  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Språkets speglingar. Festskrift till Birger Bergh. - 9187976137

    • Our Nordic Sappho. Classical and modern features in Sophia Elisabeth Brenner's poetry. This essay explores how Mrs. Brenner made use of classical mythology and history when composing poems in Swedish. For instance, when celebrating King Charles XII's victory at Narva in 1700, she made allusions to Julius Caesar, and in her introductory poem to a guide in obstetrics she brought in Juno and Pliny the Elder. It is most interesting to notice that when she wrote a poem for a simplified version of the guide, intended for the common people, the classical figures were replaced by Biblical ones. Her choice was obviously dictated by principles of decorum. Brenner was not an unqualified admirer of antiquity, and she often claimed that contemporary Sweden had surpassed the ancients. Emphasising the present at the expense of the ancient past may have its roots in the tradition of typological interpretation. That method had originally been used to show that figures and events in the Old Testament (such as Adam or the exodus from Egypt) prefigured events in the New Testament (Christ was the second Adam; the exodus prefigured the salvation). In a similar way, contemporary Swedes could be pictured as surpassing ancient figures.

  • Ingår i: Eranos. - 0013-9947. ; 94, s. 21-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most puzzling passages of Vergil's Aeneid is the last lines of book VI where Aeneas and the Sibyl leave the underworld through the gate of ivory, the gate of false dreams. "Few passages of the Aeneid have given rise to more controversies and divergence of judgement" (Brooks Otis). In this article we analyse the linguistic context and propose a new solution to the problem.

  • A Component based Approach to Measuring Text Complexity
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present results from assessing text complexity based on a factorisation of text property measures into components. The components are evaluated by investigating their ability to classify texts belonging to different genres. Our results show that the text complexity components correctly classify texts belonging to specific genres, given that the genres adhere to certain textual conventions. We also propose a radar chart visualisation to communicate component based text complexity.

  • Hypoxia increases LDL oxidation and expression of 15-lipoxygenase-2 in human macrophages
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. ; 24:11, s. 2040-2045
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Macrophage-mediated oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) by enzymes, such as the lipoxygenases, is considered of major importance for the formation of oxidized LDL during atherogenesis. Macrophages have been identified in hypoxic areas in atherosclerotic plaques. METHODS AND RESULTS: To investigate the role of hypoxia in macrophage-mediated LDL oxidation, we incubated human monocyte-derived macrophages with LDL under normoxic (21% O2) or hypoxic (0% O2) conditions. The results showed that hypoxic macrophages oxidized LDL to a significantly higher extent than normoxic cells. Interestingly, the mRNA and protein expression of 15-lipoxygenase-2 (15-LOX-2) as well as the activity of this enzyme are elevated in macrophages incubated at hypoxia. Both the unspliced 15-LOX-2 and the spliced variant 15-LOX-2sv-a are found in macrophages. In addition, 15-LOX-2 was identified in carotid plaques in some macrophage-rich areas but was only expressed at low levels in nondiseased arteries. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, these observations show for the first time that 15-LOX-2 is expressed in hypoxic macrophages and in atherosclerotic plaques and suggest that 15-LOX-2 may be one of the factors involved in macrophage-mediated LDL oxidation at hypoxia.

  • Analysing Changes in Official Use of the Design Concept Using SweCLARIN Resources
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the CLARIN Annual meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show how the tools and language resources developed within the SweClarin infrastructure can be used to investigate changes in the use and understanding of the Swedish related words arkitektur, design, form, and formgivning. Specifically, we compare their use in two governmental public reports on design, one from 1999 and the other from 2015. We test the hypothesis that their meaning has developed in a way that blurs distinctions that may be important to stakeholders in the respective fields.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Selected papers from the CLARIN Annual Conference 2022. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9789180752541
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate changes in the use of four Swedish words from the fields of design and archi- tecture. It has been suggested that their meanings have been blurred, especially in governmental reports and policy documents, so that distinctions between them that are important to stakeholders in the respective fields are lost. Specifically, we compare usage in two governmental public reports on design, one from 1999 and the other from 2015, and additionally in opinion responses to the 2015 report. Our approach is to contextualise occurrences of the words in different representations of the texts using word embeddings, topic modelling and sentiment analysis. Tools and language resources developed within the SweClarin infrastructure have been crucial for the implementation of the study.

