  • A non-hegemonic media event : The funeral of the former Swedish prime minister Karl Staaff in 1915

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this essay the media depictions of the funeral of the former Swedish prime minister Karl Staaff in 1915 are investigated. It shows that, in a pre-democratic state such as early twentieth-century Sweden, media events did not necessarily voice a hegemonic ideology or harmonious sense of community spirit. Rather, mediated public space, even at the commemoration of a former prime minister, could be imbued with political conflict. Drawing on Nick Couldry’s work on media events, I investigate conflicting media narratives, each playing a decisive part in the struggle for or against democracy in Sweden. I ask how the event and its attendees were represented. In what way was Staaff’s funeral politicized?

  • Mannosylated mucin-type immunoglobulin fusion proteins enhance antigen-specific antibody and T lymphocyte responses
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Targeting antigens to antigen-presenting cells (APC) improve their immunogenicity and capacity to induce Th1 responses and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). We have generated a mucin-type immunoglobulin fusion protein (PSGL-1/mIgG2b), which upon expression in the yeast Pichia pastoris became multivalently substituted with O-linked oligomannose structures and bound the macrophage mannose receptor (MMR) and dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule-3 grabbing non-integrin (DC-SIGN) with high affinity in vitro. Here, its effects on the humoral and cellular anti-ovalbumin (OVA) responses in C57BL/6 mice are presented.OVA antibody class and subclass responses were determined by ELISA, the generation of anti-OVA CTLs was assessed in 51Cr release assays using in vitro-stimulated immune spleen cells from the different groups of mice as effector cells and OVA peptide-fed RMA-S cells as targets, and evaluation of the type of Th cell response was done by IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5 ELISpot assays.Immunizations with the OVA − mannosylated PSGL-1/mIgG2b conjugate, especially when combined with the AbISCO®-100 adjuvant, lead to faster, stronger and broader (with regard to IgG subclass) OVA IgG responses, a stronger OVA-specific CTL response and stronger Th1 and Th2 responses than if OVA was used alone or together with AbISCO®-100. Also non-covalent mixing of mannosylated PSGL-1/mIgG2b, OVA and AbISCO®-100 lead to relatively stronger humoral and cellular responses. The O-glycan oligomannoses were necessary because PSGL-1/mIgG2b with mono- and disialyl core 1 structures did not have this effect.Mannosylated mucin-type fusion proteins can be used as versatile APC-targeting molecules for vaccines and as such enhance both humoral and cellular immune responses.

  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the last three decades of the 20th century Swedish immigrant policy went through a profound change. In the late 1960s immigrant policy were based on assimilation but during the 1970’s and 1980’s this policy was exchanged to multicultural guidelines. These multicultural guidelines were however abandoned in the late 1990s when integration became a key word in the debate about immigrants.  This thesis investigates how these changes were made possible by a shifting understanding of immigrants in state and local discourse (the last represented by Malmö municipality) by operationalizing Carol Lee Bacchis What’s the problem represented to be analysis.  Previous research has shown that the social category of immigrants during the first six decades of the 20th century understood immigrants as a threat towards the Swedish race and later the welfare state. From this perspective immigrant policy can be seen as the result of the creation of a problematized immigrant subject, a tendency that is also the case for later decades. The investigation shows that immigrants in the early 1970’s were mainly understood from a class and welfare perspective. During this period immigrants were seen as a threat towards the social cohesion of the welfare state as well as the social democratic ambitions of a raised standard of living for the working class. This understanding led to the development of a multicultural policy where immigrant culture was supported within state and local politics and by structural changes in the education system, aiming to include the category in civic life and improve their living conditions.  In the years between 1976 and 1985 the understanding of immigrants however changed. During this period immigrants became increasingly problematized for their lack of employment and a cultural difference. During the end of this period the multicultural policy changed from an emphasis on culture as a resource for social inclusion to that some parts of of a Swedish identity were not subject of choice. Furthermore, this period also lead to increased efforts at the individual level, were the policy aimed to give individual immigrants increased chances at the labor market. During the last fifteen years the 20th century immigrant policy became increasingly politicized, and immigrants became understood as radically culturally different from swedes. In this period immigrant culture were constructed as oppressive towards women and outdated when compared to the modern Swedish culture. Furthermore, the notion of immigrants as unemployed from previous decades continued to play an important part and immigrants were also conceived as living segregated. This view resulted in the creation of integration policies aiming to not handle immigrants as a from the general population different group. Instead, immigrants should become integrated in Swedish society through the general welfare with an emphasis that not all parts of a Swedish identity were choose able. The result of the investigation show that European culture became increasingly normative in the development of Swedish migrant policy, thus excluding European immigrants from the problematized immigrant subject. Thereby the globalization of migration towards Sweden led to a development were immigrant policy shifted focus from class to cultural perspectives.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis investigates 5,000 descriptions of men and women in search for a life partner of the opposite sex through classifieds 1890-1980. The advertisers’ descriptions of who they are and what they want sketches a picture of the expectations everyday people have had on how men and women should be over almost a hundred years. Previous accounts of 20th century gender relations are based on governmental and political materials. The bipartite structure of the personals advertisements is used methodologically to differentiate between the so-called “ego-descriptions” and the “alter-descriptions” - what the advertiser had to offer and what the advertiser wanted. Men's descriptions of themselves – ego descriptions – is compared to women's descriptions of the man – alter description –, and women’s descriptions of themselves – ego-description – is compared to men’s descriptions of women – alter description. Six categories were created to capture the content of the personal advertisements: 1) Breadwinner qualifications 2) Parenting qualifications 3) Homemaker qualifications 4) Bodily aspects 5) Leisure 6) Personal interests and qualifications. This study shows that men and women increasingly are described on the grounds of similar qualifications, and that both men and women are increasingly depicted with characteristics that earlier was coded as female. It also shows that children and the family became more important. Stability and security were highly appreciated in the beginning of the period, but gave way to values as mobility and opportunity in the late 1900’s. Both women and men shift from favouring material conditions to an increased focus on feelings and thoughts, and in the end of the period the life partner relationship was more about emotional closeness and the company of a like-minded individual. However, despite these more general results, it is clear that neither the images of the man nor the images woman was unambiguous, and that men and women for most of the time didn't share the same ideals. When thousands of men and women describe their dreams and needs based on the lives they live, unlike government surveys, for example, a multitude of images of the nineteenth century man and woman appear.

