  • Long-range mutual synchronization of spin Hall nano-oscillators
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1745-2473 .- 1745-2481. ; 13, s. 292-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spin Hall effect in a non-magnetic metal with spin–orbit coupling injects transverse spin currents into adjacent magnetic layers, where the resulting spin transfer torque can drive spin wave auto-oscillations. Such spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) hold great promise as extremely compact and broadband microwave signal generators and magnonic spin wave injectors. Here we show that SHNOs can also be mutually synchronized with unprecedented efficiency. We demonstrate mutual synchronization of up to nine individual SHNOs, each separated by 300nm. Through further tailoring of the connection regions we can extend the synchronization range to 4μm. The mutual synchronization is observed electrically as an increase in the power and coherence of the microwave signal, and confirmed optically using micro-Brillouin light scattering microscopy as two spin wave regions sharing the same spectral content, in agreement with our micromagnetic simulations.

  • Comprehensive and Macrospin-Based Magnetic Tunnel Junction Spin Torque Oscillator Model-Part I : Analytical Model of the MTJ STO
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. - 0018-9383 .- 1557-9646. ; 62:3, s. 1037-1044
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) spin torque oscillators (STOs) have shown the potential to be used in a wide range of microwave and sensing applications. To evaluate the potential uses of MTJ STO technology in various applications, an analytical model that can capture MTJ STO's characteristics, while enabling system-and circuit-level designs, is of great importance. An analytical model based on macrospin approximation is necessary for these designs since it allows implementation in hardware description languages. This paper presents a new macrospin-based, comprehensive, and compact MTJ STO model, which can be used for various MTJ STOs to estimate the performance of MTJ STOs together with their application-specific integrated circuits. To adequately present the complete model, this paper is divided into two parts. In Part I, the analytical model is introduced and verified by comparing it against measured data of three different MTJ STOs, varying the angle and magnitude of the magnetic field, as well as the DC biasing current. The proposed analytical model is suitable for being implemented in Verilog-A and used for efficient simulations at device, circuit, and system levels. In Part II, the full Verilog-A implementation of the analytical model with accurate phase noise generation is presented and verified by simulations.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. - 0018-9383 .- 1557-9646. ; 62:3, s. 1045-1051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rapid development of the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) spin torque oscillator (STO) technology demands an analytical model to enable building MTJ STO-based circuits and systems so as to evaluate and utilize MTJ STOs in various applications. In Part I of this paper, an analytical model based on the macrospin approximation has been introduced and verified by comparing it with the measurements of three different MTJ STOs. In Part II, the full Verilog-A implementation of the proposed model is presented. To achieve a reliable model, an approach to reproducing the phase noise generated by the MTJ STO has been proposed and successfully employed. The implemented model yields a time domain signal, which retains the characteristics of operating frequency, linewidth, oscillation amplitude, and DC operating point, with respect to the magnetic field and applied DC current. The Verilog-A implementation is verified against the analytical model, providing equivalent device characteristics for the full range of biasing conditions. Furthermore, a system that includes an MTJ STO and CMOS RF circuits is simulated to validate the proposed model for system-and circuit-level designs. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model opens the possibility to explore STO technology in a wide range of applications.

  • Effect of canted magnetic field on magnetic droplet nucleation boundaries
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The influence on magnetic droplet nucleation boundaries by canted magnetic elds are investigated and reported. The nucleation boundary condition, In = αAH + BH + C, is determined at different canted angles (0°< θH<20°) using magnetoresistance (MR) and microwave measurements in nanocontact spintorque oscillators (NC-STOs). As θH increased, the nucleation boundary shifts gradually towards higher In and H. The coefficient B of the nucleation boundary equation also nearly doubled as θH increases. On theother hand, the coefficient αA remained constant for all values of θH. These observations can be explained by considering the drift instability of magnetic droplets and the different tilt behaviour of the Co fixed layer induced by different θH.

