  • Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Asymmetrical Planetary Nebulae VI conference, Proceedings of the conference held 4-8 November, 2013. ; , s. 106-
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS) is one of the largest Open Time programs carried out by the Herschel Space Observatory, by which we simultaneously probe the dust and gas components of the circumstellar environments of evolved stars. HerPlaNS is part of a community-wide panchromatic (from X-ray to Radio) observational initiative to furnish substantial PN data resources that would allow us - PN astronomers - to tackle a multitude of issues in PN physics. In this contribution we will give a general overview of the survey and a glimpse of what the data can tell us using NGC 6781 as an example.

    • Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS) is a far-IR imaging and spectroscopic survey of planetary nebulae, performedwith the Herschel Space Observatory, aiming at (1) establishing the spatially-resolved far-IR characteristics of the target nebulae and (2) understanding the energetics and shaping history of the circumstellar nebulae. Below we briefly demonstrate the breadth and depth of the HerPlaNS data set using one of the targets, NGC6781, as an example, and explore expectations in the era of SPICA, the next-generation far-IR mission.

    • Context. This is the first of a series of investigations into far-IR characteristics of 11 planetary nebulae (PNe) under the Herschel Space Observatory open time 1 program, Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS). Aims. Using the HerPlaNS data set, we look into the PN energetics and variations of the physical conditions within the target nebulae. In the present work, we provide an overview of the survey, data acquisition and processing, and resulting data products. Methods. We performed (1) PACS/SPIRE broadband imaging to determine the spatial distribution of the cold dust component in the target PNe and (2) PACS/SPIRE spectral-energy-distribution and line spectroscopy to determine the spatial distribution of the gas component in the target PNe. Results. For the case of NGC 6781, the broadband maps confirm the nearly pole-on barrel structure of the amorphous carbon-rich dust shell and the surrounding halo having temperatures of 26-40 K. The PACS/SPIRE multiposition spectra show spatial variations of far-.IR lines that reflect the physical stratification of the nebula. We demonstrate that spatially resolved far-IR line diagnostics yield the (T-e, n(e)) profiles, from which distributions of ionized, atomic, and molecular gases can be determined. Direct comparison of the dust and gas column mass maps constrained by the HerPlaNS data allows to construct an empirical gas-to-dust mass ratio map, which shows a range of ratios with the median of 195 +/- 110. The present analysis yields estimates of the total mass of the shell to be 0.86 M-circle dot, consisting of 0.54 M-circle dot of ionized gas, 0.12 M-circle dot of atomic gas, 0.2 M-circle dot of molecular gas, and 4 x 10(-3) M-circle dot of dust grains. These estimates' also suggest that the central star of about 1.5 M-circle dot initial mass is terminating its PN evolution onto the white dwarf cooling track. Conclusions. The HerPlaNS data provide various diagnostics for both the dust and gas components in a spatially resolved manner. In the forthcoming papers of the HerPlaNS series we will explore the HerPlaNS data set fully for the entire sample of 11 PNe.

  • Herschel Planetary Nebula Survey (HerPlaNS) First detection of OH+ in planetary nebulae
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. We report the first detections of OH+ emission in planetary nebulae (PNe). Methods. As part of an imaging and spectroscopy survey of 11 PNe in the far-IR using the PACS and SPIRE instruments aboard the Herschel Space Observatory, we performed a line survey in these PNe over the entire spectral range between 51 mu m and 672 mu m to look for new detections. Results. The rotational emission lines of OH+ at 152.99, 290.20, 308.48, and 329.77 mu m were detected in the spectra of three planetary nebulae: NGC 6445, NGC6720, and NGC 6781. Excitation temperatures and column densities derived from these lines are in the range of 27-47 K and 2 x 10(10)-4 x 10(11) cm(-2), respectively. Conclusions. In PNe, the OH+ rotational line emission appears to be produced in the photodissociation region (PDR) in these objects. The emission of OH+ is observed only in PNe with hot central stars (T-eff > 100 000 K), suggesting that high-energy photons may play a role in OH+ formation and its line excitation in these objects, as seems to be the case for ultraluminous galaxies.

  • JWST observations of the Ring Nebula (NGC 6720): I. Imaging of the rings, globules, and arcs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 528:2, s. 3392-3416
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present JWST images of the well-known planetary nebula NGC 6720 (the Ring Nebula), covering wavelengths from 1.6 to 25 m. The bright shell is strongly fragmented with some 20 000 dense globules, bright in H2, with a characteristic diameter of 0.2 arcsec and density nH ∼105-106 cm-3. The shell contains a narrow ring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission. H2 is found throughout the shell and also in the halo. H2 in the halo may be located on the swept-up walls of a biconal polar flow. The central cavity is filled with high-ionization gas and shows two linear structures which we suggest are the edges of a biconal flow, seen in projection against the cavity. The central star is located 2 arcsec from the emission centroid of the cavity and shell. Linear features ('spikes') extend outward from the ring, pointing away from the central star. Hydrodynamical simulations reproduce the clumping and possibly the spikes. Around 10 low-contrast, regularly spaced concentric arc-like features are present; they suggest orbital modulation by a low-mass companion with a period of about 280 yr. A previously known much wider companion is located at a projected separation of about 15 000 au; we show that it is an M2-M4 dwarf. NGC 6720 is therefore a triple star system. These features, including the multiplicity, are similar to those seen in the Southern Ring Nebula (NGC 3132) and may be a common aspect of such nebulae.

