  • Rarity of the Alzheimer Disease-Protective APP A673T Variant in the United States.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: JAMA neurology. - : American Medical Association (AMA). - 2168-6157 .- 2168-6149. ; 72:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, a rare variant in the amyloid precursor protein gene (APP) was described in a population from Iceland. This variant, in which alanine is replaced by threonine at position 673 (A673T), appears to protect against late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD). We evaluated the frequency of this variant in AD cases and cognitively normal controls to determine whether this variant will significantly contribute to risk assessment in individuals in the United States.

  • Gene-Wide Analysis Detects Two New Susceptibility Genes for Alzheimer's Disease
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 9:6, s. e94661-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Alzheimer's disease is a common debilitating dementia with known heritability, for which 20 late onset susceptibility loci have been identified, but more remain to be discovered. This study sought to identify new susceptibility genes, using an alternative gene-wide analytical approach which tests for patterns of association within genes, in the powerful genome-wide association dataset of the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project Consortium, comprising over 7 m genotypes from 25,580 Alzheimer's cases and 48,466 controls. Principal Findings: In addition to earlier reported genes, we detected genome-wide significant loci on chromosomes 8 (TP53INP1, p = 1.4x10(-6)) and 14 (IGHV1-67 p = 7.9x10(-8)) which indexed novel susceptibility loci. Significance: The additional genes identified in this study, have an array of functions previously implicated in Alzheimer's disease, including aspects of energy metabolism, protein degradation and the immune system and add further weight to these pathways as potential therapeutic targets in Alzheimer's disease.

  • Convergent genetic and expression data implicate immunity in Alzheimer's disease
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Alzheimer's & Dementia. - : Wiley. - 1552-5260 .- 1552-5279. ; 11:6, s. 658-671
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) is heritable with 20 genes showing genome-wide association in the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP). To identify the biology underlying the disease, we extended these genetic data in a pathway analysis. Methods: The ALIGATOR and GSEA algorithms were used in the IGAP data to identify associated functional pathways and correlated gene expression networks in human brain. Results: ALIGATOR identified an excess of curated biological pathways showing enrichment of association. Enriched areas of biology included the immune response (P = 3.27 X 10(-12) after multiple testing correction for pathways), regulation of endocytosis (P = 1.31 X 10(-11)), cholesterol transport (P = 2.96 X 10(-9)), and proteasome-ubiquitin activity (P = 1.34 X 10(-6)). Correlated gene expression analysis identified four significant network modules, all related to the immune response (corrected P = .002-.05). Conclusions: The immime response, regulation of endocytosis, cholesterol transport, and protein ubiquitination represent prime targets for AD therapeutics.

  • Environmental effects of ozone depletion and its interactions with climate change: progress report, 2015
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences. - 1474-905X .- 1474-9092. ; 15:2, s. 141-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP) is one of three Panels that regularly informs the Parties (countries) to the Montreal Protocol on the effects of ozone depletion and the consequences of climate change interactions with respect to human health, animals, plants, biogeochemistry, air quality, and materials. The Panels provide a detailed assessment report every four years. The most recent 2014 Quadrennial Assessment by the EEAP was published as a special issue of seven papers in 2015 (Photochem. Photobiol. Sci., 2015, 14, 1-184). The next Quadrennial Assessment will be published in 2018/2019. In the interim, the EEAP generally produces an annual update or progress report of the relevant scientific findings. The present progress report for 2015 assesses some of the highlights and new insights with regard to the interactive nature of the effects of UV radiation, atmospheric processes, and climate change.

