  • Corrigendum to “Cost of disorders of the brain in Europe 2010” [Eur. Neuropsychopharmacol. 21 (2011) 718–779]
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Neuropsychopharmacology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0924-977X .- 1873-7862. ; 22:3, s. 237-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spectrum of disorders of the brain is large, covering hundreds of disorders that are listed in either the mental or neurological disorder chapters of the established international diagnostic classification systems. These disorders have a high prevalence as well as short- and long-term impairments and disabilities. Therefore they are an emotional, financial and social burden to the patients, their families and their social network. In a 2005 landmark study, we estimated for the first time the annual cost of 12 major groups of disorders of the brain in Europe and gave a conservative estimate of €386 billion for the year 2004. This estimate was limited in scope and conservative due to the lack of sufficiently comprehensive epidemiological and/or economic data on several important diagnostic groups. We are now in a position to substantially improve and revise the 2004 estimates. In the present report we cover 19 major groups of disorders, 7 more than previously, of an increased range of age groups and more cost items. We therefore present much improved cost estimates. Our revised estimates also now include the new EU member states, and hence a population of 514 million people.

  • Ingår i: WIREs Computational Molecular Science. - : Wiley. - 1759-0876 .- 1759-0884. ; 4:3, s. 269-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dalton is a powerful general-purpose program system for the study of molecular electronic structure at the Hartree-Fock, Kohn-Sham, multiconfigurational self-consistent-field, MOller-Plesset, configuration-interaction, and coupled-cluster levels of theory. Apart from the total energy, a wide variety of molecular properties may be calculated using these electronic-structure models. Molecular gradients and Hessians are available for geometry optimizations, molecular dynamics, and vibrational studies, whereas magnetic resonance and optical activity can be studied in a gauge-origin-invariant manner. Frequency-dependent molecular properties can be calculated using linear, quadratic, and cubic response theory. A large number of singlet and triplet perturbation operators are available for the study of one-, two-, and three-photon processes. Environmental effects may be included using various dielectric-medium and quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics models. Large molecules may be studied using linear-scaling and massively parallel algorithms. Dalton is distributed at no cost from for a number of UNIX platforms.

  • Patients with Lewy body dementia use more resources than those with Alzheimer's disease.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. - : Wiley. - 1099-1166 .- 0885-6230. ; 22:Dec 29, s. 713-719
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare resource use and costs in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to assess determinants of costs of care in DLB. Method Thirty-four patients with DLB were included in a cross-sectional study. The patients were matched with respect to age, gender and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score to 34 patients with AD. Both groups were examined using Resource Utilisation in Dementia (RUD Lite), MMSE and the Neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI). The DLB patients were additionally examined using the Disability Assessment for Dementia Scale (DAD). Results Costs of care in patients suffering from DLB was on average 348,000 SEK (37,5004 is an element of) per year compared to 169,000 SEK (18,2004 is an element of) in the AD group (p < 0.001). Within the DLB group, care costs correlated significantly (r(c) = 2.77, p < 0.001) with dependency in instrumental activities of daily living measured with DAD, whereas MMSE and NPI were not significantly correlated to resource use in the DLB group. Conclusions DLB patients use more resources, and are more costly than AD patients. Dependency in instrumental activities of daily living is strongly correlated to resource use in DLB patients. • Fiberbanks as substrate and feedstock for biological remediation : A practical analytical method development for organic pollutants analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Book of Abstracts. - : ABA Publishing. - 9789189081031
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fiberbanksfrom the pulp and paper industry are typically contaminated with a wide range ofchlorinated aromatic and aliphatic toxins such as HCB and other chlorinated benzenes, PCB,HCH, DDT, PCDD, PCDF and Chlorophenols. This poses a formidable challenge for theanalyst to develop appropriate analytical methodology for the monitoring of the progress ofremediation. In preparation to this undertaking, an examination of a practical analytical method using oneextraction method, one clean-up and one analysis method for the aforementioned targetcompounds found in the fibrous sediment. This method was performed using acceleratedsolvent extraction (ASE), a modified silica gel column and GC-FID/ECD. Additionally,an assessment of the levels of organic pollutants was conducted, with the purposeofmeasuringthe potential alteration in contaminantswhenfreeze-drying, air-drying andautoclavingpretreatments are applied to the sediment samples, prior to be used as a media forbiological remediation. The results showed that the ASE is a very fast and reliable method of extraction, with yieldscomparableorhigher than the reference Soxhlet extraction method. Theactivatedsilica gelcolumn demonstrated adequate purification of the sediment extract for analysisusingthe twodetectors, FID and ECD, whichwere able to identify the target analytes fromonlyone purifiedextract. The method employed in this study has the potentialto reduceboth processing timeand materialusedfor analytical sample preparation. Lastly, some modifications inconcentrations anddistribution of target analyteswere revealedin thesediments pre-treated byautoclave and air-driedwhencompared withthefreeze-dried sediments, which can helpunderstanding the development of the biological remediation process.