  • Customizing Interaction for Natural Language Interfaces
  • 1996
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Habitability and robustness have been noted as important qualities of natural-language interfaces. In this paper we discuss how these requirements can be met, in particular as regards the system's ability to support a coherent and smooth dialogue. The discussion is based on current work on customizing a dialogue system for three different applications.   We adopt a sublanguage approach to the problem and propose a method for customization combining bottom-up use of empirical data with a global pragmatic analysis of a given application. Finally, we suggest three design principles that have emerged from our work called the sublanguage principle, the asymmetry principle and the quantity principle.

  • Studying Disability Related Terms with Swe-Clarin Resources
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Swedish, as in other languages, the words used to refer to disabilities and people with disabilities are manifold. Recommendations as to which terms to use have been changed several times over the last hundred years. In this exploratory paper we have used textual resources provided by Swe-Clarin to study such changes quantitatively. We demonstrate that old and new recommendations co-exist for long periods of time, and that usage sometimes converges.

  • Similarity-Based Alignment of Monolingual Corpora for Text Simplification
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: CL4LC 2016 - Computational Linguistics for Linguistic Complexity. - : The COLING 2016 Organizing Committee. - 9784879747099 ; , s. 154-163
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comparable or parallel corpora are beneficial for many NLP tasks.  The automatic collection of corpora enables large-scale resources, even for less-resourced languages, which in turn can be useful for deducing rules and patterns for text rewriting algorithms, a subtask of automatic text simplification. We present two methods for the alignment of Swedish easy-to-read text segments to text segments from a reference corpus.  The first method (M1) was originally developed for the task of text reuse detection, measuring sentence similarity by a modified version of a TF-IDF vector space model. A second method (M2), also accounting for part-of-speech tags, was devel- oped, and the methods were compared.  For evaluation, a crowdsourcing platform was built for human judgement data collection, and preliminary results showed that cosine similarity relates better to human ranks than the Dice coefficient. We also saw a tendency that including syntactic context to the TF-IDF vector space model is beneficial for this kind of paraphrase alignment task.

  • Ingår i: Förbistringar och förklaringar : festskrift till Anders Piltz. - 9789187976292 ; , s. 25-33
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Drugs prepared from organic and mineral substances have, throughout history, held a central position when it comes to preventing and curing disease. In Galenic medicine, foodstuffs, drugs and deadly substances, or poisons, were all accredited with the potential to affect the constitution of the body. While the Galenic paradigm continued to dominate formal medicine in the Middle Ages, the language used for scientific communication changed from Greek and Syriac to Arabic. This means that our knowledge of most aspects of medieval highly qualified medicine depends on the study of Arabic sources. The preserved Arabic material on pharmacology is extensive, and it is clear that physicians in the Arabo-Islamic cultural sphere have contributed to the knowledge of both single substances and compound preparations.

  • Studying Emerging New Contexts for Museum Digitisations on Pinterest
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Selected Papers from the CLARIN Annual Conference 2020. - : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9789179296094 ; , s. 24-36
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a SweClarin cooperation project we apply topic modelling to the texts found with pins in Pin-terest boards. The data in focus are digitisations of Viking Age finds from the Swedish History Museum and the underlying research question is how they are given new contextual meanings in boards. We illustrate how topic modelling can support interpretation of polysemy and culturally situated meanings. It expands on the employment of topic modelling by accentuating the necessity of interpretation in every step of the process from capturing and cleaning the data, to modelling and visualisation. The paper concludes that the national context of digitisations of Viking Age jewellery in the Swedish History Museum’s collection management system is re-placed by several transnational contexts in which Viking Age jewellery is appreciated for its symbolical meanings and decorative functions in contemporary genres for re-imagining, relivingand performing European pasts and mythologies. The emerging contexts on Pinterest also high-light the business opportunities involved in genres such as reenactment, neo-paganism, lajv and fantasy. The boards are clues to how digitisations serve as prototypes for replicas.

