  • The Territorialisation of the Grocery Shopper: eco-ethical asceticism and environmental nostalgia.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Territories, Environments, Governance: Explorations in Territoriology. - London : Routledge. - 9781032051666 ; , s. 153-173
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter we focus on the territorialisation of grocery shoppers and their routes and routines in the city district Western Harbour in Malmö. The Western Harbour is an urban area close to the sea that was built to afford a sustainable and ecologically-friendly way of life. Here we are interested in how the mundane territorialised role of the grocery shopper has evolved among the inhabitants of this area, as well as in the impact of the design and aesthetics of the built environment on this process of territorialisation. The study is primarily based on six residents’ experiences of shopping, where routines and routes have been investigated through semi-structured interviews supplemented by participant-produced photographs and captions. Based on the findings, we discuss how eco-ethical and ascetic practices are developed in relation to the environment, as well as the role of different aspects and feelings of environmental nostalgia in stabilising the peculiar territorial role and sort of the grocery shopper.

  • Differentiating the time-geography of recreational running
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Mobilities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-0101 .- 1745-011X. ; 15:4, s. 575-587
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a relational time-geography approach to differentiate the geographies of recreational activities, whose place cannot be pinned down to a single specific infrastructure or area and therefore risks being marginalised in planning. Running is used as a case study. Based on diary-interviews, we have identified three different exercises/places used alternately by the respondents: the forest run; ‘the most boring route in the world’; and the tourist run. We argue that the time-geography of runners could be conceptualised as a rhythm of place dependencies, where different places afford complementary qualities. By allowing for a negotiation of the spatio-temporal constraints of everyday life, these different places (and their affordances) are of crucial importance for motivation and exercise.

  • Demanding Certainty : A Critical Examination of Swedish Spatial Planning for Safety.
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation constitutes a critical examination of Swedish spatial planning for safety. Spatial planning for safety rests on a number of assumptions about the desired order of the world. These assumptions appear as given and unproblematic, making the formulation of alternatives appear unnecessary. This dissertation provides an account of how, and on what basis a spatial planning problem such as ‘fear and insecurity’ is formulated and acted upon. It is an account of how and what conceptions of knowledge operate to legitimise ideological representations of spatial planning problems. And furthermore, what these ideological representations of spatial planning problems substantially entail, so as to allow for a political spatial planning practice that formulates and deliberates alternatives. This is carried out by analysing assumptions of public life and knowledge within Swedish spatial planning for safety. This dissertation finds that Swedish spatial planning for safety constitutes ‘certainty’ as a hegemonic criterion for participating in public life, which operates to limit the articulation of alternative discourses in spatial planning for safety. The desired for safe public life is organised based on visual certainty, where the urban fabric should be configured in such ways as to allow for stereotypical visual identifications of one another. Such a public life reflects an individualised practice, where perceptions of fear should be governed by individuals themselves, by independently assessing situations and environments in terms of risks. This individualised conduct is coupled with the fostering of active subjects, which encompasses being engaged in the local residential areas as well as in one another. Such substantial content of ‘planning for safety’ brings about tensions in terms of its ideological legitimating basis, by moving from principles of ‘rights’, where the individual constitutes the first ethical planning subject, to unitary principles of ‘collective values’, in which the ‘community’ constitutes the first ethical planning subject. These presuppositions are further enabled through the ways in which knowledge is conceptualised in spatial planning. This dissertation argues that a hegemonic instrumental emphasis on knowledge in spatial planning prevails. Having such a hegemonic emphasis on knowledge has the implication that even though spatial planning adopts different assumptions, or moves between alternative assumptions of knowledge, the knowledge becomes meaningful only in its instrumental implementation. The instrumental emphasis on knowledge should be regarded in light of the rational and goal-oriented nature of project-based planning, which constitutes a logic that constrains the emphasis on knowledge in spatial planning. This dissertation argues further that if spatial planning should be considered a political practice that debates its goals and values, a politicisation of the emphasis on knowledge in spatial planning is imperative.

