- From 2012 to 2016 all teachers of mathematics, in primary through to upper secondary and adult education, in Sweden are to be given the opportunity of receiving state-coordinated professional development (PD), generally involving around one meeting per week for a year. We examine the ways in which this programme and its content are research-based by analysing the design principles of the PD and its content via a review of the underlying documents. We find that the research base for the design of the PD decisions is formulated only partly explicitly in the documentation, as is the case for the content. Nevertheless, the principles still largely conform to internationally recognised research-based models for PD and teacher change. In the discussion we propose that a relatively open design process, involving many stakeholders with knowledge of both theory and practice rather than an analytical examination of previous research, has contributed to the adoption of this format for the PD programme. © 2014, FIZ Karlsruhe.

- Properties of an on-chip photovoltaic nanodevice are demonstrated. The dyes comprise green florescent proteins(GFP). Dependence of recently reported zero external potential bias (ZEPB) photocurrent (I) on temperature,power, and wavelength (λ) is shown. Correlation between UV-vis spectrum of the GFP and the ZEPB I(λ)of the device is reported. The temperature dependence suggests the ZEPB photocurrent to reflect a liquidcrystal type ordering where the current declines monotonically with increasing temperature. The influence ofan external bias on the photocurrent is demonstrated. The resulting light-induced current is analyzed in termsof resistive and quantum mechanical contributions.

Dyspnea experience in patients with lung cancer in palliative care

- The aim of this study was to describe the dyspnea experience and examine its relation to other symptoms, personal and health-related factors and its predictors in patients with lung cancer. The subjects were 105 patients diagnosed with lung cancer, approached when active anti-tumour treatment was closed. The patients completed a battery of questionnaires about several aspects of dyspnea experience, intensity of other symptoms and coping capacity. Medical data including performance status were obtained from medical records. Above 50% of the patients perceived dyspnea. Coping capacity, performance status and other symptoms correlated with different aspects of dyspnea experience. Dyspnea dimensions and activity-related dyspnea correlated with anxiety, depression, fatigue and cough as well as negatively to coping capacity. Performance status correlated with dyspnea intensity and activity-related dyspnea. Lower coping capacity predicted dyspnea; additional predictors were higher levels of anxiety and fatigue. Dyspnea in this group of patients was a complex experience, including physical and psychological aspects and should preferably be assessed in a comprehensive way. A nursing intervention to decrease dyspnea experience and anxiety could use knowledge from this study about the importance of coping capacity to better help patients with lung cancer to cope in their palliative phase of the disease

- The aims of the study were to investigate lung cancer patients' quality of life (QoL) over time in a palliative setting and to determine how QoL is influenced by symptoms, coping capacity, and social support. One hundred and five consecutive patients with incurable lung cancer were included. A comprehensive set of questionnaires was used at baseline, including the Assessment of Quality of Life at the End of Life, Cancer Dyspnea Scale, Visual Analog Scale of Dyspnea, Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale, Sense of Coherence Questionnaire, and Social Support Survey, of which the first four were used also at three, six, nine, and 12 months. Dyspnea, depression, and global QoL deteriorated over time. Performance status, anxiety, depression, components of dyspnea, pain, and the meaningfulness component of coping capacity correlated with global QoL at all, or all but one follow-up measurements. In a multivariate analysis with global QoL as the dependent variable, depression was a significant predictor at four out of five assessments, whereas coping capacity, anxiety, performance status, pain, and social support entered the model at one or two assessments. Emotional distress and coping capacity influence QoL and might be targets for intervention in palliative care.

- We report on the successful covalent functionalization of carbon nanotube (CNT) forests, in situ grown on a silicon chip with thin metal contact film as the buffer layer between the CNT forests and the substrate. The CNT forests were successfully functionalized with active amine and azide groups, which can be used for further chemical reactions. The morphology of the CNT forests was maintained after the functionalization. We thus provide a promising foundation for a miniaturized biosensor arrays system that can be easily integrated with Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology.