  • Differential Genetic Associations for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Based on Anti-dsDNA Autoantibody Production
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: PLoS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 7:3, s. e1001323-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a clinically heterogeneous, systemic autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibody formation. Previously published genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have investigated SLE as a single phenotype. Therefore, we conducted a GWAS to identify genetic factors associated with anti-dsDNA autoantibody production, a SLE-related autoantibody with diagnostic and clinical importance. Using two independent datasets, over 400,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were studied in a total of 1,717 SLE cases and 4,813 healthy controls. Anti-dsDNA autoantibody positive (anti-dsDNA +, n = 811) and anti-dsDNA autoantibody negative (anti-dsDNA -, n = 906) SLE cases were compared to healthy controls and to each other to identify SNPs associated specifically with these SLE subtypes. SNPs in the previously identified SLE susceptibility loci STAT4, IRF5, ITGAM, and the major histocompatibility complex were strongly associated with anti-dsDNA + SLE. Far fewer and weaker associations were observed for anti-dsDNA - SLE. For example, rs7574865 in STAT4 had an OR for anti-dsDNA + SLE of 1.77 (95% CI 1.57-1.99, p = 2.0E-20) compared to an OR for anti-dsDNA - SLE of 1.26 (95% CI 1.12-1.41, p = 2.4E-04), with (Pheterogeneity)<0.0005. SNPs in the SLE susceptibility loci BANK1, KIAA1542, and UBE2L3 showed evidence of association with anti-dsDNA + SLE and were not associated with anti-dsDNA - SLE. In conclusion, we identified differential genetic associations with SLE based on anti-dsDNA autoantibody production. Many previously identified SLE susceptibility loci may confer disease risk through their role in autoantibody production and be more accurately described as autoantibody propensity loci. Lack of strong SNP associations may suggest that other types of genetic variation or non-genetic factors such as environmental exposures have a greater impact on susceptibility to anti-dsDNA - SLE.

  • Sexually dimorphic effect of the Val66Met polymorphism of BDNF on susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease : New data and meta-analysis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: American journal of medical genetics. Part B, Neuropsychiatric genetics. - : Wiley. - 1552-4841 .- 1552-485X. ; 153B:1, s. 235-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conflicting results have been reported as to whether genetic variations (Val66Met and C270T) of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene (BDNF) confer susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease (AD). We genotyped these polymorphisms in a Japanese sample of 657 patients with AD and 525 controls, and obtained weak evidence of association for Val66Met (P = 0.063), but not for C270T. After stratification by sex, we found a significant allelic association between Val66Met and AD in women (P = 0.017), but not in men. To confirm these observations, we collected genotyping data for each sex from 16 research centers worldwide (4,711 patients and 4,537 controls in total). The meta-analysis revealed that there was a clear sex difference in the allelic association; the Met66 allele confers susceptibility to AD in women (odds ratio = 1.14, 95% CI 1.05-1.24, P = 0.002), but not in men. Our results provide evidence that the Met66 allele of BDNF has a sexually dimorphic effect on susceptibility to AD.

