- SAOL Plus – a new Swedish electronic dictionary System requirements: Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/Vista In September 2007, a CD version of the Swedish Academy Glossary (SAOL) was released, SAOL Plus, which includes all used inflected forms and an advanced Fuzzy Search option, based on pronunciation. The printed version has loong been considered the (unofficial) norm for spelling, inflection and pronunciation of Swedish. It is not a traditional dictionary with complete definitions, although many lemmas are defined or commented. It contains 125 000 lemmas, which is about twice as many as other Swedish monolingual dictionaries. SAOL Plus has the standard search functions, as well as more advanced search options due to the electronic format, such as article search and truncation search. It contains more inflected forms in number and detail than the printed version, and these are shown in full text and made searchable. Thanks to its built-in tool for Fuzzy Search, SAOL Plus is very useful for people with reading and writing disorders, as well as for those for whom Swedish is a second language. SAOL Plus can be an asset for the public as well as for linguists, teachers etc. SMDB, the Swedish Morphological Database, contains all lemmas from SAOL and their inflected forms, morpho-syntactically tagged. However, the database is constructed from all theoretically possible inflections of the lemmas. Some inflections are not grammatically correct or generally accepted, and therefore it has been necessary to extract the semantically plausible forms. Via a tag program connected to a 200 million word corpus, frequency of occurrence of specific word forms can easily be extracted. One challenge has been to scrutinize one million word forms in order to decide which forms should be presented on the cd. SAOL Plus has a tool called Fuzzy Search, which efficiently handles misspelling. This helps the user get to the target word, even if the user doesn’t know how it is spelled. The module for handling misspelling is based on both pronunciation and transposition of letters. The Fuzzy Search can easily be used as a spell-checker together with Word. To the best of our knowledge, this fuzzy search (and spell-checker) based on pronunciation, has few equivalents in its field.

- The article discusses lexicographic perspectives of the Swedish plural with the suffix -s. Traditionally, plural nouns ending in -s, for example avokados ‘avocados’, are considered colloquial speech; the formal way of writing the plural in question is avokador or avokadoer. However, since the Swedish Academy grammar included a noun declension indicating plurals with the suffix -s, plural with -s seems to have become more accepted, at least among language planners.

- Swedish computational lexicography has a long history at the University of Gothenburg, both in its primary role as a central aspect of the scientific study of vocabulary and also as an infrastructural component for conducting research based on language data. Starting in the 1960s, the Språkdata research group pioneered corpus-supported lexicography for Swedish, forming the basis for successive editions of the two main descriptive dictionaries of contemporary Swedish, SAOL and SO. Language technological lexical resources for Swedish have been developed by the research unit/research infrastructure Språkbanken Text since the turn of the millennium, most recently in the framework of the Swedish FrameNet++initiative. After two decades of separation, these two largely mutually independently developed strands of computational lexicography have now joined forces under the umbrella of Språkbanken’s lexical research infrastructure to advance the field technically, methodologically, and scientifically.

- In recent years, most dictionary publishers have developed dictionary apps. However, in comparison with the comprehensive scientific study of printed and web-based dictionaries, conducted research on this kind of lexicographical resource is so far limited. This article discusses four monolingual dictionary apps developed by The Society for Danish Language and Literature. The focus is on the contemporary dictionary The Danish Dictionary. Different search functions are discussed, as well as how data is presented. The article also deals with what kinds of dictionaries are best suited for the app format. A key issue is whether this format really does render all dictionaries justice, and if app development is always advisable from a user’s perspective.

- Developing an app version of a printed dictionary is a new challenge faced by lexicographers. Lexicographers involved in the app development process must consider fundamental lexicographic aspects as well as learn to understand technological and usage issues inherent to the new media. An inevitable question is how closely the content and layout can be made to match the printed dictionary while still offering ‘digital’ functionality such as linking, collapsed sections, audio, etc. Only a few reports discussing these issues have so far been published. The aim of our paper is to further advance the exchange of knowledge and experience by sharing our observations made during the development of a new app corresponding to the comprehensive printed dictionary, Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien (the Contemporary Dictionary of the Swedish Academy, 2009). The app is the result of close cooperation between the financer The Swedish Academy, lexicographers and system developers at the Department of Swedish, University of Gothenburg and Isolve AB, a Stockholm-based app development agency specializing in dictionary apps.

