  • LOFT - The large observatory for x-ray timing
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9780819491442 ; , s. 84432D-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultradense matter. These primary science goals will be addressed by a payload composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a collimated (<1 degree field of view) experiment operating in the energy range 2-50 keV, with a 10 m2 peak effective area and an energy resolution of 260 eV at 6 keV. The WFM will operate in the same energy range as the LAD, enabling simultaneous monitoring of a few-steradian wide field of view, with an angular resolution of <5 arcmin. The LAD and WFM experiments will allow us to investigate variability from submillisecond QPO's to yearlong transient outbursts. In this paper we report the current status of the project.

  • The Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT)
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 34:2, s. 415-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-time-resolution X-ray observations of compact objects provide direct access to strong-field gravity, to the equation of state of ultradense matter and to black hole masses and spins. A 10 m(2)-class instrument in combination with good spectral resolution is required to exploit the relevant diagnostics and answer two of the fundamental questions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision Theme "Matter under extreme conditions", namely: does matter orbiting close to the event horizon follow the predictions of general relativity? What is the equation of state of matter in neutron stars? The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the four Cosmic Vision M3 candidate missions to undergo an assessment phase, will revolutionise the study of collapsed objects in our galaxy and of the brightest supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Thanks to an innovative design and the development of large-area monolithic silicon drift detectors, the Large Area Detector (LAD) on board LOFT will achieve an effective area of similar to 12 m(2) (more than an order of magnitude larger than any spaceborne predecessor) in the 2-30 keV range (up to 50 keV in expanded mode), yet still fits a conventional platform and small/medium-class launcher. With this large area and a spectral resolution of < 260 eV, LOFT will yield unprecedented information on strongly curved spacetimes and matter under extreme conditions of pressure and magnetic field strength.

  • Science with e-ASTROGAM A space mission for MeV-GeV gamma-ray astrophysics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Astrophysics. - : Elsevier. - 2214-4048 .- 2214-4056. ; 19, s. 1-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • e-ASTROGAM ('enhanced ASTROGAM') is a breakthrough Observatory space mission, with a detector composed by a Silicon tracker, a calorimeter, and an anticoincidence system, dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.3 MeV to 3 GeV - the lower energy limit can be pushed to energies as low as 150 keV for the tracker, and to 30 keV for calorimetric detection. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the most powerful Galactic and extragalactic sources, elucidating the nature of their relativistic outflows and their effects on the surroundings. With a line sensitivity in the MeV energy range one to two orders of magnitude better than previous generation instruments, e-ASTROGAM will determine the origin of key isotopes fundamental for the understanding of supernova explosion and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The mission will provide unique data of significant interest to a broad astronomical community, complementary to powerful observatories such as LIGO-Virgo-GEO600-KAGRA, SKA, ALMA, E-ELT, TMT, LSST, JWST, Athena, CTA, IceCube, KM3NeT, and LISA.

  • Supernovae 2016bdu and 2005gl, and their link with SN 2009ip-like transients : another piece of the puzzle
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 474:1, s. 197-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Supernova (SN) 2016bdu is an unusual transient resembling SN 2009ip. SN 2009ip-like events are characterized by a long-lasting phase of erratic variability that ends with two luminous outbursts a few weeks apart. The second outburst is significantly more luminous (about 3 mag) than the first. In the case of SN 2016bdu, the first outburst (Event A) reached an absolute magnitude M-r approximate to -15.3 mag, while the second one (Event B) occurred over one month later and reached M-r approximate to -18 mag. By inspecting archival data, a faint source at the position of SN 2016bdu is several times in the past few years. We interpret these detections as signatures of a phase of erratic variability, similar to that experienced by SN 2009ip between 2008 and mid-2012, and resembling the currently observed variability of the luminous blue variable SN 2000ch in NGC 3432. Spectroscopic monitoring of SN 2016bdu during the second peak initially shows features typical of an SN IIn. One month after the Event B maximum, the spectra develop broad Balmer lines with P Cygni profiles and broad metal features. At these late phases, the spectra resemble those of a typical Type II SN. All members of this SN 2009ip-like group are remarkably similar to the Type IIn SN 2005gl. For this object, the claim of a terminal SN explosion is supported by the disappearance of the progenitor star. While the similarity with SN 2005gl supports a genuine SN explosion scenario for SN 2009ip-like events, the unequivocal detection of nucleosynthesized elements in their nebular spectra is still missing.

