  • Manufacturing in Sweden: How competitive is Sweden as a manufacturing location?
  • 2015
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this report we have asked the question whether it is possible, and indeed worthwhile, to sustain manufacturing in Europe. First and foremost, the macro‐economic analysis shows that manufacturing still represents an important part of a balanced economy. Sweden, like Germany and others, still feature strong contributions of their manufacturing sector to the national Gross alue Added. However, it is also clear that manufacturing fortunes differ greatly across Europe, and that the manufacturing sector is under pressure in many countries. Manufacturing’s survivalin Europe thus should not be taken for granted. To further investigate what it takes to retain manufacturing in Sweden, we have interviewed leading Swedish manufacturing firms. Our findings paint a clear picture. First and foremost we find that higher labour cost is not necessarily a “killer criterion” for the locus of manufacturing as many other favourable advantages offset the labour cost advantage: skills, productivity, proximity and quality of suppliers, and others. Secondly, our findings also show how collaboration with unions and worker councils is a unique Swedish strength compared to other EU countries, while skill levels and quality of local suppliers are strengths compared to low cost regions. Interestingly though, collaboration with the Swedish government is identified as a unique weakness for Sweden, and the comparatively high failure rate of Swedish firms’ offshoring ventures stands testimony to this. Labour cost is not all that matters, but Sweden must be able to compete in total cost comparison and when understanding and utilising its unique strengths. In conclusion we argue that manufacturing still plays a crucial role in the Swedish economy in terms of Value Added, employment, and exports. Its survival however is not guaranteed. Sweden, like any other developed country, needs to actively support its manufacturing industry. Links to customers and suppliers, and government, matter more than commonly thought. In this context it is important to stress that global manufacturing is a growth sector, and at present other developing countries (e.g. BRICS) and regions are capturing most of this growth, while industrial nations see a stagnation of manufacturing GVA. Manufacturing thus is not the “sunset industry” many make it out to be. It has been, and remains, a prize worth fighting for.

  • Analysing the changed supply chain rules during the acute phase of disruptions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) Conference, Barcelona, 29 Juni-3 Juli.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Supply chain mega-disruptions and the following decisions taken by actors in the supply chains and other stakeholders, e.g., governments, cause rapidly changing ambiguous and uncertain conditions. This paper explores the concept of supply chain rules during mega-disruptions and analyzes the role of different actors and how they respond. The focus is on transport services involving shipping. The physical goods flow is affected in terms of capacity, performance, governmental exemptions and support, and stakeholder pressure. Companies need to understand and interpret but can also impact supply chain rules and trade associations serve as the unifying voice towards governments, establishing macro-resilience.

  • Remember the pandemic? Analyzing long-term implications for actors in international supply chains
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: 36th Annual Conference for Nordic Researchers in Logistics (NOFOMA), Stockholm, 13-14 Juni.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Covid-19 pandemic implied a disruption of a magnitude not experienced by generations of supply chain managers. Short-term effects on international supply chains have been extensively covered, but the long-term implications remain poorly understood, especially regarding how lessons learned can help companies become more resilient to subsequent disruptions. Consequently, the purpose of the paper is to analyse the pandemic’s potential long-term implication for actors in supply chains. 26 interviews were performed with senior managers of shippers, shipping companies, ports, logistics service providers and industry associations active in Sweden. The paper uses a framework based on retention bins, in which supply chain memory is stored, as well as a classification of implications on four supply chain levels. Five themes for long-term implications are retained in a supply chain memory; 1) internal status of logistics, 2) storage strategies, 3) communication and information sharing, 4) preparedness for coming disruptions through organizational changes and risk assessment, and, 5) risk awareness and changed mindset. Different reasons for long-lasting implications as well as reasons for the absence of other long-term implications have been identified. The empirical study is limited to respondents in organizations located in Sweden. The identified practical implications serve as a checklist for resilience-building for companies to learn from Covid-19. Research on long-term implications is sparse but important – especially given the increasing geopolitical tensions which may cause further major supply chain disruptions.

