  • The upgraded DO detector
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 565:2, s. 463-537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The DO experiment enjoyed a very successful data-collection run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1996. Since then, the detector has been upgraded to take advantage of improvements to the Tevatron and to enhance its physics capabilities. We describe the new elements of the detector, including the silicon microstrip tracker, central fiber tracker, solenoidal magnet, preshower detectors, forward muon detector, and forward proton detector. The uranium/liquid -argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run 1, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated electronics, triggering, and data acquisition systems, along with the design and implementation of software specific to DO.

  • Basic instrumentation for Hall A at Jefferson Lab
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 522:3, s. 294-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Outcomes of patients with systemic sclerosis treated with rituximab in contemporary practice: a prospective cohort study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Annals of the rheumatic diseases. - : BMJ. - 1468-2060 .- 0003-4967. ; 78:7, s. 979-987
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To assess the safety and efficacy of rituximab in systemic sclerosis (SSc) in clinical practice.MethodsWe performed a prospective study including patients with SSc from the European Scleroderma Trials and Research (EUSTAR) network treated with rituximab and matched with untreated patients with SSc. The main outcomes measures were adverse events, skin fibrosis improvement, lung fibrosis worsening and steroids use among propensity score-matched patients treated or not with rituximab.Results254 patients were treated with rituximab, in 58% for lung and in 32% for skin involvement. After a median follow-up of 2 years, about 70% of the patients had no side effect. Comparison of treated patients with 9575 propensity-score matched patients showed that patients treated with rituximab were more likely to have skin fibrosis improvement (22.7 vs 14.03 events per 100 person-years; OR: 2.79 [1.47–5.32]; p=0.002). Treated patients did not have significantly different rates of decrease in forced vital capacity (FVC)>10% (OR: 1.03 [0.55–1.94]; p=0.93) nor in carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) decrease. Patients having received rituximab were more prone to stop or decrease steroids (OR: 2.34 [1.56–3.53], p<0.0001). Patients treated concomitantly with mycophenolate mofetil had a trend for better outcomes as compared with patients receiving rituximab alone (delta FVC: 5.22 [0.83–9.62]; p=0.019 as compared with controls vs 3 [0.66–5.35]; p=0.012).ConclusionRituximab use was associated with a good safety profile in this large SSc-cohort. Significant change was observed on skin fibrosis, but not on lung. However, the limitation is the observational design. The potential stabilisation of lung fibrosis by rituximab has to be addressed by a randomised trial.

  • Ingår i: Il Nuovo Cimento. - : Società Italiana di Fisica. - 2037-4909. ; 45:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The HISPEC-DESPEC collaboration aims at investigating the structure of exotic nuclei formed in fragmentation reactions with decay spectroscopy measurements, as part of the FAIR Phase-0 campaign at GSI. This paper reports on first results of an experiment performed in spring 2021, with a focus on beta-decaystudies in the Po-Fr nuclei in the 220 < A <230 island of octupole deformation exploiting the DESPEC setup. Ion-beta correlations and fast-timing techniques are being employed, giving an insight into this difficult-to-reach region.

    • Our understanding of the evolution of the shell structure in nuclei far from stability is based on the study of some key nuclei. Nuclei at or next to double shell closures play a special role in this. Presently, a lot of discussion is concentrated on the neutron-rich calcium isotopes, which provide a rich testing ground for various nuclear models with several traditional and new magic numbers. 60 Ca is now almost within reach with the most advanced radioactive beam facilities. In order to investigate the evolution of the shell gap at N = 40, the configuration of states in the odd–even titanium isotopes up to N = 37 ( 59 Ti) have been studied. In order to experimentally access the shell gap at N = 40, it is nowadays within the reach of the most advanced facility the investigation of neutron hole configuration states in odd–even titanium isotopes up to N = 37, in the 59 Ti nucleus. Such states correspond to relatively simple configurations that constitute a challenging testing ground for effective nuclear interactions. The new data obtained in our experiment allows to place the present predictions concerning the shell closure at N = 40 in the calcium region on a more solid ground.

