  • A New Application Area for Fullerenes: Voltage Stabilizers for Power Cable Insulation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 27:5, s. 897-902
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fullerenes are shown to be efficient voltage-stabilizers for polyethylene, i.e., additives that increase the dielectric strength of the insulation material. Such compounds are highly sought-after because their use in power-cable insulation may considerably enhance the transmission efficiency of tomorrow's power grids. On a molal basis, fullerenes are the most efficient voltage stabilizers reported to date.

  • Electrical Tree Inhibition by Voltage Stabilizers
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Annual Report - Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena, CEIDP. - 0084-9162. ; , s. 605-608
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrical treeing is one of the main degradation mechanisms in polymer dielectrics at highly divergent electric fields and can, if initiated, cause dielectric breakdown as soon as an electrical tree channel has bridged the insulation. One way of increasing resistance to electrical treeing is the addition of certain organic additives such as polycyclic aromatic compounds or benzophenone-like structures. These additives act as voltage stabilizers that are believed to capture high energy electrons and dissipate their energy, preventing degradation of the polymer matrix by the impact of “hot electrons”. In this study, a benzil type compound is evaluated as voltage stabilizer in a superclean cross-linked polyethylene compound used for high voltage cable applications. The stabilizing effect of the additives is measured using test objects of wire-plane electrode geometry in ramped AC voltage experiments. For determining tree initiation conditions, optical detection is used and correlated to voltage measurements. In this way, the initiation voltage of each single tree is determined. Results show that the investigated voltage stabilizer raises the electrical tree inception level significantly. The stabilizing effect is dependent on voltage ramp rate and using a lower ramp rate results in a more pronounced effect of the stabilizer.

  • High electron affinity: a guiding criterion for voltage stabilizer design
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 3:14, s. 7273-7286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Voltage stabilizers are an emerging class of additives that enhance the dielectric strength of an insulating polymer such as polyethylene. Several partially conflicting reports ascribe the stabilizing effect to either a high electron affinity or low ionization potential of the additive. Here, we report a clear correlation of the electron affinity and to a lesser extent the EHOMO–ELUMO difference of various voltage stabilizers with electrical tree initiation in cross-linked polyethylene. To facilitate a fair evaluation, the voltage-stabilizing efficiency of a set of 13 previously reported voltage stabilizers, which strongly differ in their chemical composition, is compared at equal stabilizer concentration and equivalent test methodology. These results are correlated with the electron affinity and EHOMO–ELUMO difference, as obtained from density functional theory (DFT) modeling, which agreed well with available literature values. Moreover, based on the here established strong correlation between dielectric strength and electron affinity, a new molecule with exceptionally high electron affinity is selected from the extended literature on organic photovoltaics. This malononitrile–benzothiadiazole–triarylamine based molecule with a high electron affinity of 3.4 eV gives rise to a 148% increase in tree initiation field compared to 40% obtained using anthracene, one of the most efficient previously reported voltage-stabilizers, under equivalent test conditions. Thus, we here propose to use the electron affinity as a guiding criterion for identifying novel high-efficiency voltage stabilizers, which opens up the vast library of organic semiconductors as potential candidates, as well as associated synthesis routines for the design of yet unexplored materials.

  • Tailored Side-Chain Architecture of Benzil Voltage Stabilizers for Enhanced Dielectric Strength of Cross-Linked Polyethylene
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Polymer Science, Part B: Polymer Physics. - : Wiley. - 1099-0488 .- 0887-6266. ; 52:16, s. 1047-1054
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synthesis and physico-chemical properties of seven benzil-type voltage stabilizers are reported. The benzil core is substituted with alkyl chains of different length that are linked to the benzil core via an ester, ether, or tertiary amine group. All additives can be melt-processed with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirms that benzil compounds are not affected by the LDPE cross-linking reaction induced by dicumyl peroxide. Moreover, a combination of gel content measurements, thermal analysis, and small-angle X-ray scattering indicates that the presence of benzil voltage stabilizers does not significantly alter the microstructure of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). Electrical tree inhibition experiments under high-voltage alternating current conditions show that all investigated additives substantially enhance the dielectric strength of the insulating material at a concentration of only 10 mmol kg−1. The highest improvement in dielectric strength, of more than 70% with respect to reference XLPE, is obtained with voltage stabilizers, which carry short (methyl) side chains that are linked to the benzil core via an ester or tertiary amine group.