  • Additive Manufacturing of Slow-Moving Automotive Spare Parts: A Supply Chain Cost Assessment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing. - : MDPI AG. - 2504-4494. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study develops a cost model for the additive manufacturing (AM)-produced spare parts supply chain in the automotive industry. Moreover, we evaluate the economic feasibility of AM for slow-moving automotive spare parts by comparing the costs of the traditional manufacturing (TM) spare parts supply chain (SPSC) with centralized, outsourced AM SPSC. Data from a multiple case study of an OEM in the automotive industry regarding SPSC is utilized. The supply chain costs of 14 individual spare parts were analyzed, and the total SPSC cost for the AM and TM, were compared. Three of the fourteen parts showed potential for cost-savings, if they were produced with AM instead of TM. In this context, AM polymer parts showed greater potential than metal to replace TM as the more economical option of manufacturing from a total supply chain cost perspective. This study shows that the AM competitiveness to TM, from a financial perspective, increases for spare parts with low demand, high minimum order quantity, and high TM production price. The SPSC cost model included: cost of production, transport, warehousing, and service costs. This study contributes to the emerging field of part identification for AM and the existing literature regarding cost modeling in SPSCs.

  • Towards Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) Integration
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nofoma Conference 2021.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Sales and operations planning (S&OP) is a tactical level planning process between the demand and supply as well as other functions in an organization. The aim of the paper is to identify and analyze interfaces in S&OP and to conceptualize and explore integration in those interfaces. Design/methodology/approach: The paper builds on literature on integration and its mechanisms in S&OP and adopts a qualitative and explorative research approach. Two companies with established S&OP processes were selected as cases and interviews were conducted with managers in positions having an overview of the process. Findings: Based on the analysis of the two case companies, eight different interfaces were identified in the two case companies. The interfaces were analysed with regard to which mechanisms used to reach integration. Coordination stands out as the most important mechanism, which is facilitated by process, organisation, and technology. Research limitations/implications: The paper starts to conceptualize S&OP integration at the interface level. Based on the case analysis of individual interfaces, initial understanding of how coordination, collaboration, and alignment results in integration was created. The paper ends by raising future research questions regarding S&OP integration. Practical implications: Managers involved in S&OP are involved daily in the interfaces. This paper add knowledge on which mechanisms to use to integrate interfaces. Original/value: Based on identifying a range of interfaces to be integrated in a well-functioning S&OP, this paper starts a discussion of the meaning of integration in S&OP in relation to individual interfaces as well as cross interfaces.

  • Does organization structure matter? : On the relationship between the structure, functioning and effectiveness
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management (IJITM). - London : World Scientific Publishing (UK) Ltd. - 0219-8770 .- 1793-6950. ; 3:3, s. 237-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managers often see new organizational design as the solution to many problems. This paper explores the relationship between organization structure (design), functioning of organizations, and effectiveness. A study of 320 companies showed that the structural variable, decentralization, marginally affected the way in which organizations function. Functional variables had a minor impact on profitability. No direct relationship between structure and effectiveness was found. When functioning is conceptualized as a mediating factor no direct causality between structure and effectiveness is implied, but a relationship between structure, function and effectiveness. To improve effectiveness, reorganizing is probably not the first option to consider.

  • Big Data in spare parts supply chains: The potential of using product-in-use data in aftermarket demand planning
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 48:5, s. 524-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore and propose how product-in-use data can be used in, and improve the performance of, the demand planning process for automotive aftermarket services. A literature review and a single-case study investigate the underlying reasons for the demand for spare parts by conducting in-depth interviews, observing actual demand-generating activities, and studying the demand planning process. This study identifies the relevant product-in-use data and divides them into five main categories. We have analysed how product-in-use data is best utilised, in planning spare parts with different attributes, e.g. different life-cycle phases and demand frequencies. Furthermore, we identify eight potentially relevant areas of application of product-in-use data in the demand planning process, and elaborate on their performance effects. This study details the understanding of what impact context has on the potential performance effects of using product-in-use data in aftermarket demand planning. Propositions generate several strands for future research. This study shows the potential impact of using product-in-use data, using eight different types of interventions for spare parts, in the aftermarket demand planning. The literature focuses on single applications of product-in-use data, but would benefit from considering the context of application. This study presents interventions and explores how these enable improved demand planning by analysing usage and effects.