  • First spectroscopy of Ti-61 and the transition to the Island of Inversion at N=40
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 792, s. 16-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Isomeric states in Ti-59,Ti-61 have been populated in the projectile fragmentation of a 345 AMeV( 238)U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The decay lifetimes and delayed gamma-ray transitions were measured with the EURICA array. Besides the known isomeric state in Ti-59, two isomeric states in Ti-61 are observed for the first time. Based on the measured lifetimes, transition multipolarities as well as tentative spins and parities are assigned. Large-scale shell model calculations based on the modified LNPS interaction show that both Ti-59 and Ti-61 belong to the Island of Inversion at N = 40 with ground state configurations dominated by particle-hole excitations to the g(9/2 )and d(5/2) orbits.

  • Isomeric states in neutron-rich nuclei near N=40
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 104:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-rich nuclei in the vicinity of the N = 40 island of inversion are characterized by shell evolution and exhibit deformed ground states. In several nuclei isomeric states have been observed and attributed to excitations to the intruder neutron 1g(9/2) orbital. In the present paper we searched for isomeric states in nuclei around N = 40, Z = 22 produced by projectile fragmentation at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Delayed. rays were detected by the Euroball RIKEN Cluster Array germanium detector array gamma High statistics data allowed for an updated decay scheme of V-60. The lifetime of an isomeric state in V-64 was measured for the first time in the present experiment. A previously unobserved isomeric state was discovered in Sc-58. The measured lifetime suggests a parity changing transition, originating from an odd number of neutrons in the 1g(9/2) orbital. The nature of the isomeric state in Sc-58 is, thus, different from isomers in the less exotic V and Sc nuclei.

  • The International Consensus Classification of Mature Lymphoid Neoplasms: a report from the Clinical Advisory Committee
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 140:11, s. 1229-1253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the publication of the Revised European-American Classification of Lymphoid Neoplasms in 1994, subsequent updates of the classification of lymphoid neoplasms have been generated through iterative international efforts to achieve broad consensus among hematopathologists, geneticists, molecular scientists, and clinicians. Significant progress has recently been made in the characterization of malignancies of the immune system, with many new insights provided by genomic studies. They have led to this proposal. We have followed the same process that was successfully used for the third and fourth editions of the World Health Organization Classification of Hematologic Neoplasms. The definition, recommended studies, and criteria for the diagnosis of many entities have been extensively refined. Some categories considered provisional have now been upgraded to definite entities. Terminology for some diseases has been revised to adapt nomenclature to the current knowledge of their biology, but these modifications have been restricted to well-justified situations. Major findings from recent genomic studies have impacted the conceptual framework and diagnostic criteria for many disease entities. These changes will have an impact on optimal clinical management. The conclusions of this work are summarized in this report as the proposed International Consensus Classification of mature lymphoid, histiocytic, and dendritic cell tumors.

  • Practical global optimization for multiview geometry
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science. - 1611-3349. ; 3951:Pt 1: Proceedings, s. 592-605
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a practical method for finding the provably globally optimal solution to numerous problems in projective geometry including multiview triangulation, camera resectioning and hemography estimation. Unlike traditional methods which may get trapped in local minima due to the non-convex nature of these problems, this approach provides a theoretical guarantee of global optimality. The formulation relies on recent developments in fractional programming and the theory of convex underestimators and allows a unified framework for minimizing the standard L-2-norm of reprojection errors which is optimal under Gaussian noise as well as the more robust L-1-norm which is less sensitive to outliers. The efficacy of our algorithm is empirically demonstrated by good performance on experiments for both synthetic and real data. An open source MATLAB toolbox that implements the algorithm is also made available to facilitate further research.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Micrometer thick Bi-3 Fe-5 O-1.2 (BIG)(001) films were grown onto Gd-3(ScGa)(5)O-12(001) single crystals by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The films are of epitaxial quality with a lattice constant of 1.263 nm. Narrow x-ray rocking curves (full width at half maximum: 0.06 deg) and narrow ferromagnetic resonance lines (widths of 25 Oe) indicate good crystalline quality and magnetic performance. The films possess in-plane magnetization, Faraday rotation as high as -7.8 deg/mum at 630 nm wavelength, and the magnetization M-H curves are linear in the field range from -1.6 kOe to +1.6 kOe. The magneto-optical (MO) properties are almost temperature independent between 5 K and 200 K. This enables the use of thin BIG films as visualizers of magnetic fluxes in high-T-c superconductors. Magnetic fluxes have been visualized in YBa2Cu3O7-infinity, (YBCO) ceramics with an artificial grain boundary. The sensitivity expressed as Faraday rotation angle (per film thickness) per magnetic field unit was found to be 4.9 deg/(kOe . mum) in a 730 nm thick BIG film.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 91:12, s. 9556-9560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bi3Fe5O12 films were deposited onto single crystal Gd3Ga5O12(111) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction patterns and cross sectional transmission electron micrographs show epitaxial film growth and a flat interface between the film and substrate. However, there are small inclusions at the interface and a network of cracks is observed by optical microscope. The refractive index is 3.4 at 800 nm wavelength. The optical transmission is low below 540 nm but increases to 90% for a 1.8 mum thick film at 850 nm. The magneto-optical Faraday rotation is high, with a peak value of -24 deg/mum at 560 nm. The angle of Faraday ellipticity reaches a maximum value of 15 deg/mum at 545 nm.

