  • Assessing co-creation of value using Service Science to promote students shift from passive to active learners
  • 2016
  • In: Proceedings of Lärarlärdom. - Kalmar : Linnaeus University. - 9789188357083 ; , s. 1-24
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper our aim is to study the co-creation of value in E-learning in the context of Swedish higher education. In order to conceptualize the value realization in learning processes, we propose a framework based on service dominant logic and service science as well as on the revised Bloom’s taxonomy. The service science approach contends that universities and teachers can only propose value of education and offer resources to its realization, but the real value of learning is always created collaboratively and interactively with learners and learner networks. The interactive participation within learning networks entails that it is not sufficient to only acquire factual knowledge from others but it is also necessary to create and exchange new knowledge. In terms of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy this implies a shift from lower to higher order of thinking, towards more abstract forms of cognitive skills. We suggest that a successful interactive value realization in the learning process can facilitate the anticipated progress from passive to active learners. A pilot test has been conducted at the end of the spring semester 2015 on two distance based courses for bachelor students offered by the Department of Computer Science at Linnaeus University. The result from this preliminary survey aims to point out the direction for further research efforts.

  • Going digital as a result of COVID-19 : Insights from students’ and teachers’ impressions in a Swedish university
  • 2022
  • In: International Journal of Educational Research Open. - : Elsevier. - 2666-3740. ; 3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • During the past two years, the entire world has been coping with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemics. The need for physical distancing, forced an accelerated digital transformation of the education sector. The emergency remote education (ERE) has been manifested differently across diverse countries in the world. In this paper, we bring a case study about students’ and teachers’ impressions and experiences regarding the changes that have happened due to pandemic conditions in university courses in informatics at a Swedish university. This research is conducted through a mix of quantitative and qualitative empirical data. These data have been collected through the students surveys, course logs, as well as teachers and ICT pedagogue interviews. The collected data have been analyzed through the technology-mediated learning (TML) theoretical framework. Based on the thematic analysis on the collected data, we have identified three main themes: a) Preparedness, b) Challenges with ERE and c) Opportunities with ERE. As a result, through analyzing data in the light of the ERE experiences that encompasses the educational process, affordance, and beliefs, knowledge, and practices, we provide a set of lessons-learned experiences and indicate the possible lines of actions when it comes to the learning design in the constrained pandemic situations.

  • Tackling the Sustainability of Digital Aging Innovations Through Design Thinking and Systems Thinking Perspectives
  • 2021
  • In: ICT for Health, Accessibility and Wellbeing. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030942083 - 9783030942090 ; , s. 179-184
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The digitalization of society brings many opportunities and challenges, especially on how we organize the welfare society in the future. This becomes especially pertinent as we are heading toward a global increase of older people, which will strain healthcare and bring the challenge of building sustainable solutions. In this paper, we argue that the unsustainable solutions within healthcare are due to them being defined and ‘solved’ with a single approach or approaches used in silos. We advocate that a more sustainable solution could be achieved by combining systems thinking and design thinking perspectives throughout the entire process—from problem definition to solution offering. A benefit of such combined perspectives is the ability to develop a shared context among all stakeholders, which helps uncover unique tacit knowledge from their experience. This will serve as a solid foundation to generate unconventional ideas that will lead to sustainable and satisfactory solutions.

  • Current Knowledge about Providing Drug–Drug Interaction Services for Patients : A Scoping Review
  • 2021
  • In: Pharmacy. - : MDPI. - 2226-4787. ; 9:2
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Drug–drug interactions (DDIs) pose a major problem to patient safety. eHealth solutions have the potential to address this problem and generally improve medication management by providing digital services for health care professionals and patients. Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) to alert physicians or pharmacists about DDIs are common, and there is an extensive body of research about CDSS for professionals. Information about DDIs is commonly requested by patients, but little is known about providing similar support to patients. The aim of this scoping review was to explore and describe current knowledge about providing digital DDI services for patients. Using a broad search strategy and an established framework for scoping reviews, 19 papers were included. The results show that although some patients want to check for DDIs themselves, there are differences between patients, in terms of demands and ability. There are numerous DDI services available, but the existence of large variations regarding service quality implies potential safety issues. The review includes suggestions about design features but also indicates a substantial knowledge gap highlighting the need for further research about how to best design and provide digital DDI to patients without risking patient safety or having other unintended consequences.

