuals to communicate and interact with the outside world. However, in order to take advantage of all the benefits of digitalization, individuals need to have the necessary skills. Seniors represent a group that, compared to other groups, lives in a digital exclusion to an excessive extent, mainly due to the fact that they lack the necessary knowledge to use digital technology and digital services. Based on empirical data collected from seniors partaking in digital training, we have analyzed their perceptions of why they and other seniors are digitally excluded. Our findings point out that a major barrier for seniors to be more digitally included is different variants of fear of using digital technology and digital services. The common denominator can be traced down the possibilities to be exposed to frauds, scams, viruses, and faulty handling, which in turn cause undesired consequences. Consequently, we propose a research agenda where digital training and digital inclusion measurements should be studied side by side with cybersecurity behavior. Thus, making cybersecurity a fundamental part of digital inclusion has the potential to minimize the fears identified in this research as inhibitors to technology adoption.

  • Digital inclusion of elderly citizens for a sustainable society
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS). - : Association for Information Systems. - 9781733632508
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an increasingly digitalised society, participation becomes dependent on digital skills – the ability to understand and use the everyday Internet technologies that surround us. People who have difficulty acquiring these skills risk being digitally excluded. One such group is the elderly; all research studies show that they are disadvantaged. The project focuses on digital inclusion for elderly citizens, addressing goal 10 of the United Nations global sustainability goals: reduced inequality within and among countries. It brings together researchers, industry and government in a collaborative practice (action research) program designed to increase theoretical knowledge of digital inclusion in Sweden, and to provide useful guidelines and tools for improving societal involvement of elderly citizens. The collaborative practice approach incorporates survey and interview techniques to ensure scientific rigor. A feature of the project is the use of a cross-generational teaching and learning approach – young people (digital natives) interacting with elderly - which has not previously been researched. Our initial results show that the benefits for the elderly include reduced isolation, more autonomy and independence, and better health.

  • Experiences from and attitudes towards applying user participation in public e-service development
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies. - : SciTePress. - 9789897580239 ; , s. 269-275
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is evident that user participation is a vital component for successful public e-service development.  However, it is also apparent that there is little guidance in e-government research about how user participation should be implemented in practice. Some high level guidelines can be found regarding user participation design schools but there is very little guidance in existing research regarding how these design schools can be implemented in practice. In this paper we have explored public administrations’ experience of user participation, both in general systems development and in development of public e-services, in order to identify basic requirements that have to be fulfilled when implementing user participation in public e-service development. Thereafter we have applied these requirements on commonly used techniques to implement user participation in the light of three design schools: Participatory Design, User Centered Design, and User Innovation. Our results show that techniques to implement user participation in public e-service development must be adjusted to limited resources in terms of time and money as well as short development projects.

  • Exploring citizens’ possibilities to participate in public e-service development
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Electronic government and electronic participation. - Linz : TRAUNER Verlag. - 9783854995159
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increased interest for user participation in development of public electronic services (public e-services for short) is expected to bring similar value as it has done in other systems development projects. Existing research, however, has shown that introducing user participation to public e-service development is associated with a number of challenges. We have in this paper explored the challenges a) getting users to participate, and b) lacking adequate skills, in the context of three user participation schools. Our interview results show that citizens in general are interested to participate in public e-service development, and favour user participation schools with a high degree of active participation. Moreover, citizens’ ability to participate is high with respect to ICT-knowledge. However, their knowledge of laws, regulations and business processes related to public authorities in general is low, thus limiting citizens’ ability to participate.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Electronic Journal of e-Government. - : Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. - 1479-439X. ; 16:1, s. 72-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • User participation is seen as an important enabler for successful public e-service development. However, at the same time development of public e-services is still often characterised by an internal government perspective with little consideration for external users’ perspectives. This paper challenges the overly positive attitude that is surrounding user participation in e-government research. The paper aims to illustrate and problematize various aspects that influence why, how, and in whose interest user participation is conducted in public e-service development. First, via a literature review, we identify a set of dimensions for critically exploring how, why, and in whose interest user participation is conducted in public e-service development projects. Second, we use these dimensions in order to characterise and analyse three empirical public e-service development cases in order to test the utility, usefulness, and feasibility of the identified dimensions. Our findings highlight the importance of questioning and elaborating on the motives behind user participation (the why) in public e-service development. We also identify two basic forms of how user participation is addressed in public e-service development projects: 1) veneered participation, and 2) ad-hoc participation. Furthermore, we argue that any decisions made regarding user participation in public e-service development should be based on conscious and informed choices concerning why user participation is needed and what it may bring for different stakeholders and their interests.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Electronic government. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319646763 - 9783319646770 ; , s. 60-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the last decade e-government research has underlined the importance of an external user perspective in public e-service development and there have been numerous attempts to provide guidance and directions for government agencies in this matter. Individual research studies show little progress in this matter, but a more generalisable picture of the current state of external user inclusion is missing. The aim of this paper is to provide a better and more generalisable understanding of Swedish government agencies’ current practice of external user inclusion in public e-service development. In order to do so, we have interviewed Swedish government agencies regarding their perceptions on external user inclusion. Our findings show mixed results regarding attitudes towards and current practice of external user inclusion. It is clear that organisational size and previous experience of public e-service development matter. At the same time challenges such as a general lack of resurces and a lack of time are seen as general barriers, regardless of agency level and size.