  • A Versatile System for Electrical Treeing Tests under AC and DC Stress Using Wire Electrodes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 8th International Conference on Insulated Power Cables, Jicable’11, 19 – 23 June 2011, Versailles - France.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An alternative method to evaluate electrical treeing in solid dielectric materials is presented. Here the test sample utilises a wire electrode for creating the necessary high divergent electric field. This introduces a different preparation method and several of the disadvantages with the traditional needle sample can be avoided. Together with the test object a versatile test setup for both AC and DC measurements is illustrated. This alternative method has proven successful and an evaluation thereof as well as a comparative study between the two electrode systems is included.

  • Thioxanthone Derivatives as Stabilizers Against Electrical Breakdown in Cross-Linked Polyethylene for High Voltage Cable Applications
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Polymer Degradation and Stability. - : Elsevier BV. - 0141-3910. ; 112, s. 63-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the search of voltage stabilizers for high voltage underground cables the chemical synthesis and electrical tree inhibiting effect of a series of thioxanthone derivatives in cross-linked low-density polyethylene (XLPE) is reported. The strongest increase in electrical tree initiation field under high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) conditions was 55% compared to reference XLPE after the addition of 0.3 wt% 9-oxo-9H-thioxanthen-2-yl methacrylate. Thermal analysis, small angle X-ray scattering and gel content measurements showed that the addition of the stabilizers did not significantly influence the microstructure and gel fraction of XLPE. A comparison between the stabilizing effects of the thioxanthone derivatives and previously reported photophysical properties revealed that a short lifetime of the triplet excited state can be related to a good voltage-stabilizing effect.

  • Dielectric strength of γ-radiation cross-linked, high vinyl-content polyethylene
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Polymer Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-3057. ; 64, s. 101-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore γ-radiation cross-linking of high vinyl-content low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and its potential use as a high-voltage insulation material. Of the three investigated resins containing 1, 0.5 and 0.17 vinyl groups per 1000 carbons, respectively, only the highest vinyl-content material featured a sufficiently high gel content of more than 70% and hot-set elongation below 175%, when cross-linked with a γ-radiation dose of at least 68 kGy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) reveal that neither the crystallinity nor the lamellar thickness of the highest vinyl-content LDPE are negatively affected by γ-radiation cross-linking. As a result, we find that the dielectric strength, as characterized by electrical tree initiation experiments, can be maintained upon γ-radiation cross-linking.

  • Higher education as learning organizations – An empirical study of education managers perception of their work situation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: NFF 2022 Conference Papers.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents a study of Swedish academic leaders’ perception of their work situation. The aim was to explore the conditions which can enable creativity and learning in higher education institutions. The KEYS survey was sent to a sample of 64 university managers from social sciences, humanities and technical departments at Swedish universities. The response rate was 39 % (n25). The result indicates that education managers perceive a lack of feedback from upper management, but at the same time, they claim to have a high level of trust from upper management.

  • Ingår i: Acta dermato-venereologica. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1651-2057 .- 0001-5555. ; 95:2, s. 186-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this open, controlled, multicentre and prospective observational study, smartphone teledermoscopy referrals were sent from 20 primary healthcare centres to 2 dermatology departments for triage of skin lesions of concern using a smartphone application and a compatible digital dermoscope. The outcome for 816 patients referred via smartphone teledermoscopy was compared with 746 patients referred via the traditional paper-based system. When surgical treatment was required, the waiting time was significantly shorter using teledermoscopy for patients with melanoma, melanoma in situ, squamous cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma in situ and basal cell carcinoma. Triage decisions were also more reliable with teledermoscopy and over 40% of the teledermoscopy patients could potentially have avoided face-to-face visits. Only 4 teledermoscopy referrals (0.4%) had to be excluded due to poor image quality. Smartphone teledermoscopy referrals allow for faster and more efficient management of patients with skin cancer as compared to traditional paper referrals.