  • Tuning of electrical conduction properties of natural fibers and TiO 2 based flexible paper composite sheets by electrodeposition of metallic nanolayers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ceramics International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0272-8842. ; 47:20, s. 29435-29442
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an era of modern smart technology, flexible electrodes are of great interest for different energy conversion as well as energy storage applications like solar cells, all solid-state batteries, and supercapacitors. Flexible metal oxide-based paper electrodes are advantageous in comparison to conventional electrodes due to their economical synthesis, biocompatibility, and environment-friendly characteristics. However, the electrical conductivity of paper electrodes is limited because of the insulating nature of natural fibers employed as a binder for the flexible matrix of metal oxides. The current study is an attempt to tune the electrical properties of lignocelluloses (natural fibers) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) based paper electrodes by facile electrodeposition technique. The crystalline parts (e.g., TiO2, Ag, and Au) of the prepared composite sheets were characterized by XRD analysis while the surface morphology was studied by SEM. FTIR was used to characterize the organic matter in LC fibers by identifying various molecular stretching and vibrational modes of C, H, and O-containing molecules. Electric permittivity was measured as a function of electric field frequency at room temperature which revealed the value of 23. 5 (at 1 kHz) for the sample LC/TiO2/Ag 9000s indicating the best charge storing capability of the sample. Impedance analysis was employed to identify various charge carrier mechanisms active in the sheets. It was found through impedance analysis that there is an active diffusion-controlled impedance mechanism of Au-coated samples causing an increased conductivity via the ionic diffusion. This diffusion-controlled conduction was modeled by the Warburg element. The enhanced conductivity due to ionic diffusion makes these samples more useful as electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements of the electrodeposited samples established the increase in conductive properties and efficient kinetics of LC/TiO2 paper sheets. The current study suggests that Ag and Au-coated paper electrodes can be potential candidates for energy conversion and storage applications.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1474-9092 .- 1474-905X. ; 7:1, s. 15-27
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This year theMontreal Protocol celebrates its 20th Anniversary. In September 1987, 24 countries signed the ‘Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer’. Today 191 countries have signed and have met strict commitments on phasing out of ozone depleting substances with the result that a 95% reduction of these substances has been achieved. The Montreal Protocol has also contributed to slowing the rate of global climate change, since most of the ozone depleting substances are also effective greenhouse gases. Even though much has been achieved, the future of the stratospheric ozone layer relies on full compliance of the Montreal Protocol by all countries for the remaining substances, including methyl bromide, as well as strict monitoring of potential risks from the production of substitute chemicals. Also the ozone depleting substances existing in banks and equipment need special attention to prevent their release to the stratosphere. Since many of the ozone depleting substances already in the atmosphere are long-lived, recovery cannot be immediate and present projections estimate a return to pre-1980 levels by 2050 to 2075. It has also been predicted that the interactions of the effects of the ozone layer and that of other climate change factors will become increasingly important.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences. - 1474-9092. ; 8:1, s. 13-22
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • After the enthusiastic celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 2007, the work for the protection of the ozone layer continues. The Environmental Effects Assessment Panel is one of the three expert panels within theMontreal Protocol. This “EEAP” deals with the increase of the UV irradiance on the Earth’s surface and its effects on human health, animals, plants, biogeochemistry, air quality and materials. For the past few years, interactions of ozone depletion with climate change have also been considered. It has become clear that the environmental problems will be long-lasting. In spite of the fact that the worldwide production of ozone depleting chemicals has already been reduced by 95%, the environmental disturbances are expected to persist for about the next half a century, even if the protective work is actively continued, and completed. The latest full report was published in Photochem. Photobiol. Sci., 2007, 6, 201–332, and the last progress report in Photochem. Photobiol. Sci., 2008, 7, 15–27. The next full report on environmental effects is scheduled for the year 2010. The present progress report 2008 is one of the short interim reports, appearing annually.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1474-9092 .- 1474-905X. ; 16:2, s. 107-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Parties to the Montreal Protocol are informed by three Panels of experts. One of these is the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP), which deals with two focal issues. The first focus is the effects of UV radiation on human health, animals, plants, biogeochemistry, air quality, and materials. The second focus is on interactions between UV radiation and global climate change and how these may affect humans and the environment. When considering the effects of climate change, it has become clear that processes resulting in changes in stratospheric ozone are more complex than previously believed. As a result of this, human health and environmental issues will be longer-lasting and more regionally variable. Like the other Panels, the EEAPproduces a detailed report every four years; the most recent was published as a series of seven papers in 2015 (Photochem. Photobiol. Sci., 2015, 14, 1–184). In the years in between, the EEAP produces less detailed and shorter Progress Reports of the relevant scientific findings. The most recent of these was for 2015 (Photochem. Photobiol. Sci., 2016, 15, 141–147). The present Progress Report for 2016 assesses some of the highlights and new insights with regard to the interactive nature of the direct and indirect effects of UV radiation, atmospheric processes, and climate change. The more detailed Quadrennial Assessment will bemade available in 2018.