  • Controlled Lateral Positioning of Microparticles Inside Droplets Using Acoustophoresis
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Analytical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0003-2700 .- 1520-6882. ; 87:20, s. 10521-10526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we utilize bulk acoustic waves to control the position of micropartides inside droplets in two-phase microfluidic systems and demonstrate a method to enrich the micropartides. In droplet microfluidics, different unit operations are combined and integrated on-chip to miniaturize complex biochemical assays. We present a droplet unit operation capable of controlling the position of micropartides during a trident shaped droplet split. An acoustic standing wave field is generated in the microchannel, and the acoustic forces direct the encapsulated micropartides to the center of the droplets. The method is generic, requires no labeling of the micropartides, and is operated in a noncontact fashion. It was possible to achieve 2+-fold enrichment of polystyrene beads (5 mu m in diameter) in the center daughter droplet with an average recovery of 89% of the beads. Red blood cells were also successfully manipulated inside droplets. These results show the possibility to use acoustophoresis in two-phase systems to enrich micropartides and open up the possibility for new droplet-based assays that are not performed today.

  • Effects of an Empowerment-Based Health-Promotion School Intervention on Physical Activity and Sedentary Time among Adolescents in a Multicultural Area
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - Basel : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 15:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical activity (PA) decreases with age, and interventions are needed to promote PA during adolescence, especially, among those in low-socioeconomic status (SES) areas. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a two-year, empowerment-based health-promotion school intervention had any effects on changes in (a) moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), (b) sedentary time (SED), (c) exercise training (ET) frequency, and (d) ET duration, among adolescents. Participants (aged 12-13 years at baseline) from one intervention school and two control schools, were recruited from a multicultural area of Sweden, characterized by low-SES. During the course of the two-year intervention, a total of 135 participants (43% boys) were included in the study. The intervention was developed and implemented as a result of cooperation and shared decision-making among the researchers and the participants. MVPA and SED were measured with accelerometers, and ET frequency and duration was self-reported at the beginning of the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade, respectively. There were no significant effects of the two-year, empowerment-based health-promotion school intervention on changes in the accelerometer-measured MVPA and SED, or the self-reported ET frequency and duration, among the adolescents. Overall, the intervention was unsuccessful at promoting PA and reducing SED. Several possible explanations for the intervention's lack of effects are discussed.

  • Exploring reasons to attend formal teaching sessions among students: A self-determination theory perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Högre Utbildning. - : Cappelen Damm AS - Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 2000-7558. ; 11:2, s. 70-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among students in higher education, attending formal teaching sessions might be important not only for academic achievement but also to foster human values. Despite this, the low and declining attendance rate is a growing concern in higher education. This study aimed to explore what students believe teachers could do to facilitate attendance at formal teaching sessions in the physical education part of the teacher education program in Sweden. Three focus group interviews were conducted among students aged 20 to 35 who attended the teacher education programme. The self-determination theory was used as a theoretical framework, and data were analysed and categorised using qualitative content analysis. The analysis of the interviews formed an overarching theme that intersected with four categories. The results show that teachers might facilitate attendance during formal teaching sessions by providing opportunities for students to interact with each other; match challenges with skills; be engaged, enthusiastic, and caring; and outline the value and rationale. The study’s implications for teachers are discussed in the paper.