  • Effects of Inclusions of Oxidized Particles in XLPE on Treeing Phenomena
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Annual Report - Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena, CEIDP. - 0084-9162. ; , s. 597-600
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One issue with the use of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation in high voltage power cables is the presence of oxidized particles. Oxidation may occur during production of polyethylene, during the extrusion and curing process used to produce XLPE cables, or in subsequent processes/operation of the cables. Oxidized particles are here referred to as organic contaminants. In the present study artificial organic contaminants were introduced in XLPE samples made for electrical treeing measurements. Instead of using the common needle-needle or needle-plane configuration, a wire-plane configuration was used. Organic contaminants have an increasing conductivity and permittivity as function of increasing degree of oxidation. These properties most probably give rise to local electric field enhancements in the material. The morphology of organic contaminants also differs from virgin XLPE, which probably cause bad adhesion between the XLPE matrix and the contaminants. A combination of these factors was found to affect the electrical performance of the insulation. Several different parameters, such as dry and wet ageing, as well as AC voltage and DC voltage stress, were included in the study.

  • Entrepreneurial Heuristics During Crisis : How and Why Do Restaurateurs Make Decisions During Covid-19?
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesThe current Covid-19 pandemic has confronted the hospitality industry with an unprecedented challenge. The corona crisis provides an exceptional platform to further our understanding on how entrepreneurs operate under extreme uncertainty. We adopt an exploratory qualitative approach to study the decision-making heuristics Finnish restaurant entrepreneurs have used during a time of external crisis. More specifically we ask ourselves 1) how do entrepreneurs come to the decisions made, i.e. their decision making heuristics? and 2) what is the underlying logic of that rational?Prior workDecision making in the context of entrepreneurial action and uncertainty is largely covered in the effectuation framework, which outlines principles employed by experienced entrepreneurs when starting new firms and/or creating new markets. The corona crises offers a unique opportunity to study effectuation under absolute uncertainty and with unpredictable temporal dynamics.ApproachWe interviewed 11 restaurateurs in Helsinki and using a thinking aloud -protocol we analyseddecision-makers’ cognitive processes, priorities and related actions for a period of one year, starting from thecommencement of Finland’s first national Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020 and lasting until March 2021.ResultsThe 11 entrepreneurs differed considerably in terms of their use of effectual and causal logics despite their seemingly similar backgrounds and business context. In order to understand the decision-making logic of the entrepreneurs, two other aspects appear pivotal: first, the entrepreneurs’ time horizon and second, an additional set of pre-heuristics rooted in the entrepreneur’s personal beliefs and values used to steer the direction of future decisions.Implications and valueThe main contribution of the present study for the entrepreneurship research field is the identification of three separate heuristics used by entrepreneurs during a temporal crisis: 1) creating opportunities responding to personal values, 2) pragmatic action and 3) preserving business values. Both the first and third are strongly linked to values; the first to the personal values of the entrepreneur and the third to the business values of the enterprise.

  • Magazine management : Publishing as a business
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Magazine Research. - New York : Routledge. - 9781138854161
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magazine management as a field of study lies within the area of Media Management and Economics (MME). MME research is producing a growing body of literature focusing on economic, management and business issues in the media industries, based largely on traditional concepts and theories in the two related disciplines of management and economics. Study of media management and economics has grown in stature since the 1990s pioneering works of Robert Picard and Alan Albarran. Several seminal books have been published in the 2000s, including the Handbook of Media Management and Economics and Annet Aris and Jacques Bughin’s Managing Media Companies. The founding of three academic journals, namely the Journal of Media Economics (in 1988), the International Journal of Media Management (in 1999), and the Journal of Media Business Studies (in 2007), has established the field by providing industry-specific publication outlets for research on journalism and media-based business and economics. This chapter comprises a review of the current research on the magazine industry, segmented in the following five categories: media economics, management research, business modeling, innovation and brand management. These categories reflect the main body of research related to magazines and magazine publishing from a business perspective. Research specific to magazine publishing is scarce in comparison with that in other media sectors, such as the newspaper industry. However, a strength is that the body of magazine-related research includes both global and digital studies, with theory and applications continuing to mature. Included in this review is management research that focuses on magazine publishers, as well as research in which magazine publishing is the empirical context for a larger theoretical approach.

