  • Facilitating Mobile Music Sharing and Social Interaction with Push!Music
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 40th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - Los Alamitos, Calif. : IEEE Computer Society Washington. - 1530-1605. - 0769527558 ; , s. 87-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Push!Music is a novel mobile music listening and sharing system, where users automatically receive songs that have autonomously recommended themselves from nearby players depending on similar listening behaviour and music history. Push!Music also enables users to wirelessly send songs between each other as personal recommendations. We conducted a two-week preliminary user study of Push!Music, where a group of five friends used the application in their everyday life. We learned for example that the shared music in Push!Music became a start for social interaction and that received songs in general were highly appreciated and could be looked upon as 'treats'.

  • When media gets wise: Collaborative filtering with mobile media agents
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces, Proceedings IUI. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 1595932879
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a model where media (e.g. music files) are autonomous entities that carry their own individual information. Our goal is to turn such files into autonomous, rule-following agents capable of building their own identities from interactions with other agents and users, We are exploring how collaborative filtering-like behaviour could emerge out of large ensembles of interacting agents, which are distributed over mobile devices in social networks. We have implemented a first version of the model in the form of a music player application for mobile devices, called Push!Music. This system takes advantage of active recommendations as well as implicit user activity to build a profile for each media file.

  • What is the word for 'Engineering' in Swedish : Swedish students conceptions of their discipline
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Engineering education in Sweden – as in the rest of the world – is experiencing a decline in student interest. There are concerns about the ways in which students think about engineering education, why they join an academic programme in engineering, and why they persist in their studies. In this context the aims of the Nationellt ämnesdidaktiskt Centrum för Teknikutbildning i Studenternas Sammanhang project (CeTUSS) is to investigate the student experience and to identify and support a continuing network of interested researchers, as well as in building capacity for disciplinary pedagogic investigation. The Stepping Stones project brings together these interests in a multi-researcher, multi-institutional study that investigates how tudents and academic staff perceive engineering in Sweden and in Swedish education. The first results of that project are reported here. As this study is situated uniquely in Swedish education, it allows for exploration of “a Swedish perspective” on conceptions of engineering. The Stepping Stones project was based on a model of research capacity-building previously instantiated in the USA and Australia (Fincher & Tenenberg, 2006).

  • Vägen till samverkanssäkrad utbildning. [1] : Metoder och strategier
  • 2016

  • A 15 GHz and a 20 GHz low noise amplifier in 90 nm RF CMOS
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Topical Meeting on Silicon Monolithic Integrated Circuits in RF Systems. - 0780394720 ; , s. 387-390
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The design and measured performance of two low-noise amplifiers at 15 GHz and 20 GHz realized in a 90 nm RF-CMOS process are presented in this work. The 15 GHz LNA achieves a power gain of 12.9 dB, a noise figure of 2.0 dB and an input referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) of -2.3 dBm. The 20 GHz LNA has a power gain of 8.6 dB, a noise figure of 3.0 dB and an IIP3 of 5.6 dBm. Compared to previously reported designs, these two LNAs show lower noise figure at lower power consumption.

  • Effectiveness of a minimal resource fracture liaison service
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Osteoporosis International. - : Springer. - 0937-941X .- 1433-2965. ; 27:11, s. 3165-3175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate if a 2-year intervention with a minimal resource fracture liaison service (FLS) was associated with increased investigation and medical treatment and if treatment was related to reduced re-fracture risk.METHODS: The FLS started in 2013 using existing secretaries (without an FLS coordinator) at the emergency department and orthopaedic wards to identify risk patients. All patients older than 50 years of age with a fractured hip, vertebra, shoulder, wrist or pelvis were followed during 2013-2014 (n = 2713) and compared with their historic counterparts in 2011-2012 (n = 2616) at the same hospital. Re-fractures were X-ray verified. A time-dependent adjusted (for age, sex, previous fracture, index fracture type, prevalent treatment, comorbidity and secondary osteoporosis) Cox model was used.RESULTS: The minimal resource FLS increased the proportion of DXA-investigated patients after fracture from 7.6 to 39.6 % (p < 0.001) and the treatment rate after fracture from 12.6 to 31.8 %, which is well in line with FLS types using the conventional coordinator model. Treated patients had a 51 % lower risk of any re-fracture than untreated patients (HR 0.49, 95 % CI 0.37-0.65 p < 0.001).CONCLUSIONS: We found that our minimal resource FLS was effective in increasing investigation and treatment, in line with conventional coordinator-based services, and that treated patients had a 51 % reduced risk of new fractures, indicating that also non-coordinator based fracture liaison services can improve secondary prevention of fractures.

