  • Particle physics at the European Spallation Source
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 1023, s. 1-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world’s brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

  • Multi-Decadal Changes in Tundra Environments and Ecosystems : Synthesis of the International Polar Year-Back to the Future Project (IPY-BTF)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40:6, s. 705-716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the responses of tundra systemsto global change has global implications. Most tundraregions lack sustained environmental monitoring and oneof the only ways to document multi-decadal change is toresample historic research sites. The International PolarYear (IPY) provided a unique opportunity for such researchthrough the Back to the Future (BTF) project (IPY project#512). This article synthesizes the results from 13 paperswithin this Ambio Special Issue. Abiotic changes includeglacial recession in the Altai Mountains, Russia; increasedsnow depth and hardness, permafrost warming, andincreased growing season length in sub-arctic Sweden;drying of ponds in Greenland; increased nutrient availabilityin Alaskan tundra ponds, and warming at mostlocations studied. Biotic changes ranged from relativelyminor plant community change at two sites in Greenland tomoderate change in the Yukon, and to dramatic increasesin shrub and tree density on Herschel Island, and in subarcticSweden. The population of geese tripled at one sitein northeast Greenland where biomass in non-grazed plotsdoubled. A model parameterized using results from a BTFstudy forecasts substantial declines in all snowbeds andincreases in shrub tundra on Niwot Ridge, Colorado overthe next century. In general, results support and provideimproved capacities for validating experimental manipulation, remote sensing, and modeling studies.

  • A move to the local? : The relevance of a local welfare system approach
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Combating Poverty in Local Welfare Systems : active inclusion strategies in European cities - active inclusion strategies in European cities. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137531902 - 9781137531896 ; , s. 1-29
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fighting poverty and promoting active inclusion is a major challenge for most European welfare states. This chapter argues that much current welfare research has focused on national policies and systems despite most anti-poverty strategies are put into practice at local level. The chapter explores the local welfare system approach and maintains that it is important to study the role public and civil society actors play and local strategies against poverty, what welfare governance arrangements that prevail in contacts between them and how local welfare systems are connected to higher levels of steering and regulation. The chapter reviews existing research on welfare and social assistance regimes and presents the five local cases to be studied in the volume.

  • Strategies against poverty in a Social democratic local Welfare system: : still the responsibility of public actors?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Combating Poverty in Local Welfare Systems : inclusion strategies in European cities - inclusion strategies in European cities. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137531896 - 9781137531902 ; , s. 155-179
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter analyses local strategies against poverty and social exclusion in Sweden, often seen as illustrative of a Social democratic welfare regime. The chapter addresses whether public actors play such a significant role in local anti-poverty strategies as established regime-debates suggest. Empirical investigations cover patterns of coordination between the social assistance system and activation services at local level as well as the functions local civil society organisations fulfil in providing the poor with support and services. Our findings show that despite extensive local autonomy and high pressure on the social assistance system, civil society actors play a limited role in the local welfare system. The local welfare system is furthermore characterized by extensive coordination problems between forms of minimum income support and local activation services.

  • Comparison of Multiplierless Implementation of Nonlinear-Phase Versus Linear-Phase FIR filters
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • FIR filters are often used because of their linear-phase response. However, there are certain applications where the linear-phase property is not required, such as signal energy estimation, but IIR filters can not be used due to the limitation of sample rate imposed by the recursive algorithm. In this work, we discuss multiplierless implementation of minimum order, and therefore nonlinear-phase, FIR filters and compare it to the linear-phase counterpart.

  • Glutamate NMDAR1 receptors localised to nerves in human Achilles tendons. Implications for treatment?
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0942-2056 .- 1433-7347. ; 9:2, s. 123-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this investigation, we show the presence of both free glutamate (microdialysis) and glutamate NMDAR1 receptors (immunohistochemical analyses of tendon biopsies), in tendons from patients with chronic Achilles tendon pain (Achilles tendinosis) and in controls (pain-free tendons). The NMDAR1 immunoreaction was usually confined to acetylcholinesterase-positive structures, implying that the reaction is present in nerves. Glutamate is a potent pain mediator in the human central nervous system, and in animals it has been shown that peripherally administered glutamate NMDA receptor antagonists diminish the response to formalin-induced nociception. Our present finding of glutamate NMDA receptors in human Achilles tendons might have implications for pain treatment.