- Non-natural peptides with structures and functions similar to natural peptides have emerged lately in biomedical as well as nanotechnological contexts. They are interesting for pharmaceutical applications since they can adopt structures with new targeting potentials and because they are generally not prone to degradation by proteases. We report here a new set of peptidomimetics derived from -peptides, consisting of n units of a 1,5-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole amino acid (5Tzl). The monomer was prepared using ruthenium-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (RuAAC) chemistry using [RuCl2Cp*](x) as the catalyst, allowing for simpler purification and resulting in excellent yields. This achiral monomer was used to prepare peptide oligomers that are water soluble independent of peptide chain length. Conformational analysis and structural investigations of the oligomers were performed by 2D NOESY NMR experiments, and by quantum chemical calculations using the B97X-D functional. These data indicate that several conformations may co-exist with slight energetic differences. Together with their increased hydrophilicity, this feature of homo-5Tzl may prove essential for mimicking natural peptides composed of -amino acids, where the various secondary structures are achieved by side chain effects and not by the rigidity of the peptide backbone. The improved synthetic method allows for facile variation of the 5Tzl amino acid side chains, further increasing the versatility of these compounds.

- An experimentally simple sequential one-pot RuAAC reaction, affording 1,5-disubstituted 1H-1,2,3-triazoles in good to excellent yields starting from; an alkyl halide, sodium azide, and an alkyne, is reported. The organic azide is formed in situ by treating the primary alkyl halide with sodium azide in DMA under microwave heating. Subsequent addition of [RuClCp*-(PPh3)(2)] and the alkyne yielded the desired cycloaddition product after further microwave irradiation.

- A high-sensitivity linear dichroism (LD) technique has been employed in studying the indirect orientation of benzene by solubilization in rod-shaped micelles in a system of cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB): water, oriented by flow in a couvette device. The dependence of the LD signal due to the π-π* transitions in the benzene plane on the temperature, on the shear gradient and on the benzene concentration, has been investigated. The net positive LD, observed from the benzene chromophore, derives from benzene orientation at the surface of the rod-shaped micelles. The orientation of the micelle rods is very high and the system is suggested for use as a standard matrix for studying solubilized molecules in polarized spectroscopy.

- A complex with the composition Cr(THt1̄)3 (T = RR-tartrate2−) has been characterised in solutions with excess of tartrate by circular dichroism (CD) and potentiometric data. The CD shows peaks ϵ1 - ϵr/M−1cm−1 of +4.60 at 570 nm and −0.80 at 655 nm. Together with stereochemical considerations this strongly indicates that the complex Cr(RR-TH−1)3 takes the Λ configuration. The partially protonated forms show less pronounced stereoselectivity.

- Context: Molecular oxygen, O2, has been expected historically to be an abundant component of the chemical species in molecular clouds and, as such, an important coolant of the dense interstellar medium. However, a number of attempts from both ground and from space have failed to detect O2 emission.Aims: The work described here uses heterodyne spectroscopy from space to search for molecular oxygen in the interstellar medium. Methods: The Odin satellite carries a 1.1 m sub-millimeter dish and a dedicated 119 GHz receiver for the ground state line of O2. Starting in 2002, the star forming molecular cloud core ρ Oph A was observed with Odin for 34 days during several observing runs.Results: We detect a spectral line at v_LSR =+3.5 km s-1 with Δ v_FWHM=1.5 km s-1, parameters which are also common to other species associated with ρ Oph A. This feature is identified as the O2 (NJ = 11 - 1_0) transition at 118 750.343 MHz.Conclusions: The abundance of molecular oxygen, relative to H{2} , is 5 × 10-8 averaged over the Odin beam. This abundance is consistently lower than previously reported upper limits.Based on observations with Odin, a Swedish-led satellite project funded jointly by the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes) and Centre National d'Étude Spatiale (CNES). - This study aims to fertilize research on parental mediation with the importance of parents’ media attitudes in terms of parental third-person effects and its varieties. The explanatory power of these perceptions on behavioral consequences as types of parental mediation is analyzed with control for previously known factors. Data from a cross-sectional population survey in Sweden 2011 covered a representative sample of children, aged 2-17 years in total 1461. The results show that the parental second-person perceptions explain (i.e., general belief in media effects) more than parental third-person perceptions. Parental second-person perceptions together with the age of the child explain most of the restrictive mediation and the effects of parental second-person perceptions on restrictive mediation increase with the parents lesser control of the media type.