  • Cell transcriptomic atlas of the non-human primate Macaca fascicularis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 604:7907, s. 723-731
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studying tissue composition and function in non-human primates (NHPs) is crucial to understand the nature of our own species. Here we present a large-scale cell transcriptomic atlas that encompasses over 1 million cells from 45 tissues of the adult NHP Macaca fascicularis. This dataset provides a vast annotated resource to study a species phylogenetically close to humans. To demonstrate the utility of the atlas, we have reconstructed the cell–cell interaction networks that drive Wnt signalling across the body, mapped the distribution of receptors and co-receptors for viruses causing human infectious diseases, and intersected our data with human genetic disease orthologues to establish potential clinical associations. Our M. fascicularis cell atlas constitutes an essential reference for future studies in humans and NHPs.

  • Gaia16apd-a link between fast and slowly declining type I superluminous supernovae
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 469:1, s. 1246-1258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present ultraviolet (UV), optical and infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy of the type Ic superluminous supernova (SLSN) Gaia16apd (= SN 2016eay), covering its evolution from 26 d before the g-band peak to 234.1 d after the peak. Gaia16apd was followed as a part of the NOT Unbiased Transient Survey (NUTS). It is one of the closest SLSNe known (z = 0.102 +/- 0.001), with detailed optical and UV observations covering the peak. Gaia16apd is a spectroscopically typical type Ic SLSN, exhibiting the characteristic blue early spectra with O II absorption, and reaches a peak M-g = -21.8 +/- 0.1 mag. However, photometrically it exhibits an evolution intermediate between the fast and slowly declining type Ic SLSNe, with an early evolution closer to the fast-declining events. Together with LSQ12dlf, another SLSN with similar properties, it demonstrates a possible continuum between fast and slowly declining events. It is unusually UV-bright even for an SLSN, reaching a non-K-corrected M-uvm2 similar or equal to -23.3 mag, the only other type Ic SLSN with similar UV brightness being SN 2010gx. Assuming that Gaia16apd was powered by magnetar spin-down, we derive a period of P = 1.9 +/- 0.2 ms and a magnetic field of B = 1.9 +/- 0.2 x 10(14) G for the magnetar. The estimated ejecta mass is between 8 and 16 M circle dot, and the kinetic energy between 1.3 and 2.5 x 10(52) erg, depending on opacity and assuming that the entire ejecta is swept up into a thin shell. Despite the early photometric differences, the spectra at late times are similar to slowly declining type Ic SLSNe, implying that the two subclasses originate from similar progenitors.

  • AT 2017be-a new member of the class of intermediate-luminosity red transients
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 480:3, s. 3424-3445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the results of our spectrophotometric monitoring campaign for AT 2017be in NGC 2537. Its light curve reveals a fast rise to an optical maximum, followed by a plateau lasting about 30 d, and finally a fast decline. Its absolute peak magnitude (M-r similar or equal to -12 mag) is fainter than that of core-collapse supernovae, and is consistent with those of supernova impostors and other intermediate-luminosity optical transients. The quasi-bolometric light-curve peaks at similar to 2 x 10(40) erg s(-1), and the late-time photometry allows us to constrain an ejected Ni-56 mass of similar to 8 x 10(-4)M(circle dot). The spectra of AT 2017 be show minor evolution over the observational period, a relatively blue continuum showing at early phases, which becomes redder with time. A prominent H alpha emission line always dominates over other Balmer lines. Weak Fe II features, Can H&K, and the Ca II NIR triplet are also visible, while P-Cygni absorption troughs are found in a high-resolution spectrum. In addition, the [Ca II] lambda lambda 7291, 7324 doublet is visible in all spectra. This feature is typical of intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), similar to SN 2008S. The relatively shallow archival Spitzer data are not particularly constraining. On the other hand, a non-detection in deeper near-infrared HST images disfavours a massive Luminous Blue Variable eruption as the origin for AT 2017be. As has been suggested for other ILRTs, we propose that AT 2017be is a candidate for a weak electron-capture supernova explosion of a superasymptotic giant branch star, still embedded in a thick dusty envelope.