  • Assessment of Whether Patients' Knowledge, Satisfaction, and Experience Regarding Their 18F-Fluoride PET/CT Examination Affects Image Quality
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Medicine Technology. - : Society of Nuclear Medicine. - 0091-4916 .- 1535-5675. ; 44:1, s. 21-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate patients’ previous knowledge, satisfaction and experience regarding a (18F)-fluoride positron emission tomography / computed tomography examination ((18F)-fluoride PET/CT) and to explore whether experienced discomfort during the examination or pain was associated with reduced image quality. A further aim was to explore whether patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was associated with their satisfaction and experiences of the examination. Methods: Fifty consecutive patients with a histopathological diagnosis of prostate cancer who were scheduled for (18F)-fluoride PET/CT were asked to participate in the study, which was performed between November 2011 and April 2013. A questionnaire was used to collect information regarding the patients’ previous knowledge and experience of the examination. Image quality assessment was performed according to an arbitrary scale. The EORTC-QLQ-C30 and QLQ-PR25 were used to assess HRQoL.Results: Forty-six patients (96%) completed the questionnaires. Twenty-six per cent of participants did not know at all what a (18F)-fluoride PET/CT examination was. The majority (52-70%) were to a very high degree satisfied with the care provided by the nursing staff but less satisfied with the information given prior to the examination. The image quality was similar in patients who were exhausted or claustrophobic during the examination and those who were not. No correlations between HRQoL and the participants’ experience of (18F)-fluoride PET/CT were found. Conclusion: The majority of participants were satisfied with the care provided by the nursing staff, but there is still room for improvement especially regarding the information prior to the examination. Long examination time may be strenuous, for the patient but there was no difference in image quality between patients who felt discomfort during the examination or pain and those who did not.

  • Patient Experience of an 18F-FDG-PET/CT Examination: : Need for Improvements in Patient Care
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Radiology Nursing. - : Elsevier. - 1546-0843. ; 34:2, s. 100-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of this study were to investigate the patients' knowledge about and experience of an 18F-fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) examination and to investigate the self-reported feelings of stress, level of physical activity, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and to find out if this was related to how they experienced the examination. A cross-sectional survey was used to collect information on 198 patients with known or suspected malignancy. As many as 32% to 63% were satisfied with the nursing staff, the communication, and the professional skills. Most patients did not know beforehand what an FDG-PET/CT examination was. The HRQoL, level of perceived stress, and physical activity were relatively low. A better HRQoL, lower level of perceived stress, and a higher level of physical activity were correlated to a more positive experience and higher education to more knowledge about the examination (p < .01–.05). The information before the examination needs to be improved. The results may be used to improve patient care and optimize imaging procedures.

  • Civil Society Organisations in National and Local welfare: Investigating three metropolitan areas in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the ISTR conference in Stockholm, 28 June - 1 Aug 2016..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Voluntary organizations as well as market based for-profit actors have generally held a marginal position in producing welfare services for the larger population and in Sweden the main role and function for voluntary sector organizations has been to act as political agents (Lundström & Svedberg 2003; Svedberg & Olsson 2010; Wollebeak & Selle 2008; Selle & Wollebaek 2010). Recent research however stresses that this balance is changing in terms of gradual shifts ‘from voice to service’ or ‘from members to volunteers’ and an increase in professionalization among voluntary organizations (Wijkström & Einarsson 2006; Papakostas 2004; Svedberg & Olsson 2010). Financial support has been steered towards fulfilling public goods and politically defined usage (‘value for money’) and less as support for organizational development (Danielsson et al 2009). Whereas such model changes are discussed in several European countries few studies seek to investigate changing governance mo dels and state-voluntary sector relations at local level, despite it is at local level policies are put into practise. In this paper we explore local welfare systems as reconditions for the structure, size and roles of civil society organizations operating within the social welfare field. A specific aim is to analyze how local governments affect the local settings for civil society organizations, which includes providing explanations on variations among municipalities. The paper draws on case studies in the three metropolitan cities in Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg and M almö) and shows similarities between the cities local policies and governance arrangements, yet quite different policies and governance arrangements regarding their role as producing social services. The City of Malmö follows a Social democratic model with limited outsourcing and contracting out and involvement of CSOs as service providers. The City of Gothenburg follows a coportaist model in which a few CSOs are selected as providers. The City of Stockholm has developed a liberal market-oriented model in which CSOs are expected to compete with companies. The results of the case studies illuminate that importance of supplementing the national level analysis with analysis of local welfare systems. The article contributes to our understanding of local governments role as orchestrators of the CSOs and also to our understanding of the development of local welfare systems.