  • Compact City Planning and Development : Emerging Practices and Strategies for Achieving the Goals of Sustainable Development
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Development in the Built Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 2666-1659. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compact city planning and development has, over the last 30 years or so, been the hegemonic response to the challenges of sustainable development. Global and local policies promote the compact city model due to the positive outcomes of its design principles and strategics as to achieving sustainable cities in terms of their environmental, economic, and social goals. The aim of this paper is to examine how the compact city model is practiced and justified in urban planning and development with respect to the three dimensions of sustainability, and whether any kind of practical progress has been made in this regard. To illuminate the phenomenon of the compact city, a descriptive case study is adopted as a qualitative research methodology where the empirical basis is mainly formed by urban plans in two Swedish cities: Gothenburg and Helsingborg, in combination with qualitative interview data, secondary data, and scientific literature. This study shows that compactness, density, diversity, mixed land use, sustainable transportation, and green space are the prevalent design principles and strategies of compact city planning and development, with the latter being contextually linked to the concept of green structure, an institutional setup under which the two Swedish cities operate. Moreover, at the core of the compact city model is the clear synergy between the underlying principles and strategies in terms of their cooperation to produce combined effects greater than the sum of their separate effects with respect to the benefits of sustainability as regards its tripartite value. Further, this study demonstrates that the compact city model as practiced by the two cities is justified by its ability to contribute to the environmental, economic, and social goals of sustainable development. However, the economic goals dominate over the environmental and social goals, notwithstanding the claim about the three dimensions of sustainability being equally important at the discursive level. Nevertheless, new planning measures are being implemented to address the relevant environmental and social issues towards balancing the three goals of sustainability and thus strengthening their influence over urban development practices.

  • Animated lands : Studies in Territoriology
  • 2020
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Animated Lands Andrea Mubi Brighenti and Mattias Kärrholm focus on territory as a living phenomenon—and territoriality as an active and constantly reshaping force. They explore the complexity of territorial production through a series of parallel investigations into fundamental territorial themes, such as rhythm, synchronization, melody, morphogenesis, and animism. The notion of territory is excavated through case studies including the analysis of urban playgrounds, homemaking, the transformations of urban walls, and the stabilization of peculiar building types such as the house-museum. These empirical examples span such cities as Ahmedabad, Amsterdam, London, and Rome. Animated Lands provides a broad introduction to what a theory of territories could be and how it could help to advance sociospatial studies.

  • Atmospheres of retail and the asceticism of civilized consumption
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Geographica Helvetica. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 0016-7312 .- 2194-8798. ; 73:3, s. 203-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During recent decades, consumption-oriented spaces of comfort and hospitality have proliferated - including, for instance, lounge shopping malls, food court plazas, spas, entertainment retail, visitor centres, and the development of ever larger pedestrian precincts. In this article we explore shopping malls as capitalist domes in Sloterdijk's sense. We observe atmospheric production, atmospheric management and atmospheric culture (which we propose to call atmoculture) inside such domes. Processes of retailization and mallification - whereby shopping malls and retail spaces absorb increasing economic and societal energies - can be regarded as correlative to the rise of an atmoculture of civilized consumption. Such atmoculture is visible for instance in stress-avoidance strategies and the production of a pleasurable experience in consumption-oriented public zones. The design of contemporary retail spaces seems to pivot around specific atmospheric strategies developed to promote and sustain civilized consumption. In this piece, we describe four different strategies of atmospheric production, identifying their possible shortcomings and failings. Finally, we advance the hypothesis that the atmospheric production of retail can also be analyzed with reference to Sloterdijk's theorization of asceticism as self-disciplination..

