  • The Dalton quantum chemistry program system
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: WIREs Computational Molecular Science. - : Wiley. - 1759-0876 .- 1759-0884. ; 4:3, s. 269-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dalton is a powerful general-purpose program system for the study of molecular electronic structure at the Hartree-Fock, Kohn-Sham, multiconfigurational self-consistent-field, MOller-Plesset, configuration-interaction, and coupled-cluster levels of theory. Apart from the total energy, a wide variety of molecular properties may be calculated using these electronic-structure models. Molecular gradients and Hessians are available for geometry optimizations, molecular dynamics, and vibrational studies, whereas magnetic resonance and optical activity can be studied in a gauge-origin-invariant manner. Frequency-dependent molecular properties can be calculated using linear, quadratic, and cubic response theory. A large number of singlet and triplet perturbation operators are available for the study of one-, two-, and three-photon processes. Environmental effects may be included using various dielectric-medium and quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics models. Large molecules may be studied using linear-scaling and massively parallel algorithms. Dalton is distributed at no cost from for a number of UNIX platforms.

  • Biomarkers in Natural Fish Populations Indicate Adverse Biological Effects of Offshore Oil Production
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 6:5, s. e19735-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Despite the growing awareness of the necessity of a sustainable development, the global economy continues to depend largely on the consumption of non-renewable energy resources. One such energy resource is fossil oil extracted from the seabed at offshore oil platforms. This type of oil production causes continuous environmental pollution from drilling waste, discharge of large amounts of produced water, and accidental spills. Methods and principal findings: Samples from natural populations of haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in two North Sea areas with extensive oil production were investigated. Exposure to and uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were demonstrated, and biomarker analyses revealed adverse biological effects, including induction of biotransformation enzymes, oxidative stress, altered fatty acid composition, and genotoxicity. Genotoxicity was reflected by a hepatic DNA adduct pattern typical for exposure to a mixture of PAHs. Control material was collected from a North Sea area without oil production and from remote Icelandic waters. The difference between the two control areas indicates significant background pollution in the North Sea. Conclusion: It is most remarkable to obtain biomarker responses in natural fish populations in the open sea that are similar to the biomarker responses in fish from highly polluted areas close to a point source. Risk assessment of various threats to the marine fish populations in the North Sea, such as overfishing, global warming, and eutrophication, should also take into account the ecologically relevant impact of offshore oil production.

  • Multiwavelet analysis on fractals
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of an introduction and a summary, followed by two papers, both of them on the topic of function spaces on fractals. Paper I: Andreas Brodin, Pointwise Convergence of Haar type Wavelets on Self-Similar Sets, Manuscript. Paper II: Andreas Brodin, Regularization of Wavelet Expansion characterizes Besov Spaces on Fractals, Manuscript. Properties of wavelets, originally constructed by A. Jonsson, are studied in both papers. The wavelets are piecewise polynomial functions on self-similar fractal sets. In Paper I, pointwise convergence of partial sums of the wavelet expansion is investigated. On a specific fractal set, the Sierpinski gasket, pointwise convergence of the partial sums is shown by calculating the kernel explicitly, when the wavelets are piecewise constant functions. For more general self-similar fractals, pointwise convergence of the partial sums and their derivatives, in case the expanded function has higher regularity, is shown using a different technique based on Markov's inequality. A. Jonsson has shown that on a class of totally disconnected self-similar sets it is possible to characterize Besov spaces by means of the magnitude of the coefficients in the wavelet expansion of a function. M. Bodin has extended his results to a class of graph directed self-similar sets introduced by Mauldin and Williams. Unfortunately, these results only holds for fractals such that the sets in the first generation of the fractal are disjoint. In Paper II we are able to characterize Besov spaces on a class of fractals not necessarily sharing this condition by making the wavelet expansion smooth. We create continuous regularizations of the partial sums of the wavelet expansion and show that properties of these regularizations can be used to characterize Besov spaces.

  • IGSCC DISPOSITION CURVES FOR ALLOY 82 IN BWR NORMAL WATER CHEMISTRY
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 13th International Conference on Environmental Degradation of Materials in Nuclear Power Systems. - 9781605600598 - 9781605600598 ; , s. 1353-1363
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In many nuclear power plants, areas of susceptible material in the reactor systems are replaced or mitigated. Many of the areas where the nickel-based weld metal Alloy 182 have been used, are not replaceable but need to be mitigated. One possibility to mitigate is to make known susceptible material non-accessible for the reactor coolant water by covering it with less susceptible materials. One such possibility that has been utilized frequently in the Swedish Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) fleet is in-lay welding of butt welds in the main circulation and feed water loops with the less susceptible Alloy 82, which has fewer reported failure cases under these conditions. The study focuses on the development of a Factor of Improvement between Alloy 182 and the replacement, Alloy 82 material. As part of this, a disposition curve under conditions relevant for Normal Water Chemistry, NWC, in the Swedish BWRs is presented.