  • Empowering aspects for healthy food and physical activity habits : adolescents’ experiences of a school-based intervention in a disadvantaged urban community
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 13:sup1: Equal Health
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose:This study aimed to describe adolescents’ experiences of participating in a health-promoting school-based intervention regarding food and physical activity, with a focus on empowering aspects. Method:The school was located in a urban disadvantaged community in Sweden, characterized by poorer self-reported health and lower life expectancy than the municipality average. Focus group interviews with adolescents (29 girls, 20 boys, 14–15 years) and their teachers (n = 4) were conducted two years after intervention. Data were categorized using qualitative content analysis. Results: A theme was generated, intersecting with all the categories: Gaining control over one’s health: deciding, trying, and practicing together, in new ways, using reflective tools. The adolescents appreciated influencing the components of the intervention and collaborating with peers in active learning activities such as practicing sports and preparing meals. They also reported acquiring new health information, that trying new activities was inspiring, and the use of pedometers and photo-food diaries helped them reflect on their health behaviours. The adolescents’ experiences were also echoed by their teachers. Conclusions: To facilitate empowerment and stimulate learning, health-promotion interventions targeting adolescents could enable active learning activities in groups, by using visualizing tools to facilitate self-reflection, and allowing adolescents to influence intervention activities.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is limited understanding of how education initiatives geared toward faculty and support staff can foster a capacity for long-term and integrated societal engagement and collaboration within higher education institutions. Using the experiences from a cross-disciplinary pilot course in Sweden, the current study aims to identify features that explicate how skills and academic rigor for engaging in societal collaboration can be developed toward a “reflexive scholarship of societal collaboration.” Based on a case study of the course, we identify the need for (i) theoretical orientation, (ii) collective reflections among diverse participants, and (iii) application of gained knowledge in real-world contexts. Building on the experiences from the pilot course, we explore and discuss the participants’ reflections on how their partaking in the course may support a reflexive scholarship of societal collaboration. Our study is relevant to managers and policymakers interested in nurturing long-term and integrated collaborations between academia and various societal actors.

  • Ingår i: Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-0248 .- 1879-3398. ; 84:1-4, s. 427-439
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Light scattering plays a prominent role in a wide range of energy-efficient materials and solar applications. Some examples are materials for daylighting, diffusely reflecting sunscreens, foils for radiative cooling and nanocrystalline solar cells. Measurements of the angular profile of light scattering are very useful for obtaining a detailed characterization of the light scattering mechanisms. We review recent theoretical results on the forward and backward light scattering profiles. Forward scattering is of major importance for novel pigmented polymeric daylighting materials. Measurements of scattering profiles are in good agreement with Mie theory. Backscattering profiles from highly diffusely reflecting paints containing titanium oxide-based pigments have also been measured. It seems that scattering from the paint surface dominates at low pigment volume fractions. Results for paints with high pigment volume fractions are interpreted in terms of coherent backscattering effects from the pigment particles.

    • The Fleeting Sense of Smell (Den undflyende lukten)This is an overview of the elusive sense of smell, both from a historical/cultural and psychological perspective. We follow two themes. In the first, we describe the repeated efforts to understand and categorize human olfaction, from antiquity to present day. We disseminate how smell has been positioned in sensory hierarchies, describe odor classifications systems and discuss differing views on the relationship between odor and health. The second theme regards how odors and the senseitself has been used as a means for understanding, separating and classifying other phenomena. Odors have throughout history been used to de- marcate class boundaries; the (non-)reliance of the sense of smell has been seen as an indication of civilization. Olfactory acuity is used to separate humans from animals, women from men, and young from old. These smell-based taxonomies persist, despite having no clear backing from em- pirical evidence. Finally, we suggest that the inter- est in smell may be on the rise, both from a societal and scientific perspective.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1613-8171.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to explore how teachers at certified sports-oriented upper secondary schools (CSUSS) in Sweden experienced how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their everyday practice and well-being. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 teachers (mean age: 44 years) from three CSUSS in southern Sweden. The interviews were analysed using abductive qualitativecontent analysis. The analysis resulted in one overreaching theme, ‘Making sense of changes in everyday practice and dealing with a changing world’, illuminating how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted teachers. The teachers described the first lockdown as an initial shock that brought about changes in their workload and daily routines. The second lockdown was generally easier to handle, but they spent more time on planning and preparations, and had a greater focus on conveying theoretical knowledge and physicaltraining. Throughout the pandemic, they experienced a lack of social interactions; nonetheless, supportive colleagues and schools provided some relief. The teachers also experienced uncertainty regarding constantly changing restrictions; they learned, however, the importance of being flexible and creative in coping with these changes. Thus, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted their everyday practice and well-being. © 2024 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