  • Pichia pastoris-produced mucin-type fusion proteins with multivalent O-glycan substitution as targeting molecules for mannose-specific receptors of the immune system
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Glycobiology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0959-6658 .- 1460-2423. ; 21:8, s. 1071-1086
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mannose-binding proteins like the macrophage mannose receptor (MR), the dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule-3 grabbing non-integrin (DC-SIGN) and mannose-binding lectin (MBL) play crucial roles in both innate and adaptive immune responses. Immunoglobulin fusion proteins of the P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1/mIgG2b) carrying mostly O-glycans and, as a control, the a1-acid glycoprotein (AGP/mIgG2b) carrying mainly N-linked glycans were stably expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris. P. pastoris-produced PSGL-1/mIgG2b was shown to carry O-glycans that mediated strong binding to mannose-specific lectins in a lectin array and were susceptible to cleavage by a-mannosidases including an a1,2- but not an a1,6-mannosidase. Electrospray ionization - ion trap mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) confirmed the presence of O-glycans containing up to 9 hexoses with the penta- and hexasaccharides being the predominant ones. a1,2- and a1,3-linked, but not a1,6-linked, mannose residues were detected by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy confirming the results of the mannosidase cleavage. The apparent equilibrium dissociation constants for binding of PNGase F-treated mannosylated PSGL-1/mIgG2b to MR, DC-SIGN and MBL were shown by surface plasmon resonance to be 126, 56 and 16 nM, respectively. In conclusion, PSGL-1/mIgG2b expressed in P. pastoris carried O-glycans mainly comprised of a-linked mannoses and with up to nine residues. It bound mannose-specific receptors with high apparent affinity and may become a potent targeting molecule for these receptors in vivo.

  • Class : Feminist and cultural perspectives
  • 2016
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is hardly any discussion of class that does not in some way relate to the theories of Marx and Weber. So profound was the impact of their ideas, that their writings are often perceived as the only original and most reliable interpretations of class society. But Marx and Weber were neither the first, nor last, to talk about class and they did so based on the specific conditions prevalent in their own communities. 'Class' explains this complex field using cultural, sociological and feminist perspectives. It deepens our understanding of the problems of class and uses illuminating examples from media, popular culture and literature that explain current class analysis. 'Class' is an 'elegant, lucid comprehensive introduction' that broadens our understanding of the concept and the immense power that it exerts by way of in- and exclusions.

  • Constructions of Class in Swedish Women’s Magazines
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of my paper is to present some examples from my research about how class was constructed linguistically in Svensk Damtidning (Swedish Woman’s Magazine) at the beginning of the 20th century, to display the discourses that governed people’s notions of themselves and others, and the violent disagreements over different representations. By way of conclusion I argue that is fruitful to abandon the great narrative of the working class's rise and probable fall, not only because 'the working class' never existed other than as a figure of speech – although one that certainly governed people’s self-image and thus found material expression in the real world – but also because this figure of speech was far from alone in its own presumed heyday. Thus, with a greater knowledge of the genealogy of the term 'class', in its broadest historical sense class is still relevant: as a designation with origin far back in the 18th century.

