  • A method for measuring light ion reaction cross-sections
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 547:2-3, s. 541-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experimental procedure for measuring reaction cross-sections of light ions in the energy range 20 50 MeV/nucleon, using a modified attenuation technique, is described. The detection method incorporates a forward detector that simultaneously measures the reaction cross-sections for five different sizes of the solid angle in steps from 99.1% to 99.8% of the total solid angle. The final reaction cross-section values are obtained by extrapolation to the full solid angle.

  • Balance function and fall-related efficacy in patients with newly operated hip fracture
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Clinical rehabilitation. - : SAGE Publications. - 0269-2155 .- 1477-0873. ; 14:5, s. 497-505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate the relation between fall-related efficacy in daily-life activities and functional as well as instrumental tests of balance in patients with hip fracture. Design: Analysis of different aspects of balance using the Falls Efficacy Scale, Swedish version FES(S), questions on fear of falling, Functional Reach (FR) and tests on a balance platform (Chattanooga). Subjects: Fifty-five elderly inpatients (mean age 82.3) with newly operated hip fracture who were assessed during the last week in hospital before discharge. Results: The results showed a significant relationship between the subjective ability measured with the FES(S) and the objectively measured balance in the Functional Reach test and also between fall-related efficacy measured with FES(S) and fear of falling. Very few significant correlations were found between the results from balance tests on the force platform and those obtained with FES(S) and FR. Conclusions: Both the Falls Efficacy Scale, Swedish version, and the Functional Reach have been shown to be useful in analysing balance function in elderly patients newly operated on for hip fracture. The Falls Efficacy Scale also indicates which of the daily activities the patient perceives as troublesome and thus require further training.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW C-NUCLEAR PHYSICS. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0556-2813. ; 56:2, s. 950-953
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The effects of the real potential on the absorption of lighter heavy ions are discussed. The effects are illustrated with ''effective potentials'' reproducing the elastic scattering phase shifts in the eikonal approximation.

  • Effects of isradipine, a new calcium antagonist, on postpartum uterine activity
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1600-0412 .- 0001-6349. ; 68:8, s. 725-730
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of a new calcium antagonist, isradipine (PN 200-110) on postpartum uterine activity and the maternal cardiovascular system were investigated. Uterine activity was recorded by a microtip transducer catheter inserted transcervically within 45 min of normal vaginal delivery. 0.5 mg of isradipine was given as a bolus injection during 5 min to 7 women with spontaneous uterine activity and 1 mg was given during a 15-min period to another 8 women with oxytocin-stimulated uterine activity. Matched controls with similar pre-injection activity (+/- 5%) but not given the drug were selected for comparison. The effects of the drug in 3 women (given 1 mg of isradipine) were compared with those in matched controls and in women given 0.25 mg of terbutalin i.v. as a bolus injection. Isradipine had a marked inhibitory effect on both spontaneous and oxytocin-stimulated uterine activity. The inhibitory effect of 1 mg of isradipine seemed comparable to that of 0.25 mg of terbutalin. The inhibition occurred within 1-2 min after the injection and was sustained throughout the study period (2 h). A transient reduction of the systolic (mean maximum decrease 10-15%) and diastolic blood pressure (mean maximum decrease 15-20%) was seen, particularly during the injection period. Hypotension (systolic blood pressure less than 80 mmHg) was not recorded. A moderate increase in pulse rate (mean maximum increase 22-27%) was seen in all cases. The results show that isradipine given as a bolus injection can inhibit early postpartum uterine activity, with minimal side effects.

  • An improved near-real-Time precipitation retrieval for Brazil
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1867-1381 .- 1867-8548. ; 15:23, s. 6907-6933
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Observations from geostationary satellites can provide spatially continuous coverage at continental scales with high spatial and temporal resolution. Because of this, they are commonly used to complement ground-based precipitation measurements, whose coverage is often more limited. We present Hydronn, a neural-network-based, near-real-Time precipitation retrieval for Brazil based on visible and infrared (Vis-IR) observations from the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 16 (GOES-16). The retrieval, which employs a convolutional neural network to perform Bayesian precipitation retrievals, was developed with the aims of (1) leveraging the full potential of latest-generation geostationary observations and (2) providing probabilistic precipitation estimates with well-calibrated uncertainties. The retrieval is trained using more than 3 years of collocations with combined radar and radiometer retrievals from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) core observatory over South America. The accuracy of instantaneous precipitation estimates is assessed using a separate year of GPM combined retrievals and compared to retrievals from passive microwave (PMW) sensors and HYDRO, the Vis-IR retrieval that is currently in operational use at the Brazilian Institute for Space Research. Using all available channels of the ABI, Hydronn achieves accuracy close to that of state-of-The-Art PMW precipitation retrievals in both precipitation estimation and detection despite the lower information content of the Vis-IR observations. Hourly, daily, and monthly precipitation accumulations are evaluated against gauge measurements for June and December 2020 and compared to HYDRO, the Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN) Cloud Classification System (CCS), and the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG). Compared to HYDRO, Hydronn reduces the mean absolute error for hourly accumulations by 21% (22%) compared to HYDRO by 44% (41%) for the mean squared error (MSE) and increases the correlation by 138% (312%) for June (December) 2020. Compared to IMERG, the improvements correspond to 16% (14%), 12% (12%), and 20% (56%), respectively. Furthermore, we show that the probabilistic retrieval is well calibrated against gauge measurements when differences in the distributions of the training data and the gauge measurements are accounted for. Hydronn has the potential to significantly improve near-real-Time precipitation retrievals over Brazil. Furthermore, our results show that precipitation retrievals based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that leverage the full range of available observations from latest-generation geostationary satellites can provide instantaneous precipitation estimates with accuracy close to that of state-of-The-Art PMW retrievals. The high temporal resolution of the geostationary observation allows Hydronn to provide more accurate precipitation accumulations than any of the tested conventional precipitation retrievals. Hydronn thus clearly shows the potential of deep-learning-based precipitation retrievals to improve precipitation estimates from currently available satellite imagery.
