  • Families' importance in nursing care : nurses' attitudes - an instrument development
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Nursing. - Thousand Oaks : Sage Publications. - 1074-8407 .- 1552-549X. ; 14:1, s. 97-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes the development and testing of a research instrument, Families' Importance in Nursing Care-Nurses' Attitudes (FINC-NA), designed to measure nurses' attitudes about the importance of involving families in nursing care. The instrument was inductively developed from a literature review and tested with a sample of Swedish nurses. An item-total correlation and a first principal component analysis were used to validate the final instrument, including a second principal component analysis to analyze dimensionality, and Cronbach's alpha was used to estimate internal consistency. The instrument consists of 26 items and reveals four factors: families as a resource in nursing care, family as a conversational partner, family as a burden, and family as its own resource. Cronbach's alpha was 0.88 for the total instrument and 0.69 to 0.80 for the subscales. The instrument requires further testing with other nurse populations.

  • Families in home care - a resource or a burden? : district nurses' beliefs
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 13:7, s. 867-875
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Caring for families in home care is a growing part of Swedish district nurses' professional work. District nurses' facilitative and constraining beliefs about families guide the extent to which families are acknowledged and engaged in the care. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to explore district nurses' beliefs about families in home care. DESIGN: Explorative, descriptive. METHODS: Five district nurses participated in focus group interviews on three separate occasions. Each interview lasted approximately 90 minutes, was audio taped and transcribed verbatim. A thematic content analysis was used for analyses of the data. RESULTS: The result revealed two underpinning beliefs held by the district nurses towards families in home care: families are a resource and Families are a burden. Families could be a resource for the patient, for the other family members as well as for the district nurses themselves. Families could be a resource for the patient both practically and emotionally by e.g. being present and listening. Being open in communication with other family members and district nurses was also considered as a resource. The district nurses considered families as a burden when they were experienced as demanding in various ways, for example, when family members did not act in a way that pleased the district nurses or when family members showed their suffering. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlight some facilitating and constraining beliefs held by district nurses: families can be both a resource and a burden. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: It is important that district nurses are aware of what beliefs they hold as their beliefs guide their actions towards the families.

  • Nurses' attitudes about the importance of families in nursing care : a survey of Swedish nurses
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Nursing. - : SAGE Publications. - 1074-8407 .- 1552-549X. ; 14:2, s. 162-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of registered nurses (RNs) about the importance of involving families in nursing care. A sample of 634 randomly selected Swedish RNs completed the instrument, Families' Importance in Nursing Care-Nurses' Attitudes (FINC-NA), and reported holding supportive attitudes about families. High scores were found for the subscales: family as a resource in nursing care, family as a conversational partner, family as a burden, and family as its own resource. Variables that predicted a less supportive attitude about involving families in nursing care included being a newly graduated nurse, having no general approach to the care of families at the place of work, and being a male nurse.

  • The significance of families in nursing care
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 7th International Family Nursing Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The aim of thé study was to investigate Swedish nurses1 attitudes to thé significance of families in nursing care. Method: An instrument (FAMBO), based on a research literature review, was developed by thé researchers. The instrument consists of 60 items about nurses' attitudes to thé significance of families in nursing care, i.e. for thé patients, thé family members and for thé nurses. The items include nurses' thoughts, feelings and actions in relation to, for example, engagement, communication, information and family resources. During May 2004, thé questionnaire was posted to 1000 nurses randomly sampled from The Swedish Association of Health Professionals' list of members, excluding administrators, teachers and retired nurses. After two reminders, we received 709 instruments, of which 50 were unanswered. The response rate was 66% (n = 659). The analysis, descriptive and analytic statistics, has just begun (Nov, 2004). The study is a co-operation between Kalmar University and The Swedish Association of Health Professionals. Results: At thé conférence, nurses' attitudes to thé significance of families in nursing care will be presented, for example, in relation to âge, organizational form and in relation to nurses' areas of work. Conclusion: The resuit of this study will be a part of thé foundation for further development of family nursing in Sweden.