  • Herstory revisited
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandia. - 0036-5483. ; 78:2, suplement, s. 42-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text deals with a very particular dilemma: how should I, a post-linguistic-turn gender historian, deal with the reality that women are constantly excluded from the continuing writing of the past (or are silenced in the history that is played out in front of my eyes) without falling back on the herstory tradition that the majority of us academics say we have left behind? The problem is discussed in theoretical terms, but also empirically in relation to two specific situations. The first is a commission to write a history of women and the women’s movement for the Swedish city of Lund. The second is an invitation to address a Social Democratic women’s association on the subject of the Swedish general election campaign of 2010, and more specifically the media resistance shown towards Mona Sahlin, the female candidate for prime minister. With the help of a further example – the play Historia A by the dramatic arts collective Potato Potato, a reaction to the omission of women from Swedish school history textbooks – I will conclude by illustrating the new path I would advocate: a very queer women’s history – Herstory revisited,or Herstory 2.0.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandia. - 0036-5483. ; 80:2, s. 36-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to offer an object lesson in how historians could make use of feature film as primary source material if they were to use the analytical tools developed in the field of film studies and by historians who started to work with film in the 1970s and 1980s. My own work on representations of maidservants in Swedish feature films in the 1930s and 1940s is used as a case in point. As a concrete example, I consider the trail- blazing blockbuster Vi som går köksvägen (Gustaf Molander, 1932, ‘Servants’ Entrance’, though not to be confused with the American film of the same name of 1934). In dialogue with the fields of film studies and ”film and history”, I argue for a historically informed film analysis that treats feature film’s form and style, and its ‘re-historicization’, by relating it to the wider context of its production, reception, and the film culture in general. Further, a natural starting-point in any study of the representations of a certain category of people, such as maidservants, would be the different characters in the films in mind. Following the film scholar Richard Dyer, I suggest concentrating in the first instance on how the film stars act in their roles, considering each as a complex intersection between film, film culture, and society as a whole. Again referring to Dyer, I hold that each character captures a certain set of societal principals and values, sifting out types from stereotypes, iden- tifying the ones who represent the overall ideology of the film’s narrative and those who do not. Taking a close look at Vi som går köksvägen, I demonstrate how all these things come together, in an analysis that deepens our understanding of this particular film as a historical source for Swedish society in the 1930s. Paying especial attention to the characters in the film, I discuss various aspects of the film’s form (story, plot, narration, parallelisms) and style (setting, properties, acting, make-up, and lightning), in the course of which I relate to other types of material, shedding light on the film’s production and reception and on the construction of Tutta Rolf as a Swedish film star. I conclude that it is a surprisingly radical film, celebrating the strong new woman who was part of the new modern Sweden.

    • This article is an examination of the short film “The funeral procession of Hjalmar Branting”. Branting was the first Swedish social democratic prime minister. When he died in February 1925 it was perceived as a great national loss in a country still profoundly marked by differences of class and gender. By way of analyzing the film, in the context of contemporary press and of others sources concerning the planning of the occasion, I discuss the film as an early example of a so called media event. In this light the funeral is explained as a complex rite of national formation.

  • Journalistic Practices in Media Events Before Broadcasting : The Public Funeral of King Oscar II in Early Twentieth-Century Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journalism Studies. - 1461-670X. ; 23:12, s. 1548-1565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to Dayan and Katz, media events require live transmission, firmly dating their birth to the age of television. However, the application of such a media-centric criterion runs the risk of projecting an a-historical perspective to the phenomenon as such. By contrast, using the example of the public funeral of the Swedish King Oscar II in 1907, the purpose of this article is to scrutinize and categorize the different efforts on part of the journalists to create media events before broadcasting. Four types of journalistic practices are uncovered: (1) highlighting the attention of media in a broad sense in public space (such as church bells, flags, shop windows, etc.) as well as journalistic presence, to endow eventfulness to the occasion; (2) acting as witness ambassador to evoke the senses of the media audience; (3) mediating the witnessing public participating on location to emphasise the engagement of the whole society; (4) using different kinds of narrativization, such as cross-cutting, to bring a sense of immediacy to the reporting. In terms of theory, the ambition is to draw attention to the journalist’s role as a historical narrator, as well as to bring the historical perspective back to the discussion on media events.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Kvinnovetenskaplig tidskrift. - 0348-8365. ; :3-4, s. 63-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Postmodernism has been pointed out – from both left and right, from feminists and anti-feminists – as the dangerous ”other”. Therefore it is provoking to apply postmodern methods and insights to modern class theory. By way of reasoning with Karl Marx and Max Weber, and with older as well as contemporary feminist critics of the concept of class such as Gayle Rubin, Joan Acker, Beverley Skeggs, Nancy Fraser and Judith Butler, I aim to find reconciliation between feminism and class beyond the great modern class narrative.