  • Magnetic droplet nucleation boundary in orthogonal spin-torque nano-oscillators
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Static and dynamic magnetic solitons play a critical role in applied nanomagnetism. Magnetic droplets, a type of non-topological dissipative soliton, can be nucleated and sustained in nanocontact spin-torque oscillators with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy free layers. Here, we perform a detailed experimental determination of the full droplet nucleation boundary in the current–field plane for a wide range of nanocontact sizes and demonstrate its excellent agreement with an analytical expression originating from a stability analysis. Our results reconcile recent contradicting reports of the field dependence of the droplet nucleation. Furthermore, our analytical model both highlights the relation between the fixed layer material and the droplet nucleation current magnitude, and provides an accurate method to experimentally determine the spin transfer torque asymmetry of each device.

  • Spin transfer torque generated magnetic droplet solitons (invited)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 115:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present recent experimental and numerical advancements in the understanding of spin transfer torque generated magnetic droplet solitons. The experimental work focuses on nano-contact spin torque oscillators (NC-STOs) based on orthogonal (pseudo) spin valves where the Co fixed layer has an easy-plane anisotropy, and the [Co/Ni] free layer has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The NC-STO resistance and microwave signal generation are measured simultaneously as a function of drive current and applied perpendicular magnetic field. Both exhibit dramatic transitions at a certain current dependent critical field value, where the microwave frequency drops 10 GHz, modulation sidebands appear, and the resistance exhibits a jump, while the magnetoresistance changes sign. We interpret these observations as the nucleation of a magnetic droplet soliton with a large fraction of its magnetization processing with an angle greater than 90 degrees, i.e., around a direction opposite that of the applied field. This interpretation is corroborated by numerical simulations. When the field is further increased, we find that the droplet eventually collapses under the pressure from the Zeeman energy. • 2014
  • Ingår i: Ieee Transactions on Magnetics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9464 .- 1941-0069. ; 50:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a comprehensive review of the most recent advances in nanocontact spin torque oscillators (NC-STOs). NC-STOs are highly tunable, with both applied magnetic field and dc, broadband microwave signal generators. As opposed to the nanopillar geometry, where the lateral cross section of the entire device has been confined to a typically <100 nm diameter, in NC-STOs, it is only the current injection site that has been laterally confined on top of an extended magnetic film stack. Three distinct material combinations will be discussed: 1) a Co/Cu/NiFe pseudospin valve (PSV) where both the Co and NiFe have a dominant in-plane anisotropy; 2) a Co/Cu/[Co/Ni](4) orthogonal PSV where the Co/Ni multilayer has a strong perpendicular anisotropy; and 3) a single NiFe layer with asymmetric non-magnetic Cu leads. We explore the rich and diverse magnetodynamic modes that can be generated in these three distinct sample geometries.

  • Spin-Wave-Mode Coexistence on the Nanoscale : A Consequence of the Oersted-Field-Induced Asymmetric Energy Landscape
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 110:25, s. 257202-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been argued that if multiple spin wave modes are competing for the same centrally located energy source, as in a nanocontact spin torque oscillator, that only one mode should survive in the steady state. Here, the experimental conditions necessary for mode coexistence are explored. Mode coexistence is facilitated by the local field asymmetries induced by the spatially inhomogeneous Oersted field, which leads to a physical separation of the modes, and is further promoted by spin wave localization at reduced applied field angles. Finally, both simulation and experiment reveal a low frequency signal consistent with the intermodulation of two coexistent modes.

    • Modulation of an oscillator is crucial for its application in communication devices. While the output power and linewidth of single magnetic tunnel junction-based spin-torque oscillators (MTJ-STO) are not yet adequate for practical uses, the synchronization of such devices can overcome these limitations. Here, we investigate the modulation behavior of a parametrically synchronized MTJ-STO and show experimentally that modulation of the synchronized state preserves synchronization as long as the modulation frequency, integral(mod), is above a characteristic frequency, integral(unlock). The unlocking frequency increases with the modulation amplitude in agreement with analytical estimates and numerical simulations. These phenomena are described as a non-resonant unlocking mechanism, whose characteristics are directly related to inherent parameters of the oscillator. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