  • Community participation and social patterning in cardiovascular disease intervention
  • 1993
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study addresses health policy and public health in the field of cardiovascular disease (CVD) on the local level in Sweden. The overall aim is to contribute to the assessment of structural and social conditions within public health by analysing participation processes and outcome patterns in a local health programme. The northern Swedish MONICA study served as a reference area. The research strategy has been to integrate quantitative and  qualitative methodologies and, thereby, focus on different aspects of the health programme under study. The mortality rate was excessive in the study area of Norsjö relative to both provincial and national figures over a period of more than 10 years. This finding formed the basis for a tenyear comprehensive and community-based health programme towards the prevention of CVD and diabetes.Even in this seemingly homogeneous area it was found that socio-economic circumstances were associated with the public health. Almost half of the study population had hypercholesterolaemia (;>6.5 mmol/1), 19% of men and 25% of women were smokers and 30% and 29%, respectively, had high blood pressure. Age had a strong impact on all outcome measures. After adjustments for age and social factors it was found that the relative risk of having hypercholesterolaemia dropped significantly in both sexes during the six years of intervention. The probability of being a smoker was significantly reduced only in highly educated groups. No statistically significant change over time could be found for the risk of suffering high blood pressure. In the reference area of northern Sweden there were no changes over time for any of the selected risk factors. The likelihood of self-assessed good health decreased with increasing risk factor load, with the exception of hypercholesterolaemia , in all social strata. The authorities, including the health and medical staff, were the main actors on the mediastage. Men in manual occupations were least affected by the media coverage. The actors and the public as well as the media viewed the health programme as orientated towards individual lifestyles. Community participation was mainly defined by the actors based on the medical and health planning approach. Differences in interpretations, social interests, personal conflicts and ideological constraints among the actors at local level were observed. Some critical attitudes towards the organization and management of the health programme were also noted among the citizens. However, a majority of the public wanted the health programme to continue. The present study underlines the importance of considering age, gender and social differences in the planning and evaluation of CVD preventive programmes.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. To explore adaptation patterns among disability pensioners with musculoskeletal disorders returning to work by means of the Swedish law on 'resting disability pension'. Method. Qualitative analyses of interviews with 17 individuals going back to work. Results. Three adaptation patterns were identified: The Go- getter, the Realist and the Indifferent. These differed regarding influence factors, own expectations, motive, morals and mentality. Conclusion. Several actors may support a return to work for individuals who received a disability pension due to musculoskeletal disorders. In order to succeed, however, it is essential that the disability pensioner is motivated for a reconstruction of his/ her life.

  • Return to work still possible after several years as a disability pensioner due to musculoskeletal disorders : a population-based study after new legislation in Sweden permitting "resting disability pension"
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Work. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 26:2, s. 147-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different strategies have been used to stimulate a return to work (RTW) among individuals suffering from long-term ailments. In Sweden a new law on "resting disability pension" permits disability pensioners to go back to work without jeopardising their benefits. In this study different variables related to RTW during 2000 by means of this legislation were identified among disability pensioners with musculoskeletal disorders. Individuals in the study group, when compared to a control group, had more often been disability pensioners for several years, had additional education, estimated their previous job to have been physically strenuous to a lesser degree, were more satisfied with the treatment at the social insurance office and had a more positive self-image. This study shows that it may be meaningful to continue/resume rehabilitation efforts and to try to motivate an individual suffering from musculoskeletal disorders to return to work even after several years as a disability pensioner.