  • Interdisciplinary analysis of HIV-specific CD8+ T cell responses against variant epitopes reveals restricted TCR promiscuity
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of immunology (Baltimore, Md. : 1950). - : The American Association of Immunologists. - 1550-6606 .- 0022-1767. ; 184:9, s. 5383-5391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • HIV-1–specific CTL responses play a key role in limiting viral replication. CTL responses are sensitive to viral escape mutations, which influence recognition of the virus. Although CTLs have been shown to recognize epitope variants, the extent of this cross-reactivity has not been quantitatively investigated in a genetically diverse cohort of HIV-1–infected patients. Using a novel bioinformatic binding prediction method, we aimed to explain the pattern of epitope-specific CTL responses based on the patients’ HLA genotype and autologous virus sequence quantitatively. Sequences covering predicted and tested HLA class I-restricted epitopes (peptides) within the HIV-Gag, Pol, and Nef regions were obtained from 26 study subjects resulting in 1492 patient-specific peptide pairs. Epitopes that were recognized in ELISPOT assays were found to be significantly more similar to the autologous virus than those that did not elicit a response. A single substitution in the presented epitope decreased the chance of a CTL response by 40%. The impact of sequence similarity on cross-recognition was confirmed by testing immune responses against multiple variants of six selected epitopes. Substitutions at central positions in the epitope were particularly likely to result in abrogation of recognition. In summary, the presented data demonstrate a highly restricted promiscuity of HIV-1–specific CTL in the recognition of variant epitopes. In addition, our results illustrate that bioinformatic prediction methods are useful to study the complex pattern of CTL responses exhibited by an HIV-1–infected patient cohort and for identification of optimal targets for novel therapeutic or vaccine approaches.

  • CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE COLD DEBRIS OF SUPERNOVA 1987A
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ASTROPHYS J LETT. - 2041-8205. ; 773:2, s. L34-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report spectroscopic and imaging observations of rotational transitions of cold CO and SiO in the ejecta of SN1987A, the first such emission detected in a supernova remnant. In addition to line luminosities for the CO J = 1-0, 2-1, 6-5, and 7-6 transitions, we present upper limits for all other transitions up to J = 13-12, collectively measured from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment, and the Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver. Simple models show the lines are emitted from at least 0.01 M-circle dot of CO at a temperature >14 K, confined within at most 35% of a spherical volume expanding at similar to 2000 km s(-1). Moreover, we locate the emission within 1 '' of the central debris. These observations, along with a partial observation of SiO, confirm the presence of cold molecular gas within supernova remnants and provide insight into the physical conditions and chemical processes in the ejecta. Furthermore, we demonstrate the powerful new window into supernova ejecta offered by submillimeter observations.

  • Herschel and ALMA measurements of dust and molecules in supernova 1987A
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039. ; Part F113823
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dust production by supernovae is important in the dust life cycle of a galaxy. The explosion of SN 1987A was the nearest SN detected in the last 400 years, allowing us detailed studies of contemporary evolution of a supernova for the first time. In 2011, Matsuura et al. reported 0.4-0.7 M of dust in SN 1987A based on Herschel HERITAGE survey data, which is surprisingly large compared to prior measurements of supernovae. In this paper, we present our follow-up studies of this important discovery about SN 1987A using the Herschel Space Observatory and the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We highlight two important results, the detection of cold molecular gas and dust in the ejected material of SN 1987A. Our results suggest that SNe are significant producers of dust and molecules, as well as heavy elements, driving chemical evolution of galaxies.

  • Clinical Outcomes of Soft Tissue Preservation Surgery With Hydroxyapatite-Coated Abutments Compared to Traditional Percutaneous Bone Conduction Hearing Implant Surgery-A Pragmatic Multi-Center Randomized Controlled Trial
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Surgery. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-875X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Soft tissue preservation using a hydroxyapatite-coated abutment in bone conduction hearing implant surgery may lead to improved clinical outcomes over the short (1 year) and long term (3 years). Methods: In this open multi-center, randomized (1:1), controlled clinical trial, subjects with conductive, mixed hearing loss or single-sided sensorineural deafness were randomly assigned to receive the conventional intervention, a titanium abutment with soft tissue reduction surgery (control), or a new intervention, a hydroxyapatite-coated abutment with soft tissue preservation surgery (test). The primary efficacy outcome was the combined endpoint of numbness, pain, peri-abutment dermatitis, and soft tissue thickening/overgrowth after 1 and 3 years. Results: The Intention-to-treat (ITT) population consisted of 52 control subjects and 51 test subjects. The difference between the groups after 1 year of follow-up as measured by the primary efficacy outcome was not statistically significant (p = 0.12) in the ITT population (n = 103), but did reach statistical significance (p = 0.03) in the per-protocol (PP) population (n = 96). It showed an advantage for the test group, with over twice as many subjects (29%) without these medical events during the first year compared to the control group (13%). After 3 years, the difference between the two groups had declined and did not reach statistical significance (24 vs. 10%, ITT p = 0.45). Secondary outcome measures which showed a statistical significant difference during the first year, such as surgical time (15 vs. 25 minutes, p < 0.0001), numbness (90 vs. 69% of subjects experienced no numbness at 1 year, p < 0.01), neuropathic pain at 3 months (p = 0.0087) and the overall opinion of the esthetic outcome (observer POSAS scale at 3 months, p < 0.01) were favorable for the test group. More soft tissue thickening/overgrowth was observed at 3 weeks for the test group (p = 0.016). Similar results were achieved for the long term follow up. Conclusions: Soft tissue preservation with a hydroxyapatite-coated abutment leads to a reduction in the combined occurrence of complications over the first year which is not statistically significant in the ITT population but is in the PP population. This effect decreased for the long-term study follow up of 3 years and did also not reach statistical significance.