  • Local civil society regimes : Liberal, corporatist and social democratic civil society regimes in Swedish metropolitan cities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Voluntary Sector Review. - Bristol, England : Policy Press. - 2040-8056 .- 2040-8064. ; 9:1, s. 3-20:On line 08 March, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academic debates on the role and position of civil society organisations (CSOs) in welfare states largely refer to policies and practices outlined at the national level. They therefore fail to recognise variations within nations. Based on a comparative case study of three Swedish metropolitan cities, this article illustrates the importance of local, contextualised analyses. Through the concept of local civil society regimes, the study identifies three regime types, namely liberal, corporatist and social democratic. The key distinguishing factor between them relates to their different ideological positions regarding the role of CSOs in the marketisation and privatisation of public social welfare represented at the local level. The article argues for the need for further analysis to explore the implications of decentralisation from the perspective of local CSOs and their constituencies.

  • Adjusting Initiation Direction to Domains of Rock Mass Discontinuities in Aitik Open Pit Mine
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 11th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting. - Carlton, Vic : The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. - 9781925100327 ; , s. 385-391
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As demand for optimisation of mining processes increases, more attention is drawn to blast performance and fragmentation improvement. Fractures and discontinuities are among the most influential factors in blast results, therefore one of the initial steps towards blast optimisation is to gather information about the rock mass and integrate it in blast design. This paper presents a method for assessment of rock mass discontinuities and integrating it in production blasts in the Aitik open pit copper mine in Sweden. 3D photogrammetric techniques were utilised to map discontinuities and distinguish domains of similar geologic structures in the pit. As a pilot study for a future campaign, four different initiation directions were tested through six pilot blasts in one of the domains. The results were compared in terms of swell and loading efficiency of rope shovels to identify the correlation between blast performance and initiation direction compared to major discontinuity families. It was established that in the trial domain, blasts initiated towards north or north-west yielded larger swell and better performance of loading. Comparing these blasts with discontinuity families show that there is a correlation between blast performance and initiation direction according to the dip and strike of these discontinuities. Such knowledge can be used for future blasts in the same domain to increase long-term operational efficiency through slight modifications in drill pattern and initiation design.

  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The conference Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media (NorLit 2009)was held at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, August 6–9, 2009. The conference was organized by the Nordic Association for Comparative Literature (NorLit); the Department of Culture and Communication, Linköping University; the School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH); the Department of Comparative Literature, Stockholm University; the Department of Culture and Communication, Södertörn University College; and the Department of Comparative Literature, Uppsala University.    The aim of the conference was to develop the study of Comparative Literature through Nordic collaboration both in its own discipline and in Modern Language and Cultural studies. As the title for the conference suggests, the principal question for the conference was the challenge that the study of literature encounters in an age of digitalization and globalization. It was our aim to encourage discussion of how literary studies respond to the ongoing changes in media and technology, politics and economy. Many have argued that the Humanities currently are in a state of crisis. We believe that the discipline seldom has found itself in such an interesting and fruitful historical moment. Several of these questions have surfaced during earlier media system changes, in particular during Romanticism and Modernism, which provided the conference with an historical frame. The conference Codex and Code also addressed questions of authenticity and originality, identity and gender, literary genres and reading practices, media and materiality, culture and popular culture, language and history, world literature, work aesthetics, translations, and canon formation.    The conference Codex and Code wanted to stimulate interdisciplinary scholarly research of the literary in a broad sense. The conference was open to scholars in Comparative Literature and in Classical and Modern Languages, Aesthetics, Media and Communication studies, Film and Theatre studies, Philosophy and adjacent disciplines. The conference was organized around a number of thematic sessions in which researchers and scholars presented and discussed papers.    The conference has received generous financial support from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, Magnus Bergwall foundation, Granholms foundation, Linköping University, School of Computer Science and Communication, Royal Institute of Technology, Svenska litteratursällskapet; the Swedish Academy, Swedish Science Council, and Vitterhetsakademien.