    • Using microwave current injection at room temperature, we demonstrate parametric excitation of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ)-based spin-torque oscillator (STO). Parametric excitation is observed for currents below the auto-oscillation threshold, when the microwave current frequency f(e) is twice the STO free-running frequency f(0). Above threshold, the MTJ becomes parametrically synchronized. In the synchronized state, the STO exhibits an integrated power up to 5 times higher and a linewidth reduction of two orders of magnitude, compared to free-running conditions. We also show that the parametric synchronization favors single mode oscillations in the case of multimode excitation. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 104:9, s. 092405-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nano-scale spin torque oscillator (STO) is a compelling device for on-chip, highly tunable microwave frequency signal generation. Currently, one of the most important challenges for the STO is to increase its longer-time frequency stability by decreasing the 1/f frequency noise, but its high level makes even its measurement impossible using the phase noise mode of spectrum analyzers. Here, we present a custom made time-domain measurement system with 150MHz measurement bandwidth making possible the investigation of the variation of the 1/f as well as the white frequency noise in a STO over a large set of operating points covering 18-25GHz. The 1/f level is found to be highly dependent on the oscillation amplitude-frequency non-linearity and the vicinity of unexcited oscillation modes. These findings elucidate the need for a quantitative theoretical treatment of the low-frequency, colored frequency noise in STOs. Based on the results, we suggest that the 1/f frequency noise possibly can be decreased by improving the microstructural quality of the metallic thin films.

  • Homodyne-detected ferromagnetic resonance of in-plane magnetized nanocontacts : Composite spin-wave resonances and their excitation mechanism
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW B. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work provides a detailed investigation of the measured in-plane field-swept homodyne-detected ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of an extended Co/Cu/NiFe pseudo-spin-valve stack using a nanocontact (NC) geometry. The magnetodynamics are generated by a pulse-modulated microwave current, and the resulting rectified dc mixing voltage, which appears across the NC at resonance, is detected using a lock-in amplifier. Most notably, we find that the measured spectra of the NiFe layer are composite in nature and highly asymmetric, consistent with the broadband excitation of multiple modes. Additionally, the data must be fit with two Lorentzian functions in order to extract a reasonable value for the Gilbert damping of the NiFe. Aided by micromagnetic simulations, we conclude that (i) for in-plane fields the rf Oersted field in the vicinity of the NC plays the dominant role in generating the observed spectra, (ii) in addition to the FMR mode, exchange-dominated spin waves are also generated, and (iii) the NC diameter sets the mean wave vector of the exchange-dominated spin wave, in good agreement with the dispersion relation.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spin torque oscillators (STOs) often exhibit multiple modes, leading to complex behavior. One example is mode hopping between different eigenmodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) STO. This mode hopping is a strong function of current and angle between the magnetization in the free and fixed layers, and away from anti-parallel configuration, mode hopping can be the dominant decoherence process. Another example is the linewidth of a nanocontact STO that can be a complex non-monotonic function of temperature in regions where two or more modes are excited by the oscillators. These phenomena require a generalization of the single-mode nonlinear STO theory to include mode coupling. We derive equations describing the slow time evolution of the coupled system and show they describe a dynamically driven system, similar to other systems that exhibit mode hopping in the presence of thermal fluctuations. In our description, mode coupling also leads to additional coupling between power and phase fluctuations, which can in certain limited cases lead to longer relaxation times for power fluctuations, and consequently to larger linewidths through the nonlinear frequency shift.

  • Effect of Excitation Fatigue on the Synchronization of Multiple Nanocontact Spin-Torque Oscillators
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Ieee Magnetics Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1949-307X .- 1949-3088. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanocontact spin-torque oscillators (NC-STOs) act as intrinsically nanoscale and highly current and magnetic field tunable, ultrawide band microwave signal generators. However, their low output power and high phase noise remain critical obstacles toward actual applications. Mutual synchronization of multiple NCs is one possibility to overcome these shortcomings. This letter presents a detailed study of the mutual synchronization in a NC-STO with two NCs. In particular, the effect of repeated measurements on the synchronization behavior is explored. Repeated measurements at high drive currents are shown to significantly degrade the performance of the devices with the most striking consequence being that the devices can no longer be synchronized. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements reveal a decrease in the saturation magnetization and an increase in the damping coefficient in annealed NiFe films, consistent with Cu diffusion into the NiFe from the adjacent Cu layers. This increase in damping will act to sever the spin wave-mediated communication channel between the NCs necessary for synchronization. These results highlight an important consideration when studying the synchronization behavior of multi-NC devices where Joule heating is expected to scale unfavorably with the number of NCs.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Nanotechnology. - 1748-3387 .- 1748-3395. ; 11, s. 280-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synchronization of multiple nanocontact spin-torque oscillators (NC-STOs) is mediated by propagating spin waves (SWs). Although it has been shown that the Oersted field generated in the vicinity of the NC can dramatically alter the emission pattern of SWs, its role in the synchronization behaviour of multiple NCs has not been considered so far. Here we investigate the synchronization behaviour in multiple NC-STOs oriented either vertically or horizontally, with respect to the in-plane component of the external field. Synchronization is promoted (impeded) by the Oersted field landscape when the NCs are oriented vertically (horizontally) due to the highly anisotropic SW propagation. Not only is robust synchronization between two oscillators observed for separations larger than 1,000nm, but synchronization of up to five oscillators, a new record, has been observed in the vertical array geometry. Furthermore, the synchronization can no longer be considered mutual in nature.