  • Occurrence and relative risks for non-vertebral fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis compared with the general population: a register-based study from Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Rmd Open. - : BMJ. - 2056-5933. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesTo estimate the incidence of non-vertebral fractures in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) compared with the general population.MethodsNationwide register-based cohort study including patients with AS (n=11 611, 65% men, mean age 48 years), and matched general population controls (n=58 050). Five prespecified fracture outcomes: (1) non-vertebral; (2) fracture of the proximal humerus, distal forearm or hip; (3) proximal humerus; (4) distal forearm and (5) hip) were identified through register linkages with follow-up 2007-2016. We used Poisson regression to calculate incidence rates (IRs), number of fractures per 1000 person-years at risk and IR ratios (IRRs), overall and by sex and age. IRRs were adjusted for history of any prior fracture.ResultsIRs (men/women) for non-vertebral fracture in AS were 11.9 (95% CI 11.0 to 12.9)/14.5 (95% CI 13.1 to 16.1) and in controls 10.0 (95% CI 9.7 to 10.4)/11.8 (95% CI 11.1 to 12.4), IRR (men/women) 1.2 (95% CI 1.1 to 1.3)/1.2 (95% CI 1.1 to 1.4). IRs (men/women) for fractures of the humerus, forearm or hip in AS were 4.0 (95% CI 3.5 to 4.6)/6.3 (95% CI 5.4 to 7.3) and in controls 2.7 (95% CI 2.5 to 2.9)/5.5 (95% CI 5.1 to 6.0), IRR (men/women) 1.5 (95% CI 1.3 to 1.7)/1.1 (95% CI 0.9 to 1.3). IRRs were statistically significantly elevated in men with AS versus controls for forearm fracture (1.4 (95% CI 1.1 to 1.7)) and hip fracture (1.8 (95% CI 1.4 to 2.3)), whereas not in women with AS where the IRRs were 1.1 (95% CI 0.9 to 1.4) and 1.0 (95% CI 0.6 to 1.4). For humerus fracture, IRRs were 1.4 (95% CI 0.99 to 1.9) in men with AS versus controls and 1.1 (95% CI 0.8 to 1.6) in women.ConclusionsBoth men and women with AS have a slightly higher risk of non-vertebral fractures than the general population. A statistically significantly higher risk of fractures of the proximal humerus, distal forearm or hip was found in men with AS in comparison to general population, where the relative risk was especially pronounced for hip fracture.

  • A journey into the new employment service landscape of responsibilisation: Towards de-personalisation of the caseworker-jobseeker relationship
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social Welfare. - : Wiley. - 1369-6866 .- 1468-2397. ; 33:1, s. 137-150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article analyses a new culture of responsibilisation implicated in a recent management reform in the Swedish Public Employment Service. Based on an interview study and organisational documents, it is shown that the reform entails a new form of responsibilisation of jobseekers as well as caseworkers. As jobseekers are expected to ‘carry their own case’ through the administrative job-search process, they are obliged to manage tasks that used to be in the caseworker's area of responsibility. Furthermore, caseworkers are expected to regulate themselves in new ways and change their mind-set according to new organisational values and behavioural norms, requiring a restraining of their availability to clients. It is argued that the employment agency is increasingly turned into the agency of the active and responsible jobseeker, which entails one further shift towards individual responsibility in Swedish labour market policy and one further step towards the breakup of a personal caseworker–jobseeker relationship.

  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. - 1400-9692. ; 28:2, s. 5-11

  • Ingår i: Social Policy & Administration. - : Wiley. - 0144-5596 .- 1467-9515. ; 51:2, s. 367-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social investment (SI) is part of a strategy to modernize the European welfare states by focusing on human resource development throughout the life-course, while ensuring financial sustainability. Recognizing that this strategy was only partially implemented by the EU member states prior to the financial and Eurozone crises, this article investigates whether reforms and expenditure patterns in labour market policy (LMP) have moved more towards or away from SI following the 2008 financial crisis. We use quantitative and qualitative data to investigate the degree to which there have been shifts in the SI aspects of LMPs in eight countries across four welfare state regimes. We also investigate which aspects of LMPs have been strengthened and which have been weakened, enabling us to make a nuanced assessment of labour market SIs across the EU in a period of permanent austerity. We find that although the eight countries under examination have different starting points, there is little evidence of increased SI-orientation of LMPs. Upskilling, which is at the heart of SI, did not increase from 2004–08 to 2009–13, while incentive reinforcement and employment assistance – more about labour market entry and marketing of skills – grew in importance. If this trend continues across Europe, there is a risk that SI will become lost in translation and end up as a clearer neo-liberal version of workfarism.

