  • Improving network approaches to the study of complex social–ecological interdependencies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Sustainability. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2398-9629. ; 2:7, s. 551-559
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Achieving effective, sustainable environmental governance requires a better understanding of the causes and consequences of the complex patterns of interdependencies connecting people and ecosystems within and across scales. Network approaches for conceptualizing and analysing these interdependencies offer one promising solution. Here, we present two advances we argue are needed to further this area of research: (i) a typology of causal assumptions explicating the causal aims of any given network-centric study of social–ecological interdependencies; (ii) unifying research design considerations that facilitate conceptualizing exactly what is interdependent, through what types of relationships and in relation to what kinds of environmental problems. The latter builds on the appreciation that many environmental problems draw from a set of core challenges that re-occur across contexts. We demonstrate how these advances combine into a comparative heuristic that facilitates leveraging case-specific findings of social–ecological interdependencies to generalizable, yet context-sensitive, theories based on explicit assumptions of causal relationships.

  • Structural and magnetic dynamics in the magnetic shape-memory alloy Ni2MnGa
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 90:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic shape-memory Heusler alloys are multiferroics stabilized by the correlations between electronic, magnetic, and structural order. To study these correlations we use time-resolved x-ray diffraction and magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments to measure the laser induced dynamics in a Heusler alloy Ni2MnGa film and reveal a set of time scales intrinsic to the system. We observe a coherent phonon which we identify as the amplitudon of the modulated structure and an ultrafast phase transition leading to a quenching of the incommensurate modulation within 300 fs with a recovery time of a few ps. The thermally driven martensitic transition to the high temperature cubic phase proceeds via nucleation within a few ps and domain growth limited by the speed of sound. The demagnetization time is 320 fs, which is comparable to the quenching of the structural modulation.

  • Design of an electromagnetic elliptical wiggler for ELETTRA
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 3527-3529
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The initial concept of the electromagnetic elliptical wiggler (EEW) for ELETTRA is a combination of a vertical permanent magnet to generate a wiggler field and a horizontal electromagnet to provide the possibility of switching the helicity of the X-ray radiation. The main aspects of the design of the EEW under construction for ELETTRA are discussed.

  • Global Biobank Meta-analysis Initiative : Powering genetic discovery across human disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cell Genomics. - : Elsevier. - 2666-979X. ; 2:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biobanks facilitate genome-wide association studies (GWASs), which have mapped genomic loci across a range of human diseases and traits. However, most biobanks are primarily composed of individuals of European ancestry. We introduce the Global Biobank Meta-analysis Initiative (GBMI)-a collaborative network of 23 biobanks from 4 continents representing more than 2.2 million consented individuals with genetic data linked to electronic health records. GBMI meta-analyzes summary statistics from GWASs generated using harmonized genotypes and phenotypes from member biobanks for 14 exemplar diseases and endpoints. This strategy validates that GWASs conducted in diverse biobanks can be integrated despite heterogeneity in case definitions, recruitment strategies, and baseline characteristics. This collaborative effort improves GWAS power for diseases, benefits understudied diseases, and improves risk prediction while also enabling the nomination of disease genes and drug candidates by incorporating gene and protein expression data and providing insight into the underlying biology of human diseases and traits.

  • Picosecond dynamics of laser-induced strain in graphite
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 84:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the use of grazing-incidence time-resolved x-ray diffraction to investigate the evolution of strain in natural graphite excited by femtosecond-laser pulses in the fluence range of 6-35 mJ/cm(2). Strains corresponding to up to similar to 2.8% c-axis expansion were observed. We show that the experimental data is in good agreement with calculations based on the Thomsen strain model in conjunction with dynamical diffraction theory. Furthermore we find no evidence of nonthermal lattice expansion as reported in recent ultrafast electron-diffraction studies of laser-excited graphite conducted under comparable excitation conditions.

  • Disentangling transient charge order from structural dynamics contributions during coherent atomic motion studied by ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950. ; 99:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the ultrafast dynamics of charge order and structural response during the photoinduced suppression of charge and orbital order in a mixed-valence manganite. Employing femtosecond time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction below and at the Mn K absorption edge, we present a method to disentangle the transient charge order and structural dynamics in thin films of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3. Based on the static resonant scattering spectra, we extract the dispersion correction of charge-ordered Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions, allowing us to separate the transient contributions of purely charge order from structural contributions to the scattering amplitude after optical excitation. Our finding of a coherent structural mode at around 2.3THz, which primarily modulates the lattice but does not strongly affect the charge order, supports the picture of the charge order being the driving force of the combined charge, orbital, and structural transition.

  • Social-ecological network analysis for sustainability sciences : a systematic review and innovative research agenda for the future
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-9326. ; 14:9
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social-ecological network (SEN) concepts and tools are increasingly used in human-environment and sustainability sciences. We take stock of this budding research area to further show the strength of SEN analysis for complex human-environment settings, identify future synergies between SEN and wider human-environment research, and provide guidance about when to use different kinds of SEN approaches and models. We characterize SEN research along a spectrum specifying the degree of explicit network representation of system components and dynamics. We then systematically review one end of this spectrum, what we term 'fully articulated SEN' studies, which specifically model unique social and ecological units and relationships. Results show a larger number of papers focus on methodological advancement and applied ends. While there has been some development and testing of theories, this remains an area for future work and would help develop SENs as a unique field of research, not just a method. Authors have studied diverse systems, while mainly focusing on the problem of social-ecological fit alongside a scattering of other topics. There is strong potential, however, to engage other issues central to human-environment studies. Analyzing the simultaneous effects of multiple social, environmental, and coupled processes, change over time, and linking network structures to outcomes are also areas for future advancement. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of (fully articulated) SEN research, a necessary step that can help scholars develop comparable cases and fill research gaps.
