  • Knowledge and attitudes regarding non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and preferences for risk information among high school students in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Genetic Counseling. - New York : Human Sciences Press. - 1059-7700 .- 1573-3599. ; 26:3, s. 447-454
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) was recently introduced for prenatal testing of genetic disorders. Cell-free fetal DNA is present in maternal blood during pregnancy and enables detection of fetal chromosome aberrations in a maternal blood sample. The public perspective to this new, simple method has not been illuminated. The views of young people (i.e. future parents) are important to develop suitable counseling strategies regarding prenatal testing. The aim was to explore Swedish high school students' attitudes, knowledge and preferences regarding NIPT. A questionnaire was completed by 305 students recruited from one high school in Stockholm, November and December 2014. Most students (80 %) considered prenatal testing as good. The majority (65 %) was positive or very positive towards NIPT and 62 % stated that they potentially would like to undergo the test if they or their partner was pregnant. The vast majority (94 %) requested further information about NIPT. Most students (61 %) preferred verbal information, whereas 20 % preferred information via the Internet. The majority of the high school students was positive towards prenatal testing and most was positive towards NIPT. Further, information was requested by the vast majority before making a decision about NIPT. Most of the students preferred verbal information and to a lesser extent information via the Internet. The attitudes, knowledge and preferences for risk information concerning NIPT in young adults are important, in order to increase knowledge on how to educate and inform future parents.

  • Reporting of complex interventions in clinical trials : Development of a taxonomy to classify and describe fall-prevention interventions
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Trials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1745-6215. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interventions for preventing falls in older people often involve several components, multidisciplinary teams, and implementation in a variety of settings. We have developed a classification system (taxonomy) to describe interventions used to prevent falls in older people, with the aim of improving the design and reporting of clinical trials of fall-prevention interventions, and synthesis of evidence from these trials. Methods: Thirty three international experts in falls prevention and health services research participated in a series of meetings to develop consensus. Robust techniques were used including literature reviews, expert presentations, and structured consensus workshops moderated by experienced facilitators. The taxonomy was refined using an international test panel of five health care practitioners. We assessed the chance corrected agreement of the final version by comparing taxonomy completion for 10 randomly selected published papers describing a variety of fall-prevention interventions. Results: The taxonomy consists of four domains, summarized as the "Approach", "Base", "Components" and "Descriptors" of an intervention. Sub-domains include; where participants are identified; the theoretical approach of the intervention; clinical targeting criteria; details on assessments; descriptions of the nature and intensity of interventions. Chance corrected agreement of the final version of the taxonomy was good to excellent for all items. Further independent evaluation of the taxonomy is required. Conclusions: The taxonomy is a useful instrument for characterizing a broad range of interventions used in falls prevention. Investigators are encouraged to use the taxonomy to report their interventions.

  • Psychometric properties of the general self-efficacy scale in Parkinson's disease
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0001-6314 .- 1600-0404. ; 132:2, s. 89-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE) in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). More specifically, we investigated data completeness, scaling assumptions, targeting, reliability, and construct validity.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involves data available from two different projects that included people diagnosed with PD for at least 1 year, yielding two samples (1 and 2). The combined total sample (N = 346; 60% men) had a mean (SD) age and PD duration of 71 (8.9) and 9 years (6.3), respectively. Both samples received a self-administered survey by mail, which was administered twice in sample 2. Additional data (e.g., clinical assessments) were available for Sample 1.RESULTS: Total GSE scores were computable for 336 participants (97%). Corrected item-total correlations exceeded 0.4. Principal component analyses identified one component (the eigenvalue of the first component extracted was 6.9), explaining 69% of the total variance. Floor and ceiling effects were < 6%. Internal consistency (coefficient alpha) was 0.95. Analyses of test-retest reliability yielded (ICC) values from 0.69 to 0.80. The highest value refers to those (n = 47) with identical self-ratings of mobility (in the on condition) at both tests; the standard error of measurement was 3.1 points. Construct validity was further supported by correlations in accordance with a priori expectations.CONCLUSIONS: This study provides support for the validity and reliability of GSE scores in people with PD; the GSE can thus serve as a valuable outcome measurement in clinical practice and research.

