  • Axelsson, Tobias, 1979- (författare)
  • När män möts som pappor : Fadrandets politik och praktik i det jämställda och pappavänliga Sverige
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis analyses how fathering is done and how fathers are constructed through the separate organising of men as fathers in meeting places for fathers on parental leave in Sweden. The study is located within the Swedish gender regime, characterised by its dual-earner/dual-carer model, progressive parenthood and daddy politics, and universally-oriented parenting support, making it a relatively gender-equal and father-friendly society.Theoretically and methodologically, the thesis draws on a feminist perspective. It uses ‘doing gender’ theory, and is informed by critical realism. The material is based on 25 observations at two fathering spaces, seven semi-structured interviews with fathers, and six policy documents on parenting support. Qualitative content analysis is used to analyse the material. The findings show: first, meeting places for fathers on parental leave can be understood as fathering spaces. Second, these fathering spaces are child-oriented settings and constitute somewhat of an exception within gender-neutral gender regimes. Third, fathering spaces function as transitional sites in which fathers manage different aspects of responsibility and relations to their own selves, to children, to mothers, and to other fathers. Fourth, three approaches to separate organising of men as fathers are identified: a) anti-separate; b) pro-separate; and c) gender paradoxical. The identified arguments for separate organising can be located along two parallel continua: one that stretches from individual to collective argumentation, and another that stretches from general to gender-specific argumentation. The thesis contributes to research on childcare and masculinities, and fathers’ experiences of parental leave, and to knowledge about separate organising of men as fathers. It also contributes to research and policy debates on daddy politics and parenting support by critically discussing fathering in terms of autonomy, dependence, and masculinity politics.

  • Feminism and the Power of Love : Interdisciplinary interventions
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The power of love has become a renewed matter of feminist and non-feminist attention in the 21st century’s theory debates. What is this power? Is it a form of domination? Or is it a liberating force in our contemporary societies?Within Feminism and the Power of Love lies the central argument that, although love is a crucial site of gendered power asymmetries, it is also a vital source of human empowerment that we cannot live without. Instead of emphasizing "either-or", this enlightening title puts the dualities and contradictions of love center stage. Indeed, by offering various theoretical perspectives on what makes love such a central value and motivator for people, this title will increase one’s understanding as to why love can keep people in its grip - even when practiced in ways that deplete and oppress. In light of such analyses, the contributions within Feminism and the Power of Love present new perspectives on the conditions and characteristics of non-oppressive, mutually enhancing ways of loving.Bridging the gap between Feminist Affect Studies and Feminist Love Studies, this book will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including postdoctoral researchers, interested in fields such as women’s and gender studies, sociology, political science, philosophy, cultural studies and sexuality studies.

  • GEXcel Work in Progress Report Volume IX : Proceedings from GEXcel theme 10: Love in our time - a question for feminism. Conference of workshops 2-4 December 2010
  • 2011
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work-in-progress report comprises short summaries of most of the presentations given at the GEXcel research conference, which took place at Örebro University 2-4 December, 2010. The conference rounded off the main activities of GEXcel’s Research Theme 10, Love in Our Time – A Question for Feminism, which ran from January through to December 2010. The conference was organised in a workshop format around three subthemes: 1) Gendered Interests in Sexual Love, Care Practices and Erotic Agency, 2) Temporal Dimensions of Loving and Love Activities, and 3) Love as a Strong Force in the Intersection Between Politics and Religion and as a Useful Key Concept for a New Political Theory of Global Revolution. Each workshop/subtheme gathered around ten senior and junior scholars from many different countries and parts of the world. This report is of a work-in-progress character, and thus the texts presented here are to be elaborated further. The reader should also be aware that due to the fact that this is a report of working papers, the language of the papers contributed by non-native English speakers has not been specifically revised.

  • Does sex matter to democracy?
  • 1988
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Political Studies. - : Wiley. - 0080-6757 .- 1467-9477. ; 11:4, s. 299-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In order to isolate, theoretically, the vital mechanisms that constrain women as citizens in Western, democratic societies, it is necessary to go beyond explanations in terms of work, into sexuality However, it is not the practice of sexual coercion which, though a serious wrong, is fundamental in subordinating women in the formally free society; it is rather the freely given—and taken—love. Furthermore, if scrutinizing pre-democratic, anti-feminist arguments can help to reveal the situation today, it is the utilitarian view of women's sexual resources, rather than arguments about sexually differentiated—and inferior female—nature, which is crucial. Secondly, the concept of ‘difference’, now so popular among feminist writers, is important, especially when used empirically to avoid oversimplifying unity thinking about each of the sex/gender groups. But it is not tit for conceiving the power transactions going on in the socio-sexual process Furthermore. I suppose that one of the most important tasks of feminism is to balance the weights of (different) individuality and collectivity to mutually developmental values. Thirdly, women want more than ‘equal chances’, something other than ‘equal results’, and the ‘different but equally valuable’ must, to be women-worthy, be defined by women themselves. In a democratic society, if women are to be full and equal members, as leaders and led, then women and men have to be openly accepted as two fundamental, interested parties in society Finally, women should not claim this citizen status first and foremost as mothers, but simply as women. i e. as female, social ‘incarnate subjects’.

  • Dr. Anna G. Jonasdottir : Acceptance Speech for Honorary Doctorate from Faculty of Political Science, University of Iceland. Given 18th of June, 2015
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Stjornmal og Stjornsysla / The Icelandic Review of Politics & Administration. - Reykjavik, Iceland : Institute of Public Administration and Politics of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Iceland. - 1670-6803 .- 1670-679X. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On June 18th the Faculty of Political Science, University of Iceland, celebrated 100 years of women’s‘ voting rights in Iceland with a special conference, Power and democracy 100 years later. In association with the conference Dr. Anna Guðrún Jónasdóttir, Professor emerita at the University of Örebro, Sweden, was awarded an honorary doctorate at the Faculty of Political Science. Anna Guðrún was the first Icelandic woman to complete a doctorate in political science, in 1991, and also the first to embark on an advanced academic career in political science and gender studies. It is therefore highly appropriate that Anna Guðrún should be awarded the first honorary doctorate at the Faculty of Political Science, where these disciplines are located. Her research covers a broad spectrum, including political science, sociology, economic history, psychology and gender studies. She was among the first to deal in a theoretical manner with gender, power and politics, which was considered rather provocative at the start of her academic career in the early 1970s. She is a pioneer in intertwining political research and gender studies and her most important research is in the field of power and personal gender relations. Anna Guðrún moved to Sweden at an early age but has kept in touch with the Icelandic research community. Below we publish her acceptance speech on the occasion when the honorary doctorate was awarded. It reflects clearly how her ideas have developed and her intimate sense for how personal and political factors bring politics and gender studies closer at the same time as she deepens and broadens both of their subjects.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Successively through the 1990s and specifically since the millennium shift a growing interest in the subject of love can be seen in various scholarly disciplines and interdisciplinary research areas, among them areas where love as a topic would hardly be expected. The aim of this chapter is to investigate the changes in attention paid to the subject of love among both non-feminist and feminist scholars. The "love question" is addressed in three ways. First, I support the claim, launched in the chapter title, for Love Studies as a new field, summarizing briefly my own work on the subject. Secondly, I provide an account of the former reluctance to deal with love and how that attitude is changing. Third, I propose a preliminary answer to the main questions raised in the chapter about what the current interest in love signals and its implications for feminism.
