  • Interplanetary coronal mass ejection observed at STEREO-A, Mars, comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, Saturn, and New Horizons en route to Pluto : Comparison of its Forbush decreases at 1.4, 3.1, and 9.9 AU

  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 122:8, s. 7865-7890
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss observations of the journey throughout the Solar System of a large interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) that was ejected at the Sun on 14 October 2014. The ICME hit Mars on 17 October, as observed by the Mars Express, Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN Mission (MAVEN), Mars Odyssey, and Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) missions, 44h before the encounter of the planet with the Siding-Spring comet, for which the space weather context is provided. It reached comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which was perfectly aligned with the Sun and Mars at 3.1 AU, as observed by Rosetta on 22 October. The ICME was also detected by STEREO-A on 16 October at 1 AU, and by Cassini in the solar wind around Saturn on the 12 November at 9.9AU. Fortuitously, the New Horizons spacecraft was also aligned with the direction of the ICME at 31.6 AU. We investigate whether this ICME has a nonambiguous signature at New Horizons. A potential detection of this ICME by Voyager 2 at 110-111 AU is also discussed. The multispacecraft observations allow the derivation of certain properties of the ICME, such as its large angular extension of at least 116 degrees, its speed as a function of distance, and its magnetic field structure at four locations from 1 to 10 AU. Observations of the speed data allow two different solar wind propagation models to be validated. Finally, we compare the Forbush decreases (transient decreases followed by gradual recoveries in the galactic cosmic ray intensity) due to the passage of this ICME at Mars, comet 67P, and Saturn.

  • Exoplanet status report: Observation, characterization and evolution of exoplanets and their host stars
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Solar System Research. - 1608-3423 .- 0038-0946. ; 44:4, s. 290-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After the discovery of more than 400 planets beyond our Solar System, the characterization of exoplanets as well as their host stars can be considered as one of the fastest growing fields in space science during the past decade. The characterization of exoplanets can only be carried out in a well coordinated interdisciplinary way which connects planetary science, solar/stellar physics and astrophysics. We present a status report on the characterization of exoplanets and their host stars by reviewing the relevant space- and ground-based projects. One finds that the previous strategy changed from space mission concepts which were designed to search, find and characterize Earth-like rocky exoplanets to: A statistical study of planetary objects in order to get information about their abundance, an identification of potential target and finally its analysis. Spectral analysis of exoplanets is mandatory, particularly to identify bio-signatures on Earth-like planets. Direct characterization of exoplanets should be done by spectroscopy, both in the visible and in the infrared spectral range. The way leading to the direct detection and characterization of exoplanets is then paved by several questions, either concerning the pre-required science or the associated observational strategy.

  • A comparison of very old patients admitted to intensive care unit after acute versus elective surgery or intervention
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of critical care. - : W B SAUNDERS CO-ELSEVIER INC. - 0883-9441 .- 1557-8615. ; 52, s. 141-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: We aimed to evaluate differences in outcome between patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) after elective versus acute surgery in a multinational cohort of very old patients (80 years; VIP). Predictors of mortality, with special emphasis on frailty, were assessed. Methods: In total, 5063 VIPs were induded in this analysis, 922 were admitted after elective surgery or intervention, 4141 acutely, with 402 after acute surgery. Differences were calculated using Mann-Whitney-U test and Wilcoxon test. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to assess associations with mortality. Results: Compared patients admitted after acute surgery, patients admitted after elective surgery suffered less often from frailty as defined as CFS (28% vs 46%; p < 0.001), evidenced lower SOFA scores (4 +/- 5 vs 7 +/- 7; p < 0.001). Presence of frailty (CFS >4) was associated with significantly increased mortality both in elective surgery patients (7% vs 12%; p = 0.01), in acute surgery (7% vs 12%; p = 0.02).Conclusions: VIPs admitted to ICU after elective surgery evidenced favorable outcome over patients after acute surgery even after correction for relevant confounders. Frailty might be used to guide clinicians in risk stratification in both patients admitted after elective and acute surgery.

  • Mars plasma system response to solar wind disturbances during solar minimum
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 122:6, s. 6611-6634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is a phenomenological description of the ionospheric plasma and induced magnetospheric boundary (IMB) response to two different types of upstream solar wind events impacting Mars in March 2008, at the solar minimum. A total of 16 Mars Express orbits corresponding to five consecutive days is evaluated. Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory-B (STEREO-B) at 1AU and Mars Express and Mars Odyssey at 1.644AU detected the arrival of a small transient interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME-like) on the 6 and 7 of March, respectively. This is the first time that this kind of small solar structure is reported at Mars's distance. In both cases, it was followed by a large increase in solar wind velocity that lasted for similar to 10days. This scenario is simulated with the Wang-Sheeley-Arge (WSA) - ENLIL + Cone solar solar wind model. At Mars, the ICME-like event caused a strong compression of the magnetosheath and ionosphere, and the recovery lasted for similar to 3 orbits (similar to 20h). After that, the fast stream affected the upper ionosphere and the IMB, which radial and tangential motions in regions close to the subsolar point are analyzed. Moreover, a compression in the Martian plasma system is also observed, although weaker than after the ICME-like impact, and several magnetosheath plasma blobs in the upper ionosphere are detected by Mars Express. We conclude that, during solar minimum and at aphelion, small solar wind structures can create larger perturbations than previously expected in the Martian system.