  • Exploring Smart Watch Ecosystem Value Co-creation Experience : A Qualitative Case Study
  • 2022
  • In: The Eighth International Conference on Smart Portable, Wearable, Implantableand Disability-oriented Devices and Systems. - : International Academy, Research and Industry Association (IARIA). - 9781612089638 ; , s. 1-7
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology paradigm comprising physical objects such as smart watches embedded with sensors, software, and networking technologies that are used to connect and exchange data with other devices such as smart phones and systems over the Internet. Smart watches and other wearables are emerging at a rapid speed, and they have engaged the users in redefining their interaction with mobile and pervasive technologies by creating an ecosystem of relevant devices. This research work focused on the issue of value co-creation and better understanding of smart watch consumer’s adoption and appropriation process which can highlight the factors motivating or demotivating the consumers to use the smart watches to achieve different objectives. Through a qualitative research method, empirical data was collected by observation, written questionnaire, and interviews. Using a thematic analysis scheme, the following four themes were generated from the collected data: (1) Getting motivated and maintaining motivation, (2) Usefulness – value-in-use and value-in context, (3) Technical issues with smart watch resources, and (4) Information security and privacy concerns about smart technologies.

  • Innovative Approaches in Health Care : Observational Study at an Elderly Care Unit in Japan
  • 2019
  • In: UBT International Conference. - : UBT Knowledge center. - 9789951550192
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study attempts to capture a holistic view of the phenomenon of ageing and what kind of impact information and communication technologies can have on the quality of life in ageing society, with special focus on health care. The systemic view recognizes the different perspectives of patients, front line care providers and the health care organization. The ultimate goal is to scrutinize the value co-creation opportunities as well as the challenges and risks when innovative technology is implemented in a complex service ecosystem. The empirical material is collected through an observational study at an elderly care unit in Tokyo, Japan, where robots are used in order to facilitate different kinds of social interaction among the elderly patients. In this context, it is highly relevant to discuss what kind of innovations can be considered as both desirable and feasible – and how the decisions can best be guided by different perspectives.

  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The current higher education, both distance education and traditional campus courses, relies more and more on modern information and communication technologies (ICT).The use of computer systems and networks results in a wide range of security issues thatmust be dealt with in order to create a safe learning environment. In this work, we studythe security status within the Swedish Net University, where several universitiescollaborate in order to offer ICT supported higher education distance courses. The totalICT-security is defined as a combination of computer security and information security, and the focus in this work is on the information security. The four main components ofthe information security that are used in the study are: confidentiality, integrity, availability and accountability. The data gathering was made in two steps: first preliminary interviews then themain questionnaire. The interview respondents were a small number of students, teachers and ICT-experts at various universities, and the results of this preliminary studywere then used to complete the questionnaire. The main questionnaire was sent toapproximately 700 students, 100 lectures and 50 ICT-pedagogues. The answers wereanalysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. However, due to a relatively lowanswering rate, we must point out that the conclusions made are based on these limitedresults, and are therefore not necessarily generally applicable within the distanceeducation. The results show that both teachers and students involved in distance educationconsider that they have relatively good basic competence regarding the use of various ICT-resources. In addition, they consider that the computers and network connectionsthey are using have adequate technical standard. However, the respondents also expressa need for more information and training in various areas that are directly connected toinformation security issues. What is more, both students and teachers require thatadequate computer support is constantly available. Several respondents have notdeveloped procedures for backing up files in a regular basis. There seems also be someuncertainty concerning which measures should be taken in order to protect computersystem from viruses and also what should be done if the computer is infected. Manyteachers consider that the risk for cheating, especially for plagiarism, is greater in thedistance education than in campus courses. These teachers also spend more time toprevent this problem in distance courses, and may have special procedures in order todetect plagiarism.Even if several security issues are indicated, most of the respondents considerthat the general ICT-security in distance education has a relatively high standard. Thismay be a sign of some discrepancy between the users’ knowledge and their actualbehavior when they use the computer systems.

