  • Designing for care, employing ethnographic design methods at special care homes for young offenders. A pilot study.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Design4Health, Melbourne.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to present a pilot study conducted at a special residential home for children/adolescents with psychosocial problems, substance abuse and/or criminal behavior. These homes are run by the Swedish National Board of Institutional Care (SiS), providing individual compulsory care. The goal of the pilot study is to investigate what methodologies and methods are suitable for the targeted group on one hand, on the other hand, to get a better understanding of the physical environment’s impact on children/adolescents’ wellbeing and rehabilitation, as well as how the physical environment can support staff’s ability to provide care and treatment. This pilot is a part of a research project at the University of Gothenburg, which aims to investigating the meaning of the physical environment at these homes.

  • Ingår i: Design for Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2473-5132 .- 2473-5140. ; 2:1, s. 127-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This visual essay describes a pilot study aimed at evaluating the methods ‘Sketch and Talk’ and photo-voice in researching the impact of the physical environment in special residential homes in Sweden. The homes provide compulsory care for young persons with psychosocial problems, criminality or drug abuse. The field of research on the physical environment's impact focuses mainly on security and risk factors; little is known about the lived experience of young incarcerated persons. Visual and written data was collected at a home for young men (16–21), and analysed through a phenomenological approach outlined by van Manen and Ahmed. In this article, we present Lived Space as a main theme with three sub-themes that emerged from critical reading of the young men's narratives: Being elsewhere; Being punished and Being disempowered. The methods proved to be suitable, however, due to challenges related to the context and the young men's specific life situations, modifications were necessary.

  • ‘Fit and Re-Orientation’: Unpacking Layers of Carceral Design Heritage in Contemporary Design of Special Care Homes for Youth, and Its Impact on Well-Being
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the conference 'The Material and Immaterial Heritage of Psychiatry', organized by Centre for Critical Heritage Studies, UGOT, Heritage and Wellbeing, Sweden..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Abstract: This paper aims to critically discuss and analyze the carceral (prisonlike) layers of the particular design heritage that form the contemporary interior design of rooms in institutions that serves as correctional facilities; such as prisons, psychiatric hospitals and so-called special youth homes. Moreover, it aims to shed a light on the impact carceral design may have on well-being for people who inhabit these spaces. The main focus of this paper will be on special youth homes that are run by The Swedish National Board of Institutional (Statens Institutionsstyrelse, SiS) and provide compulsory care and rehabilitation for children and adolescents with severe psychosocial problems, substance abuse and/or criminal behavior. The special youth homes are considered to be neither prisons nor jails. Nevertheless, some are actually located in former prisons, and the majority are built for incarceration. To analyze the layers of carceral design the concept of ‘Fit and Re-Orientation’ is used. This concept stems from a phenomenological viewpoint developed by Sarah Ahmed; “Queer phenomenology”. To elucidate incarcerated young people’s lived experiences of carceral design and the impact it has on their wellbeing in everyday life, examples of empirical data are brought in. It is further discussed how the physical environment ‘Fits or Re-Orientates’ them in the process of (re)habilitation. Finally, the authors suggest a model for how the dialectic relationship between the incarcerated person and the physical environment can be understood and why this relationship becomes counterproductive for (re)habilitating care processes and well-being.

  • “It’s important to not lose myself” Beds, Carceral Design and Women’s Everyday Life within Prison Cells
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Prison, Architecture and Humans. - Oslo : Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 9788202529673
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reveals the prison bed’s carceral design and damage to the body. The bed, however, is also a place where “time flies” and where an ongoing negotiation with the self occurs. To gain further knowledge about how the physical environment in prison is experienced this article will present and discuss the narratives of three female inmates at a Scandinavian prison. These women’s narratives implicitly and explicitly express how corporal and psychological punishment is interwoven into the prison system through the design of the prison cell, its objects, and the system’s theoretical concept. By using the ethnographic design method ‘Sketch and Talk’, which employs text and visual documentation, these narratives uncover both a micro and macro picture of lived experience produced by the interior design of the prison cell. In the field of research on architecture and design the focus favors exterior expressions and planning of space. However, interior design and its objects such as beds, chairs and tables are experienced long-term by inmates in a close and intimate relationship, and therefore can be expected to have a greater impact. This article attempts to expose details and phenomena produced by interior design as well as the inmate’s production of space and its meaning. The article also suggests further areas of design that could mitigate the damage inflicted on inmates by prison cell design.