  • Effects of a low-carbohydrate high polyunsaturated fat diet or a healthy Nordic diet versus usual care on liver fat content and cardiometabolic risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes: a randomized controlled trial (NAFLDiet)
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Previous trials have shown that plant-derived polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in place of saturated fat reduces liver fat, a prerequisite for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The effect on liver fat from a novel “anti-lipogenic diet” replacing carbohydrates with PUFA or a healthy Nordic diet (HND) higher in whole-grains but lower in saturated fat has not yet been examined. Objectives: To investigate the effects on changes in liver fat (primary outcome) and other cardiometabolic risk factors after 12 months of follow-up in individuals with prediabetes or T2D from three different diet comparisons: a low carbohydrate high PUFA (LCPUFA) diet versus a HND, a LCPUFA diet versus usual care (UC) and a HND versus UC. Methods: A three-arm parallel ad libitum randomized trial was conducted. Adult men and women (n=148) were randomized to one of the three diet groups. Participants in all groups received key food items on a monthly/bimonthly basis. Liver fat and cardiometabolic risk factors were assessed at baseline and after 12 months. Dietary adherence was assessed using weighed food diaries and objective biomarkers. General linear models were employed to estimate the intention-to-treat (ITT) effect. Results: Dietary adherence was high for all diet groups. Liver fat was reduced to a similar extent in the LCPUFA and the HND group compared to UC (-1.46% (95% CI: -2.42, -0.51)) and -1.76 % (95% CI: -2.96, -0.57), respectively. No difference in liver fat between LCPUFA and HND was observed. Body weight and HbA1c decreased more in the HND compared to the other diet groups whereas no differences were observed between LCPUFA and UC. Similar reductions in LDL-cholesterol were observed for the HND and the LCPUFA group compared to UC, but only the HND reduced triglycerides and C-reactive protein (CRP) compared with UC. No differences were observed for any other secondary outcomes. Conclusions: A LCPUFA diet and a HND both reduced liver fat as compared with UC. Given the sustained weight loss after the HND compared to the other groups, together with improvements in other cardiometabolic markers, the HND in particular seems to be useful for the treatment of T2D and NAFLD.

  • Implementation of polyphase decomposed FIR filters for interpolation and decimation using multiple constant multiplication techniques
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems,2006. - Piscataway : IEEE. ; , s. 924-927
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple constant multiplication (MCM), i.e., realizing a number of constant multiplications using a minimum number of adders and subtracters, has been an active research area for the last decade. Almost all work has been focused on single rate FIR filters. However, for polyphase interpolation and decimation FIR filters there are two different implementation alternatives. For interpolation, direct form subfilters lead to fewer registers as they can be shared among the subfilters. The arithmetic part corresponds to a matrix vector multiplication. Using transposed direct form subfilters, the registers can not be shared, while the arithmetic part has the same input to all coefficients, and, hence, the redundancy between the coefficients is expected to be higher. For decimation filters the opposite holds for direct form and transposed direct form subfilters. In this work we discuss the trade-off between adders/subtracters and registers, and present implementation results for area, speed, and power for different realizations

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectiveOur primary objective was to determine the proportion of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) eligible for enrollment in a randomized controlled trial for a novel oral anticoagulant, the ARISTOTLE trial. A secondary objective was to describe the reasons for trial ineligibility.MethodsWe performed a cross-sectional study of an unselected population including 2274 patients in Skelleftea, Sweden with at least one verified episode of AF on or before December 31, 2010. Patients were classified as suitable or unsuitable for anticoagulant treatment according to current guidelines. The enrollment criteria from the ARISTOTLE trial were extracted from the original publication and applied to the population.ResultsAmong all patients with AF, 1579 were classified as suitable for anticoagulant treatment. Of these, only 658 patients (42%) were eligible for participation in the ARISTOTLE trial. Among the 921 patients ineligible for participation, 498 did not meet the ECG criteria, 272 had psychosocial problems, and in addition, 78 patients were excluded due to both of these criteria.ConclusionOur study shows that a majority of the patients in an unselected population with AF suitable for anticoagulant treatment were ineligible for participation in the ARISTOTLE trial. The applicability of the ARISTOTLE trial is therefore unknown for a considerable proportion of patients with AF in real life.