  • The institutionalization of a new social cleavage Ideological influences, main reforms and social inequality outcomes of "the new work strategy"
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk Forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 55:2-3, s. 155-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this article is to analyse the ideological influences, main reforms and social inequality outcomes of "the new work strategy", i.e. the former Swedish centre-right Alliance government's work-first approach. By studying government bills and reports, official statistics, and research on welfare and labour market policies, discourses, policy measures and their outcomes have been analysed. The main conclusion is that Sweden, the former prototypical "social democratic" welfare state, has adopted a new institutional framework for social protection that we call a "work-first, consolidation state". The reforms aimed at shrinking the welfare state were implemented by strengthening activation principles in social protection systems as well as a politics of lowering taxes, which has institutionalized a new social cleavage in Swedish society and resulted in a massive redistribution from the public sector to the private sector. We also discuss how the transformation of labour income taxes and social protection systems was legitimized by the Alliance's discourse on "outsiderhood", and one ideological influence is located in American discourses of the underclass.

  • Learn or die : the development of an assessment framwork for SME entrepreneurial learning programmes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Enterprise Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1468-4330 .- 1741-8127. ; 11:1, s. 92-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The unique features of entrepreneurial learning, that involves multiple dimensions, are not easily captured and today few appropriate assessment frameworks exist. The aim of this paper is therefore to develop an assessment framework for entrepreneurial learning and empirically illustrate its potential on a specific SME learning program. Based on a survey of owners/managers who took part in the government supported learning program, krAft, an exploratory factors analysis and a regression analysis were conducted. The paper proposes a two dimensional framework of cognitive and social/emotional learning outcomes where both are strongly correlated to internal efficiency but only the social/emotional outcomes are correlated to external effectiveness. The paper therefore concludes that the mere focus on cognitive learning outcomes is not enough in order to successfully act upon business opportunities. Hence, the social/emotional learning dimension is of great importance, and should be utilized, in the development of arranged SME learning groups.

  • Ingår i: Project Management Journal. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 8756-9728 .- 1938-9507. ; 47:3, s. 139-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to explore the roles and potential benefits of axiology and value theory in project research. This is done through (1) an exploration of the essentials of axiology and value theory; (2) a review focused on how values have been used in project research; and (3) a reflection based on the historical–logical development of—and paradigmatic influences on—projects and their management. It is concluded that project research would benefit from a more encompassing philosophical treatment of axiology beyond merely acknowledging values as a thematic concept or as part of a project management methodology.

    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze service management practices within a project management context.Design/methodology/approach: This research supporting conceptual developments was both exploratory and qualitative in nature and utilized an in-depth case study of a major product development project.Findings: The conceptual framework developed is applied to empirical observations of product development project. Because there is an adequate fit with observations, elements of a service management approach appear to be viable in the description, managing, and control of projects.Research limitations/implications: Because the research was built on a case study, one has the limitations common with that approach. Conversely, case studies are acknowledged as useful in the identification of important variables in situations in which there is little control over events in a real-world context.Practical implications: Customer satisfaction is a requirement of project organizations, which is an inherent requisite of any service organization. Consequently, one turns to those elements in the practice of service management that lead to best management practices.Originality/value: This paper contributes with a practice-based understanding of how project management is based on integrated service practice.

  • The Informal Liaison Role of Project Controllers in New Product Development Projects
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managing Projects in Business/Emerald. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1753-8378 .- 1753-8386. ; 6:3, s. 410-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the liaison role of project controllers in new product development (NPD) projects.Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on a case study of an industrial new product development project. In total, 68 in-depth interviews were conducted and 32 meetings were observed. Using an inductive approach, this paper scrutinizes the roles of three specific individuals – their formal role as project controllers and their informal role as liaisons.Findings – The study found that project controllers play a crucial part in the everyday work of projects – both formally and informally. Project controllers undertake important liaison activities that are not a part of their formal roles in which they extend their responsibilities to include informal activities such as peacekeeping, probing, nailing, process implementation and streamlining.Practical implications – This paper argues that managers must identify and acknowledge the importance of informal liaisons and liaison activities among project members because such activities are of crucial importance for the facilitation of communication and for work-flow coordination. By viewing the project controller as someone who is “dressing the project in numbers”, the role can be understood as a support function aimed at close interaction and cross-functional learning, rather than a function aimed at distant supervision and control.Originality/value – This paper provides important insights into informal aspects of project roles and the everyday work of project controllers.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The IUP Journal of Soft Skills. - 0973-8479. ; V:1, s. 7-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Almost 40 years ago the importance of liaison roles was pointed out. The liaison role, which is described as managerial means to achieve coordination amongst different knowledge domains by facilitating communication, has been a subject of extensive interest during the years. Most of this interest has either focused on (1) the liaison position with no decisional authority, formal power, but is formally established, or (2) the integrating manager which is a formal position with recognized formal authority. This paper aims at highlighting the importance of liaisons, or`glue people', in projects. Based on a theoretical underpinning of projects as temporary organizations this paper analyses hands-on project work. The analysis is based on two comprehensive in-depth qualitative case studies, one in the construction industry and the other in the truck industry. Both of these cases focus on the actual everyday work of the project participants. In this paper we argue that `glue people' possess specific soft skills such as: the ability to facilitate communication among professional groups, create commitment, and reduce uncertainty. These are all important skills in order to handle the everyday complexity and manage the interdependent sets of diverse skills and knowledge domains present in temporary organizations. The paper concludes that `glue people' share some characteristics of formal liaisons and integrating managers, but that new novel explanations for understanding `glue people' are necessary.