  • Sales and operations execution: An explorative study on potential effects
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nofoma conference 2020.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose Sales and operations planning have a long history in practice and has been researched extensively. It has been proposed that this tactical concept needs to be aligned with a more operational, short-term concept, hence the purpose of this paper is to investigate how sales and operations execution (S&OE) can enhance the performance of a supply chain by analyzing contingency factors regarding design and use. Methodology A multiple-case study approach investigates the potential outcome of implementing a S&OE process in various contexts. Empirical data from several firms in various industries are analyzed according to common and unique factors affecting the potential result. Findings his study identifies critical design for an S&OE process to have a positive outcome in different contexts. Furthermore, relevant data is identified, as well as actors essential for successful usage. Finally, we present, by using knowledge management theory, the importance of integrating S&OE in the planning hierarchy and how the S&OE practice leads to results. Research implications This study details the understanding of how sales and operations execution affects the supply chain performance, given different contextual aspects. Practical implications This study shows the potential impact of implementing S&OE for different types of businesses, as well as giving guiding principles for its design. Original/value S&OE as a concept is today merely described as white papers and consultancy reports. To our best knowledge, this is the first academic study that explores the sales and execution phenomenon in a real-world context.

  • Nordic research in logistics and supply chain management: an empirical analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - : Emerald. - 0960-0035. ; 38:6, s. 452-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this data-based analysis is to report and reflect on the characteristics ofthe academic discipline concerned with logistics and supply chain management (SCM) as it isconducted in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). The paperfurther seeks to explain variations in the research field in terms of the demographics, research domainsand methodologies, and publication patterns of the study’s respondents.Design/methodology/approach – An e-mail questionnaire survey was distributed to 353researchers based in the Nordic countries. With 144 answers returned, the response rate was 41 per cent.Findings – The study did not provide a clear picture of a distinct Nordic research paradigm applyingto the study of logistics and SCM. The analysis shows as characteristic of research issues pursued byNordic researchers the focus on supply chains and networks and the use of dyads, chains or networksof organizations as levels of analysis. The use of case study methodology and a highly diversifiedpublication pattern were likewise evident. Most researchers were found to rely heavily on externalresearch funding. Significant differences were also identified for research conducted by researchersholding PhD degrees as compared to research by respondents with lower degrees, for researchersaffiliated with institutions based in the technical sciences in comparison to those in the social sciences, and for institutions according to their varying degrees of experience with research in the field andexternal funding.Research limitations/implications – The research reported here may help individual researchersraise their consciousness about their own research.Originality/value – This is the first empirical study to analyze research paradigms within logisticsand SCM in the Nordic countries. It identifies a number of significant differences in regard to researchpatterns among various categories of researchers and institutions.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Human Resource Development Review. - 1534-4843 .- 1552-6712. ; 22:2, s. 251-274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In response to the increasing difficulty of obtaining high quality peer reviews, our invited paper describes the concept of review avoidance and why this phenomenon occurs. In reaffirming the professional responsibilities and potential benefits of reviewing, we also emphasize the interdependent nature of the ideal peer review process. We suggest that the review process is a three-way street where the respective roles and responsibilities of authors, editors and editorial teams, and reviewers are inextricably linked. We present thematic illustrations of undesirable reviewer comments, and a brief synthesis of broad themes in the literature on high-quality reviewing. The synthesis is complemented by a master reviewer’s fine-grained perspective on crafting high quality reviews. A final Appendix presents additional sources that may be informative for prospective reviewers, submitting authors, and those mentors and colleagues who may wish to provide guidance and training to them.

  • Exploring the impact from digitalization on business relationships in welding manufacturing
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Digitalization has a vast impact on industry in terms of firm strategies and business models (Jocevski, et al., 2020). The aim of the paper is to explore digitalization’s impact on a firm’s business relationships and networks, including both existing supplier and customer relationships and development of new ones. The content of current relationships is explored in terms of shared activities, resources and actor interaction.   The paper is based on a case study of BETA, an industrial firm and manufacturer of welding equipment and consumables. BETA is currently developing and implementing digital technologies in their products and services. This digitalization journey does not only impact their internal process but also their business relationships. It might in turn lead to new business relationships. BETA is currently offering digital solutions to its customers, the so-called BETA Digital Solutions. Their prototype of the digital cloud platform was launched in 2018. Shortly after that, the commercialization started. By using cloud platform and IoT, BETA promises to its customers maximization of their welding productivity, quality consistence, downtime reduction, and real time information about energy and wire consumption. BETA has been working to expand its digital solutions portfolio and platform functionalities. Results of the paper regard learning points from the digitalization journey and describe the various practiced digitalized offerings and business models of BETA. The results build on the framework by Pagani & Pardo (2017) and preliminary include identification of key interfaces in business relationships in context of digitalization. As it is now and planning for next steps, on the customer side, BETA has been commercializing few digital solutions, while more advanced service offerings, with some with degrees of circularity, are still in the BETA’s roadmap and their business models are still under development. BETA’s plan is to implement a pilot/proof in a near future for these advanced service offerings and business models, in collaboration with customers. Regarding the supplier side, BETA sees the importance of supply chain management and works continuously with their current suppliers as well as develops contacts with new suppliers for digitalization solutions.