  • Adolescents’ voices concerning facilitators of physical activity
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Abstract Book. ISBNPA 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objective: Socioeconomic inequalities in adolescents’ health and well-being are increasing, yet relatively little attention has been paid to voices of adolescents’ in disadvantaged communities and their stories about physical activity. As such, the purpose of this study was to illuminate what adolescents, from a low socioeconomic multicultural community in Sweden, convey concerning facilitators of physical activity. Methods:All seventh graders from one school in Sweden, situated in a multicultural community characterized with low socioeconomic status, were invited to the study, and 53 adolescents (12-13 years of age) agreed to participate. Embracing an interpretive approach, ten focus-group interviews was conducted to produce data for the study. The focus-group interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Findings:The analysis resulted in two major themes regarding facilitators of the adolescents’ physical activity: (1) Possibility for enjoyment; and (2) Social support and a supportive environment. The first theme illuminated that feelings of enjoyment guided the adolescents’ physical activity engagement, and that presence of peers, perceived competence, variation and options promoted enjoyment related to physical activity. The second theme illustrated that social support from family facilitated the adolescents’ physical activity, and included several suggestions from the adolescents’ on how the school environment could become more supportive of their physical activity (e.g., longer breaks in school). Conclusion:Based on the adolescents’ voices, feeling of enjoyment had a great impact on their physical activity engagement, and the presence of peers, variation and options, and perceived competence contributed to enjoyment related to physical activity. Moreover, according to the adolescents, social support from family facilitated their physical activity and the school environment had the potential of becoming more supportive of their physical activity. Noteworthy, when the adolescents spoke about physical activity, they mostly referred to spontaneous physical activities (e.g., playing football with friends), rather than organized physical activities, which appear to be specific for these adolescents.

  • An empowerment-based school physical activity intervention with adolescents in a disadvantaged community: A transformative mixed methods investigation
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is important for the health of adolescents to engage in regular physical activity. The majority of adolescents do not, however, engage in sufficient physical activity to meet contemporary guidelines, and adolescents of low socioeconomic status appear to be less physically active compared to adolescents of high socioeconomic status. As such, the overall aim of this thesis is twofold. First, the thesis aims to gain insight into adolescents’, from a multicultural community of low socioeconomic status, views on physical activity. Second, the thesis aims to describe and problematize the development and implementation of an empowerment-based school intervention, in a Swedish multicultural community of low socioeconomic status, and to evaluate the effects of the intervention focusing on basic needs satisfaction, motivation, and objectively measured physical activity. This compilation thesis is based on four papers and is written within the ‘How-to-Act?’-project which has its starting point in a two-year empowerment-based school intervention. For the purpose of the ‘How-to-Act?’-project, one intervention school (n=54 7th graders) and two control schools (n=60 7th graders), situated in a multicultural area of low socioeconomic status in Gothenburg, were recruited. For paper I and II, focus group interviews were conducted with adolescents (n=53) in the intervention school, before implementation of the intervention, to illuminate what they convey concerning factors that facilitate respectively undermine their physical activity. Paper III describes and problematizes the development and implementation of the empowerment-based school intervention, which was continuously developed and implemented through cooperation and shared decision making, focusing on physical activity. For paper IV physical activity was measured with accelerometers and basic needs satisfaction and motivation through questionnaires at baseline (7th grade), midpoint (8th grade), and endpoint (9th grade), to evaluate the effects of the intervention. On the one hand, the adolescents’ voices illuminated that, within their environment, it is difficult to establish healthy physical activity habits. More specifically, the adolescents expressed a profound awareness of tempting screen-based activities as undermining their physical activity, and several stereotypical gender norms were highlighted as undermining the girls’ physical activity. On the other hand, the adolescents mentioned that they enjoyed engaging in physical activity. According to the adolescents, enjoyment related to physical activity was promoted through variation and options, experiencing and developing physical skills, and the presence of peers. The adolescents also suggested that social support facilitated their physical activity, and proposed some ideas on how the school could become more supportive of their physical activity. Through the empowerment-based school intervention, the adolescents were offered opportunities to engage in a variety of physical activities and to assess and critically reflect upon health-related information and recommendations. Further, the intervention involved the adolescents in the decision-making process and thus, arguably, facilitated participation and empowerment. Nonetheless, the development and implementation of the intervention led to a number of ethical dilemmas that required cautious consideration. During the course of the two-year intervention, there was a credible decrease in controlled motivation, autonomous motivation, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. There were no credible effects of the intervention on controlled motivation, autonomous motivation, or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Future school-based physical activity interventions, in multicultural areas of low socioeconomic status, are recommended to include multidimensional intervention approaches across contexts to counteract the decline in physical activity during adolescence and to achieve lasting change in adolescents’ physical activity.