  • Beyond rhythmanalysis : Towards a territoriology of rhythms and melodies in everyday spatial activities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: City, Territory and Architecture. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2195-2701. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent, rich scholarship on rhythms, following in the wake of Lefebvre’s book Éléments de rythmanalyse (1992), proves that rhythmanalysis is an important sensitising notion and research technique. Despite its increasing recognition, however, rhythmanalysis has not yet become a proper science as its proponents had hoped. In this article, we argue that rhythmanalysis could benefit from being further developed and integrated into a wider science of territories. What research must attain is, we suggest, not simply a recording, description or analysis of rhythms; instead, the goal is to capture the life of rhythms as they enter territorial formations. A neo-vitalistic conception, in other words, could enrich the standard social-scientific understanding of the relation between rhythms and territories. More specifically, we submit that the notion of rhythm could be explored not only in terms of the recurrent patterns of association it defines, but also with essential reference to the intensive situations and moments it generates and, in the end, territorialises.

  • Domestic Territories and the Little Humans : Understanding the Animation of Domesticity
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Space and Culture. - : SAGE Publications. - 1206-3312 .- 1552-8308. ; 21:4, s. 395-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Domesticity is a complex, multifaceted phenomenon. In this piece, we approach it from the point of view of a general theory of territories. To do so, we attempt to tackle simultaneously the ecological and spiritual dimensions of home by attending the expressive dimension of domesticity. We emphasize that the expressiveness of home inherently includes the register of the familiar as well as that of the unfamiliar (Freud’s unheimlich). The constant negotiations between these two registers can be appreciated as carried out at the limits of control. To highlight this fact, we focus on the case of the “little humans,” miniature humanoid creatures well attested in traditional mythologies and folk tales across different civilizations. Drawing from anthropological and ethnographic literature, yet with a leading interest in social–spatial theorizing, we seek to untangle the relations between humans and the little humans—these “elusive others” living with us—in order to clarify the deep meanings ingrained in domestic territories.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Social Science Information. - : SAGE Publications. - 0539-0184 .- 1461-7412. ; 57:2, s. 249-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the issue of morphogenesis and metamorphosis in socio-spatial formations. The specific key is what we propose to call the ‘animistic moment’ in form-taking processes. We believe that a conceptualisation of animistic moments might help us to focus better not simply on the coming about of new forms, but also on the power forms are endowed with. The general social-theoretical horizon for the essay is an approach to social collectives as forms of territorialisation and territorial stabilisation. We suggest that an inquiry into the genesis and the transformation of forms through animistic moments might also be employed in the study of an array of processes of social territorialisation. In this article, we look in particular at two examples of the materialisation and animation of social-territorial boundaries: the first relates to the architectural construction of brick arches and walls, while the second relates to urban warfare and the demolition of urban walls.

  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Urban Design Research Methods. - 9780367768058 ; , s. 261-268
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we present why and how a territorial perspective on urban design and public space can be fruitful. We start by introducing the notion of territoriology, and then go on to present a brief history of how territoriality traditionally has been discussed in relation to urban design, ending with a few examples of some more recent territoriological studies. We then give a few examples of methods and techniques we have used in our own studies, before presenting four methodological themes that we think are important to keep in mind when taking a territoriological perspective on the urban design of public spaces.

  • Three presents : On the multi-temporality of territorial production and the gift from John Soane
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Time & Society. - 0961-463X. ; 28:1, s. 375-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Territoriality has primarily been seen as a spatial rather than temporal phenomenon. In this paper, we want to investigate how time functions in territorialising processes. In particular, we are attracted by the multi-temporality that is co-present in each process of territorialisation (i.e. processes in which time and space are used as means of measure, control and expression). The article is divided into two main parts. In the first part, we draw inspiration from Gilles Deleuze’s book Logic of Sense, as well as from authors such as Simmel, Whitehead, Benjamin and Jesi, in order to articulate three different types of the present (Aion, Kronos and Chronos). In the second part, we move to a short case study of the collector John Soane and the establishment of his house-museum. The case is used to exemplify how these three presents can be used to discuss and temporal aspects of territorialisation in general, and the production of a specific sort of territory – the house-museum as a new building type in particular.