  • Hypothermic versus Normothermic Temperature Control after Cardiac Arrest
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NEJM Evidence. - 2766-5526. ; 1:11, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUNDThe evidence for temperature control for comatose survivors of cardiac arrest is inconclusive. Controversy exists as to whether the effects of hypothermia differ per the circumstances of the cardiac arrest or patient characteristics.METHODSAn individual patient data meta-analysis of the Targeted Temperature Management at 33°C versus 36°C after Cardiac Arrest (TTM) and Hypothermia versus Normothermia after Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (TTM2) trials was conducted. The intervention was hypothermia at 33°C and the comparator was normothermia. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality at 6 months. Secondary outcomes included poor functional outcome (modified Rankin scale score of 4 to 6) at 6 months. Predefined subgroups based on the design variables in the original trials were tested for interaction with the intervention as follows: age (older or younger than the median), sex (female or male), initial cardiac rhythm (shockable or nonshockable), time to return of spontaneous circulation (above or below the median), and circulatory shock on admission (presence or absence).RESULTSThe primary analyses included 2800 patients, with 1403 assigned to hypothermia and 1397 to normothermia. Death occurred for 691 of 1398 participants (49.4%) in the hypothermia group and 666 of 1391 participants (47.9%) in the normothermia group (relative risk with hypothermia, 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.96 to 1.11; P=0.41). A poor functional outcome occurred for 733 of 1350 participants (54.3%) in the hypothermia group and 718 of 1330 participants (54.0%) in the normothermia group (relative risk with hypothermia, 1.01; 95% CI, 0.94 to 1.08; P=0.88). Outcomes were consistent in the predefined subgroups.CONCLUSIONSHypothermia at 33°C did not decrease 6-month mortality compared with normothermia after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. • Web Services (WS), a currently popular subject among application developers, IT architects, and researchers, can be defined as a technology for publishing, identifying and calling services in a network of interacting computer nodes. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the benefits of using patterns as a means of managing knowledge concerning security in the context of Web Services. We draw upon experiences from an industrial project in which a pattern catalogue for Web Services was created. The pattern catalogue consists of 29 patterns, which are generic solutions for service-based development and service-oriented architectures. In particular, Web Services are in focus as the enabling technique.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • E-services hold the potential to innovate how the public sector operates, and to increase the transparencyof public services. Numerous research initiatives have illustrated the innovation power of eservices;with new technology and new solutions to existing problems. Research on this topic also emphasizesthat in order for public e-services to reach their full potential, they need to be designed in away that users find useful and beneficiary. Interestingly, in practice, only fragments of this claimedinnovation seem to take place. Today, most public e-services launched are merely electronic versionsof existing services with no, or very low, degree of innovation. In this paper, we analyse empirical datafrom local government e-service providers. The aim is to explore the current practices in local governmente-service development with respect to how aspects related to innovative and high quality serviceprovisioning are handled. In doing so, we analyse what basic motivators there are for local governmentsto offer e-services in the first place, and how such motivators influence innovation in localgovernment e-service development. The analysis concludes that local governments are facing a challengingsituation in terms of a general lack of resources regarding time, competence, and skills, aswell as a dispersed user segment where needs and wills often are hard to grasp. Furthermore, localgovernments are facing conflicting interests and agendas. At the end of the day, the heights of innovationare then hard to achieve. We call for further research on the applicability of previous researchfindings in other research areas in order to promote more innovative e-service provisioning.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Government Information Quarterly. - : Elsevier. - 0740-624X .- 1872-9517. ; 31:3, s. 396-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For decades, user participation has brought value to various systems development projects. Today, there are expectations that public e-service development will experience the same benefits. However, existing research has shown that introducing user participation into public e-service development can be challenging. In this study, we interviewed citizens in order to explore their willingness and ability to participate in public e-service development according to three user participation schools: User-Centred Design, Participatory Design and User Innovation. Our findings show that citizens in general are willing to participate, but their ability to do so is limited. Based on our findings, we developed nine propositions to explain citizens' willingness and ability to participate in public e-service development. The propositions contribute to practice by acting as a tentative guide for systems developers when they use user participation schools as inspiration in public e-service projects. They also act as a starting point for future research into conditions for user participation in public e-service development.