  • Transition processes in an interorganizational platform project
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managing Projects in Business/Emerald. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1753-8378 .- 1753-8386. ; 5:3, s. 400-419
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify and understand challenges related to transition processes that occur between projects and the permanent organisation, as well as the outcome of such processes.Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on an explorative, in-depth case study of a multi-project setting. The concept phase of three projects was followed by participative observations and ongoing interviews over a fifteen week period at two sites and in two countries. The empirical material was analyzed through a process-orientated approach focusing on daily project activities.Findings: Transition processes are characterized by containing operational complexities. These operational complexities demand from project stakeholders to perform multiple translational and transformative activities. The outcome from these activities are for example strategic, operational, and functional fine-tuning, but also attitudinal turnaround.  Research limitations/implications: This research is based on an interorganizational vehicle platform project setting. The findings from this study can therefore not with ease be generalized to other settings. However, it is likely that actors in other interorganizational project settings can benefit from the findings since there probably are a multitude of transition processes in such projects as well.Practical implications: Managers can learn that it is important to map all related transition processes, analyze the implications that these processes have on the project, and perform a dialog with project members so that the sense of operational complexity and uncertainty can be reduced. This type of action will reduce feelings of frustration and create a sense of readiness to deal with unexpected events.Originality/value: First the setting “an interorganizational vehicle platform” is largely understudied, second this paper pinpoints three unique transition processes and thereby contributes to the sparsely researched area of transition processes.

    •  Models for continuous improvement processes and for game-based learning currently have some drawbacks. Based on work with Karlstad Lean Factory®, a dual model for game-based learning and improvement processes is presented. This model also shows instructional scaffolding, and there is evidence that its use stimulates training transfer. A natural step is to extend the use of fullscale lean production simulators to a novel use as innovation testbeds. This can lower the threshold for production innovation in SMEs. A small case study shows how this novel use can be organised, with several benefits for the company.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Osteoporosis International. - : Springer. - 0937-941X .- 1433-2965. ; 33:1, s. 205-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have impaired volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) assessed with high-resolution peripheral computed tomography (HRpQCT). This first longitudinal HRpQCT study in AS shows that cortical and trabecular vBMD decreased at tibia and that signs of inflammation were associated with cortical bone loss at tibia and radius.Introduction: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have reduced volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) in the peripheral skeleton assessed with high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HRpQCT). The aims were to investigate longitudinal changes in vBMD, cortical area, and microarchitecture and to assess factors associated with changes in vBMD and cortical area in men with AS.Methods: HRpQCT of radius and tibia was performed in 54 men with AS at baseline and after 5 years. Univariate and multivariable linear regression analyses were used. Results: At tibia, there were significant decreases exceeding least significant changes (LSC) in cortical and trabecular vBMD, mean (SD) percent change −1.0 (1.9) and −2.7 (5.0) respectively (p<0.001). In multivariable regression analyses, increase in disease activity measured by ASDAS_CRP from baseline to follow-up was associated with decreases in cortical vBMD (β −0.86, 95% CI −1.31 to −0.41) and cortical area (β −1.66, 95% CI −3.21 to −0.10) at tibia. At radius, no changes exceeded LSC. Nonetheless, increase in ASDAS_CRP was associated with decreases in cortical vBMD, and high time-averaged ESR was associated with decreases in cortical area. Treatment with TNF inhibitor ≥ 4 years during follow-up was associated with increases in cortical vBMD and cortical area at tibia, whereas exposure to bisphosphonates was associated with increases in cortical measurements at radius. No disease-related variables or treatments were associated with changes in trabecular vBMD.Conclusion: The findings in this first longitudinal HRpQCT study in patients with AS strengthen the importance of controlling disease activity to maintain bone density in the peripheral skeleton.