  • Simple rules and learning : Business model innovation during Covid-19
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ISPIM Innovation Conference 2021. - 9789523356917
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has presented the hospitality industry with novel challenges. In this paper, we follow four case restaurants for a period of 12 months and track how they have innovated their business models and their learning processes through several cycles of iteration. Our work is based on the notion of simple rules. Eisenhardt and Sull (2001) propose simple rules as an approach to help businesses make decisions under fast-changing and uncertain environments. Methodologically, our study is a comparative case study with data comprising of interviews (two rounds in 2020 and 2021) and secondary data such as newspaper articles, web articles, restaurant websites and social media validating the timelines. Our results reveal that each of the case companies has 2-3 simple rules that have been pivotal for their business model innovation, and that these simple rules have become more explicit through different learning mechanisms.

  • The interplay of dominant logic and dynamic capabilities in innovation activities
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation Management. - : Imperial College Press. - 1363-9196 .- 1757-5877. ; 19:5, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the strategic management literature, both managerial cognition and dynamic capabilities have been identified as drivers of change and transition in changing business environments. The purpose of this study is to explore the interplay of dominant logic and dynamic capabilities in the magazine publishing industry. We investigated four magazine publishing business units of a large media corporation situated in four different countries, namely Finland, the Netherlands, Hungary and Russia. A total of 40 magazine managers were interviewed. The results imply that dominant logic and dynamic capabilities coevolve in a reciprocal relationship, and the interplay of cognition and capabilities seems to be most visible in the seizing and reconfiguring capabilities. The results of the present study also illustrate that there may be several contradictory dominant logics within a single company. Dynamic capabilities useful to innovation processes are developed in the areas that are pinpointed by the managers as the locus of attention. Industry transition does not automatically change what companies think and do. That requires managerial attention and an active reconceptualization of the business and active development of not only day-to-day operations, but capabilities needed to change the way we work.

    • This paper explores consumer behavioural patterns on a magazine website. By using a unique dataset of real-life click stream data from 295 magazine website visitors, interesting behavioural patterns are noted: most importantly, 86% of all sessions only visit the blogs hosted by the magazine. This means that the visitors short-circuit the start page and are not exposed to any editorial content at all, and consequently not to any commercial content on those pages. Sessions visiting editorial content, commercial content or social media links actually represent only 1% or less of all sessions recorded. Consequently, the online platform gives very limited support for the business model. Our data questions the general assumption that online platforms are key components of a contemporary magazine’s business model.

  • Embracing the unplanned : Organizational ambidexterity within manufacturing SMEs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - : Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organizational Ambidexterity (OA)–the ability to simultaneously pursue exploration and exploitation–is increasingly being advocated as a way to gain competitive advantage. Most of the work on OA has focused on large, multi-divisional organizations, resulting in frameworks and prescriptions that have little utility for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With this in mind, we report on the first year of an exploratory, quasi-experimental study of ambidexterity within six small-to-medium manufacturing enterprises in Sweden. The research is characterized by an emic, ‘invented here’ approach, where companies closely examine their current exploration and exploitation practices, use their findings to formulate more advanced OA approaches uniquely suited to their values and circumstances, and iteratively apply and refine these over a four year period. It appears that the construct of ‘unplanned’ and associated sub-constructs such as ‘disturbance, crashes, and interruption’ could be an important key to framing and improving OA within these SMEs and perhaps more generally.