    • Today's digital society is developing rapidly and the number of smart and innovative digital services is increasing every day. However, the rapid digitalization may also lead to the exclusion of some groups. Senior citizens are one of these groups at risk. The most common way of combating digital exclusion among seniors is to offer education and hands-on training. The short term effects of such education initiatives have shown positive results but the long term lasting effects of digital training have not been explored to any greater extent. Data was collected via semi structured interviews with seniors who had previously participated in training sessions targeting Swedish seniors with a desire to become more digital. The results show that although the immediate effect of participating in training is positive, more individualized training is needed to achieve a lasting effect.

    • New technology means new ways of both developing, providing and consuming services. In the strive for government organizations to build and maintain relationships with its citizens, e-presence is highly important. E-services are one way to go, and it has been argued that user participation is an important part of developing said services. In this paper we analyze a selection of user participation approaches from a goal perspective to see how they fit in an e-government service development context., In doing so, we identify four challenges that need to be addressed when including users in the development: 1) Identifying the user target segment, 2) Identifying the individual user within each segment, 3) Getting users to participate, and 4) Lacking adequate skills

    • Today there is an increased interest in user participation in development of public e-services, since it is expected to bring similar value as it has done in other types of systems development. Existing research, however, has shown that introducing  user participation to public e-service development is associated with a number of challenges. In this paper we have explored three user participation schools, Participatory Design, User Centered Design and User Innovation, with regard to two challenges: a) businesses employees' current mandate and willingness to participate in public e-service development and b) business employees' ability to participate in public e-service development. Our interview results show that businesses employees do have mandate to participate and also want to do so. Moreover, business employees' ability to participate is high with respect to ICT knowledge but rather low with respect to knowledge regarding public authorities' business processes. In addition, their knowledge about laws and regulations that affect public authorities is limited. Altogether, this limits the possibilities to apply user participation schools, such as User Innovation, which rely on a high degree of user-responsibility in identifying problems and solutions.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, we have seen an ever increasing push for new public e-services. Such e-services must be useful and beneficial for governments but also for citizens. In order to develop e-services that are effective, efficient and satisfactory for the citizens, the citizens have to be kept in focus and be involved in the development process. However, municipalities face pressure to develop a wide range of e-services, but at the same time battle palpable scarce resources. In this paper, a concept that addresses this problem within an ongoing research project is presented. We express this concept as ‘figurative user participation through the use and reuse of empirically grounded personas with help of persona repository including usage guidance that is shared among several municipalities’. The purpose of this paper is to empirically explore municipalities’ perceptions and attitudes towards this concept. The result shows that the municipalities are positive to the concept and consider it having great potentials. However, some challenges and pitfalls have also been brought out that need to be taken into account and addressed.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Government Information Quarterly. - : Elsevier. - 0740-624X .- 1872-9517. ; 29:2, s. 158-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been argued that user participation is important when public authorities develop e-services. At the same time there is limited research on the usefulness of existing user participation approaches in public e-service development. In this paper we, therefore, analyze how the three user participation approaches participatory design, user-centered design, and user innovation - meet the strategic e-service goals of the EU and the US. In doing so, we identify three challenges that need to be considered when choosing among these approaches: 1) unclear user target segments can impede the fulfillment of usability and relevance goals, 2) the nature of participation can impede the fulfillment of democracy goals. and 3) lack of adequate skills can impede the fulfillment of efficiency goals. • Formella processer för att underlätta studenters mobilitet
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NU2018 - Det akademiska lärarskapet.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
ReferenserSouto-Otero, M., Huisman, J., Beerkens, M., Wit, H. d., & Vujić, S. • Designing Innovative Digital Services for Government : A Business Model Canvas Adaptation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 27th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS). - : Association for Information Systems. - 9781733632508
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • E-government is not known for its progressive approach to the design of e-services. An action design research approach is taken for the development of a tool for helping e-service designers work in an innovative way. The theoretical grounding is in open service innovation, service-dominant logic and service design, and the research was conducted with the help of local government prac-titioners in Sweden. The resulting tool is an adaptation of the well-known business model canvas – the innovative digital service canvas. Other contributions include an approach to design science incorporating theory-based design principles, and the design principles themselves.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rapid pace of digitalisation provides many smarter and more efficient ways of interacting with the world, but may also lead to the exclusion of some groups. Senior citizens are one of these groups at risk. Taking the European Digital Competence Framework for Citizens as a starting point, we investigate digital survival skills for the elderly. Data was collected from digital education workshops for senior citizens organized jointly between Telia, Swedish municipalities, and the researchers. We use content analysis to understand seniors’ perceptions of which competences they need to survive in an increasingly digital environment and provide a version of the Competence Framework targeted at senior citizen inclusion. Lessons for inclusion initiatives are drawn from the results.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: e-Service Journal. - : Indiana University Press. - 1528-8226 .- 1528-8234. ; 11:1, s. 1-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article establishes theory-based design principles for constructing tools and methods for developing innovative digital services. The research method is developed from process advice offered for this task, in the context of design science. We define the objectives for the design task (solution objectives), identify and justify suitable kernel theories (service design, open innovation, service-dominant logic), and derive the principle normative elements of the chosen theories. Convergences and contradictions in the normative elements are analysed in relation to the method design task, and the prescriptive elements are synthesised into six core design principles. Implications for both the method design task, and research and practice in general are drawn.