  • Sequential extraction of sulfide-rich tailings remediated by the application of till cover, Kristineberg mine, northern Sweden
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 299:1-3, s. 207-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A sequential extraction has been carried out on sulfide-rich mine tailings. The purpose was to investigate how elements released by oxidation are secondarily retained in the tailings and the possible consequences of the remediation. After investigating the solid tailings, seven samples were chosen for sequential extractions. Two samples were oxidised, situated just above the oxidation front, two samples from just below the former oxidation front with increased concentrations of several elements, two unoxidised samples were from an intermediate depth, and the deepest sample was from the tailings-peat boundary at the bottom of the impoundment. Five phases were extracted: adsorbed/exchangeable/carbonate, labile organics, amorphous Fe-oxyhydroxides/Mn-oxides, crystalline Fe-oxides, and organics/sulfides. The addition from dried porewater to the extracted fractions has been calculated and considered as minor. In the oxidised tailings, the sulfide fraction still dominates for elements such as Fe, S, Cd, Co, Cu, Hg and Zn, although the concentrations are low compared to the unoxidised tailings. Generally, the second most important fraction is the adsorbed/exchangeable/carbonate fraction. Below the oxidation front, the sulfide content of the tailings sharply increases. In the secondary enrichment zone, the total element concentrations increase compared with the deeper unoxidised samples, mainly due to secondary retention. For some elements, secondary retention is greater than the total amount extracted for the deeper unoxidised samples. In the secondary enrichment zone the adsorbed/exchangeable/carbonate fraction represents approximately 20 wt.% or more for Cd, Co, Mn, Ni and Zn. The amorphous iron oxyhydroxide or the crystalline iron oxide fractions are less important at this level, although for As, Ba and Cu the amorphous iron oxyhydroxide fraction represents up to 20 wt.%. At the lower border of the enrichment zone, the total concentration for most metals is lower, but the importance of the adsorbed/exchangeable/carbonate fraction is further enhanced for Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn. These elements have 35-60 wt.% of the total amount from this fraction. For As, Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb, the secondary fractions extracted (extractions A-D) represent between 60 and 80 wt.% of the total content. At greater depth in the impoundment the relative importance of the adsorbed/exchangeable/carbonate fraction decreases, whilst the importance of amorphous iron oxyhydroxide and crystalline iron oxide fractions increases. The adsorbed/exchangeable/carbonate fraction is the most easily remobilised fraction. A raised groundwater table previously situated below the enrichment zone may result in the release of secondarily retained metals. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • High frequency of contact allergy to gold in patients with endovascular coronary stents
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Dermatology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1365-2133 .- 0007-0963. ; 157:4, s. 730-738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Stent implantation is an effective method for treatment of atherosclerotic disease. Factors predisposing to in-stent restenosis are still largely unknown. Contact allergy to metal ions eluted from the stent has been suggested to be a risk factor. Objectives To explore whether there is a possible induction of contact allergy to metals used in stents among patients with a stainless steel stent containing nickel (Ni stent) and patients with a gold-plated stent (Au stent). Methods Adults (n = 484) treated with coronary stent implantation participated in the study with patch testing. The study design was retrospective and cross-sectional with no assessment of contact allergy before stenting. Age- and sex-matched patch-tested patients with dermatitis (n = 447) served as controls. Results Of Au-stented patients, 54 of 146 (37%) were allergic to gold compared with 85 of 447 (19%) controls (P < 0.001). Within the stented population there were no statistically significant differences in contact allergy to gold or nickel between Ni-stented and Au-stented patients. In multivariate models where other risk factors for contact allergy to gold were considered, the Au stent showed a trend towards statistical significance (odds ratio 1.43, 95% confidence interval 0.95-2.16; P = 0.09). Conclusions As the frequency of contact allergy to gold is higher in stented patients independent of stent type it suggests a previous sensitization. However, several pieces of circumstantial evidence as well as statistical analysis indicate the possibility of sensitization in the coronary vessel by the Au stent. Ni stents and Au stents should not be ruled out as risk factors for induction of contact allergy to these metals.

