  • The Sustainable Stewardship Management Model for Green IS
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 29th Annual Americas Conference on Information Systems, AMCIS 2023. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9781713893592
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Triple bottom-line challenges are increasingly related to the long-term survival of companies. Both researchers and businesses understand that the transformation towards a sustainable future is dependent on green IS initiatives. However, companies base their decisions on business cases when investing in IS. Many of the required changes that green IS can offer—especially when it comes to new systems that require new business models—are not captured by business cases. This paper presents a model that widens the perspective on value creation. The presented Sustainable Stewardship Management Model (SSMM) allows companies that strive for a stewardship role to evaluate both existing and new forms of green IS by combining casual and effectual decision-making. The model is a result of a collaboration with several large Swedish commercial real estate companies, their tenants, and a non-governmental organization (NGO). The model will be tested in a follow-up project.

  • The Transcending Business Case for Sustainable Services
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent research underscores the advantages for incumbent firms in developing services that addressglobal challenges. However, the pursuit of such strategic service innovations often faces obstacles asfirms rely on a predefined, structured decision-making process known as the business case to guidetheir investments in pioneering sustainability initiatives. The traditional business case approach todecision-making has drawn criticism for its limitations in fostering transformative services thatredefine value propositions and propel markets toward sustainability. This study develops analternative business case model for evaluating the potential of innovative sustainability services basedon a service-dominant (S-D) logic foundation, emphasizing systems change through effectuation and abroader stakeholder perspective. By adopting an abductive approach centered on challenges andinsights articulated by managers in the Swedish real estate industry, we develop a model that offersdirectional guidance for both evaluating current and new services for sustainability. The result – atranscending business case model – represents an early S-D logic artifact, enabling incumbent firms todevelop new services in a manner akin to their assessments and implementation of existing services. The model carries significant theoretical and managerial implications into how researchers and firmscan contribute meaningfully to addressing grand challenges.

  • L.M. Ericsson's internationalization in Africa from 1892 to 2012 : A study of key factors, critical events, and core mechanisms
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis identifies three important shortcomings in firm internationalization research. The first problem is that the field has generally neglected the role of time and history, and evaluations of how well theories of firm internationalization cope with the test of time are therefore limited. The second matter is that the entire continent Africa has been and remains almost a blind spot in firm internationalization research generally. The third and more specific issue is that knowledge of the internationalization of telecom-vendors is limited. This thesis simultaneously addresses all three shortcomings through a study of the history of telecom-vendor Ericsson’s internationalization on the African continent between 1892 and 2012. A mechanism-based model is proposed based on analyses of the theoretical affiliations of key factors and critical events in the history of Ericsson in Africa. This mechanism-based model clearly demonstrates the need to study the process of firm internationalization from a multifaceted view, and it challenges the established, more universal theories of firm internationalization. This multifaceted view shows firm internationalization to be a co-evolutionary process driven by the accumulation of local knowledge, the establishment of relationships, and the goal to discover opportunities. However, the paradox of this view is that it requires having context-specific models of firm internationalization. These models must be limited, at the very least, to specific industrial settings and specific foreign territories, because of the need to consider important external aspects such as competition, customer selection, and fundamental economic prerequisites.

  • The Role of the Pontonier in the Trigger Phase in the Internationalization into Emerging Markets
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IB´s role in building a better and stronger global economy.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By advancing the concept of pontonier this paper analyses the trigger of the internationalization into emerging markets. Departing from the idea that institutional distance functions as a barrier between different country markets and that the network’s structure contains gaps, the paper argues that a specific actor, who holds a position and possesses knowledge, can be instrumental in the entering firm’s internationalization. In light of this the paper introduces the concept of pontonier. Based on 22 cases from bachelor, master and doctoral theses written in Sweden we analyze the position, the knowledge, the action and the motives of the pontonier in order to develop the concept. After this the paper advances a tentative model of the pontonier’s bridge building in the trigger phase of the entry into emerging markets.

  • Graftee and Grafting in Firm Internationalization
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of East-West Business. - : Routledge. - 1066-9868 .- 1528-6959.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on enhancing the understanding of how firm internationalization is triggered by investigating how firms cope with the lack of knowledge and networks when entering a foreign market. More specifically we are interested in answering the following research question: How do firms enter foreign markets without market-specific knowledge and market-specific network insidership? To this end, the present study implements a case study of 12 Swedish firms internationalizing into emerging markets. The study found that firms “graft” expert individuals to help firms penetrate foreign markets where they have no prior history or experience. Further, we observed the qualities of a specific type of actor we refer to as a “graftee” by describing grafting actions and showing how these graftees help firms acquire experiential knowledge and network insidership. Our empirical evidence shows that grafting impacts the form and process of internationalization, sometimes enabling an effectuation-driven market entry while, at other times, enabling a causation-driven process.