  • Designing Advertisement Systems with Human-centered Artificial Intelligence
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Practitioners are urging using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve advertisements. Advertisers recognize the importance of incorporating AI into their strategies to remain competitive. In response to this demand, a Design Science Research (DSR) initiative has been started to create a Human-Centered AI (HCAI) tool to enhance advertisement suggestions by analyzing consumer behavior. This dissertation aims to build an advertisement optimization system with HCAI and produce an Information System Design Theory (ISDT) of that class of system. Through architectural models, methods, technological rules, and design principles, nascent Design Theory (DT) is created and serves as an initial stage towards achieving a more abstract design knowledge known as the ISDT. The action design research method is employed to construct and analyze the implemented system instance. The process involves multiple cycles of building, intervening, and evaluating. These cycles are conducted iteratively and incrementally, allowing for the gradual development of the suggested system while simultaneously generating valuable design knowledge. The system is developed and abstracted for design knowledge from both the development process and the actual tool. The dissertation presents nascent design knowledge in the form of models, technological rules, and design principles. Moreover, the dissertation places the nascent DT within the broader context of a more abstract design knowledge called ISDT. The results are then scrutinized based on various components of the DT, including purpose and scope, constructs, principles of form and function, artifact mutability, justificatory knowledge, testable propositions, principles of implementation, and expository instantiation. This dissertation discusses the DSR process, compared to various challenges encountered throughout the research project. Theoretical, empirical, and artefactual research contributions are outlined, and their implications for research and practice are discussed toward the end of the dissertation. The quality of the research is examined, considering the relevance, novelty, usefulness, feasibility, design rigor, evaluation rigor, and transparency of the artifacts produced throughout the dissertation. The dissertation concludes that it delivered ISDT. Moreover, the system serves as a valuable example of how AI can be utilized for optimizing digital advertisements. The dissertation ends with providing recommendations for future research.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: AAAI-MAKE 2021Combining Machine Learning and Knowledge Engineering. - : CEUR-WS.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marketers need new ways of generating campaigns artificially for their marketing activities. Many marketers assume proprietary systems are individualized enough. This article investigates an order of models used to measure how reliably a system can generate campaigns artificially while producing a campaign classification and generation models that are integrated into an intelligent marketing system. The order is between a Classification Model (CM) and a Generation Model (GM). The order also functions as an iterative model improvement process for developing the models by evaluating the models' accuracy distributions. The CM received a mean accuracy of 100%. The GM received 98.9% mean accuracy and a reproducibility score of 96.2%, implying the vast potential for increased resource savings, marketing precision, and less consumer annoyance. The conclusion is that the developed system can reliantly construct campaigns.

    • Autogenerated Advertisements (AGAs) can be a concern for consumers if they suspect that Artificial Intelligence (AI) was involved. Consumers may have an opposing stance against AI, leading companies to miss profit opportunities and reputation loss. Hence, companies need ways of managing consumers’ con-cerns. As a part of designing such advices we explore consumers’ discernment ability (DA) of AGAs. A quantitative survey was used to explore consumers’ DA of AGAs. In order to do this, we administered questionnaires to 233 re-spondents. A statistical analysis including Z-tests, of these responses suggests that consumers can hardly pick out AGAs. This indicates that consumers may be guessing and thus do not possess any significant DA of our AGAs.