  • Which measuring site in ankylosing spondylitis is best to detect bone loss and what predicts the decline : results from a 5-year prospective study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Arthritis Research & Therapy. - London, United,Kingdom : BioMed Central. - 1478-6362. ; 19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Studies have shown increased prevalence of osteoporosis and increased risk for vertebral fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine anterior-posterior (AP) projection may be difficult to interpret due to the ligamentous calcifications, and the lateral projection might be a better measuring site. Our objectives were to investigate BMD changes after 5 years at different measuring sites in patients with AS and to evaluate disease-related variables and medications as predictors for BMD changes.METHODS: In a longitudinal study, BMD in Swedish AS patients, 50 ± 13 years old, was measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the hip, the lumbar spine AP and lateral projections, and the total radius at baseline and after 5 years. Patients were assessed with questionnaires, blood samples, and spinal radiographs for grading of AS-related alterations in the spine with the modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spinal Score (mSASSS) and assessment of vertebral fractures by the Genant score. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to investigate predictors for BMD changes.RESULTS: Of 204 patients included at baseline, 168 (82%) were re-examined after 5 years (92 men and 76 women). BMD decreased significantly at the femoral neck and radius and increased significantly at the lumbar spine, both for AP and lateral projections. Mean C-reactive protein during follow-up predicted a decrease in the femoral neck BMD (change in %, β = -0.15, p = 0.046). Use of bisphosphonates predicted an increase in BMD at all measuring sites (p < 0.001 to 0.013), except for the total radius. Use of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) predicted an increase in AP spinal BMD (β = 3.15, p = 0.012).CONCLUSION: The current study (which has a long follow-up, many measuring sites, and is the first to longitudinally assess the lateral projection of the spine in AS patients) surprisingly showed that lateral projection spinal BMD increased. This study suggests that the best site to assess bone loss in AS patients is the femoral neck and that inflammation has an adverse effect, and the use of bisphosphonates and TNFi has a positive effect, on BMD in AS patients.

    • This paper concerns the design of physical languages for controlling and programming robotic consumer products. For this purpose we explore basic theories of semiotics represented in the two separate fields of comics and fashion, and how these could be used as resources in the development of new physical languages. Based on these theories, the design concept of actDresses is defined, and supplemented by three example scenarios of how the concept can be used for controlling, programming, and predicting the behaviour of robotic systems.

    • Pleo is one of the more advanced interactive toys currently available for the home market, taking the form of a robotic dinosaur. We present an exploratory study of how it was interacted with and reflected upon in the homes of six families during 2 to 10 months. Our analysis emphasizes a discrepancy between the participants' initial desires to borrow a Pleo and what they reported later on about their actual experiences. Further, the data suggests an apparent tension between participants expecting the robot to work as a 'toy' while making consistent comparisons with real pet animals. We end by discussing a series of implications for design of this category of toys, in order to better maintain interest and engagement over time.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well established that engaging paradoxes and the role of space are important aspects of idea work. Although the significance has been recognized, studies that focus on the intersection between space and paradox are scarce. Accordingly, this article explores the intersection and focuses on the role of space in idea work characterized by paradoxes. More specifically, the aim of this article is twofold. First, the article aims at identifying the spatial conditions that enable organization members to think and act paradoxically. Second, the article aims at exploring how spatial conditions evoke a paradoxical way of thinking and doing. Based on three Scandinavian architectural firms, and through abductive inference, four spatial conditions are identified and outlined. The conditions are conceptualized as organized chaos, boundary(less)ness, premeditated spontaneity, and (re)framing. From the results, and through the discussion, the notion of “generative space” is introduced to explain the overall importance of spatiality, as well as how the interrelatedness of the conditions facilitates a paradoxical way of thinking and doing in idea work.

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the development of a new program at the School of Humanities at Örebro University, the subjects involved (English language, Rhetoric and Swedish), proposed the implementation of a pedagogical model that hitherto has been underused in the humanities, namely case-based learning. Although well established in other fields, case pedagogy has not been tested in the humanities to any large extent. In this report, we first describe the three subjects’ take on case pedagogy along with our experiences from its implementation in the program. Next, we discuss the criteria we deem essential for success in this pedagogical model; these four criteria that comprise the Harvard model are authenticity, open-endedness, applicability of theory, and implementation that supports learning objectives. In summary, we emphasize that these criteria should not be considered as a fixed template; instead, we propose that they be regarded as a source of inspiration and let applicable fields of practice and the discipline itself dictate which criteria are relevant.