  • Integrating the performance management process of on-time delivery with suppliers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 13:3, s. 225-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the importance of integrating the performance management (PM) process of on-time delivery with suppliers and analyses the perceived degree of such integration. It describes how the PM process of on-time delivery is managed in manufacturing companies and compares the integration and management issues of on-time delivery between companies with high and low perceived on-time delivery performance. Analysis is based on a survey study of Swedish manufacturing companies in 10 industrial sectors. The focus is on on-time delivery from the respondents' most important supplier. The PM activities defining metrics, target setting, measurement and analysis are not highly integrated between customers and suppliers when measuring on-time delivery. This is especially true for measurement activity, which is the activity with most issues to manage and integrate. The PM issues most significantly related to high on-time delivery performance were automated data collection, registration and report generation.

  • Obstacles to supply chain integration of the performance management process in buyer-supplier dyads: The buyers' perspective
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - : Emerald. - 1758-6593 .- 0144-3577. ; 29:1, s. 77-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explain to what degree supplier relationship obstacles and operational tool obstacles hinder supply chain integration of the performance management (PM) process. Design/methodology/approach – This is a hypothetical-deductive study, where the results are based on a survey of 257 purchasing managers in nine manufacturing industries in Sweden.Findings – Supplier relationship obstacles (lack of trust, different goals and priorities and lack of parallel communication structure) were found to significantly hinder PM process integration the most, which is in accordance with previous studies. The operational tool obstacles (manual performance data management and non-standardized performance metrics) were seen on an overall level to hinder PM process integration. However, the hypothesis that non-standardized performance metricshinder PM process integration was not verified, which does not accord with previous studies.Research limitations/implications – The use of single informants in data collection presents a limitation of the study.Practical implications – Contrary to previous studies, the paper has applied a broader, quantitative survey methodology, and hence provides deeper knowledge about the impact of obstacles on PM process integration. It identifies critical obstacles which are important for industry to overcome.Originality/value – Most previous studies of supply chain PM are either case- or experience-based. Here, hypotheses are tested on empirical data and general results presented regarding lack of supplier relationships and operational tools as obstacles for supply chain integration of PM.

    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to generate a performance model for an order‐to‐delivery (OTD) process in delivery scheduling environments. It aims to do this with a triadic approach, encompassing a customer, a supplier and a logistics service provider.Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes the form of a conceptual analysis and a triadic case study on performance measurement requirements in an OTD process characterized by delivery scheduling, and generating performance models.Findings – Two OTD process performance models, one for the supplier's delivery sub‐process and one for the customer's delivery scheduling, the logistics service provider's transportation and the customer's good receipt sub‐process, in delivery scheduling environments are generated.Research limitations/implications – A single case study limits the levels of external validity and reliability to analytical generalization.Practical implications – The generated performance models include definitions of four sub‐processes and outline ten performance dimensions that should be of relevance for several companies to apply.Originality/value – This is the first approach that generates performance models for a triadic OTD process for use in delivery scheduling environments.