  • Ingår i: Machine Learning, Multi Agent and Cyber Physical Systems. - : World Scientific. - 9789811269257 - 9789811269271 ; , s. 416-423
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are shaping marketing activities through digital innovations. Competition is a familiar concept for any digital retailer, and the digital transformation provides hopes for gaining a competitive edge over competitors. Those who do not adopt digital innovations risk getting outcompeted by those who do. This study aims to identify AI mar-keting (AIM) adoptions used for ad optimization with Reinforcement Learning (RL). A scoped literature review is used to find ad optimization adoptions re-search trends with RL in AIM. Scoping this is important both to research and practice as it provides spots for novel adaptations and directions of research of digital ad optimization with RL. The results of the review provide several different adoptions of ad optimization with RL in AIM. In short, the major category is Ad Relevance Optimization that takes several different forms depending on the purpose of the adoption. The underlying found themes of adoptions are Ad Attractiveness, Edge Ad, Sequential Ad and Ad Criteria Optimization. In conclusion, AIM adoptions with RL is scarce, and recommendations for future research are suggested based on the findings of the review.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents a novel taxonomy of short message service campaigns, for the purpose of building an intelligent marketing system. The main issue of mass marketing is that one size does not fit everybody. In other words, it is challenging to meet different consumer needs. With the help of artificial intelligence, marketers can be supported to overcome some of these challenges. This study uses a mixed methods approach where design science and grounded theory is used to produce a short message service campaign taxonomy for a future intelligent marketing system. Data collection consisted of 386 previously active campaigns used over 33 months to build the taxonomy. An experimental study was conducted to test the effectiveness of the proposed taxonomy. The experiments involved automatic generation of campaign messages. The validity of these campaign messages, and hence the proposed taxonomy, was ascertained by analysing the messages within a business context. The study concludes that the system, intertwined with the taxonomy, performs comparably to a regular campaign. Another proof of concept is that the business context deemed the generated campaign texts to be both semantically and syntactically similar to run them in active campaigns as experiments.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many new public eHealth Services are now being developed. Often a conventional customer-vendor process is used, where the customer is a public authority, e.g. a county council, and the vendor a commercial actor, e.g. an IT development company. In this case study the engineering process regards a novel eHealth service aiming to provide patients with online access to their electronic health record. A complicating factor in conventional customer-vendor processes for public e-services is that "the future user could be anyone". In the light of best practice in Human-Computer Interaction, this study examines the joint effort of the customer and vendor when developing novel services for citizen use. The results include delimiting factors, recommendations for public authority customers and proposed new actions for the research agenda.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of ePractice. - : European Commission. - 1988-625X. ; 20, s. 21-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A necessary activity towards moving healthcare services out of the physical premises of hospitals and into patients’ daily lives is to supply citizens with various health services via the Internet, i.e. public eHealth services. However, developing public eHealth services for a large number of heterogeneous end-users is a complex task. This case study investigated the development process of a novel eHealth service that provides patient access to electronic health records, which was developed and recently deployed within the scope of an EU project.A conventional customer-vendor process was applied that resulted in a high degree of uncertainty regarding end-user needs of this novel service. The development team tried to compensate for this weakness by using agile methods. When developing public eHealth services for citizens, it is imperative to involve potential users, to evaluate the citizens’ needs as a function of benefit, usability and security, and to handle those concepts responsibly throughout the process.

    • In the work surrounding Service-Oriented Architectures, the concept of Web Services (WS) has received a lot of attention. In e-business, WS hold great promises of positive effects. However, there is still a lack of empirical evidence showing how WS creation works, what problems may arise during this process, and what effects the WS may have on e-business organisations. This paper presents a proof of concept (PoC) focusing on activities, results and encountered problems in the process of creating a WS in an e-business setting. The purpose was to meet the need for empirical descriptions for WS in B2B, to enable the e-business collaboration to function and succeed.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thriving in the Internet era requires both Internet presence and careful development of the e-services provided using this technology. However, one major poblem is how to involve the end users of the e-service(s), something which is necessary if the e-services are to be useful and sustainable. This chapter presents a case study on the e-service development process using a major player in the travel industry as the case. The main focus is on how new technological advancements and phenomena, primarily virtual communities, can be used as a main source of end user requirements. Virtual communties are both of startegic and practical relevance and even cause a need to redefine the term "user participation." E-servies constitute a major trend for private as well as public organizations and should address Internet technology advancements when being developed.