  • Perceived opportunities for physical activity and willingness to be more active in older adults with different physical activity levels
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI AG. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 18:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined equity in physical activity (PA) by investigating whether perceived opportunity for PA was associated with willingness to be more active. Among community residents (75, 80, or 85 years old, n = 962) perceived opportunity for PA (poor and good), willingness to be more active (not at all, a bit, and a lot), and level of PA (low, moderate, and high) were assessed via questionnaires. Multinomial logistic regression showed that physical activity moderated the association between poor opportunity and willingness to increase PA. Among those with moderate PA, poor opportunity for PA increased the odds of willingness to be a lot more active (multinomial odds ratio, mOR 3.90, 95% confidence interval 2.21–6.87) than not wanting to be more active compared to those perceiving good opportunities. Associations were similar at high PA levels (p < 0.001), but were not found at low PA levels. Those with moderate or high PA wish to increase their activity particularly when the perceived opportunities for activity are not optimal. Among those with low PA, perceived opportunities are not associated with a perceived need to increase physical activity. Increasing equity in physical activity in old age requires provision of support and opportunities at every level of physical activity.

  • Environmental barriers and housing accessibility problems for people with Parkinson’s disease : A three-year perspective
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 30:5, s. 661-672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Although housing accessibility is associated with important health outcomes in other populations, few studies have addressed this in a Parkinson’s disease population. Aim: To determine the most severe environmental barriers in terms of housing accessibility problems and how these evolved over 3 years among people with Parkinson’s disease. Material and Methods: 138 participants were included (men = 67%; mean age = 68 years). The most severe environmental barrier were identified by the Housing Enabler instrument and ranked in descending order. The paired t-test was used to analyse changes in accessibility problems over time. Results: The top 10 barriers remained largely unchanged over 3 years, but with notable changes in order and magnitude. ‘No grab bar in hygiene area’ and ‘Stairs only route’ were top-ranked in generating accessibility problems at baseline but decreased significantly (p = 0.041; p = 0.002) at follow-up. ‘Difficulties to reach refuse bin’ was top-ranked at follow-up, with a significant increase (p < 0.001) of related accessibility problems. Conclusions and Significance: The new knowledge about how accessibility problems evolve over time could be used by occupational therapists to recommend more effective housing adaptations taking the progressive nature of Parkinson’s disease into account. On societal level, the results could be used to address accessibility problems systematically.

  • Psychometric properties of the external Housing-Related Control Belief Questionnaire among people with Parkinson’s disease
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Aging clinical and experimental research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1594-0667 .- 1720-8319. ; 32:12, s. 2639-2647
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Housing-related control beliefs are associated with aspects of health among older people in general. Research on Parkinson’s disease (PD) focusing on perceptions of the home are rare and instruments capturing perceived aspects of home have seldom been used. Aims: To evaluate psychometric properties of the external Housing-related Control Beliefs Questionnaire (HCQ) among people with PD. Methods: The external HCQ were administrated to 245 participants with PD, (mean age = 69.9 years; mean PD duration = 9.7 years). External HCQ has 16-items, with five response options. The psychometric properties evaluated were data quality, structural validity (factor analysis), floor and ceiling effects, corrected item total correlations, internal consistency and construct validity (testing correlations with relevant constructs according to pre-defined hypotheses). Results: Data quality was high. Structural validity showed a unidimensional construct with removal of two items. Homogeneity was questionable, but strengthened after the removal of the two items. For the 14-item version internal consistency was α = 0.78 and SEM 4.47. Corrected item total correlation ranged between 0.31 and 0.54 and no floor or ceiling effects. Significant correlations with relevant constructs supported the construct validity. Conclusions: Taken together, the psychometric results suggest a 14-item version of the external HCQ to be sufficiently reliable and valid for use in the PD population. The results pave the way for further studies, using the HCQ to analyse how perceptions of control of the home may be associated with health among people ageing with PD.