  • Frequency of apical periodontitis in root-filled teeth restored with post and core : A 5-year retrospective study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Dental Research. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2057-4347. ; 10:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: In conjunction with post placement in root-filled teeth with periapical healthy conditions, root canal retreatment may be performed to improve the seal of the root canal. Whether root canal retreatment for technical reasons (retreatments in teeth without apical periodontitis (AP)) results in lower frequency of AP is unknown.OBJECTIVE: To examine whether there is a difference in frequency of AP between roots with root canals retreated for technical reasons, and roots with root canals not retreated before post placement, with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. Also, to examine changes in root filling quality following root canal retreatment for technical reasons.METHODS: This retrospective study included radiographs of 441 root-filled roots without periapical radiolucencies at baseline, scheduled for post and core treatment. Follow-up data for a minimum of 5 years were available for 305 roots (loss to follow-up 30.8%), 46 of which were retreated for technical reasons. Two calibrated observers assessed root filling sealing quality and length, respectively, and periapical status according to the Periapical Index. The main outcome of the study, AP, was used as the dependent variable and all analyses were performed at root level.RESULTS: The overall frequency of AP at follow-up was 13.8%. The difference in frequency of AP between retreated (4.3%) and nonretreated (15.4%) root canals was not statistically significant, p = .061. Analyses including only roots with preoperatively inadequate root filling quality showed a statistically significant difference (p = .017) between the two treatment groups (2.4% vs. 22.9%).CONCLUSIONS: Root canal retreatment for technical reasons before post and core placement significantly reduces the frequency of AP in roots with inadequate root filling quality.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Mathematische Zeitschrift. - New York : Springer. - 0025-5874 .- 1432-1823. ; 250:3, s. 599-609
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In connection with the theory for Brownian motion on fractals, a corresponding Dirichlet form has been defined. We consider here the fractal known as the Sierpinski gasket, and characterize the trace of the domain of the Dirichlet form to the boundary of the gasket, boundary in this context meaning the triangle which confines the gasket.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Potential Analysis. - Dordrecht : Kluwer Academic Publishers. - 0926-2601 .- 1572-929X. ; 13:1, s. 69-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Can a Brownian motion penetrate the two-dimensional Sierpinski gasket? This question was studied in [8], and an affirmative answer was given. In this paper, the problem is studied with a different approach, using Dirichlet forms and function space theory. The results obtained are somewhat different from, and from certain aspects more general than, the results in [8].

  • Haar wavelets of higher order on fractals and regularity of functions
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications. - San Diego : Academic Press. - 0022-247X .- 1096-0813. ; 290:1, s. 86-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wavelets of Haar type of higher order m on self-similar fractals were introduced by the author in J. Fourier Anal. Appl. 4 (1998) 329–340. These are piecewise polynomials of degree m instead of piecewise constants. It was shown that for certain totally disconnected fractals, spaces of functions defined on the fractal may be characterized by means of the magnitude of the wavelet coefficients of the functions. In this paper, the study of these wavelets is continued. It is shown that also in the case when the fractals are not totally disconnected, the wavelets can be used to study regularity properties of functions. In particular, the self-similar sets considered can be, e.g., an interval in R or a cube in Rn. It turns out that it is natural to use Haar wavelets of higher order also in these classical cases, and many of the results in the paper are new also for these sets.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Analysis Mathematica. - 0133-3852 .- 1588-273X. ; 27:2, s. 77-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For a class of closed sets F ⊂ Rn admitting a regular sequence of triangulations or generalized triangulations, the analogues on F of the Faber—Schauder and Franklin bases are discussed. The characterizations of the Besov spaces on F in the terms of coefficients of functions with respect to these bases are proved. As a consequence, analogous characterizations of the Besov spaces on some fractal domains (including the Sierpinski gasket and the von Koch curve) by coefficients of functions with respect to the wavelet bases constructed in [26] are obtained.