  • Att minska läkemedelsförväxlingar med hjälp av ändrad design av förpackningar
  • 2012
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In order to ensure and increase access to high-quality learning opportunities it is becoming more and more common to integrate e-learning into health-related environments. The rapid development of these new learning environments also requires continuous monitoring and evaluation, to guarantee the quality of the health-care education. In this project a holistic model based on a systems approach is used in order to evaluate a video conference-supported course in emergency medicine. Questionnaires and observations as well as interviews in groups and individually were used for data gathering. The course participants were 27 junior doctors, 18 from the Stockholm node and 9 from the Kalmar node; 11 lecturers were involved. The collaborative pedagogical approach was appreciated; all participants agreed that their peers contributed to the learning process. The greatest advantage of the course was that high-quality education was made available to a group of junior doctors who did not have alternative possibilities for participating in a traditional course. To offer a proficient video conference environment for synchronous two-way communication, the course must be developed at three levels: technical environment; individual information and communications technology skills; and course organisation. Potential users must be offered adequate training and technical support. The course organisation must encourage the sharing of responsibilities and tasks between the participating nodes.

  • Theory, method and tools for evaluation using a systems-based approach
  • 2008
  • In: Electronic Journal of Information Systems Evaluation. - 1566-6379. ; 11:3, s. 197-212
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This work introduces an evaluation model for examining organisations that in one form or another depend on modern information technology for their core activities. The evaluation model, named SUV, is based on a systems science approach and has been developed at the eHealth Institute (eHälsoinstitutet) at the University of Kalmar. The central mechanism of the model, the SUV diagram, partitions the scope of evaluation into seven categories and three levels. The seven categories have been selected on a systems science basis with inspiration from systems thinking. The rationale for making this the starting point for the evaluation model is that it may be justifiably stated that the framework provided by systems thinking truly encompasses the breadth of human activity. Making use of this general framework, the SUV diagram provides a general roadmap to guide the evaluation effort. The three levels (organisation, technological and individual) were selected to add detail to the analysis complement the categories and enrich the analysis of each category as well as to the dynamic interplay among them. The SUV methodology is based on a continuous evaluation process whose driving-force is the wish of the interested parties to develop their own activities. It is a methodology within whose framework any and all methods for data gathering deemed appropriate for the evaluation at hand can be used. The use of multiple methods is explicitly encouraged for the purpose of gaining a multi-perspective view of the organisation/activity under scrutiny.Based on the accumulated findings from pilot studies, the model was operationalised in the form of an IT application for electronic surveys. The application is expected to contribute in making the evaluation process more efficient and add structure to this process.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper describes development work where an application specially adapted for essay-writing and supervision has been constructed, developed and tested. The aim of the programme development has been to create support for essay-writing and supervision. With the ambition of reinforcing important ingredients for effective supervision and essay-writing the aim and requirements for the Thesis Web Dialogue were formulated. The chief aim from the tutor's perspective was to facilitate organizing his or her supervision and efficiently follow and support the essay-writer. The essay-writers' chief aim was to find easy access to tutor support and information relevant to their essay work. The Thesis Web Dialogue was continuously developed and evaluated, a process which culminated on two evaluation occasions. The majority of the tutors and essay-writers who had tested or been introduced to the Thesis Web Dialogue are positive to its idea and function. The most positive is the student group. A few students have expressed their scepticism vis-à-vis the Thesis Web Dialogue. Some of these students feel uncertain when confronted with the technology, while some apparently want to avoid be subjected to higher demands and greater insight into their essay work. The result shows that the Thesis Web Dialogue can be of great help to many students and tutors. It is probably especially suitable for distance courses and/or essay courses where the tutor follows the essay writers for a fairly long time.