    • Modulation of spin torque oscillators (STOs) is investigated by analytically solving the time-dependent coupled equations of an auto-oscillator. A Fourier-series solution is proposed, leading to the coefficients being determined with a linear set of equations, from which a nonlinear amplitude and frequency modulation (NFAM) scheme is obtained. In this framework, the NFAM features are related to the intrinsic STO parameters, revealing a frequency dependence of the harmonic-dependent modulation index that allows a modulation bandwidth to be defined for these devices. The presented results expose a rich parameter space, where the modulation and the STO's operation conditions define the observed modulation features. The Fourier-series representation of the time signal is suitable for studying periodic perturbations on the auto-oscillator equation.

    • Microwave magnetodynamics in ferromagnets are often studied in the small-amplitude or weakly nonlinear regime corresponding to modulations of a well-defined magnetic state. However, strongly nonlinear regimes, where the aforementioned approximations are not applicable, have become experimentally accessible. By reinterpreting the governing Landau-Lifshitz equation of motion, we derive an exact set of equations of dispersive hydrodynamic form that are amenable to analytical study even when full nonlinearity and exchange dispersion are included. The resulting equations are shown to, in general, break Galilean invariance. A magnetic Mach number is obtained as a function of static and moving reference frames. The simplest class of solutions are termed uniform hydrodynamic states (UHSs), which exhibit fluidlike behavior including laminar flow at subsonic speeds and the formation of a Mach cone and wave fronts at supersonic speeds. A regime of modulational instability is also possible, where the UHS is violently unstable. The hydrodynamic interpretation opens up novel possibilities in magnetic research.

    • Magnetic dissipative droplets are localized, strongly nonlinear dynamical modes excited in nanocontact spin valves with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. These modes find potential application in nanoscale structures for magnetic storage and computation, but dissipative droplet studies have so far been limited to extended thin films. Here, numerical and asymptotic analyses are used to demonstrate the existence and properties of novel solitons in confined structures. As a nanowire's width is decreased with a nanocontact of fixed size at its center, the observed modes undergo transitions from a fully localized two-dimensional droplet into a two-dimensional droplet edge mode and then a pulsating one-dimensional droplet. These solitons are interpreted as dissipative versions of classical, conservative solitons, allowing for an analytical description of the modes and the mechanisms of bifurcation. The presented results open up new possibilities for the study of low-dimensional solitons and droplet applications in nanostructures.

    • The transient dynamics of phase-locking in serially connected nanopillar spin-torque oscillators (STOs) is studied both analytically and numerically. A variety of transient behaviors are observed stemming from the high oscillator nonlinearity and the interplay between the damping to coupling strength ratio and the phase delay of the coupling. Non-Adlerian (ringing) dynamics is found to be the main regime of synchronization where the synchronization time depends strongly on the phase delay. Somewhat nonintuitively, sufficiently strong coupling can also destabilize the system, destroying the synchronized regime even for identical STOs. This transient behavior is also found to dominate when the STOs have different frequencies. These results highlight fundamental issues that must be considered in the design of serially synchronized STOs.