  • Changes in amotivation, external regulation, and intrinsic regulation predicted dropout from youth soccer during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Regular sport participation is essential for youths physical, mental, and social health. Research shows, however, that sports participation peaks at around 10-14 years of age before declining through adolescence. Soccer, which is the most popular youth sport in Sweden, is no exception to dropout problems during adolescence. Purpose of the study: The purpose was to examine longitudinal changes in youth soccer players motivational regulations during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden, and how longitudinal changes in motivational regulations predicts dropout from youth soccer. Methods: Self-reported data was collected from 325 youth soccer players between 11 and 17 years of age (M = 13.08) at the beginning of the season in 2019 (TI) and 2020 (T2) and dropout data was reported by the coaches at the end of the season in 2021 (T3). Latent change score analyses, using Bayesian estimator, was used to examine change in the players motivational regulations.  Findings: There was a credible increase in amotivation (β = 0.14) and a credible decrease in identified regulation (β = -0.41) between T1 and T2. Changes in amotivation (β = 0.16), external regulation (β = 0.14), and intrinsic regulation (β = -0.15) between T1 and T2 were credible predictors of dropout from soccer at T3. Conclusion: To reduce the risk of dropout from youth soccer, during an ongoing pandemic, it is important to mitigate increases in amotivation and external regulation and to facilitate intrinsic motivation.

Objectives: The purpose was to examine longitudinal changes in youth soccer players motivational regulations during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden, and how longitudinal changes in motivational regulations predicts dropout from youth soccer.Design: Three-wave survey. • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between motivational profile, self-efficacy, basic needs satisfaction, exercise behavior, and well-being among Swedish university students. A set of the instruments including GLTEQ, SHIS, BPNES, BREQ-2 and BARSE was distributed at a university in southern Sweden. The respondents (n=260) included men (n=122) and women (n=138). For analysis and processing of the gathered data SPSS was used with Pearson’s r and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results showed that competence, autonomy and relatedness were positive predictors of self-determined motivation, whilst identified regulation, intrinsic regulation and barrier self-efficacy were positive predictors for strenuous exercise. Moreover, a regression analysis showed that only competence was a significant predictor for well-being; however, positive correlations were shown between all the basic needs and well-being. Satisfaction of the basic needs seem to result in more self-determined motivation and higher levels of barrier self-efficacy, which in turn increases the number of strenuous exercise sessions per week. Furthermore, satisfaction of the basic needs, especially competence through exercise, appears to be important for university students’ well-being. Strenuous exercise itself may also have the potential to positively influence well-being.