  • SN 2011fu : a type IIb supernova with a luminous double-peaked light curve
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 454:1, s. 95-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present optical and near-infrared observations of the type IIb supernova (SN) 2011fu from a few days to similar to 300 d after explosion. The SN presents a double-peaked light curve (LC) similar to that of SN 1993J, although more luminous and with a longer cooling phase after the primary peak. The spectral evolution is also similar to SN 1993J's, with hydrogen dominating the spectra to similar to 40 d, then helium gaining strength, and nebular emission lines appearing from similar to 60 d post-explosion. The velocities derived from the P-Cygni absorptions are overall similar to those of other type IIb SNe. We have found a strong similarity between the oxygen and magnesium line profiles at late times, which suggests that these lines are forming at the same location within the ejecta. The hydrodynamical modelling of the pseudo-bolometric LC and the observed photospheric velocities suggest that SN 2011fu was the explosion of an extended star (R similar to 450 R-circle dot), in which 1.3 x 10(51) erg of kinetic energy were released and 0.15 M-circle dot of Ni-56 were synthesized. In addition, a better reproduction of the observed early pseudo-bolometric LC is achieved if a more massive H-rich envelope than for other type IIb SNe is considered (0.3 M-circle dot). The hydrodynamical modelling of the LC and the comparison of our late-time spectra with nebular spectral models for type IIb SNe, point to a progenitor for SN 2011fu with a Zero Age Main Sequence (ZAMS) mass of 13-18 M-circle dot.

  • Co film stretching induced by lattice mismatch and annealing : The role of Graphene
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-4332. ; 432, s. 22-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin Co films intercalated between a Graphene capping layer and the Ir(111) surface are of interest for spintronics applications due to their peculiar magnetic properties and to their chemical stability. The structure, and then the magnetic properties, of the Co films depend on the intercalation process which is strongly influenced by the temperature, total amount of Cobalt and quality of the capping Graphene layer. In order to identify and disentangle the effects of these contributions, we report on the structural characterisation of four Co films as a function of thickness, annealing temperature, and Graphene capping. From the structural point of view, the deposition of Co on a hot Ir substrate mimics quite well the intercalation process proving the validity of the colander model describing the Graphene role during the process.

  • SEASTAR: A mission to study ocean submesoscale dynamics and small-scale atmosphere-ocean processes in coastal, shelf and polar seas
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-7745. ; 6:JUL
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • High-resolution satellite images of ocean color and sea surface temperature reveal an abundance of ocean fronts, vortices and filaments at scales below 10 km but measurements of ocean surface dynamics at these scales are rare. There is increasing recognition of the role played by small scale ocean processes in ocean-atmosphere coupling, upper-ocean mixing and ocean vertical transports, with advanced numerical models and in situ observations highlighting fundamental changes in dynamics when scales reach 1 km. Numerous scientific publications highlight the global impact of small oceanic scales on marine ecosystems, operational forecasts and long-term climate projections through strong ageostrophic circulations, large vertical ocean velocities and mixed layer re-stratification. Small-scale processes particularly dominate in coastal, shelf and polar seas where they mediate important exchanges between land, ocean, atmosphere and the cryosphere e.g. freshwater, pollutants. As numerical models continue to evolve towards finer spatial resolution and increasingly complex coupled atmosphere-wave-ice-ocean systems, modern observing capability lags behind, unable to deliver the high-resolution synoptic measurements of total currents, wind vectors and waves needed to advance understanding, develop better parameterizations and improve model validations, forecasts and projections. SEASTAR is a satellite mission concept that proposes to directly address this critical observational gap with synoptic two-dimensional imaging of total ocean surface current vectors and wind vectors at 1 km resolution and coincident directional wave spectra. Based on major recent advances in squinted along-track Synthetic Aperture Radar interferometry, SEASTAR is an innovative, mature concept with unique demonstrated capabilities, seeking to proceed towards spaceborne implementation within Europe and beyond.