  • Ingår i: Industrial management & data systems. - : Emerald. - 0263-5577 .- 1758-5783. ; 110:8, s. 1159-1175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The paper aims to explore how supply chain performance management (PM) isaffected by the decisions made in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system lifecycle phases.Design/methodology/approach – Datawere collected in amultiple case study of fourmanufacturing companies.Findings – Four PM activities and three ERP system lifecycle phases were described and analyzed. Eight propositions were generated from theory and the case analyses. Detailed demand specifications could have improved target setting and reporting possibilities, PM education and training seem to be important in both the implementation and the use phase and supply chain PM is highly affected in the use phase.Research limitations/implications  – The paper is explorative. A required next step would be to test the generated propositions on a larger population.Practical implications – Propositions of what supply chain PM issues manufacturing companies should consider in the ERP system selection, implementation and use phases are presented. The results indicate that a lot of supply chain PM improvements can be realized within the use phase of an existing ERP system. Originality/value – No previous paper has focused upon how to consider supply chain PM when implementing ERP systems. This is needed because previous studies have identified ERP systems as obstacles for supply chain PM.

  • Supplier flexibility in the order-to-delivery process – a customer perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 51:1, s. 4-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flexibility is one enabler of efficient use of resources, and is therefore an antecedent to sustainability. The purpose of this article is to identify supplier flexibility variables in, and related to, the order-to-delivery (OTD) process and categorize them into a framework, followed by empirically exploring the framework. A perception-based survey was sent to Swedish purchasing managers. 289 responses were received. After descriptive gap analysis, exploratory factor analysis was applied to structure the responses into factors. This formed the basis for hierarchical linear regression analysis, explaining supplier flexibility. A conceptual framework, specifying supplier flexibility into volume, delivery and information exchange dimensions and relating these dimensions to the OTD process, was developed. Significant negative gaps between actual and demanded volume flexibility and delivery flexibility were identified, while significant positive gaps were found for information exchange flexibility. The factor analysis revealed three factors. The regression analysis verified that OTD-related information exchange flexibility and OTD-related volume and delivery flexibility explain the variation in OTD-specific flexibility, and are important antecedents for supplier flexibility in the OTD process. Research limitations/implications A contribution to research is the framework – with defined, related and empirically validated flexibility types. The study proposes a perception-based way to capture supplier flexibility in the OTD process, which is of practical relevance when evaluating suppliers. Identifying, conceptualizing and capturing types of supplier flexibility in the OTD process is new related to academic literature. The wide empirical study, mapping supplier flexibility gaps, is unique in its focus.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - : Emerald. - 0144-3577 .- 1758-6593. ; 27:1, s. 90-107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper aims to describe the extent of supplier access to customer forecast information and the perceived quality of such information and also to explain the impact of forecast information access and forecast information quality (FIQ) on supply chain performance.Design/methodology/approach – FIQ is defined, and a measurement instrument is developed from theory. The analysis is based on a survey of the most important suppliers of 136 Swedish companies.Findings – Findings show that a large proportion of the suppliers receive customer forecasts, but that the FIQ is lower further upstream in the supply chain and, in some variables, lower for make-to-order suppliers. The greatest information quality deficiency of the forecast was that it was considered unreliable. The only significant difference in supply chain performance found between make-to-stock suppliers with and without access to forecast was related to the use of safety stock in finished goods inventory.Research limitations/implications – The study contains two types of conclusions: those developed from the conceptual discussion in the theoretical framework and those of the empirical study. In the theoretical framework, measurement instruments for FIQ and supply chain performance (corrective actions, preventive actions and customer service performance) were developed. The study identified several empirical relationships, but it was conducted on a sample with a lot of variation.Practical implications – The understanding of the performance impact of FIQ. FIQ shows quality deficiencies on all variables, which indicates room for improvement.Originality/value – Research on supply chain information quality as well as dyadic research approaches are rare.

  • Assessing consequences of low cost sourcing in China
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - : Emerald. - 0960-0035. ; 39:3, s. 227-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to develop a framework for low-cost sourcing assessment andto explore the consequences of low-cost sourcing in China for a European manufacturer.Design/methodology/approach – The low-cost sourcing framework generated from literature andthe consequence analysis is based on a case study of a European company that has outsourced part ofits casting processes to Chinese suppliers.Findings – Characteristics of low-cost sourcing are based on a literature review divided into threecategories: country characteristics, supply network structure, and supply network relationships andthe case study shows that these three categories of characteristics jointly create negative effects.A two-directional cause and effect relationship is proposed between the characteristics and theoperational supply chain performances. The presented low-cost sourcing assessment frameworkshould be a good starting point for low-cost sourcing assessment, including mapping a firm’s totalcharacteristics, and for analysing their performance impact.Research limitations/implications – The conducted single case study is not enough for identifying, formulating, and validating all existing relationships between the low-cost sourcing characteristics. Thepresent study has identified the existence of the relationships but has not evaluated their levels of impact.Practical implications – Managers should be aware of how suppliers in low-cost countries mayaffect the structures, relations, and operational supply chain performances of the supply network. Thispaper presents a sourcing assessment framework enabling describing what dimensions of thesourcing characteristics would be affected by sourcing to a specific area of the world and whatconsequences and performance effects this would have.Originality/value – Few prior studies have focused on companies with already establishedrelationships with low-cost-country suppliers and how these companies should make the best out ofthese supply chains. This study takes a holistic perspective on low-cost sourcing and identifies severalstreams for further research.