  • Genome-wide association study identifies three new melanoma susceptibility loci
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 43:11, s. 1108-1113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a genome-wide association study for melanoma that was conducted by the GenoMEL Consortium. Our discovery phase included 2,981 individuals with melanoma and 1,982 study-specific control individuals of European ancestry, as well as an additional 6,426 control subjects from French or British populations, all of whom were genotyped for 317,000 or 610,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Our analysis replicated previously known melanoma susceptibility loci. Seven new regions with at least one SNP with P < 10(-5) and further local imputed or genotyped support were selected for replication using two other genome-wide studies (from Australia and Texas, USA). Additional replication came from case-control series from the UK and The Netherlands. Variants at three of the seven loci replicated at P < 10(-3): an SNP in ATM (rs1801516, overall P = 3.4 x 10(-9)), an SNP in MX2 (rs45430, P = 2.9 x 10-9) and an SNP adjacent to CASP8 (rs13016963, P = 8.6 x 10(-10)). A fourth locus near CCND1 remains of potential interest, showing suggestive but inconclusive evidence of replication (rs1485993, overall P = 4.6 x 10(-7) under a fixed-effects model and P = 1.2 x 10(-3) under a random-effects model). These newly associated variants showed no association with nevus or pigmentation phenotypes in a large British case-control series.

    • According to medieval canon law, a marriage could be declared invalid if the consent had been given through force or fear. This ruling was a natural consequence of the insistence on free consent as the only requirement for a valid marriage. It did, however, entail a number of both practical and theoretical problems. It could be difficult to prove force and fear within the family, but also to define what should count as sufficient force and fear to render a marriage non valid. In Roman law, the fictional figure of the ”constant man” was used to determine different degrees of coercion. The constant man standard was however difficult to use in marriage cases that often involved very young people, dependent on those most likely to use force and fear against them In this article, I examine - through the development of papal legislation in force and fear cases and their subsequent commentary - how the constant man standard was reinterpreted during the Middle Ages, and how social reality and the requirement of freedom in spiritual matters redefined the concepts of coercion and consent.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we compare the performance of two BERT-based text classifiers whose task is to classify patients (more precisely, their medical histories) as having or not having implant(s) in their body. One classifier is a fully-supervised BERT classifier. The other one is a semi-supervised GAN-BERT classifier. Both models are compared against a fully-supervised SVM classifier. Since fully-supervised classification is expensive in terms of data annotation, with the experiments presented in this paper, we investigate whether we can achieve a competitive performance with a semi-supervised classifier based only on a small amount of annotated data. Results are promising and show that the semi-supervised classifier has a competitive performance when compared with the fully-supervised classifier. © licensed under CC-BY-NC-4.0.

  • A Method for Iterative Implementation of Dialogue Management
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: <em>IJCAI Workshop on Knowledge and Reasoning in Practical Dialogue Systems</em>, Seattle.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an approach to implementation of dialogue management modules for dialogue systems. The implementation method is divided into two distinct, but correlated, steps; Conceptual design and Framework customisation. Conceptual design and framework customisation are two mutually dependent sides of the same phenomena, where the former is an on-paper activity that results in a design document and the latter results in the actual program code. The method is iterative and conforms with software development methods, such as, extreme programming, scenario-based design and reusable object-oriented software development. In the paper, this is further elaborated and how it relates to dialogue systems development.

    • This paper presents an approach to the implementation of modules for dialogue systems. The implementation method is divided into two distinct, but correlated, steps; Conceptual design and Framework customisation. Conceptual design and framework customisation are two mutually dependent sides of the same phenomena, where the former is an on-paper activity that results in a design document and the latter results in the actual implementation. The method is iterative and applicable in various phases of dialogue system development and also for different dialogue system modules. We also present the development of the dialogue management module in more detail. The development space for such modules involves issues on modularisation, knowledge representation and interface functionality internally, and between modules. Orthogonal to this are the various types of re-use for framework customisation; tools, framework template and code patterns. Taken together they form a scheme which is explored during the implementation process.

    • In this paper we present a development tool for testing dialogue systems. Testing software through the specification is important for software development in general and should be as automated as possible. For dialogue systems, the corpus can be seen as one part of the specification and the dialogue system should be tested on available corpora on each new build. The testing tool is inspired from work on agile software development methods, test driven development and unit testing, and can be used in two modes and during various phases of development.