    • Purpose The purpose of this paper is to shed light on different types of knowledge created and how this links to the project design, process, and content. Design/methodology/approach In this paper the authors investigate participants' experiences from a three-year interactive research project, designed to trigger reflection among the participants. They apply a knowledge creation perspective on experiences expressed by participants as a result of different research project activities. Findings The study resulted in five categories of insights with potential for sustainable influence on the participating organizations: an understanding of concepts and theories; an understanding of the impacts of collaborative, reflective work processes; an understanding of the meaning of one's own organizational context; an understanding of the importance of increased organizational self-awareness; and an understanding of the potential for human interaction and communication. Practical implications The author's findings suggest that it is possible to design a project to promote more profound and sustainable effects on a business beyond the explicit purpose of the project. They advise practitioners to make room for iterative reflection; be mindful to create a trustful and open environment in the team; challenge results with opposing views and theories; and make room for sharing experiences and giving feedback. Originality/value This study contributes to unraveling key practices which can nurture conditions for knowledge creation in interactive research projects and business projects alike.

    • AI has the potential to be a disruptive technology causing paradigm shifts in industries and greatly impacting both operational and strategic decision making. Adopting AI technologies requires proactively engaging both the technical and social system of the organization as processes, workflows, as well as individual employees, are influenced. This paper explores potential tensions between the social and technical systems in the early change process of AI transformation to understand the nature and degree of AI transformation. We do this by analyzing in-depth inquiry from 23 focus groups involving 112 white-collar industrial employees in large multinational industrial firms using a change management perspective. Our study revealed nine categories of tensions divided into tensions between the current and future state and tensions between humans and machines. This stresses the need to adopt a socio-technical perspective in the attempt to understand organizations approaching AI and provides practical implications for organizations considering adopting AI technologies.

  • Ingår i: Energy & Fuels. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5029 .- 0887-0624. ; 36:11, s. 5868-5877
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of scrubber effluent recirculation has recently received attention in connection to NOxemission control. Here, we present data from an industrial-scale MSW-fired plant, where effluent from a combined NOxand SOxscrubber was recirculated and injected into a grate-fired boiler. The combustion characteristics were carefully studied during the injections to observe the potential effects on burnout and flue gas composition. In addition, deposition measurements were performed to observe effects on growth rate and chemical composition of deposits, which are critical factors for any solid fuel-fired heat and power plant. The recirculation of the nitrogen-rich waste streams was performed via pre-existing liquid injection equipment, and the results show that the N-containing compounds in the scrubber effluent were efficaciously reduced to inert nitrogen gas. Furthermore, the recirculation of the scrubber effluent may reduce ammonia demand for selective non-catalytic reduction systems by inhibiting the formation of ammonium chloride. Sulfur and alkali components in the effluent increased the deposition growth rate and also changed the chemical composition of the deposits. Understanding how the local conditions at the injection point influence the distribution and speciation of the injected compounds is essential for a successful recirculation strategy.

  • Ingår i: Neuropsychopharmacology : official publication of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1740-634X. ; 39, s. 2349-2356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by mood swings between manic and depressive states. The etiology and pathogenesis of BD is unclear, but many of the affected cognitive domains, as well as neuroanatomical abnormalities, resemble symptoms and signs of small vessel disease. In small vessel disease, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers reflecting damages in different cell types and subcellular structures of the brain have been established. Hence, we hypothesized that CSF markers related to small vessel disease may also be applicable as biomarkers for bipolar disorder. To investigate this hypothesis, we sampled CSF from 133 patients with bipolar disorder and 86 healthy controls. The concentrations of neurofilament light chain (NF-L), myelin basic protein (MBP), S100B, and heart-fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) were measured in CSF and analyzed in relation to diagnosis, clinical characteristics, and ongoing medications. Hereby we found an elevation of the marker of subcortical axonal damage, NF-L, in bipolar subjects. We also identified positive associations between NF-L and treatment with atypical antipsychotics, MBP and lamotrigine, and H-FABP and lithium. These findings indicate axonal damage as an underlying neuropathological component of bipolar disorder, though the clinical value of elevated NF-L remains to be validated in follow-up studies. The associations between current medications and CSF brain injury markers might aid in the understanding of both therapeutic and adverse effects of these drugs.Neuropsychopharmacology accepted article peview online, 03 April 2014; doi:10.1038/npp.2014.81.