  • On the soul of temporary organizations
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Almost 30 years ago, the renowned and well-cited Special Issue (SI) on Temporary Organizations was published in 1995 in the Scandinavian Journal of Management (SJM), which was born in the very first IRNOP, exactly 30 years ago. At the time of publication, the guest editor described the SI as a soul-searching activity in an emergent, but not yet well-established, research field (Lundin, 1995). What united the scholars’ contributions to the SI was their alternative gaze on projects as temporary organizations. This new perspective to studying projects awakened the theoretical and empirical curiosity of scholars mostly with organizational theory and sociological backgrounds, to understand why and how projects, as temporary organizations, differ from classic forms of organizations and organizing, that exist with an intention to survive and prosper over time. The 30-year milestone opens an opportunity to re-open the questions raised at the time, take stock and reflect again about the soul of temporary organizations in today’s society. After all, in the past 30 years, projects have become mainstream. In practice, projects mushroomed and have become a dominant mode of organizing, both within and between organizations. Project studies, i.e. the study of organizing through projects, has grown and is now a large and legitimate research field, attracting acclaimed scholars. The field has also specialized and developed an ecology of concepts to discern myriad forms of organizing through temporary organizations, such as projectbased organizations, project ecologies, project lineages, etc. The dominance of projects in society accompanied with dramatic changes in society, from advances in information technologies to a growing recognition of eminent threat of planetary collapse. Amidst such fundamental shifts. With this spirit in mind, this panel discussion aims to awaken Lundin’s early idea about soulsearching reflections on temporary organizations. We thus invite the panel and audience to engage in discussions and reflections in search of the soul of temporary organizations, the past, present and future.

  • Collaborating in primary healthcare : Practices fostering meaningful organizational routines
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In primary healthcare, various professions and roles need to collaborate to treat the constant influx of patients. Notorious problems of stress, high workload, high staff turnover, etcetera, make dealing with this collaboration even more challenging. Well-functioning organizational routines are needed to coordinate work, ensure patient safety, and the correct and equal treatment of patients. However, if the routines are perceived as meaningless, there is a high risk that professionals will deviate from them. Therefore, it is essential that the routine is perceived as meaningful to motivate all those involved to uphold the routine. Although the subjective meaningfulness of work has been extensively researched, it has yet to be connected to organizational routines. We, therefore, explore how meaningfulness can be enabled in organizational routines. Based on a thematic analysis of interviews with staff at three primary care units, six sources that make routines perceived as meaningful were identified. Also, we discuss two types of organizational practices that can foster meaningfulness in routines. Our findings have significant implications for healthcare organizations and are relevant for organizations in other contexts where different professional groups collaborate.