  • Vad, hur och varför i slöjdämnet : textillärares uppfattningar om innehåll och undervisning i relation till kursplanen
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis deals with questions of how the purpose and content in the Swedish school subject Sloyd can be understood in the present, some years after a new curriculum came into effect in 2011. Through sloyd teachers’ stories of their knowledge and the historical traces that have left a mark on their teaching, such as older syllabuses and mediated experiences, the intention is to examine the pedagogical thinking that forms the classroom’s activities. The overall purpose is to develop knowledge of what shapes the design of sloyd, based on how the subject is expressed in the syllabus and in teachers' understandings of teaching and the subject. Based on previous knowledge and interviews, a hermeneutic research process has been designed and developed over time. Seventeen semi-structured interviews with textiles teachers where conducted, recorded and transcribed for the study. The hermeneutic interpretation process involved repeatedly reading and listening, and the material was coded using the digital analysis tool ATLAS.ti. Through repeated reading of the codes, three overarching themes were found: Textiles teachers' perceptions of Sloyd’s purpose and content, Textiles teachers’ teaching, and Manual and intellectual work in unity. The perspective of curriculum theory using a frame factor model is intended to highlight how Sloyd manifests itself at different levels of interpretation, which may impact how sloyd takes shape in the classroom. For a functional perspective on the study's data, didactic theory is used with a focus on subject didactics. The transformation phase is central to the shaping of Sloyd, where teachers’ beliefs and perceptions about the subject will influence their interpretation of the syllabus. Shulman's model of pedagogical thinking and action linked to pedagogical content knowledge, PCK, form the basis for the analysis together with theoretical perspectives on teachers’ pedagogical thinking as Kansanen and Hansén describes it. In summary, two levels of pedagogical thinking are distinguished by analysis. Firstly, based on those teachers who transform and implement teaching in sloyd based on an interpretation that follows the syllabus closely, and secondly, based on those who proceed from an interpretation that is closer to sloyd’s field of knowledge, based on handicraft. This results in two subject conceptions relating to sloyd. Teachers can ascribe to one of these, or move between them in the different phases of pedagogical planning and reflection. The conclusions also include an understanding of why the knowledge requirements in the syllabus largely relate to the students expressing themselves in words regarding their learning and their choices during the process. The curriculum is results-oriented and the knowledge that is evaluated must therefore be measurable and comparable, and be made possible to learn through the subject content. It can also be interpreted as an approximation of a practical knowledge culture to a theoretical knowledge culture, and therefore a legitimation of a practical subject in the school context that elementary school constitutes.

  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation characterises the Swedish architect Agi Lindegren (1858-1927) who practicedarchitecture and design approx. 1886-1908. The introduction provides a general background bydiscussing the relationship between decorative art and architecture. It shows the signal importance ofdecoration in architectural practice in the 19th century. Decoration was considered to serve manypurposes, it gave a building artistic value, and also intellectual content by its symbolic and metaphoric significance, both architecturally, culturally and socially. To create coherency and sense in thedecorative scheme the architects returned to the classical concept of decorum, appropriateness, inwhich hierarchy was an important structuring element reflecting not only social but also structuralconcerns. The main text of thedissertation has a tripartite structure: first it gives a short account ofLindegren's life, second it presents his professional practice from a sociologic viewpoint and third itgives an interpretation of his works. The areas discussed include architecture, mural works, anddomestic and church interior design. The analysis deals with Lindegren's works in the light ofcontemporary architectural theory and practice as stated above, as well as other important contextualcircumstances. The stylistic character of Lindegren's works in all areas reflects his attempts to attainthe appropriate.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter contextualizes Linnaeus achievements with some examples of the intellectual and physical environments that formed the prerequisites of his work and then discusses some heritage aspects. Several cultural and natural heritage sites across the world are connected to each other via Linnaeus and his disciples. This chapter focuses some of those places in Sweden, showing how they influenced and inspired Linnaeus in a seminal way, and why they merit wider recognition. It is also discussed what role they have played for the promotion of Linneaus' reputation in our time and how they have been used in a heritigization process centred on Linneaus. Visual art works of different kinds have also contributed to this process and their role is also part of this discussion.