  • Facilitators of Physical Activity : Voices of Adolescents in a Disadvantaged Community
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - Basel : MDPI AG. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 14:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite increasing socioeconomic inequalities in the health and well-being of adolescents, the voices of adolescents in disadvantaged communities regarding facilitators of physical activity (PA) have received relatively little attention. In response, the purpose of this study was to illuminate what adolescents in a multicultural community of low socioeconomic status (SES) in Sweden convey concerning facilitators of PA. Adolescents (n = 53, aged 12–13 years) were recruited from a school in a multicultural community of low SES in Sweden. Following an interpretive approach, 10 focus group interviews were conducted to produce data for a qualitative content analysis. When the adolescents mentioned PA, they mostly referred to spontaneous PA rather than organized PA, and expressed that they enjoyed their PA engagement, which they stated was promoted by the variation of PA, available options for PA, their physical skills, and the presence of peers. They reported that social support from family and friends facilitated their PA, and they offered several suggestions regarding how the school environment could better support their PA. From the perspective of self-determination theory (SDT), the results stress the importance of facilitating intrinsic motivation with a supportive PA environment in which adolescents can satisfy their needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. © 2017 by the authors.

    • In this paper, we describe and critically reflect on the possibilities and challenges of developing and implementing an empowerment-based school intervention regarding healthy food and physical activity (PA), involving participants from a Swedish multicultural area characterized by low socioeconomic status. The 2-year intervention was continually developed and implemented, as a result of cooperation and shared decision making among researchers and the participants. All 54 participants were seventh graders, and the intervention comprised health coaching, health promotion sessions and a Facebook group. We experienced that participants valued collaborating with peers, and that they took responsibility in codeveloping and implementing the intervention. Participants expressed feeling listened to, being treated with respect and taken seriously. However, we also experienced a number of barriers that challenged our initial intentions of aiding participation and ambition to support empowerment. Moreover, it was challenging to use structured group health coaching and to work with goal-setting in groups of participants with shared, and sometimes competing, goals, wishes and needs related to food and PA. Successful experiences from this intervention was the importance of acquiring a broad and deep understanding of the context and participants, being open to negotiating, as well as adjusting the intervention. © The Author(s) 2019. • Purpose: In a recent published article series in International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity a marriage between Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) was proposed. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the rationale and development of individual counseling, based on the tenets of SDT and techniques drawn from MI, used to promote exercise adherence. Methods: A review of the literature relevant to the marriage of SDT and MI was conducted, and a counseling approach based on SDT and MI progressed. Guidelines for how to support individuals basic needs in individual counseling and scripts for individual counselling sessions to promote exercise adherence was developed. Results: To support the individuals need for autonomy, competence and relatedness different techniques and approaches was proposed. The counseling technique is now being tested in a randomized control intervention (intervention group  (n=50), control group (n=50)) to promote regular exercise among healthy, inactive adults. Conclusions: This paper outlines the rationale and development of individual counseling based on SDT and MI. Although a ‘complete marriage’ between SDT and MI may not be possible, an initial step towards a ‘new’ counseling approach has been made.

    • There is a growing body of research supporting the positive effects of physical activity and exercise on both psychological and physiological well-being. However, most people do not engage in regular exercise. Moreover, research shows that individuals who initiate a new exercise program drop out within three to six months. This begs the question, how do we get people to start and adhere to a regular exercise regimen? It is generally accepted that participation in sport will lead to positive outcomes including increased psycho-social development and physical health. However, research shows that sport participation can lead to damaged self-esteem, anxiety, depression, body image concerns, and disordered eating. This begs the question, how do we promote optimal functioning and well-being of athletes in the world of sports? The purpose of this workshop is to explore how Self-Determination Theory (SDT) can be used in practice to (1) promote physical activity/exercise based on the principles of Autonomy Support and ‘Motivational Interviewing’; (2) promote optimal functioning and well-being of athletes. The workshop will include the following: 1) a brief introduction 2) discussion in smaller groups 3) presentation of the group discussions.Recommended readingsBartholomew, K. J. (2011). • Purpose: Physical Education (PE) can be of importance for increasing pupils’ physical activity (PA) levels, whereas the PE teachers may play an important role in motivating the pupils to engage in PA. Based on the tenets of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the overall aim of this study is to explore social conditions that satisfies versus thwarts the basic psychological needs of pupils, and in turn impacts well-/ill-being and behavior outcomes in the PE context. Methods: A set of SDT-based instruments measuring perceived autonomy supportive/controlling teacher behaviors, needs satisfaction/thwarting, motivation, and physical (in)activity will be distributed to about 200 pupils in grades seven to nine.Structural equation modeling will be used to test a proposed working model. Results: On the one hand, it is expected that if the pupils perceive their PE teacher as autonomy supportive this will satisfy the pupils’ basic needs, and in turn lead to more self-determined motivation and enhanced well-being. Self-determined motivation will in turn predict healthy behaviors, such as PA. On the other hand, it is expected that if the pupils perceive their PE teacher as controlling this will thwart the pupils’ basic needs, and in turn lead to more controlled motivation and greater ill-being. Controlled motivation will in turn predict unhealthy behaviors, such as physical inactivity. Conclusions: There is a lack of knowledge in the literature regarding the effects of controlling teachers’ behavior on pupils’ needs thwarting and ill-being. This knowledge should be considered essential when developing future interventions and educating new PE teachers.