  • Addressing the need of transition by socializing and making new friends : A socio-technical perspective on large-scale change in construction
  • 2022
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This research took its point of departure in the aspiration of large-scale change of the construction industry, where existing industry structures has been frequently criticized. To facilitate innovation and change in the Swedish construction industry, a strategic innovation program has been established based on the idea that research, innovation, and development should manifest itself through the mobilization of collaborative and actor-driven networks. Using a strategic innovation program to support inter-organizational collaboration and actor-driven change is a fairly new phenomenon in the context of construction and thus the subject of inquiry for this research. From a theoretical point of view, this can be understood in terms of a transition of a socio-technical system. Therefore, the purpose was to gain a deeper understanding of how a socio-technical transition of the construction industry could be facilitated. The research presented in this licentiate thesis has been conducted between September 2019 – March 2022 and has been a part of a research project called Program Generic Measurement Methods. This research has a qualitative inquiry and has been designed as a longitudinal case study to understand, and follow, this process of change. The data that has been collected consist of document collection, structured interviews, semi-structured interviews and an autoethnographic approach including observations and self-reflection. Actor-network theory, and specifically the concepts related to the translation process and black boxing, has been used as an analytical framework and facilitated the analysis of the collected data. This thesis increases the understanding of how a socio-technical transition in construction could be facilitated by analyzing the events that lead to the development of the strategic innovation program as well as events from the operational part of the program. Key actors in these processes are identified as well as their roles in a transition of the construction industry. The results indicates that this is far from a linear process that contains a lot of negotiation between participating actors. During this process, the role of digitalization changes when the intention of the program moves from its initiators to the actors engaged in different technological niches. A better integration of academia is asked for due to the complexity that digitally driven transition processes brings. Moreover, actors in the construction industry are encouragedto engage in technological niches to interact and collaborate in new, or modified, ways outside traditional construction activities since it stimulates learning and facilitate a deeper understanding of the challenges that actors in the construction process face together.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While measuring the performance of collaborative research and development (R&D) projects is critical for both practitioners and academics, it is rarely straightforward in practice. Based on firsthand experience of the performance measurement practice within an extensive, long-term, Swedish innovation programme named Smart Built Environment, this chapter provides a reflective account of the setup and challenges experienced. The programme was launched in 2016 and is a long-term initiative of up to 12 years. Backed by three state research agencies, it is, to date, the single largest investment in innovation, R&D in digitalisation made in the Swedish built environment sector. This chapter is written as a collaborative autoethnography, with three out of the five authors having had firsthand experience of the specific measurement initiative analysed. The chapter describes how the visionary objectives of the programme, related to sustainability, time, cost and business logics, were developed and operationalised in practice. Furthermore, it is explained how several emergent challenges related to ambiguity in goal formulation, adaptation to contingencies of moving targets and temporal scope, and development of a multiplicity of assessment methods, were managed.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to innovate and adapt to change is of central importance at all levels of society today. In this article, a strategic innovation programme (SIP) in the Swedish construction industry is addressed as a vehicle to facilitate system-wide innovation and change. Based on the need to further understand how to deliver industry-level innovation, and an identified scarcity of studies addressing the role key actors have in establishing a SIP, the aim is to analyse and describe how a strategic innovation programme is established and what role key actors play in this process. Theoretically, the study draws inspiration from actor-network theory (ANT) and especially the translation process, which previous studies have shown to be suitable to understand the challenges involved when mobilizing a network of heterogeneous actors. Empirically, the study is based on a qualitative approach and consists of 11 semi-structured interviews with individuals active in the early stages and the development of a SIP. In the article, a number of actor groups are identified and followed through what can be described as two cycles of translation, where one actor group is trying to make itself a ‘legitimate spokesperson’ for the emerging SIP. The analysis shows, for example, how the problematization of structural changes, digitalization, and industrialization enables the mentioned actor group to successfully translate the interests of other actors into an obligatory passage point (OPP). Apart from providing an understanding of the role that different actor groups play in the becoming of an innovation programme, the study also shows how it is not primarily the actors in the construction industry who are conservative; instead, there is an inertia in the system that complicates a collaborative development of innovations in the industry.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managing Projects in Business/Emerald. - : Emerald. - 1753-8378 .- 1753-8386. ; 5:4, s. 695-713-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide an overview and analysis of the legacy of Christensen and Kreiner's (1991) literally classic Projektledning: att leda och lära i en ofullständig värld (Project Management: to manage and learn in an incomplete world). Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on a three-step theoretical analysis deduced from the mentioned classic. The first step provides an overview of the content where the core ideas of the book are derived. This is followed by an analysis of the legacy and impact on theory, empirical approaches, and education. Finally, three main takeaways from the book are discussed. FindingsIn tracking the legacy, the paper analyses, discusses, and illustrates how the Scandinavian approach to projects has evolved. It pinpoints the two core insights of the book; the importance of understanding the impact of the institutional environment on operations, and embracing uncertainty as a natural part of everyday organizational reality. Based on these insights it is shown how the book has expanded the theoretical contributions towards a focus on temporary organisations and everyday practice, how it has helped to make situated empirical research matter, and how it has influenced education to deal with real-life project challenges. Research limitations/implicationsThis paper investigates a book available only in the Scandinavian language and thus only available for a Scandinavian research community. As such the review is written from a Scandinavian perspective, with the limitations in terms of objectivity to the book that follow from that. Practical implicationsThe main lessons discussed in relation to the heritage from the book are: an increased focus on the details of organizing, situated multi-level case-studies, and situation-sensitive teaching methodologies. The paper argues that an increased understanding of projects should start with a detailed multi-level analysis of temporary organizing to provide a sound foundation on which to base future research and teaching. Originality/valueThe paper provides an understanding of the origins and diffusion of underpinning ideas of the Scandinavian approach to project management.

  • Using retrospective data to study extreme contexts : the case of impromptu teams
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: SAGE research methods cases. - London : Sage Publications. - 9781526477989 ; , s. 1-9
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This teaching case focuses on challenges and opportunities of studying extreme contexts in general and the use of retrospective data in particular. The case takes its start in a retrospective case study of the fatal 1996 Mount Everest climbing incident. Based in the case description, the research design of the article, and the practical execution, a number of challenging areas and important lessons with respect to studying extreme contexts are outlined. By working with the method case, we expect students to further their ability to assess the main benefits and challenges when studying extreme contexts, discuss the appropriateness of possible methods when studying extreme contexts, analyze the use of method applied to a specific extreme context, and critically examine the use of method applied to this specific (extreme) case.

  • Permanent Establishment through Related Persons : A Study on the Treatment of Related Persons under Article 5 of the OECD Model Tax Convention
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Globalization, changed business practices and the developments in information technology have put pressure on the PE concept. This thesis deals with related persons and the PE concept, and the increasing tension between them. The main objective of the thesis is to analyze and define the scope of the PE concept, when applied to related persons. To meet this objective, the thesis is focused on three research questions. Initially, a theoretical foundation regarding the PE concept is established. It is concluded that the PE concept’s underlying principles are the notions of source, equity and basic neutrality. The first research question deals with the scope of the “related company clause” in Article 5(7) of the OECD MTC. To answer this, the history and underlying principles and theories of the related person PE are analyzed. It is concluded that the related person PE should be understood as including two distinct taxpayers and that the “related company clause” has no substantive scope. The second research question deals with the application of the PE concept to situations with related persons. It is established that the central question is whose business is being conducted. It is argued that this is a substance-over-form assessment and that guidance should be had from the dependency test in the agency clause, i.e. legal control and economic relationship. The third research question concerns what function the PE concept has, and should have, when it comes to preventing tax avoidance. It is argued that applying substance-over-form, not inherent to a specific PE condition, should be limited to preventing abuse. To determine if a situation is abusive, one should compare the outcome with the PE concept’s underlying principles. If the result is unintended and contrary to the underlying principles, it is an abuse of the PE concept, provided that this is achieved intentionally by the taxpayer.