  • ”Sketch and Talk”, Drawing lines between incarcerated humans, the interior, and “stuff”. Design methodologies for (well)-being in prisons, youth homes and psychiatric hospitals
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With increasing global and local incarceration, the demand for prison beds is rapidly growing. The Swedish government’s plans for implementing youth prisons and amending laws regarding young people’s sentences risk increasing the already high numbers of mental health problems. Although security is an inherent element of institutions for care and incarceration (ICI), the present focus on reinforcing security is similarly jeopardizing the health of inmates, patients, and youths in prisons, forensic psychiatric hospitals, and youth homes. Moreover, the rapid production of beds will likely lead to issues with staff security and work environment. The field of research for design in correctional institutions and behavioral health is limited. Although there is an increased interest in evidence-based design, EBD cannot be said to extend to all design aspects for vulnerable people in ICIs. However, this dissertation critically discusses the dichotomies, meanings, and connecting lines between incarcerated humans, the interior, and stuff, and it looks primarily at the design of institutions in Scandinavia. Moreover, ICIs are understood in this dissertation as an existential and ethical dichotomy with well-being on the one hand and the losses that incarceration brings on the other. The tension between punishment and (re)habilitation manifests through materiality, design, and high-security measures. However, the question for design is not whether it is possible to hinder the pain and losses that come with incarceration but how design can mitigate these losses, alleviate pain, foster well-being, and assist staff through a safe and supportive work environment. Part of this doctoral project has been conducted within a multidisciplinary research project aimed at creating knowledge about youths’ experience of the physical environment in Sweden’s youth homes (SiS). Two of this dissertation’s five papers were written as part of this research project (IV, V). The other three papers discuss the early method development of Sketch and Talk (II), the narrative of patients’ experience of the physical environment in forensic care (I), and the design of prison cells through the narratives of three women (III). The theoretical underpinning of this dissertation is inspired by phenomenology and ethnography. It therefore advocates for a design research methodology that brings the researcher closer to the phenomenon and into the node of peoples’ experiences. Hence, one of this dissertation’s contributions is the Sketch and Talk method, which uses sketching and talking when meeting a participant in their cell or room as a way of creating a space for mutual observation and understanding of the interior. Moreover, as ethical awareness is paramount in research with vulnerable groups, the method has been valuable through its transparency and open approach. Design for ICIs can be seen as a “wicked problem” and is as much an ethical and ideological matter as a design-related problem. This dissertation identifies a “wickedness” in how design processes primarily take their point of departure in previous products and seek to improve them. Therefore, when penal ideology is saturating the previous product (ICI) the ideology has pertained to the new ICI as carceral design heritage. Identifying carceral design is in itself a first step in designing for well-being. This presents a wide-open opportunity to reform and rethink – an opportunity we must take, particularly in light of planned investments and expansion. This dissertation suggests that future research can contribute with more knowledge on how an interior can promote well-being through design for autonomy, dwelling, and movement and as a result can open up new horizons of change and hope.

  • Space and place for health and care
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Abingdon : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 15:sup1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This discussion paper aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the state of the art of research engaged with conceptual matters of space and place for health and care. Method: The authors, who represent a variety of academic disciplines, discuss and demonstrate the conceptual recognition of space and place in research in health and caring sciences building upon own work and experience. Results: To explore the concepts of space and place for health and care is a research pursuit of utmost importance, and should be made through transdisciplinary research collaborations, whereby spatial theories from various disciplines could be communicated to cultivate truly novel and well-informed research. Furthermore, engaging with relational and topological perceptions of space and place poses methodological challenges to overcome in future research on health and care. Conclusions: We argue that there is a need for accelerating spatially informed research on health and care that is informed by current theories and perspectives on space and place, and transdisciplinary research collaborations are a means to achieving this. © 2020 The Author(s).