  • Acute peripheral facial palsy simulating Bell's palsy in a case of probable multiple sclerosis with a clinically correlated transient pontine lesion on magnetic resonance imaging
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Journal for Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. - 0301-1569 .- 1423-0275. ; 53:6, s. 362-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A transient pontine lesion was demonstrated in a young adult male who had a complete acute peripheral facial nerve palsy due probably to multiple sclerosis. In the acute stage of the palsy. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a high signal intensity in the ipsilateral pons in the region of the nucleus and pontine part of the facial nerve. The patient recovered completely 5 weeks after the onset of the palsy, and at this stage, the lesion in the brainstem was no longer demonstrable on MRI. The onset and course of the disease resembled the idiopathic form of facial palsy (Bell's palsy): the present findings along with recent MRI and topodiagnostic studies may indicate that in some cases of Bell's palsy the primary lesion is located centrally. By improved MRI techniques and intravenous contrast agents it may be possible to visualize and follow the disease process and ascertain more of the pathogenesis of Bell's palsy.

  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl-Contaminated Freshwater Impacts Adjacent Riparian Food Webs
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : ACS Publications. - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 54:19, s. 11951-11960
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in aquatic ecosystems is a global concern because of their persistence, potential bioaccumulation, and toxicity. In this study, we investigated a PFAS-contaminated pond in Sweden to assess the cross-boundary transfer of PFASs from the aquatic environment to the riparian zone via emergent aquatic insects. Aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, surface water, sediments, soils, and plants were analyzed for 24 PFASs including branched isomers. Stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen was performed to elucidate the importance of diet and trophic position for PFAS uptake. We present the first evidence that PFASs can propagate to the riparian food web via aquatic emergent insects. Elevated Σ24PFAS concentrations were found in aquatic insect larvae, such as dragon- and damselflies, ranging from 1100 to 4600 ng g-1 dry weight (dw), and remained high in emerged adults (120-3500 ng g-1 dw), indicating exposure risks for top predators that prey in riparian zones. In terrestrial invertebrate consumers, PFAS concentrations increased with the degree of aquatic-based diet and at higher trophic levels. Furthermore, stable isotope data together with calculated bioaccumulation factors indicated that bioconcentration of PFASs was the major pathway of exposure in the aquatic food web and bioaccumulation in the riparian food web.

  • Quantification of Biodriven Transfer of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from the Aquatic to the Terrestrial Environment via Emergent Insects
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 55:12, s. 7900-7909
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emergent aquatic insects are important food subsidies to riparian food webs but can also transfer waterborne contaminants to the terrestrial environment. This study aimed to quantitatively assess this biodriven transfer for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Aquatic insect larvae, emergent aquatic insects, terrestrial consumers, sediment, and water were collected from a contaminated lake and stream and an uncontaminated pond, and analyzed for PFAS and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. Top predators in this study were spiders, which showed the highest average ∑24PFAS concentration of 1400 ± 80 ng g–1 dry weight (dw) at the lake and 630 ng g–1 dw at the stream. The transfer of PFAS from the lake to the riparian zone, via deposition of emergent aquatic insects, was 280 ng ∑24PFAS m–2 d–1 in 2017 and only 23 ng ∑24PFAS m–2 d–1 in 2018. Because of higher production of emergent aquatic insects, the lake had higher PFAS transfer and higher concentrations in terrestrial consumers compared to the stream, despite the stream having higher PFAS concentration in water and aquatic insect larvae. Our results indicate that biodriven transfer of PFAS from the aquatic systems and subsequent uptake in terrestrial food webs depend more on emergence amounts, i.e., aquatic prey availability, rather than on PFAS concentrations in water and aquatic prey.

  • PILOT - vidareutbildning av unga bilförare : slutrapport
  • 2002

  • Interventions in root-filled teeth identified in general dental practice : A 6-year longitudinal observational study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Endodontic Journal. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0143-2885 .- 1365-2591.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To investigate what happens to cross-sectionally identified root-filled teeth over a 6-year period, regardless of the time that elapsed since primary root canal treatment, in a cohort of adult patients regularly attending a Public Dental Service. A secondary aim was to investigate how the cumulative events affecting root-filled teeth over the same time were associated with variables obtained from a baseline examination.Methodology: Adult patients with >= 1 previously root-filled tooth and regularly attending the Public Dental Service in & Ouml;rebro County were enrolled for study participation in 2015. General dental practitioners examined all identified root-filled teeth in this cohort at baseline using a standardized protocol and were also responsible for further decision-making and treatments. After six years, information on events of the root-filled teeth was collected from dental records. The highest rating (most invasive treatment) on a 5-point ordinal scale was used in the analyses. Regression analyses with stepwise selection were performed for associations between patient- and tooth-related factors and events. Results: A total of 445 patients with 1007 root-filled teeth were followed the entire observation time. Twenty (2.0%) of the root-filled teeth had endodontic retreatment and 150 (14.9%) were extracted over six years. Among teeth with periapical radiolucency or pain, the majority did not undergo retreatment or extraction; however, the multivariate analysis demonstrated that retreatment or extraction was associated with baseline recordings of teeth with periapical radiolucency (p < .0001), tenderness to percussion (p < .0001), and poor coronal restoration (p < .0001).Conclusions: This study corroborates the notion that in general dentistry, root-filled teeth with radiological signs of apical disease often remain untreated over time. Furthermore, it also reveals that root-filled teeth presenting with mild pain do not necessarily receive any intervention. However, teeth with baseline signs of apical periodontitis, pain, or inadequate coronal restoration were more likely to have received intervention during the six-year period.