  • Urban crystallization and the morphogenesis of urban territories
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Territory, Politics, Governance. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2162-2671 .- 2162-268X. ; 11:3, s. 502-518
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop the perspective of crystallization as a way to shed a light on the morphogenesis and stabilization of urban territories. We start by describing crystallization as a consolidation of a visible and singular order that establishes certain privileged directions of growth and breaks spatial and temporal symmetries. We then illuminate how crystallization processes unfold at different scales, going through a series of historical cases, from the stabilization of urban regions, to iconic places such as Times Square, New York, and on to large scale linear or path crystals, such the Turia Riverbed Park in Valencia. Building on thesecases, we then discuss crystallization as a phenomenon requiring metastability, and how this metastability relates to different ways and forms of territorial stabilization. Finally, we discuss how crystallization, by making certain figures and directions more salient than others, also plays an important part in the emergence of new scales and in the processes of urban rescaling, that is, how crystallization also contributes to a hierarchical segmentation of the urban environment.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Urban and Regional Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 0969-7764 .- 1461-7145. ; 24:1, s. 50-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While scholars agree on the reasons behind the current proliferation of urban, small-scale, pre-organised events, the implication of these events for public life is more controversial, and involves polarised debates between enthusiasts and critics. This paper develops an international comparison between one city district in Milan (Italy) and one in Lund (Sweden), in order to explore how the variety of events that took place there between 2013 and 2015 possibly affected the local and on-going everyday public life. In both cases, the observed events aimed to de-stigmatise the broader urban districts in which they were staged, as well as to enhance a vibrant urban life in relatively disadvantaged areas. In the study, we identify three different ways in which these events make the public character of everyday life visible, and even redefine patterns of urban civility. The main argument deriving from our comparative ethnography is that the salience of events in the everyday life that they supposedly disrupt can be analytically addressed by developing a pragmatist approach to public space, discussing it in terms of territorial complexity.

  • Catching glimpses : the fragment-anthology as a strategy for architectural research
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 74-81
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The weaving together of fragments under the heading of a “weak” theme has a long tradition in research. The strategy has, however, not been so popular after the 19th century, even though advocates of a more modern fragmentology can be found, e.g. in Walter Benjamin. For Benjamin, the artefacts truly showed themselves only when the context had disappeared or been forgotten. In this article we would argue that, for the investigations of marginal aspects within architecture, the research strategy of collecting fragments could be especially promising. They belong to the strategies of “weak thought” that, as Vattimo proposes, have the strength of the debilitated through the use of tangential and transversal sources instead of fostering the authoritative and the dominant. Starting with a critical analysis of classical anthologies through the notion of the “title”, we proceed to present a series of intellectuals that have developed alternative methods to do their own researches and explorations of reality with fragments. Afterwards, we study the possibilities and risks that fragments pose when doing research, as well as, developing an inventory of strategies for working with fragments. Ultimately, we formulate how fragments, brought together as “fragment-anthologies”, could be used as a specific research technique.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Applied Mobilities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2380-0135 .- 2380-0127. ; 3:2, s. 97-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we discuss the development of urbanized running culture by exploring how the embodied rhythms of running interact with other urban rhythms in a park. The analysis focuses on the timings, sensations and materialities produced through running, and how the rhythms of running intersect with the materialities and rhythms of others. The investigation draws on interviews, observations and a running diary undertaken at Pildammsparken in central Malmö. Our research shows that while the runner, in endeavouring to align with the rhythms of others, may becoming a more disciplined figure, running in the park is more concerned with practising a sharing of space than moving on auto-pilot. Consequently, running is largely a mobile rhythmic practice that negotiates and adapts to co-produce eurhythmic choreographies in this particular urban location.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past few decades, significant social and economic transformations had a relevant correspondence in processes of territorial complexification, urban fragmentation and spatial injustice. Literature and research shows that these processes have also a very important temporal dimension, associated to a transition from an industrial society of synchronized rhythms to more heterogeneous everyday experiences where more individualized time-space associations of a growing number of people are based on atypical agendas and working hours. This article, that is associated with the Urban-Net project Chronotope, profiting from its discussions and results, takes as central the relation between time policies, urban policies and planning, analyzing differences between Oporto/Portugal, Barcelona/Spain, Malmoe/Sweden and Toulouse/France.