  • A literature review on projectification: Trends, emerging ideas and avenues for future research
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The notion of projectification was popularized in the mid nineteen nineties. Since then, the interest and scientific scope has increased heavily. Therefore, this paper aims to take stock of the development and explore the phenomenon of projectification, where the main trends and emerging research areas will be outlined. Through an integrative literature review, a total of 86 journal articles, books and conference contributions, have been analyzed. The review, among others, illustrate that there is an increased variety of topics represented and a growing interest in the use of theory. Moreover, a number of upcoming fields, and a movement of inquiries from primarily the meso-level, to include challenges on both micro- and macro-level are identified. Based on the results it is suggested that future research should move away from silo-thinking, try to cover some blank spots highlighted, and to engage in new ideas to further develop projectification studies.

  • A technological niche perspective on the dissemination of results from strategic innovation programs
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the challenges of disseminating results from a Strategic Innovation Programme (SIP) in the Swedish built environment sector. The study takes on a technological niche perspective and combines document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and focus group interviews to increase the understanding of what might hamper sector-wide dissemination of results from SIPs. Analyzing the dissemination practices from a technological niche perspective, it is shown how the dissemination of results is dependent on two preconditions (ambition and capacity) and how clarity of target group(s) in combination with the alignment between RDI logic and the target group's frame of reference (which is anchored in the socio-technical regime) further inhibits or enables dissemination. It is concluded that ensuring these preconditions and strengthening the alignment is critical to improving sector-wide dissemination. However, an inherent dilemma must be dealt with in terms of not necessarily prioritizing dissemination at the expense of norm-challenging ideas. Given that the overarching goal of technological niches is to achieve socio-technical change, merely promoting incremental (norm-aligned) change – or “lame ducks”— is not enough.

  • A two factor-model of the meaningfulness of routines
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study takes its starting point in the question of what makes routines meaningful. Despite the well-established understanding of the importance of both well-functioning routines in primary health care, and the benefits associated with meaningful work, research to date has not integrated the two streams of research. Therefore, the purpose is to increase the understanding of meaningful routines. Based on interviews with three different professional categories in primary healthcare, and a thematic analysis on a latent level, the notion of a two-factor model for meaningful routines is proposed. In the analysis, the two-factor notion is used as a sensitizing concept, and nine factors explaining practitioners' sense of non-meaninglessness and six factors explaining meaningfulness in routines are identified. Thereby, the paper contributes to a better understanding of both what enables a sense of meaningfulness in routines and how different professional roles in the workplace differ in their perceptions. Practically, the results also open for improved routine practices that should consider the individual-collective dichotomy of meaningful routines and the challenge resulting from the fact that what enables meaningfulness in routines for one profession might be what erodes meaningfulness for another.

  • Alliancing within a Public–Private Partnership
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd Nordic Academy of Management Conference (NFF), Reykjavik, Island, August 21-23, 2013. Track 11..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Relationship-focused procurement forms have lately attracted extensive attention. Here, a first of its kind attempt of Alliancing within a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) is examined through a case study of the largest Australian infrastructure project ever. The project was set up as a PPP between a consortium and the state government where the project is situated. The consortium, that consisted of two of Australia’s largest construction companies, and a major project financing company, was to finance, design and construct, operate, and maintain the Oz1Airportlink until 2053. In the design-construct phase, part of the undertaking was however set up as a project alliance (PA). Through the case study it is revealed that this allowed the contractor joint venture, and a major specialist subcontractor (SERV1), to form an alliance that allowed more flexibility in the work allocation and risk/uncertainty management. It can also be concluded that the choice was base on the need for close collaboration, team integration, knowledge, and perspective sharing. The major driver was complexity on both a technical and relational level. The paper makes three contributions. Primarily, it contributes with a, first ever, analysis of a project alliance within a PPP. Secondly, it provides with important insights into the reasons and emergence of the mentioned configuration – knowledge that should be of interest for both practitioners and academics. Finally, it provides an understanding of an emergent form of early contractor involvement with a PPP special purpose ownership vehicle that combines competition and collaboration for the PPP end-owner.