  • Ingår i: European Management Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-2373 .- 1873-5681. ; 30:2, s. 141-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dynamic capabilities are the higher-order capabilities needed for changing operational-level capabilities and learning in new domains, and thus they are critical for innovation activities. The aim of this study is to explore heterogeneity of dynamic capabilities in a comparative setting. We chose four innovative case firms representing a single industry, namely magazine publishing. The similarity of the cases provided a solid foundation for comparing their dynamic capabilities. Based on the results it seems that the practices comprising sensing capabilities are likely to be similar across firms within a single industry, while practices comprising seizing and reconfiguring types of capabilities may differ more between companies. Thus dynamic capabilities have both idiosyncratic and common features across an industry. These findings are relevant to practicing managers in that they illustrate that competing companies within the same industry tend to develop similar types of practices to match the changing requirement of the operating environment. Hence, managers should not be falsely comforted by the current situation within their firms, but proactively develop their unique capabilities to gain advantage over their competitors.

Two types of newly developed wire-plane objects are investigated and compared with two versions of the traditionally used needle-needle objects. The two needle-needle objects are prepared according to ASTM standard and act as references, whereas the alternative objects rely on use of an ultra-thin tungsten wire (10 and 20 µm) in the test objects for providing the highly divergent electric stress. In one type of those object the wire extends from a semiconducting tab embedded in the tested material, while in the other type, the embedded wire is extended and connected externally by means of a copper tape. The comparison is made using cross linked polyethylene (XLPE) for the testing purposes. The wire type objects provide some promising advantages, including parallel formation of several electrical trees and an exposure of a larger material volume. Further advantages include the considerable simplification of both the manufacturing and the measuring procedures. Among the newly developed test objects, the one without the semiconducting tab is considered most advantageous as it allows for more accurate treeing initiation measurements at a lower voltage level. On the other hand the disadvantage is a formation of kinks on the wire that results from polyethylene shrink during sample preparation, which may yield some difficulties in correctly estimating the local field strength locally as well as straining the surrounding material. However the multitude of electric trees formed in each sample allows to easily discard the trees growing at such imperfections in following data analyses. Although finding a statistical method that makes good use of all the data poses a challenge, a suggested approach is presented.

  • Analysis of Multiple Electrical Trees Incepted at Wire Electrode Test Object by Means of PD Detection
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proc. of Jicable HVDC'13 Seminar. ; , s. paper P06-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper introduces a method allowing characterisingthe growth of electrical trees in wire-plane electrodeobjects. By applying both electrical and opticalmeasurements the inception level and the number of treeswere analysed. It is shown that the results observedoptically closely resemble the electrically detected PDbehaviour, thus exhibiting a good correlation betweenboth the methods. This indicates a possibility for analysingelectrical treeing process in non-transparent materialsbased on the electrical measurement only and opens foran efficient approach in evaluating new materials for cableinsulation.

  • Characterising Resistance to Electrical Treeing in New XLPE-Based Materials for High-Voltage Cables
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work looks into electrical treeing in cross-linked polyethylene-based materials (XLPE), where the ability to resist tree development is considered as an indicator of improved applicability for insulation in high voltage power cables. The thesis presents results of a twin PhD project involving joint work of two students. One of the students (author of this thesis with a background in electrical engineering) concentrated on developing new methodology for testing the resistance to electrical treeing in XLPE modified by addition of voltage stabilising agents, while the design and syntheses of these agents was the domain of the second student, Markus Jarvid (having his background in chemical engineering). The latter work has been published in a separate thesis. In contrast to the traditionally used needle-electrode test objects, a wire-electrode geometry has been introduced for creating the highly divergent electric field distribution in the insulation, necessary for initiation of an electrical treeing process. The wire-electrode object has shown a benefit of producing several trees during each individual test, therefore providing more data for further analyses. These objects also allow for exposing a larger volume of the material and let trees incept in weak-spot locations. How to conveniently analyse the resulting treeing data from performed experiments is further analysed in the thesis. To increase the applicability of the elaborated methodology for testing materials characterised by different degree of transparency, optical observations of the treeing process were complimented by simultaneous detection of partial discharges (PDs). Analyses of the latter have allowed an interpretation scheme practical for measuring resistance to treeing in non-transparent materials. To evaluate how voltage stabilisers influence the resistance to treeing in XLPE, a broad range of stabilisers have been identified and tested. A detailed analysis demonstrates a positive effect imposed by addition of 4,4’-didocyloxybenzil. This compound is thereafter compared with the effect of various other stabilisers, including benzil-, thiaxanthone- fullerene- and melamine-types. Finally the stabiliser efficiencies are correlated with molecular ionisation potential and electron affinity, where it has been found that the stabilising efficiency increases with electron affinity of the added molecules. The results from this twin PhD project opens up a possibility to design new types of practically useful voltage stabilisers and test their suitability for improving the insulation in future high voltage cables.