  • Histopathological findings and follow-up after prophylactic mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction in 100 women from families with hereditary breast cancer.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Surgical Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-2157 .- 0748-7983. ; 34, s. 1148-1154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To survey the histopathological abnormalities in breasts of women who have undergone risk reducing mastectomy and to evaluate the effect of this measure on future breast cancer development. PATIENTS/METHODS: Between August 1995 and October 2006 100 consecutive women with a hereditary increased risk of breast cancer underwent prophylactic mastectomy (PM) at Malmö University Hospital. Fifty of the 100 women had no previous breast cancer. Fifty were BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers. All breast specimens have been examined histopathologically according to a prospective protocol. Follow-up data was collected from medical records and data in the Regional Cancer Registry. RESULTS: In the PM specimens abnormal lesions were found in 18 women (three with invasive cancers, eight in situ cancers and seven atypical hyperplasia). In previously healthy women lesions were more frequent after the age of 40 than among younger women (p=0.03). BRCA mutation carriers were more likely to present with ADH (atypical ductal hyperplasia)/ALH (atypical lobular hyperplasia) compared to the non-carriers/untested cases (p=0.01). After a median follow-up of 52 months (range 1-136 months) none of the women have developed breast cancer in the area of the prophylactically removed breast. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalent atypical or malignant lesions are relatively a common finding in PM specimens in asymptomatic women with hereditary increased risk of breast cancer. Such findings were significantly more common above age 40 in women without previous breast cancer. The risk of newly formed breast cancer after PM is small. The clinical importance of detecting a premalignant or preinvasive lesion in the breast at PM is still unclear.

  • Risk of recurrence following delayed large flap reconstruction after mastectomy for breast cancer.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1365-2168 .- 0007-1323. ; 98, s. 659-666
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective matched cohort study was to evaluate the rate of recurrence among women with delayed large flap breast reconstruction after mastectomy for breast cancer. The recurrence rate among women treated at a single hospital was compared with that in an individually matched control group of women with breast cancer who did not have reconstruction after mastectomy. METHODS: Between 1982 and 2001, 125 women with previous invasive breast carcinoma underwent delayed large flap breast reconstruction with pedicled musculocutaneous or microvascular flaps (a median of 32 months after mastectomy). They were matched individually with 182 women with breast cancer who had a mastectomy but did not undergo breast reconstruction. Matching criteria were year of diagnosis, age at diagnosis and treating hospital. Medical records were evaluated until October 2007. Histopathological specimens for all included women were re-evaluated. The endpoint was locoregional or distant breast cancer recurrence. The risk of recurrent disease was calculated using a Cox proportional hazards analysis, adjusted for established prognostic factors. RESULTS: Median follow-up for the entire cohort was 146 months. The reconstruction group had a 2·08 (95 per cent confidence interval 1·07 to 4·06) times higher risk of recurrent disease than the mastectomy only group. CONCLUSION: Women with breast cancer who had delayed reconstruction with a large flap in this study had a higher risk of recurrent disease than those with mastectomy alone. • Magnetic anisotropy of ultrathin cobalt films on Pt(111) investigated with x-ray diffraction: Effect of atomic mixing at the interface
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 65:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With standard and resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction we investigate the magnetic properties of Pt atoms in a Co/Pt(111) system. It is shown, that, depending on the thickness of the Co films, the magnetic anisotropy as monitored by the Pt magnetism changes from perpendicular to parallel, mimicking the behavior of the Co overlayer. Adsorption of carbon monoxide on very thin films has been found to change the easy magnetization axis. Moreover, the critical film thickness for the flipping of the easy direction of magnetization depends markedly on the growth temperature even in the vicinities of 300 K, where bulk alloying does not occur. A brief annealing to similar to375 K of a parallel Co film suffices to reverse its easy direction to perpendicular. By analyzing the magnetic crystal truncation rods of the Pt surface, it is concluded that the change of anisotropy is due to site exchange between interfacial Co and Pt atoms. The site exchange which affects up to 4% of the interface atoms has been related to previous scanning tunneling microscopy findings on the same system. Comparison of magneto-optical and x-ray magnetic diffraction measurements on the same film show that the responses to the externally applied field are not identical. A possible explanation is suggested.