  • Aluminium recovery vs. hydrogen production as resource recovery options for fine MSWI bottom ash fraction
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Waste Management: international journal of integrated waste management, science and technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-2456. ; 33:5, s. 1174-1181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Waste incineration bottom ash fine fraction contains a significant amount of aluminium, but previous works have shown that current recovery options based on standard on-step Eddy Current Separation (ECS) have limited efficiency. In this paper, we evaluated the improvement in the efficiency of ECS by using an additional step of crushing and sieving. The efficiency of metallic Al recovery was quantified by measuring hydrogen gas production. The ash samples were also tested for total aluminium content with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). As an alternative to material recovery, we also investigated the possibility to convert residual metallic Al into useful energy, promoting H-2 gas production by reacting metallic Al with water at high pH. The results show that the total aluminium concentration in the <4 mm bottom ash fraction is on average 8% of the weight of the dry ash, with less than 15% of it being present in the metallic form. Of this latter, only 21% can be potentially recovered with ECS combined with crushing and sieving stages and subsequently recycled. For hydrogen production, using 10 M NaOH at 1 L/S ratio results in the release of 6-111 of H-2 gas for each kilogram of fine dry ash, equivalent to an energy potential of 118 kJ. • 2021
  • Ingår i: Europace. - : Oxford University Press. - 1099-5129 .- 1532-2092. ; 23:3, s. 329-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimsThe risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF) and its complications continues to increase, despite good progress in preventing AF-related strokes. Methods and resultsThis article summarizes the outcomes of the 7th Consensus Conference of the Atrial Fibrillation NETwork (AFNET) and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) held in Lisbon in March 2019. Sixty-five international AF specialists met to present new data and find consensus on pressing issues in AF prevention, management and future research to improve care for patients with AF and prevent AF-related complications. This article is the main outcome of an interactive, iterative discussion between breakout specialist groups and the meeting plenary. AF patients have dynamic risk profiles requiring repeated assessment and risk-based therapy stratification to optimize quality of care. Interrogation of deeply phenotyped datasets with outcomes will lead to a better understanding of the cardiac and systemic effects of AF, interacting with comorbidities and predisposing factors, enabling stratified therapy. New proposals include an algorithm for the acute management of patients with AF and heart failure, a call for a refined, data-driven assessment of stroke risk, suggestions for anticoagulation use in special populations, and a call for rhythm control therapy selection based on risk of AF recurrence.ConclusionThe remaining morbidity and mortality in patients with AF needs better characterization. Likely drivers of the remaining AF-related problems are AF burden, potentially treatable by rhythm control therapy, and concomitant conditions, potentially treatable by treating these conditions. Identifying the drivers of AF-related complications holds promise for stratified therapy.

    • BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a clinically heterogeneous disease in which the risk of disease is influenced by complex genetic and environmental contributions. Alleles of HLA-DRB1, IRF5, and STAT4are established susceptibility genes; there is strong evidence for the existence of additional risk loci.METHODS: We genotyped more than 500,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DNA samples from 1311 case subjects with SLE and 1783 control subjects; all subjects were North Americans of European descent. Genotypes from 1557 additional control subjects were obtained from public data repositories. We measured the association between the SNPs and SLE after applying strict quality-control filters to reduce technical artifacts and to correct for the presence of population stratification. Replication of the top loci was performed in 793 case subjects and 857 control subjects from Sweden.RESULTS: Genetic variation in the region upstream from the transcription initiation site of the gene encoding B lymphoid tyrosine kinase (BLK) and C8orf13 (chromosome 8p23.1) was associated with disease risk in both the U.S. and Swedish case–control series (rs13277113; odds ratio, 1.39; P=1×10−10) and also with altered levels of messenger RNA in B-cell lines. In addition, variants on chromosome 16p11.22, near the genes encoding integrin alpha M (ITGAM, or CD11b) and integrin alpha X (ITGAX), were associated with SLE in the combined sample (rs11574637; odds ratio, 1.33; P=3×10−11).

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Waste Management & Research. - 1096-3669. ; 33:9, s. 805-811
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A common assumption regarding the residual organic matter, in bottom ash, is that it does not represent a significant pool of organic carbon and, beyond metal-ion complexation process, it is of little consequence to evolution of ash/leachate chemistry. This article evaluates the effect of residual organic matter and associated microbial respiratory processes on leaching of toxic metals (i.e. arsenic, copper, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony and zinc), eco-toxicity of ash leachates. Microbial respiration was quantified with help of a respirometric test equipment OXITOP control system. The effect of microbial respiration on metal/residual organic matter leaching and eco-toxicity was quantified with the help of batch leaching tests and an eco-toxicity assay - Daphnia magna. In general, the microbial respiration process decreased the leachate pH and eco-toxicity, indicating modification of bioavailability of metal species. Furthermore, the leaching of critical metals, such as copper and chromium, decreased after the respiration in both ash types (fresh and weathered). It was concluded that microbial respiration, if harnessed properly, could enhance the stability of fresh bottom ash and may promote its reuse.