  • Plasma-parathyroid hormone is associated with subclinical and clinical atherosclerotic disease in 2 community-based cohorts

    • OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular risk factors have different impact on different arterial territories. Diseases with elevated circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) such as primary hyperparathyroidism and chronic renal failure have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, predominantly heart or cerebrovascular diseases. However, data on the associations between circulating PTH and peripheral atherosclerosis are limited.APPROACH AND RESULTS: Two prospective, community-based studies were used. In 306 men and women, who were 70 years old, from the Prospective investigation of the vasculature in Uppsala seniors (PIVUS) study, cross-sectional relations between PTH and atherosclerotic burden assessed by whole-body magnetic resonance angiography were investigated. In 998 men, who were 71 years old, from the Uppsala longitudinal study of adult men (ULSAM) study, the association between PTH concentration and risk of subsequent nonfatal atherosclerotic disease (excluding coronary or cerebrovascular disease) was investigated. Adjusting for established vascular risk factors, PTH was associated with burden of atherosclerosis (increase in total atherosclerotic score per SD PTH increase: 0.04, 0.003-0.08; P=0.03) in the PIVUS study. During follow-up in the ULSAM study (median 16.7 years), 89 men were diagnosed with nonfatal atherosclerotic disease. In Cox-regression analyses adjusting for established vascular risk factors and mineral metabolism, higher PTH was associated with an increased risk of nonfatal atherosclerotic disease (hazard ratio for 1 SD increase of PTH: 1.55, 1.33-1.88; P<0.0001). Results were similar when including fatal atherosclerotic disease in the outcome.CONCLUSIONS: In 2 independent community-based cohorts, PTH was associated to the degree of atherosclerosis and risk of clinically overt atherosclerotic disease, respectively. Our data confirm and extend previous studies supporting a role for PTH in the development of atherosclerotic disease.

    • Context: In diseases with increased PTH such as hyperparathyroidism and chronic renal failure, dementia is common. Little is known of PTH and dementia in the community. Objective: We sought to investigate relations between PTH, clinical dementia and cerebral micro-vascular disease. Setting and Design: The Uppsala Longitudinal Study Of Adult Men (ULSAM) was prospective, baseline, 1991-1995; followup, 15.8 years. The Prospective Investigation Of The Vasculature In Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS) was cross-sectional, baseline, 2001. Both settings were community based.Participants and Main Outcome Measure: In the ULSAM study of 998 men (age 71) the association between PTH and dementia was investigated. In the PIVUS study of 406 men and women (age 70) the relation between PTH and magnetic resonance imaging signs of cerebral small vascular disease was investigated. Results: During followup, 56 individuals were diagnosed with vascular, 91 with Alzheimer's, and 59 with other dementias. In Cox-regression analyses, higher PTH was associated with vascular dementia (hazard ratio per 1 SD increase of PTH, 1.41; P < .01), but not with other dementias. The top tertile of PTH accounted for 18.5% of the population-attributable risk for vascular dementia, exceeding all other risk factors. In linear regression analysis in PIVUS, PTH was associated with increasing white matter hyperintensities (WMHI), reflecting increasing burden of cerebral small vessel disease (1 SD PTH increase, 0.31 higher category of WMHI; P = .016). All models were adjusted for vascular risk factors and mineral metabolism. Conclusions: In two community-based samples, PTH predicted clinically diagnosed and neuroimaging indices of vascular dementia and cerebral small vessel disease. Our data suggest a role for PTH in the development of vascular dementia.