  • Observations of the very young Type Ia Supernova 2019np with early-excess emission
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 514:3, s. 3541-3558
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early-time radiative signals from Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important constraints on the explosion mechanism and the progenitor system. We present observations and analysis of SN 2019np, a nearby SN Ia discovered within 1–2 days after the explosion. Follow-up observations were conducted in optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared bands, covering the phases from ∼−16.7 d to ∼+ 367.8 d relative to its B-band peak luminosity. The photometric and spectral evolutions of SN 2019np resemble the average behaviour of normal SNe Ia. The absolute B-band peak magnitude and the post-peak decline rate are Mmax(B) = −19.52 ± 0.47 mag and Δm15(B) = 1.04 ± 0.04 mag, respectively. No Hydrogen line has been detected in the nebular-phase spectra of SN 2019np. Assuming that the 56Ni powering the light curve is centrally located, we find that the bolometric light curve of SN 2019np shows a flux excess up to 5.0 per cent in the early phase compared to the radiative diffusion model. Such an extra radiation perhaps suggests the presence of an additional energy source beyond the radioactive decay of central nickel. Comparing the observed colour evolution with that predicted by different models, such as interactions of SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM)/companion star, a double-detonation explosion from a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD) and surface 56Ni mixing, we propose that the nickel mixing is more favoured for SN 2019np.

  • Survival and risk of breast cancer recurrence after breast reconstruction with deep inferior epigastric perforator flap
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0007-1323 .- 1365-2168. ; 105:11, s. 1446-1453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Women who undergo autologous breast reconstruction have been reported to have an increased risk of breast cancer recurrence compared with those who have mastectomy alone. It has been suggested that more extensive surgery possibly activates dormant micrometastases. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether delayed unilateral deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap reconstruction after mastectomy increases the risk of breast cancer recurrence or affects mortality among women previously treated for breast cancer. Methods: This was a matched retrospective cohort study including women with a previous unilateral invasive breast cancer who received a delayed DIEP flap breast reconstruction and a control cohort of individually matched women with unilateral breast cancer who underwent mastectomy but no autologous breast reconstruction. Matching criteria comprised: year of diagnosis (+/–3 years), age at diagnosis (+/–5 years), type of cancer and demographic region. The primary endpoints were local recurrence or distant metastasis, and overall mortality was a secondary endpoint. Absolute risk of recurrent disease and mortality was analysed, and relative risks were estimated using Cox proportional hazards analysis. Results: There were 225 women in the DIEP cohort and 450 in the no-DIEP cohort. The median follow-up time was 125 months. There was no difference in absolute risk of recurrence between the cohorts. The hazard ratio for breast cancer recurrence in DIEP versus no-DIEP cohorts was 0·76 (95 per cent c.i. 0·47 to 1·21). Conclusion: There is no increased risk in breast cancer recurrence after delayed DIEP flap reconstruction compared with mastectomy alone.