    • Purpose: Despite the growing body of research supporting the positive effects of exercise on both psychological and physiological well-being, most people do not engage in regular exercise. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, the purpose of this study was to examine relationships between basic needs satisfaction, self-efficacy, motivation, exercise behavior and well-being among Swedish university students. Methods: A set of instruments measuring basic needs satisfaction, barrier self-efficacy, motivation, well-being, and exercise behaviors was distributed at a university in southern Sweden. To analyze and process the gathered data, SPSS was used with Pearson’s r and Multiple Regression Analysis. Results: The results showed that competence, autonomy and relatedness were positive predictors of self-determined motivation. Identified regulation, intrinsic regulation and barrier self-efficacy were positive predictors for strenuous exercise. Moreover, positive correlations between all the basic needs, strenuous exercise and well-being were shown. No significant correlations between light or moderate exercise and the independent variables appeared. Conclusions: This study provides further support for Self-Determination Theory and Self-Efficacy Theory. To promote strenuous exercise and well-being among Swedish university students it appears important to create a need supportive exercise environment, where the basic needs can be satisfied.

  • What undermines healthy habits with regard to physical activity and food? : Voices of adolescents in a disadvantaged community
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to illuminate factors that undermine the healthy habits of adolescents from a multicultural community with low socioeconomic status (S.E.S.) in Sweden with regard to physical activity (P.A.) and food, as stated in their own voices. Adolescents (n = 53, 12–13 y/o) were recruited from one school situated in a multicultural community characterized by low S. E.S. Embracing an interpretive approach, 10 focus-group interviews were conducted to produce data for the study. The focus-group interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using qualitative content analysis. The analysis resulted in two major themes: (1) the availability of temptations is large, and support from the surroundings is limited; and (2) norms and demands set the agenda. The adolescents’ voices illuminate a profound awareness and the magnitude of tempting screen-based activities as undermining their P.A. and healthy food habits. Moreover, several gender boundaries were highlighted as undermining girls’ P.A. and healthy food habits. The adolescents’ stories illuminated that it is difficult for them, within their environment, to establish healthy habits with regard to P.A. and food. To facilitate the adolescents’ healthy habits, we suggest that support from family, friends, the school, and society at large is essential.

  • Stirring the motivational soup: withinperson latent profiles of motivation in exercise
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. - London : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1479-5868. ; 14:4, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The purpose of the present study was to use a person-oriented analytical approach to identify latent motivational profiles, based on the different behavioural regulations for exercise, and to examine differences in satisfaction of basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy and relatedness) and exercise behaviour across these motivational profiles. Methods: Two samples, consisting of 1084 and 511 adults respectively, completed exercise-related measures of behavioural regulation and psychological need satisfaction as well as exercise behaviour. Latent profile analyses were used to identify motivational profiles. Results: Six profiles, representing different combinations of regulations for exercise, were found to best represent data in both samples. Some profiles were found in both samples (e.g., low motivation profile, self-determined motivation profile and self-determined with high introjected regulation profile), whereas others were unique to each sample. In line with the Self-Determination Theory, individuals belonging to more self-determined profiles demonstrated higher scores on need satisfaction. Conclusions: The results support the notions of motivation being a multidimensional construct and that people have different, sometimes competing, reasons for engaging in exercise. The benefits of using person-oriented analyses to examine within-person interactions of motivation and different regulations are discussed.