    • This paper examines how knowledge properties of a transferred manufacturing activity between units in an international manufacturing network impact performance during the transfer phase and the phase after steady state is reached. Survey data from 178 companies, we use hierarchical regression to test the relationships. We find knowledge properties as a group significantly affect both performance measures when controlling for the effects of sender unit experience, sender unit size and receiver unit experience. Thus, the activities transferred impact the success of the transfer. Sender unit experience and receiver unit experience have relatively strongest performance effects after steady state is reached. Testing the performance effects of single knowledge property dimensions, we identify independency to have the strongest relative performance effect, validates and advances previous research. This as it is one of the first survey studies to link activity independency and manufacturing transfer performance. We also identify several strands of further research.

    • Outsourcing of manufacturing leaves two options for the structuring of the supply network: either complete outsourcing of an item or process, or combining external sourcing and in-house manufacturing. The objective of this paper is to explain the effect on performance of various strategies of combining in-house manufacturing and outsourced manufacturing. The analysis is based on a case study of a European manufacturer (EM) that has outsourced part of its casting processes to Chinese suppliers. The strategieswere tested by means of a simulation study and compared in terms of their effects on inventory performance. The study showed at significance level p

  • Future changes in sourcing patterns: 2025 outlook for the Swedish textile industry
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092. ; 25:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to analyse ongoing changes of sourcing patterns with regard to offshoring and reshoring, as well as the reasons behind these changes. The paper is based on a survey of expectations regarding changing sourcing patterns from now to 2025 in a sample of 119 Swedish buyers of textiles and apparels. This research approach supplements previous studies primarily focusing on contemporary and historical changes. The most important findings related to the dynamics of sourcing patterns are: (i) increasing sourcing in Europe, and (ii) decreasing sourcing in China, partly substituted by expansion in Bangladesh and other low-cost Asian countries. Increasing sourcing from Europe stems from ambitions to enhance supply chain responsiveness in relation to customers through nearshoring. The changes within Asia represent another pattern: low-cost seeking companies plan to turn to countries with lower costs than China. This pattern illustrates extended offshoring through far-shoring. Consequently, the study shows that both nearshoring and far-shoring represent important sourcing approaches. The resulting patterns show considerable variety owing to diversity in contextual conditions. Social, environmental and political factors are expected to become increasingly important for future sourcing decisions. Of the firm-internal factors, capabilities related to flexibility and responsiveness are assumed to have the most significant impact. The study shows how these factors in combination with other capabilities, firm size, product assortment and attitudes to geographical proximity drive various sourcing patterns.

    • In this paper, we investigate the coevolution of the supply network and procurement strategies in the context of semiconductors and electronics for the automotive industry over 3 decades. We aim to explain how procurement strategy interrelates with changes in supply network structure and what the implications of a hub-centric structure network structure are for procurement in supply. Design/methodology/approach: We collected in-depth primary and secondary data that stretched back to 1996 from a leading automotive European original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and its network. Using social network analysis (SNA), we identified OEMs’ procurement focus and mapped the evolution of the supply network, the links in the network, and the environmental forces impacting the strategies and the network. Findings: Our findings describe the supply network for semiconductor and electronic components to the automotive industry. The findings suggest that a focus on cost can lead to a Tier 1-centric network structure with many tiers that can fail to assure supply or capture innovation when the external environment is marked by high uncertainty. In such situations, increasing complexity by creating more links in the network can improve transparency and contribute to supply assurance and innovation. Practical implications: The findings indicate that managers should consider the role of the supply network in selecting their strategy to attain objectives of cost, innovation, and supply assurance. Originality/value: This paper presents empirical-based insights into the automotive semiconductor and electronic component supply chain (SC), the unexpected implications of hub-centric supply networks, and the use of SNA in the SC in context.