  • The meaning of home questionnaire revisited : Psychometric analyses among people with Parkinson's disease reveals new dimensions
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 15:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Research addressing perceptions of housing in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) is rare, and existing instruments capturing perceived aspects of housing are rarely used. Perceived housing comprises of several domains and is associated with health in general older populations. One such domain is meaning of home, captured by the Meaning of Home Questionnaire (MOH). The aim of this study was to evaluate psychometric properties of the MOH among people with PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MOH was administrated to 245 participants with PD (mean age = 69.9 years; mean PD duration = 9.7 years). The instrument consisted of four sub-scales with 28 items, each with 11 response options (strongly disagree = 0; strongly agree = 10). We evaluated data quality, structural validity (factor analysis), construct validity (i.e., testing correlations with relevant constructs according to pre-defined hypotheses), corrected item total correlations, floor and ceiling effects and internal consistency. RESULTS: The data quality was high (0-1.2% missing data). The exploratory factor analysis suggested removal of five items and revealed three new factors; "My home is my castle", "My home is my prison" and "My home is my social hub". The 23-item MOH showed statistically significant correlations with life satisfaction, usability and ADL dependence, while not correlated with number of environmental barriers. These findings were largely as hypothesised, thus supporting construct validity (both convergent and discriminant). The corrected item total correlations were >0.3 for all items and the internal consistency was >0.70 for all sub-scales. No floor or ceiling effects were reported except for the sub-scale "My home is my castle" (ceiling effect = 15.6%). CONCLUSIONS: The 23-item MOH version with three new sub-scales is sufficiently reliable and valid for use in PD populations. This paves the way for further research of meaning of home among people with PD, using the 23-item MOH version.

  • The association between the home environment and physical activity in community-dwelling older adults
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Aging clinical and experimental research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1720-8319. ; 26:4, s. 377-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical activity (PA) decreases with increasing age despite the fact that PA exerts beneficial effects on many age-related diseases and conditions. Consequently, there is an interest in modifiable factors that may influence PA among older persons. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between PA and the home environment in wellfunctioning older community-dwelling persons. Method This study used a person-environment (P-E) fit perspective to the home environment, operationalized by means of assessment of functional limitations in 81 community- dwelling persons (median age 79 years) as well as environmental barriers in their home environments and the nearby exterior surroundings. The interaction between functional limitations and environmental barriers generated a score expressing the magnitude of P-E fit problems in their home environment. PA was rated with a questionnaire covering household-related and recreational activities. Results We found a significant association between PA and the magnitude of P-E fit problems that explained 3.9 % of the variance of PA. The number of environmental barriers per se was not significantly associated with PA, while functional limitations explained 6.8 % of the variance of PA. Conclusion In well-functioning older persons living in the community environmental aspects of housing demonstrated a weak association with PA.

  • Towards an instrument targeting mobility-related participation: Nordic cross-national reliability
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1651-2081 .- 1650-1977. ; 40:9, s. 766-772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate test-retest reliability and internal consistency of a new instrument for evaluation of mobility device interventions. Material and methods: The instrument comprised 4 scales and one summed index. Two test-retest interviews involved 147 mobility device users (mean age 60 years) with a broad range of functional limitations, living at home. Results: For 2 scales and the summed index the reliability was substantial or almost perfect (K 0.71/ K-W 0.76/intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.93; confidence interval = 0.90-0.95). The reliability of one scale was moderate (K-w 0.4 1), but after reduction of grades and combination with another scale, it was substantial (K-w 0.66). The reliability of the fourth scale was moderate (K-w 0.55). The internal consistency of 3 scales varied from a 0.63 to 0.76. Conclusion: Even thou,,h the test-retest reliability of all but one of the scales of the new instrument was substantial to almost perfect, this study demonstrated that revision is required. The challenges identified were probably due to the highly complex relationship between outdoor participation while using mobility devices and accessibility to the outdoor physical environment. Thus. based on the results of this study the instrument will be revised and subsequently launched as the "Nordic mobility-related participation outcome evaluation of assistive device intervention" (NOMO instrument). More research on the concept of mobility-related participation and the psychometric qualities of the instrument is required.

  • Older people's use of powered wheelchairs for activity and participation
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1651-2081 .- 1650-1977. ; 36:2, s. 70-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate outcomes of older people's use of powered wheelchairs and risk factors for negative outcomes. Design: The study was a cross-sectional interview-study including 111 powered wheelchair users over 65 years of age. Results: All participants used their powered wheelchair in the summer; nearly all users regarded it as important and found that it gave them independence. The wheelchair made activity and participation possible for the users. The most frequent activity in the summer was going for a ride, and in the winter it was shopping. However, some could not use the wheelchair for visits, and supplementary travel modes are called for. Users who could not walk at all or who could not transfer without assistance were more likely not to be able to carry out prioritized activities. Furthermore, other risk factors for negative outcomes and need for further research were identified. Conclusion: The use of powered wheelchairs is a relevant societal intervention in relation to older people with limited walking ability in order to make activity and participation possible. It is likely that a larger proportion of older people could benefit from this intervention, in particular if current practices are improved taking activity and participation outcomes into consideration.