  • Creativity– business Model Innovation Relationship and Financial Performance of the Firm
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The Annual Meeting of The Academy of Management, 2022, Vol. 2022, No. 1. - : Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study analyzes the creativity– business model innovation relationship and its impact on financial performance of the firm in the context of advertising industry where there are limited opportunities for process or product innovation. Using moderated mediation model, it is argued that creativity positively affect the business model innovation. Also, business model innovation improves the firm financial performance. Thus, business model innovation mediates the relationship between creativity and financial performance of the firm. Moreover, business group affiliation moderates the impact of business model innovation on firm performance. The results from panel dataset largely support the proposed model. The study contributes to the literature on creativity and business model innovation.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Management Journal. - : Elsevier. - 0263-2373 .- 1873-5681. ; 40:5, s. 729-740
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Considering the immense potential of sustainable business models in tackling the broader challenge of corporate sustainability, this paper integrates the literature streams on sustainability practices and organizational business models to analyze the performance implications of a firm's sustainable value proposition. Based on the analysis of a large panel dataset across different industries, consistent with the proposed theory, a sustainable value proposition has been found to have a positive impact on a firm's market-based financial performance (namely, Tobin's Q). Yet, this impact turns out to be highly context-dependent. In particular, the findings reveal that a firm's R&D capabilities improve the positive effect of a sustainable value proposition on a firm's financial performance. At the same time, the marketing communication capabilities and sustainable practices regarding employee relations reduce the sustainable value proposition's financial performance effect, arguably due to the costs associated with marketing and the loss in employee interest during the process of adopting the sustainable business model elements.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Management Education. - : Elsevier. - 1472-8117 .- 2352-3565. ; 22:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study argues that the educational needs of engineering students for entrepreneurship and managerial education are specific and evolving over time toward a set of skills and knowledge needed in digital and dynamic world. Existing research largely ignored the distinct and evolving nature of these educational needs and their implications for entrepreneurship and managerial education of engineering students. Using design thinking and teaching model literature, we proposed teaching model framework and derived propositions from conceptual arguments to address these educational needs effectively. The proposed conceptual teaching model framework elaborates on the incorporation of cognitive acts of design in various aspects at ontological, didactical, and contextual levels. The framework views education as a process of co-construction, centered on students, where the role of the teacher is similar to that of a coach. Students work in teams and practice the cognitive acts of design that lead to the development of interpersonal, entrepreneurial, and managerial skills. For this purpose, open-ended questioning, real-life customer problems, design thinking methodology, and lean methodology are proposed as effective content and pedagogies to promote the entrepreneurial behaviors required in the current industrial scenario.

  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The Annual Meeting of The Academy of Management, 2022, Vol. 2022, No. 1. - : Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study argues that the needs of engineering students for managerial education are distinct and evolving over time towards entrepreneurial mindset due to new industrial and technological trends. Consequently, managerial education of engineering students is shifting towards Science and technology entrepreneurship education (STEE). Moreover, considering the relevance of design cognition in entrepreneurship and engineering, it is argued that STEE can tackle the challenge more effectively by incorporating design cognition in the education process. Propositions are derived from research literature, and a teaching model approach is proposed that elaborated on the incorporation of cognitive acts of design in various aspects at ontological, didactical, and contextual levels in STEE. The proposed framework views education as a process of co-construction, centered on students where the role of teacher is like a coach. Students work in teams and practice the cognitive acts of design that lead to the development of interpersonal, entrepreneurial, and managerial skills. For this purpose, open-ended questioning, real life case studies, problem and project based learning, and lean methodology are proposed as effective content and pedagogies to promote the entrepreneurial behaviors required in the current industrial scenario.