    • Experiments on spin torque oscillators commonly observe multimode signals. Recent theoretical works have ascribed the multimode signal generation to coupling between energy-separated spin wave modes. Here, we analyze in detail the dynamics generated by such mode coupling. We show analytically that the mode-hopping dynamics broaden the generation linewidth and makes it generally well described by a Voigt line shape. Furthermore, we show that the mode-hopping contribution to the linewidth can dominate, in which case it provides a direct measure of the mode-hopping rate. Due to the thermal drive of mode-hopping events, the mode-hopping rate also provides information on the energy barrier separating modes and temperature-dependent linewidth broadening. Our results are in good agreement with experiments, revealing the physical mechanism behind the linewidth broadening in multimode spin torque oscillators.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spin-torque oscillators (STOs) are devices that allow for the excitation of a variety of magnetodynamical modes at the nanoscale. Depending on both external conditions and intrinsic magnetic properties, STOs can exhibit regimes of mode hopping and even mode coexistence. Whereas mode hopping has been extensively studied in STOs patterned as nanopillars, coexistence has been only recently observed for localized modes in nanocontact STOs (NC-STOs), where the current is confined to flow through a NC fabricated on an extended pseudo spin valve. By means of electrical characterization and a multimode STO theory, we investigate the physical origin of the mode-couplingmechanisms favoring coexistence. Two couplingmechanisms are identified: (i) magnon-mediated scattering and (ii) intermode interactions. These mechanisms can be physically disentangled by fabricating devices where the NCs have an elliptical cross section. The generation power and linewidth from such devices are found to be in good qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions, as well as provide evidence of the dominant mode-coupling mechanisms.

    • Artificial square ices are structures composed of magnetic nanoelements arranged on the sites of a two-dimensional square lattice, such that there are four interacting magnetic elements at each vertex, leading to geometrical frustration. Using a semianalytical approach, we show that square ices exhibit a rich spin-wave band structure that is tunable both by external magnetic fields and the magnetization configuration of individual elements. Internal degrees of freedom can give rise to equilibrium states with bent magnetization at the element edges leading to characteristic excitations; in the presence of magnetostatic interactions these form separate bands analogous to impurity bands in semiconductors. Full-scale micromagnetic simulations corroborate our semianalytical approach. Our results show that artificial square ices can be viewed as reconfigurable and tunable magnonic crystals that can be used as metamaterials for spin-wave-based applications at the nanoscale.

    • Theory predicts that a strongly injection-locked spin-torque oscillator (STO) should show a characteristic ringing frequency both on its approach to the locked state and under the influence of thermal noise. While experiments have so far failed to detect such ringing, we here show numerically and analytically how current modulation of injection-locked STOs can excite the ringing frequency in a resonant manner, and hence increase the experimental sensitivity. The complexity of such dynamics leads to a nonlinear resonance, which can even unlock the STO as a function of the modulation strength. The results presented here offer a plausible method for experimentally measuring the ringing frequency of STOs. Moreover, the onset of unlocking also provides a measure for the maximum modulation strength that can be applied to phase-locked STOs.

    • Sub-picosecond magnetisation manipulation via femtosecond optical pumping has attracted wide attention ever since its original discovery in 1996. However, the spatial evolution of the magnetisation is not yet well understood, in part due to the difficulty in experimentally probing such rapid dynamics. Here, we find evidence of a universal rapid magnetic order recovery in ferrimagnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy via nonlinear magnon processes. We identify magnon localisation and coalescence processes, whereby localised magnetic textures nucleate and subsequently interact and grow in accordance with a power law formalism. A hydrodynamic representation of the numerical simulations indicates that the appearance of noncollinear magnetisation via optical pumping establishes exchange-mediated spin currents with an equivalent 100% spin polarised charge current density of 10 7 A cm −2 . Such large spin currents precipitate rapid recovery of magnetic order after optical pumping. The magnon processes discussed here provide new insights for the stabilization of desired meta-stable states.