    • PURPOSE: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is derived from a tissue with a remarkable capacity for vectorial transport. We therefore performed an unbiased exploration of transporter proteins in normal kidney and kidney cancer in order to discover novel clinical targets.EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Using the TCGA database we investigated differences in membrane transporter expression in ccRCC and normal kidney. We identified the dopamine transporter SLC6A3 as a specific biomarker for ccRCC. To investigate the functionality of SLC6A3 we used a [3H]-dopamine uptake assay on ccRCC cells. We further explored the effect of HIF proteins on SLC6A3 expression by introducing siRNA in ccRCC cells and by hypoxic treatment of non-malignant cells.RESULTS: We show that ccRCC express very high transcript levels of SLC6A3 in contrast to normal kidney tissue and other tumor types, which do not express appreciable levels of this transporter. Importantly, we demonstrate that the elevated expression of SLC6A3 in ccRCC cells is associated with specific uptake of dopamine. By targeting the expression of HIF-1α and HIF-2α we could show that SLC6A3 expression is primarily influenced by HIF-2α, and that hypoxia can induce SLC6A3 expression in normal renal cells.CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the dopamine transporter SLC6A3 constitute a novel biomarker that is highly specific for ccRCC. We further postulate that the protein can be exploited for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes for detection or treatment of ccRCC.

    • PURPOSE: To investigate whether an extracellular gadolinium-(Gd)-based contrast agent (CA) enters nonperfused myocardium during acute coronary occlusion, and whether nonperfused myocardium presents as hyperintense in delayed contrast-enhanced (DE) MR images in the absence of CA in that region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) was occluded for 200 minutes in six pigs. The longitudinal relaxation rate (R(1)) in blood, perfused myocardium, and nonperfused myocardium was repeatedly measured using a Look-Locker sequence before and during the first hour after administration of Gd-DTPA-BMA. RESULTS: While blood and perfused myocardium showed a major increase in R(1) after CA administration, nonperfused myocardium did not. R(1) in nonperfused myocardium was significantly lower than in blood and perfused myocardium during the first hour after CA administration. When the signal from perfused myocardium was nulled, demarcation of the hyperintense nonperfused myocardium was achieved in all of the study animals. CONCLUSION: Gd-DTPA-BMA does not enter ischemic myocardium within one hour after administration during acute coronary occlusion. The ischemic region with complete absence of CA still appears bright when the signal from perfused myocardium is nulled using inversion-recovery DE-MRI. This finding is important for understanding the basic pathophysiology of inversion-recovery viability imaging, as well as for imaging of acute coronary syndromes.

    • Quantifying the genetic correlation between cancers can provide important insights into the mechanisms driving cancer etiology. Using genome-wide association study summary statistics across six cancer types based on a total of 296,215 cases and 301,319 controls of European ancestry, here we estimate the pair-wise genetic correlations between breast, colorectal, head/neck, lung, ovary and prostate cancer, and between cancers and 38 other diseases. We observed statistically significant genetic correlations between lung and head/neck cancer (r(g) = 0.57, p = 4.6 x 10(-8)), breast and ovarian cancer (r(g) = 0.24, p = 7 x 10(-5)), breast and lung cancer (r(g) = 0.18, p = 1.5 x 10(-6)) and breast and colorectal cancer (r(g) = 0.15, p = 1.1 x 10(-4)). We also found that multiple cancers are genetically correlated with non-cancer traits including smoking, psychiatric diseases and metabolic characteristics. Functional enrichment analysis revealed a significant excess contribution of conserved and regulatory regions to cancer heritability. Our comprehensive analysis of cross-cancer heritability suggests that solid tumors arising across tissues share in part a common germline genetic basis.

  • Prevalence of systemic immunoreactivity to Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans leukotoxin in relation to the incidence of myocardial infarction
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: BMC Infectious Diseases. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2334. ; 11:1, s. 55-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Chronic infections and associated inflammatory markers are suggested risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin (IL)-1, is suggested to play a role in the regulation of local inflammatory responses in both CVD and periodontitis. The leukotoxin from the periodontal pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans has recently been shown to cause abundant secretion of IL-1 from macrophages. The aim of the present study was to compare the prevalence of systemic immunoreactivity to A. actinomycetemcomitans leukotoxin in myocardial infarction (MI) cases (n=532) and matched controls (n=1000) in a population-based case and referents study in northern Sweden. Methods: Capacity to neutralize A. actinomycetemcomitans leukotoxin was analyzed in a bioassay with leukocytes, purified leukotoxin, and plasma. Plasma samples that inhibited lactate-dehydrogenase release from leukotoxin-lysed cells by 50 % were classified as positive. Results: Neutralizing capacity against A. actinomycetemcomitans leukotoxin was detected in 53.3% of the plasma samples. The ability to neutralize leukotoxin correlated to increasing age in men (n=1082) but not in women (n=450). There was no correlation between presence of systemic leukotoxin neutralization capacity and the incidence of MI, except for women (n=146). Women with a low neutralizing capacity had a significantly higher incidence of MI than those who had a high neutralizing capacity. Conclusions: Systemic immunoreactivity against A. actinomycetemcomitans leukotoxin was found at a high prevalence in the analyzed population of adults from northern Sweden. The results from the present study do not support the hypothesis that systemic leukotoxin-neutralizing capacity can decrease the risk for MI.