- Svenska Akademiens ordlista (SAOL 14, 2015) spelar en viktig roll inom svensk språkvetenskaplig infrastruktur, något som framkommer i denna artikel. Vidare presenteras preliminära resultat av en undersökning av hur frekventa uppslagsorden i SAOL egentligen är i olika delkorpusar med modern allmänspråklig svenska. För att ordlistan även fortsättningsvis ska kunna användas inom svensk ordforskning, vid språkstudier m.m., men också bli mer central inom språkteknologiska sammanhang, är det avgörande att SAOL:s uppslagsord vilar på vetenskaplig grund, moderna språkteknologiska metoder och uppdaterade korpusmaterial. Fokus i artikeln ligger på de uppslagsord som inte finns belagda i korpusmaterialet, och som därmed kan tänkas mönstras ut inför den kommande femtonde upplagan.

- Mobile application software – the app format – offers new ways of using dictionaries. However, so far, only very few user studies of dictionary apps have been conducted. In this article, we present and discuss the results of a web survey on the use of the app version of the monolingual Svenska Akademiens ordlista (the Swedish Academy Glossary, 13th edition, 2006), henceforth the SAOL. The results show that the SAOL app is used mostly for checking spelling. A more surprising result, since the SAOL is not a definition dictionary, is that it is also frequently used for checking the meaning of words. For forthcoming versions of the glossary, the users request more definitions. Regarding the app, users wish for improved search functions, such as wildcard (truncated) search and cross references. The current app (of the 13th edition) is free. A majority of the users state that they are willing to pay a small sum for an app version of the 14th edition of the SAOL.

- The SWEGOT lexical resources framework consists of a database model, sample SQL scripts for database update, configuration text files, and program files written in the PHP programming language providing an easy-to-use web interface for searching, comparing and accessing collections of lexical data, such as glossaries. The database model is flexible and additional resources can easily be added with limited configuration needs. The user interface provides several methods for limiting the search results and the presentation grid as suitable for the user. An advanced query interface facilitates comparisons between different lexical resources such as ‘entries found in BookA and BookC, but not in BookB’. Actual access to each lexical resource is provided via image files or links to external resources, as defined separately for each ‘book’.

- The article presents the results of a survey on dictionary use in Europe, focusing on general monolingual dictionaries. The survey is the broadest survey of dictionary use to date, covering close to 10,000 dictionary users (and non-users) in nearly thirty countries. Our survey covers varied user groups, going beyond the students and translators who have tended to dominate such studies thus far. The survey was delivered via an online survey platform, in language versions specific to each target country. It was completed by 9,562 respondents, over 300 respondents per country on average. The survey consisted of the general section, which was translated and presented to all participants, as well as country-specific sections for a subset of 11 countries, which were drafted by collaborators at the national level. Volymen innehåller 30 bidrag som bygger på inlägg från konferensen i form av plenarföreläsningar, sektionsföredrag och posterpresentationer. Artiklarna spänner innehållsligt över ett brett fält, men samtliga anlägger någon form av lexikografiskt perspektiv. Flera av dem anknyter till konferensens tema Lexikografiska utmaningar. - The minireview describes the state-of-the-art of Swedish monolingual lexicography. The main actors in the field, both commercial and non-commercial, are mentioned alongside with the description of lexicographic products that have been offered by them to the lexicon users. The minireview makes it clear that there is an obvious tendency among the Swedish dictionary users to abandon paper-based dictionaries and switch over to online portals and apps, which influences the practices adopted by commercial publishing houses, such as Norstedts, Bonniers, Natur & Kultur. Among the leading non-commercial players, the Swedish Academy, the Swedish Language Bank, Institute for Language and Folklore are named. Swedish monolingual lexicography offers, however, dictionaries produced not only by experts but also by non-experts (i.e. using the efforts of the crowd).