  • Strongly non-linear magnetization dynamics in nano-structures: perturbations, multi-mode generation, and topological droplets
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Spin torque oscillators (STOs) are magnetic nano-devices in which strongly non-linear magnetodynamic phenomena can be excited by current. In this thesis, we study some of these phenomena by means of micromagnetic simulations, analytical calculations, and electrical characterization. Three main subjects are discussed: 1. External perturbations, which can induce synchronization and modulation. In the former case, STOs are shown to exhibit an under-damped or non-Adlerian behavior, defining a minimum synchronization time. For the latter, slow external sources can induce the so-called Nonlinear Amplitude and Frequency Modulation, from which the modulation bandwidth is defined. Both perturbations can be combined for the technologically relevant case of synchronized and modulated STOs. It is shown that regimes of resonant and non-resonant unlocking exist. 2. Multi-mode generation of STOs is described by a novel analytical framework. In particular, the generation linewidth is calculated, and it is shown to be intrinsically related to the coupling between multiple modes. Mode coexistence is found to be analytically possible and, further, observed experimentally and numerically. Electrical characterization of in-house fabricated devices confirms the analytical predictions and suggests the possibility of fine-tuning and controlling spin wave propagation at the nanoscale. 3. Topological droplets are numerically shown to exist when the STOs are patterned into nanowires. The following droplet modes have been found: a non-topological edge mode that is attracted by the physical boundaries and increases its footprint to satisfy the damping / spin torque balance, and a topological (chiral) quasi-one-dimensional droplet that can be considered as the dynamical counterpart of breathing soliton-soliton pairs.

    • Planar ferromagnetic channels have been shown to theoretically support a long-range ordered and coherently precessing state where the balance between local spin injection at one edge and damping along the channel establishes a dissipative exchange flow, sometimes referred to as a spin superfluid. However, realistic materials exhibit in-plane anisotropy, which breaks the axial symmetry assumed in current theoretical models. Here, we study dissipative exchange flows in a ferromagnet with in-plane anisotropy from a dispersive hydrodynamic perspective. Through the analysis of a boundary value problem for a damped sine-Gordon equation, dissipative exchange flows in a ferromagnetic channel can be excited above a spin current threshold that depends on material parameters and the length of the channel. Symmetry-broken dissipative exchange flows display harmonic overtones that redshift the fundamental precessional frequency and lead to a reduced spin pumping efficiency when compared to their symmetric counterpart. Micromagnetic simulations are used to verify that the analytical results are qualitatively accurate, even in the presence of nonlocal dipole fields. Simulations also confirm that dissipative exchange flows can be driven by spin transfer torque in a finite-sized region. These results delineate the important material parameters that must be optimized for the excitation of dissipative exchange flows in realistic systems.

    • Systems that exhibit topologically protected edge states are interesting both from a fundamental point of view as well as for potential applications, the latter because of the absence of backscattering and robustness to perturbations. It is desirable to be able to control and manipulate such edge states. Here, we show that artificial square ices can incorporate both features: an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction gives rise to topologically nontrivial magnon bands, and the equilibrium state of the spin ice is reconfigurable with different configurations having different magnon dispersions and topology. The topology is found to develop as odd-symmetry bulk and edge magnon bands approach each other so that constructive band inversion occurs in reciprocal space. Our results show that topologically protected bands are supported in square spin ices.

    • Magnetization dynamics in thin film ferromagnets can be studied using a dispersive hydrodynamic formulation. The equations describing the magnetodynamics map to a compressible fluid with broken Galilean invariance parametrized by the longitudinal spin density and a magnetic analog of the fluid velocity that define spindensity waves. A direct consequence of these equations is the determination of a magnetic Mach number. Micromagnetic simulations reveal nucleation of nonlinear structures from an impenetrable object realized by an applied magnetic field spot or a defect. In this work, micromagnetic simulations demonstrate vortex-antivortex pair nucleation from an obstacle. Their interaction establishes either ordered or irregular vortex-antivortex complexes. Furthermore, when the magnetic Mach number exceeds unity (supersonic flow), a Mach cone and periodic wavefronts are observed, which can be well-described by solutions of the steady, linearized equations. These results are reminiscent of theoretical and experimental observations in Bose-Einstein condensates, and further support the analogy between the magnetodynamics of a thin film ferromagnet and compressible fluids. The nucleation of nonlinear structures and vortex-antivortex complexes using this approach enables the study of their interactions and effects on the stability of spin-density waves.

    • Magnetization dynamics in an artificial square spin-ice lattice made of Ni80Fe20 with magnetic field applied in the lattice plane is investigated by broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The experimentally observed dispersion shows a rich spectrum of modes corresponding to different magnetization states. These magnetization states are determined by exchange and dipolar interaction between individual islands, as is confirmed by a semianalytical model. In the low field regime below 400 Oe a hysteretic behavior in the mode spectrum is found. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that the origin of the observed spectra is due to the initialization of different magnetization states of individual nanomagnets. Our results indicate that it might be possible to determine the spin-ice state by resonance experiments and are a first step towards the understanding of artificial geometrically frustrated magnetic systems in the high-frequency regime.