  • 2022
  • In: Proceedings of the 18th International Symposium on Health Information Management Research. - : Linnaeus University Press. - 9789189081093
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Electronic health record (EHR) is a ubiquitous e-health tool that includes both Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and personal health record (PHR). EHR is aimed to be a versatile digital tool that can benefit both caregivers and patients through Quick and easy access to medical information at any time from hospitals or primary care units. However, the fact that the bulk of core records, including self- service data for patients, is only available in Swedish may limit the scope, availability and feasibility of self service through EHRs access for refugee patients who are non-Swedish speakers. Research results suggest that the EHRs should be meaningful, modified, and improved based on patient’s needs, by actively involving patients in their healthcare. The issues diagnosed in this research work such as EHR an information sharing communication System, lack of Information about using EHR, language barrier a hinderance in using EHRs, EHRs as medical recommendation system, better instructions about EHRs, presenting medical information in diagnosis part in EHRs in other languages and presenting medical information in diagnosis part in EHRs by sound are very important to address non-Swedish speaking refugee patients’ needs to use and benefit from EHRs.

  • Can we rationally design molecularly imprinted polymers?
  • 2001
  • In: Analytica Chimica Acta. ; 435:1, s. 9-18
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The nearly exponential growth in the molecular imprinting literature has to a large extent been fuelled by an increasing awareness of the potential of molecular imprinting based technologies. Despite the acceptance of the technique by cognate disciplines and the demonstration of its usefulness in a number of enabling technologies, relatively little is known about the molecular level events underlying the imprinting process and subsequent recognition events. What rules govern imprint formation? Can we use such rules to rationally design molecularly imprinted polymers?

  • 2011
  • In: 44th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), 2011. - Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii : HICSS. - 9781424496181

    • This paper explores the current context of collaboration between small local food producers. The aim is to facilitate the design and maintenance of trustworthy collaborative e-marketplaces containing clusters of SMEs. An ethnographic approach was used and data was collected through observations, interviews and questionnaires. Our findings reveal both drivers to exploit and barriers to harness enabling trustworthy collaboration. Our current test bed is based on a research and design context that lacks mechanisms for governance. To take full advantage of the drivers and to tackle the barriers in a fruitful way, there is a need for a flexible infrastructure that allow for structured requirements, contractual agreements and validation of proposed collaboration services. To address this, we take advantage of recent developments in cloud computing, more specifically the integration of Platform as a Service (PaaS) in the support system

  • 2022
  • In: Digital Health. - : Sage Publications. - 2055-2076. ; 8, s. 1-21
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Objective: This study explored the Swedish digital health testbeds through the lens of complexity science. Methods: The purposive sampling was used to identify 38 digital health testbed organizations to conduct interviews in written or audio-conferencing. The interview responses were aggregated and analyzed using thematic analysis. The themes were mainly generated through complexity theory and the principles of complex adaptive systems. Results: Fifteen testbed organizations responded, comprising 13 written responses and two audio-conferencing. Five maintheoretical themes were generated: agents and diversity, connections and communication, adaptation and learning, perturbations, and path dependence. Agents and diversity depicted different types of testbeds, stakeholders and innovation, and the primary function and purpose of the testbeds. Various factors enhancing connections and communications among multiple stakeholders were identified, such as the quality of e-health solutions and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Some adaptation and learning factors, such as internal reorganization, sharing and creating learning opportunities, and additional funding, guaranteed the sustainability of testbeds. Perturbations were characterized by two factors: non-linear interactions – lack of commitment and transparency in stakeholders’ engagement, and uncertainty about testbed definitions and concepts. Path dependence highlighted the importance of history, such as previous positive and negative experiences. Conclusion: This study provided insights into testbeds’ organization, their functions, how various aspects were challenged, and how they adapted to overcome and improve the system issues. Identifying the stakeholders and relevant factors, commissioning an evaluation, backing up with a contingency plan, securing adequate funding, and disseminating the findings can improve the testbeds’ design and implementation.