  • Ingår i: Osteoporosis International. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0937-941X .- 1433-2965. ; 29:3, s. 741-749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aimed to study the risk of hip fracture and risk of hip arthroplasty among farmers in Sweden. Our results indicate that farming, representing an occupation with high physical activity, in men is associated with a lower risk of hip fracture but an increased risk of hip arthroplasty. Introduction The risks of hip fracture and hip arthroplasty are influenced by factors including socioeconomic status, education, urbanization, latitude of residence, and physical activity. Farming is an occupation encompassing rural living and high level of physical activity. Therefore, we aimed to study the risk of hip fracture and risk of hip arthroplasty among farmers in Sweden. Methods We studied the risk of hip fracture, and hip arthroplasty due to primary osteoarthritis, in all men and women aged 35 years or more in Sweden between 1987 and 2002. Documented occupations were available in 3.5 million individuals, of whom 97,136 were farmers. The effects of age, sex, income, education, location of residence, and occupation on risk of hip fracture or hip arthroplasty were examined using a modification of Poisson regression. Results A total of 4027 farmers and 93,109 individuals with other occupations sustained a hip fracture, while 5349 farmers and 63,473 others underwent a hip arthroplasty. Risk of hip fracture was higher with greater age, lower income, lower education, higher latitude, and urban area for all men and women. Compared to all other occupations, male farmers had a 20% lower age-adjusted risk of hip fracture (hazard ratio (HR) 0.80, 95% CI 0.77-0.84), an effect that was not seen in female farmers (HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.91-1.01). Both male and female farmers had a higher age-adjusted risk for hip arthroplasty. Conclusions Our results indicate that farming, representing an occupation with high physical activity, in men is associated with a lower risk of hip fracture but an increased risk of hip arthroplasty.

  • Percieved Urban Design Qualities and Affective Experience of Walking
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Urban Design. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1357-4809 .- 1469-9664. ; 21:2, s. 256-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates associations between perceived micro-level urban design qualities, the affective experience of walking, and intention to walk specific routes in the neighbourhood. A total of 106 residents assessed on-site three routes planned for walking in semi-central neighbourhoods. In the prediction of the residents’ intention to choose to walk and intention to avoid walking the route, perceived urban design qualities were mediated by the affective experience of valence of the walk. The perceived complexity and aesthetic quality, upkeep and order, and the presence of well-maintained greenery, were identified as important. These perceived urban design qualities and affective experiences varied between the three routes, but also within the routes. It is proposed that understanding of site-specific affective experience of walking environments could serve as guidance for urban design practices.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: CIST, 2e colloque international Fronts et frontières des sciences du territoire. ; , s. 245-250
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, we have seen the development of a more relational approach to territoriality. This perspective, which focuses on events rather than space, also opens up for an elaboration of temporal aspects of territorial production. In this study, I investigate the central urban square, Stortorget, in Malmö, Sweden, in order to develop a discussion of urban time-space territorology. In 1978, Korosec-Serfaty performed a thorough study of the square, observing its everyday activities. The present study compares territorial productions at Malmö’s Main Square during the 1970s to those of today. The results of the study indicate a change of time-space production in which temporary territorial appropriations and tactics tend to become shorter in duration, whereas the number of temporary and large-scale territorial strategies has increased and the role of these become more important. It also suggests the need to approach the use of public space as a relational and interdependent system rather than as the generic bilateral relations of materialities and social activities.