  • Characterization of patients with atrial fibrillation not treated with oral anticoagulants
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care. - : Informa Healthcare. - 0281-3432 .- 1502-7724. ; 32:4, s. 226-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: An underuse of oral anticoagulants (OAC) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) has been suggested, as only 50% of all patients with AF receive OAC treatment. Whether this is due to contraindications, lack of an indication to treat, or an expression of underuse is sparsely investigated. This study therefore aimed to characterize individuals without OAC treatment in a real-life population of patients with AF. Design: Retrospective cross-sectional study. The medical records were scrutinized in order to identify the type of AF, risk factors for embolism and bleeding, and other factors of importance for OAC treatment. Setting: The municipalities of Skellefteå and Norsjö, northern Sweden. Subjects: A total of 2274 living residents with at least one verified episode of AF on or before December 31, 2010. Main outcome measures: Prevalence of treatment with OAC and documented reasons to withhold OAC treatment. Results: Among all 2274 patients with AF, 1187 (52%) were not treated with OAC. Of the untreated patients, 19% had no indication or had declined or had experienced adverse effects other than bleeding on warfarin treatment. The most common reason to withhold OAC was presence of risk factors for bleeding, found in 38% of all untreated patients. Furthermore, a documented reason could be identified to withhold OAC in 75%. Conclusions: Among patients with AF without OAC treatment a reason could be identifi ed to withhold OAC in 75%. The underuse of OAC is estimated to be 25%.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Clinical Epidemiology. - 1179-1349. ; 9, s. 53-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aims of this study were to estimate the incidence of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter (AF), to assess the presence of provoking factors and risk factors for stroke and systemic embolism, and to determine the type of AF in patients with first-diagnosed AF. Patients and methods: This cohort study was performed in northern Sweden between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2012. Diagnosis registries were searched for the International Classification of Diseases-10 code for AF (I48) to identify cases of incident AF. All AF diagnoses were electrocardiogram-verified. Data pertaining to provoking factors, type of AF and presence of risk factors for stroke and systemic embolism according to the CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score were obtained from medical records. Results: The incidence of AF in the entire population was 4.0 per 1,000 person-years. The incidence was 27.5 per 1,000 person-years in patients aged >= 80 years. A total of 21% of all patients had a provoking factor in association with the first-diagnosed episode of AF. The CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score was 2 or higher in 81% of the patients. Permanent AF was the most common type of AF (29%). Conclusion: There was a considerable increase in the incidence of AF with age, and a provoking factor was found in one-fifth. The most common type of AF was permanent AF. Four in five patients had a CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score of 2 or more.

  • Simultaneous targeted activation of Notch1 and Vhl-disruption in the kidney proximal epithelial tubular cells in mice
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common subtype of kidney cancer, representing approximately 75% of all renal neoplasms. ccRCC is known to be strongly associated with silencing of the von Hippel Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene, yet VHL deficiency alone does not seem to be sufficient to drive the oncogenic transformation of normal renal epithelium and induce renal tumorigenesis. We, and others, have previously suggested that constitutive activation of the Notch signaling pathway, alongside with VHL loss, contribute to the oncogenic features of ccRCC. Here we report a prevailing hyperactivation of the Notch1 receptor in human ccRCC relative to the healthy counterpart. To explore the consequences of the elevated Notch1 signaling observed in ccRCC patient material, we made use of a conditional mouse model based on concurrent ectopic expression of constitutively active Notch1 (NICD1) and deletion of the Vhl gene. Histological examination of the kidneys of the conditional mice demonstrate the existence of nests of dysplastic cells with a clear cytoplasm as a consequence of lipid accumulation, thus displaying a one important hallmark of human ccRCC.