  • Ingår i: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1600-0404 .- 0001-6314. ; 136:3, s. 187-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) has considerable impact on patients and society. However, long-term studies on PSCI are scarce and may be influenced by assessment methods and selection bias. We aimed to (i) assess the prevalence of long-term PSCI; (ii) compare two common cognitive assessment instruments; and (iii) compare cognitive function of long-term stroke survivors with non-stroke persons.METHODS: Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) were administered to 10-year survivors from a population-based cohort of first-ever stroke patients included in the Lund Stroke Register, Sweden, in 2001-2002. PSCI was defined as MMSE<27 and/or MoCA<25 and severe cognitive impairment as MMSE<23. Age- and sex-matched non-stroke control subjects who had performed MMSE (but not MoCA) were recruited from the longitudinal population study "Good Ageing in Skåne." The odds of having cognitive impairment for stroke survivors compared to controls were examined with logistic regression analyses adjusting for education.RESULTS: Of 145 stroke survivors after 10 years, 127 participated. MMSE showed PSCI in 46%, whereas MoCA displayed PSCI in 61%. Among the stroke survivors with MoCA<25, 35% had MMSE≥27 (P<.001). The odds of having severe cognitive impairment defined as MMSE<23 were higher among the stroke survivors compared to 354 controls (education-adjusted; OR=2.5; P=.004).CONCLUSIONS: Post-stroke cognitive impairment was prevalent among 10-year stroke survivors, and the odds of having severe cognitive impairment were higher among the stroke survivors compared to non-stroke persons. The burden of long-term PSCI might have been underestimated previously, and MoCA may be more suitable than MMSE to detect long-term PSCI.

  • Explaining prevalence, diversity and host specificity in a community of avian haemosporidian parasites

    • Many hypotheses attempt to explain parasite–host associations, but rarely are they examined together in a single community. For hosts, key traits are the proportion of infected individuals (prevalence) and the diversity of parasites infecting them. A key parasite trait is host specificity, ranging from specialists infecting one or a few closely related species to generalists infecting many species. We tested 10 hypotheses to explain host-parasite associations; five ‘host-centric’ (e.g. prevalence is related to host abundance) and five ‘parasite-centric’ (e.g. parasite abundance is related to host specificity). We analyzed a community of 67 locally transmitted avian haemosporidian parasite lineages (genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus or Leucocytozoon), sampled from 2726 birds (64 species) in southern Sweden. Among host-centric hypotheses, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon prevalence and Haemoproteus diversity were related to host habitat preferences, whereas there were no relationships with host abundance or body mass. Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon prevalences were more similar among closely related than among distantly related host species. Haemoproteus prevalence and diversity were lower in host species with few close relatives (‘evolutionarily distinct’ hosts). Among parasite-centric hypotheses, most lineages, even relative generalists, infected closely related host species more often than expected by chance. However, the host species of Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon lineages overlapped less among lineages than expected by chance. Specialists did not reach higher prevalences than generalists on single host species. However, the abundance of Haemoproteus lineages was related to host specificity with generalists more common than specialists; this was driven by three closely related generalists. Host specificity of parasites was unrelated to the abundance or evolutionarily distinctiveness of their hosts. Parasite communities are likely structured by many factors and cannot be explained by hypotheses focusing solely on hosts or parasites. However, we found consistent effects of host phylogenetic relationships, plausibly a result of evolutionarily conserved host immune systems limiting parasite distributions.

  • An Exploratory Study on Genre Classification using Readability Features
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Sixth Swedish Language Technology Conference (SLTC).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a preliminary study that explores whether text features used for readability assessment are reliable genre-revealing features. We empirically explore the difference between genre and domain. We carry out two sets of experiments with both supervised and unsupervised methods. Findings on the Swedish national corpus (the SUC) show that readability cues are good indicators of genre variation.

  • Classifying easy-to-read texts without parsing
  • 2014

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Document classification using automated linguistic analysis and machine learning (ML) has been shown to be a viable road forward for readability assessment. The best models can be trained to decide if a text is easy to read or not with very high accuracy, e.g. a model using 117 parameters from shallow, lexical, morphological and syntactic analyses achieves 98,9% accuracy. In this paper we compare models created by parameter optimization over subsets of that total model to find out to which extent different high-performing models tend to consist of the same parameters and if it is possible to find models that only use features not requiring parsing. We used a genetic algorithm to systematically optimize parameter sets of fixed sizes using accuracy of a Support Vector Machine classi- fier as fitness function. Our results show that it is possible to find models almost as good as the currently best models while omitting parsing based features.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies have shown that modern methods of readability assessment, using automated linguistic analysis and machine learning (ML), is a viable road forward for readability classification and ranking. In this paper we present a study of different levels of analysis and a large number of features and how they affect an ML-system’s accuracy when it comes to readability assessment. We test a large number of features proposed for different languages (mainly English) and evaluate their usefulness for readability assessment for Swedish as well as comparing their performance to that of established metrics. We find that the best performing features are language models based on part-of-speech and dependency type.