  • Entrepreneurialism - an asset in financial crises : A study of Swedish magazine publishers’ approach to new business development
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The media industry is working in a constant turbulence due to technological advancements in the way media content is produced, spread and consumed. The financial crisis came in the midst of this challenging business environment and was a hard blow for the whole industry. Developing creative and profitable products under such uncertain and difficult circumstances puts the usefulness of traditional strategic principles such as planning and forecasts in question. This paper discuss how Swedish magazine publishers approach new business development and presents preliminary results from a  study of 246 decision makers in 130 Swedish magazine publishing firms. These findings show that they use a logic similar to that of entrepreneurs, a logic which is different from generally applied management theory. It is suggested that having this entrepreneurial approach helps decision makers in the magazine industry to handle uncertainty, induced by financial crises but also induced by the general technological development.

  • Magazine publishers approaching new media : Is it about what we do or how we think?
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • New technology, such as Internet, mobile phones and more recently the new reading devices, have posed many new challenges for the magazine publishing industry for over a decade and will continue to do so. In this paper we explore commonalities among magazine publishers being in the forefront of integrating new media in their businesses. We approach this by combining two streams of management literature, namely capabilities and management cognition. Within the capabilities stream we focus on dynamic capabilities, ie. the routines and practices needed for learning about new domains, creating new asset combinations and building new capabilities in order to match market needs. Within the management cognition stream, we focus on the decision-making logic used; whether it is dominantly based on causal logic (predictive control) or effectual logic (non-predictive control). Hence, we explore both what the magazine publishers do and how they think about new media. A case study of four innovative magazine publishers in Sweden and Finland has been conducted including 33 in-depth interviews. Practices related to business development and the decision making logic behind them has been carefully analyzed to find differences and similarities between the studied firms. The findings increase our understanding of the relationship of capabilities and cognition in approaching new media, and provide important implications for media managers.

  • The role of Entrepreneurial Behavior for Business model development : A study of magazine organizations
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The term business model is widely used in research and in practice, mostly referring to a representation of the logic behind a certain firm’s value creation. Researchers have so far concentrated on clarifying what the business model concept actually means and what it can be useful for. This paper will instead focus on the role of entrepreneurial behavior for the development of business models, by looking into the practices connected to the marketing related components of business models. Results from an explorative study of three Swedish magazine publishers show that entrepreneurial behavior is a driving force for business model development.

    • Effectuation and causation are important modes of entrepreneurial decision-making. In this paper, we extend the literature on effectuation into the corporate context. Based on extant theory concerning both individual decision-makers’ human capital and organizational-level characteristics, we develop and test hypotheses concerning the use of effectuation and causation in pursuing new opportunities in the magazine industry. Our results, based on the actions of 246 key decision-makers, show an inconsistent set of antecedents for causation and the four effectual logic principles. As such, our multi-level study helps to unravel some of the complexities of the choice of decision-making logics.

  • Wire-Plane Electrode System for Electrical Tree Initiation Exposed to AC and DC Voltage Stress
  • 2011

  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Electrical treeing in XLPE exposed to DC (of both polarities) and 50 Hz AC voltages has been analysed in a wire-plane electrode geometry using real-time optical detection and microscopic observations. It has been found that treeing mechanisms differ between AC and DC stresses. For AC voltage, the tree initiation and growth is easily observable in real time during the testing. In the case of DC stress a complete breakdown of the XLPE occurs before electrical trees can be discerned with the use of CCD camera. However, in the microscopic observations of the specimens, very fine tree structures can be distinguished. The effect of voltage ramping rate was also analysed. For AC stress, the faster ramping results in a higher tree inception voltage. The opposite trend is true for DC stress, where the faster ramp results in a lower breakdown voltage level. When comparing the effect on polarity of the DC breakdown voltage, negative polarity results in higher voltage levels than positive polarity.