  • Multiomics analysis of rheumatoid arthritis yields sequence variants that have large effects on risk of the seropositive subset
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. - : BMJ. - 0003-4967 .- 1468-2060. ; 81:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives To find causal genes for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its seropositive (RF and/or ACPA positive) and seronegative subsets. Methods We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 31 313 RA cases (68% seropositive) and similar to 1 million controls from Northwestern Europe. We searched for causal genes outside the HLA-locus through effect on coding, mRNA expression in several tissues and/or levels of plasma proteins (SomaScan) and did network analysis (Qiagen). Results We found 25 sequence variants for RA overall, 33 for seropositive and 2 for seronegative RA, altogether 37 sequence variants at 34 non-HLA loci, of which 15 are novel. Genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of these yielded 25 causal genes in seropositive RA and additional two overall. Most encode proteins in the network of interferon-alpha/beta and IL-12/23 that signal through the JAK/STAT-pathway. Highlighting those with largest effect on seropositive RA, a rare missense variant in STAT4 (rs140675301-A) that is independent of reported non-coding STAT4-variants, increases the risk of seropositive RA 2.27-fold (p=2.1x10(-9)), more than the rs2476601-A missense variant in PTPN22 (OR=1.59, p=1.3x10(-160)). STAT4 rs140675301-A replaces hydrophilic glutamic acid with hydrophobic valine (Glu128Val) in a conserved, surface-exposed loop. A stop-mutation (rs76428106-C) in FLT3 increases seropositive RA risk (OR=1.35, p=6.6x10(-11)). Independent missense variants in TYK2 (rs34536443-C, rs12720356-C, rs35018800-A, latter two novel) associate with decreased risk of seropositive RA (ORs=0.63-0.87, p=10(-9)-10(-27)) and decreased plasma levels of interferon-alpha/beta receptor 1 that signals through TYK2/JAK1/STAT4. Conclusion Sequence variants pointing to causal genes in the JAK/STAT pathway have largest effect on seropositive RA, while associations with seronegative RA remain scarce.

  • Characteristics and impact of pain from root-filled teeth : A practice-based cross-sectional study comparing painful teeth with and without signs of inflammatory dental disease
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Oral and Facial Pain and Headache. - : Quintessence Publishing. - 2333-0384 .- 2333-0376. ; 38:1, s. 64-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To compare pain characteristics, impact of pain and characteristics of patients with painful root-filled teeth with and without signs of inflammatory dental disease. This cross-sectional study was performed in the Public Dental Health services, Region orebro County, Sweden. Adult patients with >= 1 root-filled tooth identified at their regular check -up were included and assigned to one of two groups; those with >= 1 sign of inflammatory dental disease (DD+) and those without any such sign (DD-). Patients/teeth were compared regarding pain characteristics (intensity, frequency, duration, quality and provoking factors), impact of pain (medication intake, impact on life) and patient characteristics as background factors (general health, other bodily and orofacial pain). Statistics included descriptive data (frequency tables) and group comparisons (Chi-square, Fisher's Exact and Mann-Whitney U-tests). The DD+ group included 27 participants (30 teeth) and the DD- group 22 participants (23 teeth). On average, pain intensity was mild, the frequency most often recurrent, and the impact was low. Average pain duration since onset exceeded 2 years in both groups. The only observed between-group differences were average pain intensity; 3.1 (0-10 Numerical Rating Scale (NRS)) in DD- group compared to 1.6 for DD+ (p = 0.030), and tenderness to apical palpation; only reported in the DD+ group. The similarities in clinical presentation between the two groups underscore the difficulties in correctly distinguishing between pain of odontogenic and non-odontogenic origin in root-filled teeth with a standard clinical investigation. Additional diagnostic methods need to be investigated for their ability to differentiate between tooth pain or discomfort of different origins.