  • Digital Product Fitting in Retail Supply Chains: Maturity Levels and Potential Outcomes
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Supply Chain Management. - 1359-8546. ; 24:5, s. 574-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – In retail, product fitting is a critical operational practice. For many products, the operational outcome of the retail supply chain is determined by the customer physically fitting products. Digital product fitting is an emerging operational practice in retail that uses digital models of products and customers to match product supply to customer requirements. In this paper, we explore potential supply chain outcomes of digitalizing the operational practice of product fitting. The purpose is to explore and propose the potential of the practice to improve responsiveness to customer requirements and the utilization of existing variety in mass-produced products. Design/methodology/approach – A maturity model of product fitting is developed to specify three levels of digitalization and potential outcomes for each level. Potential outcomes are developed based on empirical data from a case survey of three technology-developing companies, 13 retail cases and a review of academic literature. Findings – With increasing maturity of digital product fitting, the practice can be used for more purposes. Besides matching product supply to customer demand, the practice can improve material flow, customer relationship management, assortment planning, and product development. The practice of digital product fitting is most relevant for products where the final product configuration is difficult to make to order, product and customer attributes are easily measurable, and tacit knowledge of customers and products can be formalized using digital modeling. Research limitations/implications – Potential outcomes are conceptualized and proposed. Further research is needed to observe actual outcomes and understand the mechanisms for both proposed and surprising outcomes in specific contexts. Practical implications – The maturity model helps companies assess how their operations can benefit from digital product fitting and the efforts required to achieve beneficial outcomes. Original/value – This paper is a first attempt to describe the potential outcomes of introducing digital product fitting in retail supply chains.

  • Reducing retail supply chain costs of product returns using digital product fitting
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management. - 0960-0035. ; 51:8, s. 877-896
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper investigates how fit uncertainty impacts product return costs in online retailing and how digital product fitting, a pre-sales fitting practice, can reduce fit uncertainty. Design/methodology/approach – We analyzed the current performance of a retailer’s e-commerce and return operations by estimating costs generated by product returns, including product handling costs, tied-up capital, inventory holding costs, transportation costs, and order-picking costs. The estimated costs were built on 2,229 return transactions from a Scandinavian fashion footwear retailer. We then tested a digital product fitting technology with the retailer’s products and estimated how such technology could affect product returns. Findings – The cost of a return is approximately 17% of the prime cost. The major cost elements are product handling costs and transportation costs, which together amount to 72% of the total costs. If well-calibrated, the fitting technology can cut fit-related return costs by up to 80%. Our findings show how customers reacted to the fitting technology: it was unable to verify fit every time, but it serves as a useful and effective support tool for customers when placing orders. Research limitations/implications – Virtual fit verification using digital product fitting is key to retailers to reduce fit-related returns. Digital product fitting using 3D-scanning is more appropriate for some products, but it is unsuitable for products that are difficult to measure and scan. Original/value – The paper contributes an empirical estimate of retail supply chain costs associated with fit uncertainty, as well as theoretical understanding of the role of pre-sales fit verification in avoiding product returns.

    • One factor that affects product returns is fit uncertainty – when customers have difficulties evaluating the fit of a product pre-purchase. This paper determines the proportion of returns arising from fit uncertainty when end-customers order fashion shoes online and assesses the supply chain effects of fit-related returns and how digital product fitting technology can mitigate fit-related returns.

  • Perceived quality deficiencies of demand information and their consequences
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics: Research and Applications. ; 11:4, s. 295-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the quality of demand information exchanged between customers and suppliers in supply chains. The first sub-purpose of the study is to describe the level and consequences of informationqualitydeficiencies of order and forecast information received by suppliers from their main customer. The second sub-purpose is to describe and compare the characteristics of companies and information with high and low information quality. The paper is based on a survey of Swedish manufacturing industry with 219 respondents. The results indicate that forecasts are considered deficient in terms of reliability, conciseness, timeliness and credibility while orders are considered deficient in terms of reliability. Further, companies with high levels of information-quality deficiencies were characterised by less active information management, and used less advanced planning software.