    • Nanocontact spin-torque oscillators are devices in which the generation of propagating spin waves can be sustained by spin transfer torque. In the present paper, we perform combined electrical and optical measurements in a single experimental setup to systematically investigate the excitation of spin waves by a nanocontact spin-torque oscillator and their propagation in a Ni80Fe20 extended layer. By using microfocused Brillouin light scattering we observe an anisotropic emission of spin waves, due to the broken symmetry imposed by the inhomogeneous Oersted field generated by the injected current. In particular, spin waves propagate on the side of the nanocontact where the Oersted field and the in-plane component of the applied magnetic field are antiparallel, while propagation is inhibited on the opposite side. Moreover, propagating spin waves are efficiently excited only in a limited frequency range corresponding to wavevectors inversely proportional to the size of the nanocontact. This frequency range obeys the dispersion relation for exchange-dominated spin waves in the far field, as confirmed by micromagnetic simulations of similar devices. The present results have direct consequences for spin wave based applications, such as synchronization, computation, and magnonics.

    • We study microwave signal generation as a function of drive current and applied perpendicular magnetic field in nano-contact spin torque oscillators (NC-STOs) based on orthogonal (pseudo) spin valves where the Co fixed layer has strong easy-plane anisotropy, and the [Co/Ni] free layer has a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The orthogonal NC-STOs exhibit a dramatic transition from the conventional ferromagnetic resonance-like spin wave mode to a magnetic droplet soliton mode. In particular, the field and current dependence of the droplet soliton near threshold are discussed. Near threshold the droplet soliton undergoes complex dynamics that include mode hopping, as evident in the experimental frequency domain and magnetoresistance response. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

    • Dissipative solitons have been reported in a wide range of nonlinear systems, but the observation of their magnetic analog has been experimentally challenging. Using spin transfer torque underneath a nanocontact on a magnetic thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), we have observed the generation of dissipative magnetic droplet solitons and report on their rich dynamical properties. Micromagnetic simulations identify a wide range of automodulation frequencies, including droplet oscillatory motion, droplet "spinning," and droplet "breather" states. The droplet can be controlled by using both current and magnetic fields and is expected to have applications in spintronics, magnonics, and PMA-based domain-wall devices.

    • The current controlled modulation of nanocontact based spin torque oscillator (STO) pairs is studied in both the synchronized and nonsynchronized states. The synchronized state shows a well behaved modulation and demonstrates robust mutual locking even under strong modulation. The power distribution of the modulation sidebands can be quantitatively described by assuming a single oscillator model. However, in the nonsynchronized state, the modulation sidebands are not well described by the model, indicating interactions between the two individual nanocontact STOs. These findings are promising for potential applications requiring the modulation of large synchronized STO arrays.

    • We demonstrate magnetization auto-oscillations driven by pure spin currents in spin Hall nano-oscillators based on CoFeB/Pt bilayers. Despite the very low anisotropic magnetoresistance of CoFeB, a substantial microwave signal power can be detected, even at room temperature, indicating that a sizable spin wave amplitude is generated. Spin torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements reveal that the generated auto-oscillation frequency lies below the ferromagnetic resonance frequency of CoFeB and is therefore well described by a self-localized spin wave bullet mode.

    • Stripe domains are narrow, elongated, reversed regions that exist in magnetic materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. They appear as a pair of domain walls that can exhibit topology with a nonzero chirality. Recent experimental and numerical investigations identify an instability of stripe domains along the long direction as a means of nucleating isolated magnetic skyrmions. Here, the onset and nonlinear evolution of transverse instabilities for a dynamic stripe domain known as the bion stripe are investigated. Both nontopological and topological variants of the bion stripe are shown to exhibit a long-wavelength transverse instability with different characteristic features. In the former, small transverse variations in the stripe's width lead to a neck instability that eventually pinches the nontopological stripe into a chain of two-dimensional breathers composed of droplet soliton pairs. In the latter case, small variations in the stripe's center result in a snake instability whose topological structure leads to the nucleation of dynamic magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions as well as perimeter-modulated droplets. Quantitative, analytical predictions for both the early, linear evolution and the long-time, nonlinear evolution are achieved using an averaged Lagrangian approach that incorporates both exchange (dispersion) and anisotropy (nonlinearity). The method of analysis is general and can be applied to other filamentary structures.