  • 2018

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chemical interactions that occur between NO, SO2, and ClO2 are investigated. In focus is the oxidation of NO with gaseous ClO2 for simultaneous removal of NOx and SOx from combustion-derived flue gases. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted to examine the conversion of NO to NO2, under the following conditions: temperature range of 100-180 °C; H2O concentrations in the range of 0%-25%; ClO2-NO molar ratios in the range of 0.2-0.6; and NO and SO2 flue gas concentrations in the ranges of 0-250 ppm and 0-1000 ppm, respectively. The results show that NO is oxidized efficiently by ClO2, whereas the ClO2-SO2 reactions are insignificant. The water concentration had no effect on oxidation, and the temperature had a limited effect, within the investigated ranges. The outcomes favor the process economics of the studied application, since ClO2 consumption is negligible with respect to SO2 oxidation.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of coabsorption of NO2 and SO2 from flue gases, in combination with the enhanced oxidation of NO by ClO2(g), is studied on three scales, 0.2, 100, and 400 N m3/h, all with flue gases of different origins. The results obtained from each setup are presented, together with modeling that was applied to assess the scale-up of the concept and to validate the model. The measurements confirm that ClO2 is highly selective toward NO oxidation for temperatures in the range of 70-155 °C. A comparison of the results obtained for each scale reveals that the 0.2 N m3/h setup confers a higher level of NOx absorption than the other setups, although the trends remain similar. Simulations of the results underpredict the level of NO2 absorption in the 0.2 N m3/h setup while capturing the levels of absorption in the 100 N m3/h setup. An important finding is the rapid and complete oxidation of S(IV) in the presence of NO2, which is not represented in the reaction kinetics.

    • In this paper, we address issues related to the measurement of effectuation. We identify and examine 81 empirical studies focusing on research tensions (fundamental assumptions, theoretical underpinnings, boundary conditions, units of analyses, measures, and temporal issues) within the effectuation literature. Our findings suggest these tensions inhibit the accumulation of empirical knowledge. We highlight the challenges involved in effectively measuring effectuation and offer solutions and recommendations for systematic knowledge accumulation.

  • Ingår i: Water research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-2448 .- 0043-1354. ; 189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SARS-CoV-2 was discovered among humans in Wuhan, China in late 2019, and then spread rapidly, causing a global pandemic. The virus was found to be transmitted mainly by respiratory droplets from infected persons or by direct contact. It was also shown to be excreted in feces, why we investigated whether the virus could be detected in wastewater and if so, to which extent its levels reflects its spread in society. Samples of wastewater from the city of Gothenburg, and surrounding municipalities in Sweden were collected daily from mid-February until June 2020 at the Rya wastewater treatment plant. Flow proportional samples of wastewater were collected to ensure that comparable amounts were obtained for analysis. Daily samples were pooled into weekly samples. Virus was concentrated on a filter and analyzed by RT-qPCR. The amount of SARS-CoV-2 varied with peaks approximately every four week, preceding variations in number of newly hospitalized patients by 19-21 days. At that time virus testing for COVID-19 was limited to patients with severe symptoms. Local differences in viral spread was shown by analyzing weekly composite samples of wastewater from five sampling sites for four weeks. The highest amount of virus was found from the central, eastern, and northern parts of the city. SARS-CoV-2 was also found in the treated effluent wastewater from the WWTP discharged into the recipient, the Göta River, although with a reduction of 4-log10. The viral peaks with regular temporal intervals indicated that SARS-CoV-2 may have a cluster spread, probably reflecting that the majority of infected persons only spread the disease during a few days. Our results are important for both the planning of hospital care and to rapidly identify and intervene against local spread of the virus.