  • Arkitekturens territorialitet : till en diskussion om territoriell makt och gestaltning i stadens offentliga rum
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The point of departure of this dissertation is a consideration of the problems in the field of architecture, of conceptualizing and addressing aspects of the complex relationship between architectural form and use. The aim of the thesis is to create conditions for a discussion on architectural design and territorial power relations within the context of everyday life, and more specifically to investigate what role architectural design plays in these territorial power relations. The empirical framework of the discussion is set by public urban spaces, and the discussion is structured as four subordinated investigations into territoriality, dealing successively with concepts, power, architectural design and public space. I investigate the use and meanings of the concept of territoriality, suggesting a definition of territoriality as a spatially delimited and effective means of control, identifiable on the basis of the everyday life of a place. I develop four different kinds of territorial productions: territorial strategy, territorial tactics, territorial appropriation and territorial association. Applying the theories of Michel Foucault and Bruno Latour, I develop a genealogical and material perspective on power, primarily using actor-network theory as a way of addressing territorial power. As supplements to the concept of network stabilization, I develop two more forms of territorial stabilization – territorial body and territorial sort – in order to deal with the territorial role of architecture. I then utilize my discussion of territorial power and production in descriptions of architecture and urban places. I investigate and conceptualize the role of architectural design in territorial strategies of the 19th century. I also make an empirical investigation of three urban squares, discussing places of intermingling and superimposed territorial productions, ending up with suggestions for a discussion of public space in terms of territorial complexity. Territorial research has elaborated on the privatisation of space as well as on social or psychological aspects. In this thesis I provide possibilities for a materially more elaborated discussion of co-existing territorial productions beyond dichotomies, such as subject/object, public/private, and inclusion/exclusion. The discussion will hopefully be of importance in the building of new conceptual understandings of contemporary urban life and landscapes.

  • 2002

  • Building type production and everyday life: rethinking building types through actor-network theory and object-oriented philosophy
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Environment & Planning. D, Society and Space. - : SAGE Publications. - 1472-3433 .- 0263-7758. ; 31:6, s. 1109-1124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to reconceptualise ‘building type’ in order to better account for its general role in society and everyday life. The paper merges the concept of building type with actor-network theory and object-oriented philosophy in order to develop the concept of ‘territorial sorts’ as a way of widening building-type research and making it more useful for investigating how building types are actually produced, not just in terms of the work done by different kinds of authorities, such as architects, engineers, and building regulators, but also in terms of the ongoing practices and power relations of everyday life.

    • In the wake of global crises concerning, for example, inequalities, migration, pandemics, and the environment, ethical concerns have come to the fore. In this thematic issue, we are especially interested in the role that the planning, design, and materialities of the built environment can take in relation to ethics, and we present four different openings or themes into urban ethics that we also think are worthy of further interrogation. First of all, we suggest that new ethics evolve around new materialities, i.e., urban development and new design solutions are always accompanied by new ethical issues that we need to tackle. Secondly, we highlight different aspects involved in the design and ethics of community building. Thirdly, we address the issue of sustainable planning by pointing to some its shortcomings, and especially the need to addressing ethical concerns in a more coherent way. Finally, we point to the need to further investigate communication, translation, and influence in participatory design processes. Taken together, we hope that this issue—by highlighting these themes in a series of different articles—can inspire further studies into the much needed field of investigation that is urban ethics.

  • Commemoration and the recategorization of public space : Typological transformations in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this piece, I investigate how material strategies of commemoration takes part in the recategorization of public space. I look especially at how commemorative vehicles such as toponymic signs, public art and architectural design, play a role in the territorialisation of a specific public place by establishing associations to a new spatial type. This can, for example, include the transformation of a public square into a 'memorial square' (Rabin Square), a religious space into a 'space of national significance' (Western Wall Plaza) or a village into a 'archaeological excavation' and a 'tourist theme park' (City of David). Looking at a series of places in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, I investigate the different ways in which memory has been materialised/embodied and subsequently taken part in changing the territorial complexity and publicness of these places. In the end, I conceptualise a few material strategies traced from the cases, discussing how these strategies might to take part in a process of crystallisation, both affecting public life and setting firm directions and rhythms for the future design and life at the places where they have been implemented.