  • When Business Model Innovation Creates Value for Companies : A Meta-Analysis on Institutional Contingencies

  • Ingår i: Journal of Management Studies. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0022-2380 .- 1467-6486. ; 61:5, s. 1825-1883
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a meta-analysis based on 147 primary studies from 27 countries, we synthesize extant knowledge on the relationship between business model innovation (BMI) and firm performance. Our results show that the positive BMI-firm performance relationship is robust across various conceptualizations of and measures for BMI. Building on prior research suggesting that not all companies benefit equally from engaging in BMI, we set out to study important institutional-level contingencies for the BMI-performance relationship. We build on the institution-based view as theoretical perspective and combine it with insights from the innovation literature to theorize that the magnitude of the positive effect of BMI on firm performance depends on institutional contingencies, specifically national culture and pro-market institutions, because these national institutions affect BMI-driven organizational learning processes. Specifically, we argue and show that the positive relationship between BMI and performance is weaker in countries characterized by high levels of masculinity and individualism, and stronger in countries characterized by high levels of customer orientation, economic freedom, and education. Besides the country-level contingencies, the inclusion of various control variables in our meta-analysis also reveals that, even if located in the same institutional environment, start-up firms benefit more from BMI than mature firms and that there are no observable differences regarding BMI benefits among different industries. Moreover, a nuanced analysis shows that the positive effect on performance is stronger when BMI rely on changes in cognitive schemas compared to BMI that are of more technical nature.

    • This study presents the direct growth of CuS nanotubes (NTs) on nickel foam using a facile solution synthesis route. The structural, elemental and morphological analyses of CuS NTs grown Ni foam were conducted through X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and field emission scanning electron microscope. The electrochemical performance of the prepared electrodes was comprehensively characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The CuS NTs grown electrodes delivered a specific capacitance of 1539 Fg−1 at 1 mVs−1 and 1365 Fg−1 at 5 Ag−1, demonstrating a remarkable rate capability of 66 % at an extremely high current density of 25 Ag−1. Notably, the CuS NTs electrode demonstrated good cyclic stability, as evidenced by a charge retention of 75.5 % after 3000 cycles at a high current density of 20 Ag−1. The charge storage mechanism was predominantly diffusion controlled, accomplished by analyzing CV data. Overall, this work evinces that the as-synthesized CuS NTs hold a significant promise as electrode materials for high-performance electrochemical energy storage applications.

    • Alzheimer's is an acute degenerative disease affecting the elderly population all over the world. The detection of disease at an early stage in the absence of a large-scale annotated dataset is crucial to the clinical treatment for the prevention and early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we propose a transfer learning base approach to classify various stages of AD. The proposed model can distinguish between normal control (NC), early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI), and AD. In this regard, we apply tissue segmentation to extract the gray matter from the MRI scans obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease National Initiative (ADNI) database. We utilize this gray matter to tune the pre-trained VGG architecture while freezing the features of the ImageNet database. It is achieved through the addition of a layer with step-wise freezing of the existing blocks in the network. It not only assists transfer learning but also contributes to learning new features efficiently. Extensive experiments are conducted and results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach.

  • The CALHM1 P86L Polymorphism is a Genetic Modifier of Age at Onset in Alzheimer's Disease : a Meta-Analysis Study

    • The only established genetic determinant of non-Mendelian forms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the epsilon 4 allele of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE). Recently, it has been reported that the P86L polymorphism of the calcium homeostasis modulator 1 gene (CALHM1) is associated with the risk of developing AD. In order to independently assess this association, we performed a meta-analysis of 7,873 AD cases and 13,274 controls of Caucasian origin (from a total of 24 centers in Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and the USA). Our results indicate that the CALHM1 P86L polymorphism is likely not a genetic determinant of AD but may modulate age of onset by interacting with the effect of the epsilon 4 allele of the APOE gene.

  • Biocompatible Hollow Gadolinium Oxide Nanocarriers for the Transport of Bioactive Molecules to Cells