  • Investigation of research needs regarding the storage of hydrogen gas in lined rock caverns : Prestudy for Work Package 2.3 in HYBRIT Research Program 1
  • 2018
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of HYBRIT RP1 is to explore and assess pathways to fossil-free energy-mining-iron-steel value chains and thereby provide a basis for industrial development activities and the necessary future transformative change in this field. A large-scale storage capacity for hydrogen gas is an important component of the proposed HYBRIT concept. Underground storage in lined rock caverns provides a reasonable option: a large-scale demonstration plant for storage of natural gas was constructed in Sweden in 2002 and has operated safely since then. Considering that this lined rock cavern facility was constructed for natural gas, the present report investigates the current research needs to allow for underground storage of hydrogen gas in such a facility. This will serve as a basis for the research in Work Package 2.3 of HYBRIT RP1.Studying the experiences from decades of Swedish and international research and practice on the construction of underground gas storage facilities, the conclusion is that the lined rock cavern concept seems a reasonable way forward. In terms of rock engineering research, there are currently no critical research issues; however, a development of a previously proposed risk-based design framework for lined rock caverns may further strengthen the ability to manage risks related to underground gas storage facilities. The report identifies several potential research questions on this topic to be further studied: development of a risk-based design approach using subset simulation, the optimization potential of the concrete thickness in the lining, and the effect of spatial variation of rock mass properties on a location’s suitability for the storage facility.Additionally, the report identifies the potential effect of hydrogen embrittlement on the steel lining as a critical research issue to ensure safe storage of hydrogen gas in lined rock caverns. However, as this issue is not related to rock engineering, but a material issue, it will not be covered further in Work Package 2.3.

  • Adjustable fractional-delay FIR filters using the Farrow structure and multirate techniques
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems,2006. ; , s. 1055-1058
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Farrow structure can be used for efficient realization of adjustable fractional-delay finite-length impulse response (FIR) filters, but, nevertheless, its implementation complexity grows rapidly as the bandwidth approaches the full bandwidth. To reduce the complexity, a multirate approach can be used. In this approach, the input signal is first interpolated by a factor of two via the use of a fixed half-band linearphase FIR filter. Then, the actual fractional-delay filtering takes place. Finally, the so generated signal is downsampled to retain the original input/output sampling rate. In this way, the bandwidth of the fractional-delay filter used is halved compared to the overall bandwidth. Because the complexity of halfband linear-phase FIR filter interpolators is low, the overall complexity can be reduced. In this paper, we present more implementation details, design trade-offs, and comparisons when the filters are implemented using multiple constant multiplication techniques, which realize a number of constant multiplications with a minimum number of adders and subtracters.

  • From a liberal to a Social Democratic welfare state: the policy transfer of the UK Compact?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nonprofit Policy Forum. - 2194-6035. ; 3:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • England was one of the first countries to install a Compact to regulate the relationship between state and civil society and since then several other countries have followed and initiated national Agreements, Charters or Concordats. Despite a growing academic interest into such national Compact models we have insufficient knowledge of how such ideas ‘from abroad’ are adapted and molded to fit with ‘domestic’ legacies, institutions and power disparities. The purpose of this article is to analyse the translation of the English Compact into a Swedish context and above all how domestic Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) acted to adjust such an international model to a national context. The article draws upon studies of written documents and interviews with key actors (politicians and CSO representatives) and two main conclusions are being presented. First, the article demonstrates that CSOs played an important role as translation agents as they identified the Compact idea long before key decision makers did, yet that the complete translation of the Compact model into a Swedish context was dependent upon the political will and ownership of central decision-makers. Second, the article demonstrates that the translation process was not as ordered as sometimes depicted within the translation literature and instead chains of translation processes was detected. These findings address a need to open up the translation perspective for the analysis of multiple types of translation agents and to understand translation as a nested process, in which one translation process might very well be interrelated with other parallel translation processes.