  • Escalating Consumption and Spatial Planning : Notes on the Evolution of Swedish Retail Spaces
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 19:6, s. 1043-1059
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to describe and investigate how the Swedish escalation in consumption and restructuring of retail spaces are dealt with in Swedish spatial planning. In the first part of this article, we present a history and an overview of the Swedish retail evolution. The major changes are presented, followed by a short discussion of some main actors in this evolution. In the second part of this article, we focus on policies and the planning process, discussing how the municipalities are expected to fulfil their tasks as the agents responsible for physical planning of commercial centres in the light of the ongoing rapid escalation of retail planning projects. Recent guidelines from the national and regional authorities for improvement of the current situation are analysed. Finally, we discuss recent research maintaining that a new form for project planning is emerging within commercial planning. This new form sometimes bypasses traditional planning practices and thus requires new instruments and organizations for a more effective planning of urban retail.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Space Syntax. - 2044-7507. ; 7:1, s. 55-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to contribute to an actantial approach to building type studies through a study of the visitor centre and its role in contemporary spatial production. The article takes its empirical departure in the (from a Swedish perspective) intense urbanization of the Scania region, in the southern part of Sweden. Looking at building types in terms of actants implies that different sets of buildings can be abstracted in different ways (and not just in terms of form or function) depending on the effect they have in a certain situation. The proliferation of visitor centers in Scania is by no means an innocent development, these centers have a part to play (an actant role) in the urbanization process of the region. In this article I discuss this role as a kind threshold actant or type, which I further divide into four different subcategories in order to show connections with other sorts of spaces in the urban landscape. The discussion is then used both to highlight the role of visitor centers in recent processes of urbanization, and to argue for a more open-ended, relational and pragmatic approach to building types studies

  • Interobjectivity in architectural research and theory : towards a meta-theory of materiality and the effects of architecture and everyday life
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Architecture. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1360-2365 .- 1466-4410. ; 19:1, s. 64-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to introduce a meta-theoretical discussion in architectural research about materiality and its effect on everyday life and use. Taking a relational perspective, I distinguish between three different perspectives on materialities as described in theories in recent decades. From these perspectives I develop three possible conceptualisations of interobjectivity. The first perspective sees interobjectivity as collaboratively constructed ‘cross-road effects’. The second perspective sees interobjectivity as the process of stitching together material heterogeneities. The third perspective sees interobjectivity as the radiance of a persistent identity through different contexts. These three perspectives each contribute to the ways architectural objects and spaces interact and produce effects. These effects are often discussed within separate paradigms. Putting them together as different modalisations of interobjectivity enables a much richer empirical analysis, where the notion of ‘material effects’ can be differentiated and compared.

  • Interseriality and Different Sorts of Walking: Suggestions for a Relational Approach to Urban Walking
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Mobilities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-0101 .- 1745-011X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we attempt to develop a meta-language for a relational approach to urban walking that is able to account for walking as a mutable, embodied, materially heterogeneous and distributed activity. Following the perspective on walking as developed in a series of articles by Jennie Middleton, we develop a notion of the walker as a socio-technical assemblage. By recognising walking as an ongoing relation of different series of walking assemblages or ‘sorts of walking’, it becomes possible to study the mediation of these series through the focus on objects of passage: things or triggers that transform one walking assemblage into another via the process of appraisal. We suggest interseriality as a concept capable of handling a ‘relation of relations’; i.e. how different sorts of walking relate to one another and how the ongoing transformation of a walking assemblage ultimately also produces a mutable but sustaining walking person. Finally, we suggest a focus on boundary objects. Since walking assemblages cannot help but to transform in order to sustain, walks always include a series of different sorts of walking: the possible co-presence of different sorts of walking thus depends on boundary objects.