  • Reliability test-retest of the Nordic Assisted Mobility Evaluation (NAME 1.0)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Challenges for Assistive Technology. - 9781586037918 ; , s. 85-87
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper describes preliminary results from the test-retest of the NAME 1.0. Four scales were tested: Mobility-related participation frequency; Mobility ease/difficulty; Mobility dependence; Extent of assistance in mobility. The test was conducted in the five Nordic countries. In all 147 mobility device users took part in the study, mean age 60 years (range 19 - 93). Each participant was interviewed twice by means of the NAME 1.0 with seven days' interval (SD 4) by interviewers trained in using the instrument. The reliability of two scales was good, and the reliability of one scale became good after it had been regrouped into fewer grades. The reliablity of the Mobility ease/difficulty scale was only moderate. Possible reasons for this are discussed. There is a need for further research.

  • Report from the NUH-project: Udvikling af instrument til undersogelse af nytte og effekt af mobilitetshjaelpemidler - The Nordic Assisted Mobility Evaluation (NAME)
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report covers the project period from 1.4.2003 to 31.08.2005. Project organisation, administration including the accounts, and the work carried out are reported. Besides, suggestions for copyright are put forward together with plans for dissemination activities and need for further research. The NAME was developed by the project group, consisting of all partners who have all contributed in an excellent way and have besides spent far more resources than planned for, financed by various sources. The work has been accomplished by meetings in the project group and a smaller working group; by literature reviews; meetings with mobility device user reference groups, groups of assistive technology experts, and researchers; and by accomplishment of extensive pilot-testing, revisions and translations of the instrument. During the course of the project a number of major challenges have been faced requiring careful consideration and communication in the project group to an extent not possible to plan for in advance. The result of the project is the NAME 1.0 in the five Nordic language versions. It is an instrument for evaluation of mobility and mobility-related outcomes of mobility device interventions consisting of a baseline interview questionnaire, a follow-up interview questionnaire, and a manual. The instrument has reached sufficient face and content validity, and feasibility. The project group recommends that the NAME 1.0 should be available for use, but would like to emphasise that considerable further testing and development is needed.

  • Satisfaction with rollators among community-living users: a follow-up study.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0963-8288 .- 1464-5165. ; 25:7, s. 343-353
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Rollators are used in order to make mobility possible for people with restricted walking ability. The use of rollators is increasing, but little is known about outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate users' satisfaction with rollators. Method: A follow-up study was carried out in seven Danish municipalities. One month after they got their device, 89 users of rollators were interviewed by means of the QUEST 1.0. Three months after the first interview a second interview took place and data from the 64 users available for follow-up were analysed. Results: The users were satisfied with their rollators, and the frequency of use was high. However, many of the users were frail, and some of them were not fully satisfied in all respects. Women especially, users living alone and first time users were likely to be dissatisfied. The main problem identified was handling the rollator, and for several users the physical environment caused accessibility problems. Conclusions: Rollators are valuable for the users and a relevant societal intervention. However, a better match between person and technology, enhanced user training and follow-up can improve the outcome of the intervention. Furthermore, better rollator design is called for, and buses and the outdoor environment need to be made more accessible.

  • Self-reported versus professionally assessed functional limitations in community-dwelling very old individuals.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Rehabilitation Research. - 1473-5660. ; 35:4, s. 299-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between self-reported and professionally assessed functional limitations in community-dwelling very old individuals. In total, 306 single-living adults aged 81-90 years were included in this cross-sectional study. The main outcome measure was the presence and absence of self-reported and professionally assessed functional limitations. A significant correlation was found between the total number of self-reported and professionally assessed functional limitations in the total sample (intraclass correlation=0.65) as well as in subgroups with respect to sex, age, and depression. When item-wise differences in the two assessments were assessed, the results showed significant differences for nine of the 15 functional limitations. In general, the participants reported more functional limitations as present than the professional did. In conclusion, research on self-reported and professionally assessed functional limitations contributes toward the understanding of how different modes of data collection influence the results. In this study, functional limitations were examined on a broad basis, including physical as well as cognitive and perceptual limitations. Once the assessments of self-reporting have been refined, we will have a more nuanced picture of functional limitations, incorporating self-report as well as professional assessments.