    • An important property of spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) is their ability to produce a frequency modulated (FM) signal, which is very critical for communication applications. We here demonstrate a novel single sideband (SSB) modulation phenomenon using a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ)-based STNO, which saves transmission bandwidth and in principle should minimize attenuation for wireless communication. Experimentally, lower single sidebands (LSSBs) have been successfully demonstrated over a wide range of modulation frequency, f m = 150 MHz-1 GHz. The observed LSSBs are determined by the intrinsic properties of the device, which can be modeled well by a nonlinear frequency and amplitude modulation formulation and reproduced in macrospin simulations. Moreover, our macrospin simulation results show that the range of modulation current and modulation frequency for generating SSBs can be controlled by the field-like torque and biasing conditions. © 2017 The Author(s).

    • The frequency noise spectrum of a magnetic tunnel junction based spin torque oscillator is examined where multiple modes and mode-hopping events are observed. The frequency noise spectrum is found to consist of both white noise and 1/f frequency noise. We find a systematic and similar dependence of both white noise and 1/f frequency noise on bias current and the relative angle between the reference and free layers, which changes the effective damping and hence the mode-hopping behavior in this system. The frequency at which the 1/f frequency noise changes to white noise increases as the free layer is aligned away from the anti-parallel orientation w.r.t the reference layer. These results indicate that the origin of 1/f frequency noise is related to mode-hopping, which produces both white noise as well as 1/f frequency noise similar to the case of ring lasers.

    • The magnetic dissipative droplet is a strongly nonlinear wave structure that can be stabilized in a thin film ferromagnet exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by use of spin transfer torque. These structures have been observed experimentally at room temperature, showcasing their robustness against noise. Here, we quantify the effects of thermal noise by deriving stochastic equations of motion for a droplet based on soliton perturbation theory. First, it is found that deterministic droplets are linearly unstable at large bias currents, subject to a drift instability. When the droplet is linearly stable, our framework allows us to analytically compute the droplet's generation linewidth and center variance. Additionally, we study the influence of nonlocal and Oersted fields with micromagnetic simulations, providing insight into their effect on the generation linewidth. These results motivate detailed experiments on the current and temperature-dependent linewidth as well as drift instability statistics of droplets, which are important figures-of-merit in the prospect of droplet-based applications.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent experiments on spin-torque oscillators have revealed interactions between multiple magneto-dynamic modes, including mode coexistence, mode hopping, and temperature-driven crossover between modes. The initial multimode theory indicates that a linear coupling between several dominant modes, arising from the interaction of the subdynamic system with a magnon bath, plays an essential role in the generation of various multimode behaviors, such as mode hopping and mode coexistence. In this work, we derive a set of rate equations to describe the dynamics of coupled magneto-dynamic modes in a nanocontact spin-torque oscillator. Expressions for both linear and nonlinear coupling terms are obtained, which allow us to analyze the dependence of the coupled dynamic behaviors of modes on external experimental conditions as well as intrinsic magnetic properties. For a minimal two-mode system, we further map the energy and phase difference of the two modes onto a two-dimensional phase space and demonstrate in the phase portraits how the manifolds of periodic orbits and fixed points vary with an external magnetic field as well as with the temperature.

    • Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin textures that manifest themselves as quasiparticles in ferromagnetic thin films or noncentrosymmetric bulk materials. So far attention has focused on skyrmions stabilized either by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) or by dipolar interaction, where in the latter case the excitations are known as bubble skyrmions. Here we demonstrate the existence of a dynamically stabilized skyrmion, which exists even when dipolar interactions and DMI are absent. We establish how such dynamic skyrmions can be nucleated, sustained and manipulated in an effectively lossless medium under a nanocontact. As quasiparticles, they can be transported between two nanocontacts in a nanowire, even in complete absence of DMI. Conversely, in the presence of DMI, we observe that the dynamical skyrmion experiences strong breathing. All of this points towards a wide range of skyrmion manipulation, which can be studied in a much wider class of materials than considered so far.