    • Integrating imaging and therapeutic capabilities into a single entity can offer enhanced diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy in clinically effective formulations. Due to the diversity of chemical structures and/or limited solubility of inhibitors or fluorophores, it is essential to employ a robust delivery carrier that can facilitate drug absorption and distribution during its circulation in the blood. This study explores the potential of hollow gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanocarriers in imaging and drug delivery applications. The citric acid (CA)-capped hollow gadolinium oxide nanocarriers were synthesized via urea-assisted precipitation and hydrothermal methods using carbon spheres as sacrificial templates. The resulting nanosized hollow spheres displayed a spherical morphology and demonstrated relaxation rates in the longitudinal and transverse directions, as indicated by their r 1 and r(2) values of 1.8 and 5.3 s(-1) mM(-1), respectively. To mimic the physiological conditions, the hollow gadolinium oxide spheres were loaded separately with antibiotic sparfloxacin and the azo dye Congo red at neutral pH (7.4) and body temperature (37 degrees C). The CR-loaded nanospheres exhibited a time-dependent internalization behavior with HeLa cells, suggesting their imaging potential for intracellular drug delivery. Furthermore, the SP-loaded nanospheres demonstrated antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, demonstrating their therapeutic potential against bacterial infections. To mitigate the risk of leaching of Gd3+ ions and their inherent toxicity, a CA coating was applied to hollow gadolinium oxide surface which resulted in outstanding cell viability of the surface functionalized nanocarriers. In addition, the CA coating offered additional support for the increased encapsulation and continuous release of drug molecules until 1 week (168 h). The characterization data provide evidence for the potential of CA-capped hollow gadolinium oxide spheres as positive MR contrast agents and their applicability as safe and controlled drug carriers.

  • Air-Stable Gadolinium Precursors for the Facile Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Gd2O3 Nanocontrast Agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 18:2, s. 633-641

    • Using metal organic precursors in materials synthesis remains a challenge due to their high moisture susceptibility. In this work, we describe a facile methodology for the synthesis of Gd2O3-based contrast agents from two new gadolinium-based complexes. [Gd(PyTFP)(4)] (PyH) 1 (PyTFP = C8H5NOF3, Py = C5H5N) and [Gd(DMOTFP)(3)Py] 2 (DMOTFP = C8H7NO2F3) were synthesized via a classical ligand exchange reaction of [Gd{N(SiMe3)(2)}(3)] under inert conditions. As a result, X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a distorted square antiprismatic coordination and an augmented triangular prismatic arrangement of ligands around gadolinium atoms in 1 and 2, respectively. It also showed that 1 is an anionic complex of formula [Gd(PyTFP)(4)](PyH), while a neutral tris-compound, [Gd(DMOTFP)(3)Py], was obtained as a pyridine adduct in 2. Fast and reproducible microwave-assisted decomposition of 1 and 2 provided homogeneous Gd(OH)(3) nanorods at mild temperature without using any surfactant or capping reagent. As-synthesized nanorods were easily transformed into a cubic phase of Gd2O3 nanoparticles by thermal treatment under ambient conditions. The magnetic measurement showed the typical paramagnetic behavior of the Gd2O3 nanoparticles (NPs). The cytotoxicity profile demonstrates the biocompatibility and negligible toxicity of the as-synthesized nanoprobes. The suggested approach provides a new class of gadolinium-based precursors which allows facile synthesis of highly crystalline Gd2O3 NPs.

  • Streamflow droughts aggravated by human activities despite management
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-9326. ; 17:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human activities both aggravate and alleviate streamflow drought. Here we show that aggravation is dominant in contrasting cases around the world analysed with a consistent methodology. Our 28 cases included different combinations of human-water interactions. We found that water abstraction aggravated all drought characteristics, with increases of 20%-305% in total time in drought found across the case studies, and increases in total deficit of up to almost 3000%. Water transfers reduced drought time and deficit by up to 97%. In cases with both abstraction and water transfers into the catchment or augmenting streamflow from groundwater, the water inputs could not compensate for the aggravation of droughts due to abstraction and only shift the effects in space or time. Reservoir releases for downstream water use alleviated droughts in the dry season, but also led to deficits in the wet season by changing flow seasonality. This led to minor changes in average drought duration (-26 to +38%) and moderate changes in average drought deficit (-86 to +369%). Land use showed a smaller impact on streamflow drought, also with both increases and decreases observed (-48 to +98%). Sewage return flows and pipe leakage possibly counteracted the effects of increased imperviousness in urban areas; however, untangling the effects of land use change on streamflow drought is challenging. This synthesis of diverse global cases highlights the complexity of the human influence on streamflow drought and the added value of empirical comparative studies. Results indicate both intended and unintended consequences of water management and infrastructure on downstream society and ecosystems.