  • Cervical and Amniotic Fluid Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 and Interleukin-6 Concentrations in Preterm Pregnancies with or without Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Fetal diagnosis and therapy. - : S. Karger AG. - 1421-9964 .- 1015-3837. ; 46:2, s. 103-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • <b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Intra-amniotic inflammation is defined by elevated inflammatory biomarkers in the amniotic fluid (AF), either due to microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC) or sterile inflammation. Amniocentesis being an invasive procedure, we wanted to investigate whether elevated matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) or interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations could be detected from cervical fluid samples. <b><i>Materials and Methods:</i></b> This prospective study included 67 women with singleton nondiabetic pregnancies with or without preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) between 22+0 and 37+0 weeks of gestation. Simultaneous AF and cervical samples were obtained. <b><i>Results:</i></b> In women without PPROM, cervical MMP-8 concentrations correlated with AF MMP-8 concentrations (<i>r</i>S = 0.466, <i>p</i> = 0.002), but cervical IL-6 did not correlate with AF IL-6 (<i>r</i>S = 0.277, <i>p</i> = 0.076). In PPROM cases no correlations were found. Women with MIAC had higher concentrations of AF MMP-8 and AF IL-6 compared to women without MIAC regardless of membrane status. However, only women without PPROM had higher concentrations of cervical MMP-8 in proven MIAC. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> In women without PPROM, cervical MMP-8 concentration reflects the magnitude of AF MMP-8, thus potentially guiding the selection of patients benefitting from amniocentesis.

  • Fermi-surface effect on magnetic interlayer coupling
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 70:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The oscillating magnetic interlayer coupling of Fe over spacer layers consisting of CuxPdt-x alloys is investigated by first principles density functional theory. The amplitude, period, and phase of the coupling, as well as the disorder-induced decay, are analyzed in detail and the consistency to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida theory is discussed. An effect of the Fermi surface nesting strength on the amplitude is established from first principles calculations. An unexpected variation of the phase and disorder-induced decay is obtained and the results are discussed in terms of asymptotics.

  • Tissue-specific control of mitochondrial respiration in obesity-related insulin resistance and diabetes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: American journal of physiology. Endocrinology and metabolism. - : American Physiological Society. - 1522-1555 .- 0193-1849. ; 302:6, s. E731-E739
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tissue-specific role of mitochondrial respiratory capacity in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes is unclear. We determined mitochondrial function in glycolytic and oxidative skeletal muscle and liver from lean (+/ ?) and obese diabetic ( db/db) mice. In lean mice, the mitochondrial respiration pattern differed between tissues. Tissue-specific mitochondrial profiles were then compared between lean and db/db mice. In liver, mitochondrial respiratory capacity and protein expression, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), was decreased in db/db mice, consistent with increased mitochondrial fission. In glycolytic muscle, mitochondrial respiration, as well as protein and mRNA expression of mitochondrial markers, was increased in db/db mice, suggesting increased mitochondrial content and fatty acid oxidation capacity. In oxidative muscle, mitochondrial complex I function and PGC-1α and mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) protein levels were decreased in db/db mice, along with increased level of proteins related to mitochondrial dynamics. In conclusion, mitochondrial respiratory performance is under the control of tissue-specific mechanisms and is not uniformly altered in response to obesity. Furthermore, insulin resistance in glycolytic skeletal muscle can be maintained by a mechanism independent of mitochondrial dysfunction. Conversely, insulin resistance in liver and oxidative skeletal muscle from db/db mice is coincident with mitochondrial dysfunction.

  • Exchange interactions in paramagnetic amorphous and disordered crystalline CrN-based systems
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 88:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a first principles supercell methodology for the calculation of exchange interactions of magnetic materials with arbitrary degrees of structural and chemical disorder in their high temperature paramagnetic state. It is based on a projection of the total magnetic energy of the system onto local pair clusters, allowing the interactions to vary independently as a response to their local environments. We demonstrate our method by deriving the distance dependent exchange interactions in vibrating crystalline CrN, a Ti0.5Cr0.5N solid solution as well as in amorphous CrN. Our method reveals strong local environment effects in all three systems. In the amorphous case we use the full set of exchange interactions in a search for the noncollinear magnetic ground state.

  • CMEs and SEPs During November-December 2020 : A Challenge for Real-Time Space Weather Forecasting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Space Weather. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 1542-7390. ; 20:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Predictions of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar energetic particles (SEPs) are a central issue in space weather forecasting. In recent years, interest in space weather predictions has expanded to include impacts at other planets beyond Earth as well as spacecraft scattered throughout the heliosphere. In this sense, the scope of space weather science now encompasses the whole heliospheric system, and multipoint measurements of solar transients can provide useful insights and validations for prediction models. In this work, we aim to analyze the whole inner heliospheric context between two eruptive flares that took place in late 2020, that is, the M4.4 flare of 29 November and the C7.4 flare of 7 December. This period is especially interesting because the STEREO-A spacecraft was located similar to 60 degrees east of the Sun-Earth line, giving us the opportunity to test the capabilities of "predictions at 360 degrees" using remote-sensing observations from the Lagrange L1 and L5 points as input. We simulate the CMEs that were ejected during our period of interest and the SEPs accelerated by their shocks using the WSA-Enlil-SEPMOD modeling chain and four sets of input parameters, forming a "mini-ensemble." We validate our results using in situ observations at six locations, including Earth and Mars. We find that, despite some limitations arising from the models' architecture and assumptions, CMEs and shock-accelerated SEPs can be reasonably studied and forecast in real time at least out to several tens of degrees away from the eruption site using the prediction tools employed here.