    • Bi3Fe5O12 (BIG) magneto-optic (MO) films have been grown onto (111) and (100) gadolinium gallium garnet substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). X-ray and transmission electron microscopy measurements have confirmed the epitaxial growth of the BIG films oil both substrate orientations, Faraday rotation angles of both films showed linear field dependence from - 1600 to + 1600 G and the saturated Faraday rotation angle values were similar to5 deg/ pm and similar to7.8 deg/mum for the (111) and (100) oriented films, respectively. A change in the MO contrast of both films in applied magnetic field has been observed and magnetic nux distributions have been visualised in YBa2Cu3O- , (YBCO) bulk superconductor using the (001) oriented BIG film.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Transplantation and cellular therapy. - : Elsevier BV. - 2666-6367. ; 27:9, s. 720-728
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autologous (auto-) and allogeneic (allo-) hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) are accepted treatment modalities in contemporary treatment algorithms for mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy recently received approval for MCL; however, its exact place and sequence in relation to HCT remain unclear. The American Society of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, Center of International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research, and the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation jointly convened an expert panel to formulate consensus recommendations for role, timing, and sequencing of auto-HCT, allo-HCT, and CAR T cell therapy for patients with newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory (R/R) MCL. The RAND-modified Delphi method was used to generate consensus statements. Seventeen consensus statements were generated, with a few key statements as follows: in the first line setting, auto-HCT consolidation represents standard of care in eligible patients, whereas there is no clear role of allo-HCT or CAR T cell therapy outside of clinical trials. In the R/R setting, the preferential option is CAR T cell therapy, especially in patients with MCL failing or intolerant to at least one Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor, while allo-HCT is recommended if CAR T cell therapy fails or is infeasible. Several recommendations were based on expert opinion, where the panel developed consensus statements for important real-world clinical scenarios to guide clinical practice. In the absence of contemporary evidence-based data, the panel found RAND-modified Delphi methodology effective in providing a formal framework for developing consensus recommendations for the timing and sequence of cellular therapies for MCL.

  • Conditional Random Fields Meet Deep Neural Networks for Semantic Segmentation: Combining Probabilistic Graphical Models with Deep Learning for Structured Prediction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. - 1558-0792 .- 1053-5888. ; 35:1, s. 37-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Semantic segmentation is the task of labeling every pixel in an image with a predefined object category. It has numerous applications in scenarios where the detailed understanding of an image is required, such as in autonomous vehicles and medical diagnosis. This problem has traditionally been solved with probabilistic models known as conditional random fields (CRFs) due to their ability to model the relationships between the pixels being predicted. However, deep neural networks (DNNs) recently have been shown to excel at a wide range of computer vision problems due to their ability to automatically learn rich feature representations from data, as opposed to traditional handcrafted features. The idea of combining CRFs and DNNs have achieved state-of-the-art results in a number of domains. We review the literature on combining the modeling power of CRFs with the representation-learning ability of DNNs, ranging from early work that combines these two techniques as independent stages of a common pipeline to recent approaches that embed inference of probabilistic models directly in the neural network itself. Finally, we summarize future research directions.

  • To test or not to test? Laboratory support for the diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis: a position paper of ESGBOR, the ESCMID study group for Lyme borreliosis
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Clinical Microbiology and Infection. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 1198-743X .- 1469-0691. ; 24:2, s. 118-124
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a tick-borne infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. The most frequent clinical manifestations are erythema migrans and Lyme neuroborreliosis. Currently, a large volume of diagnostic testing for LB is reported, whereas the incidence of clinically relevant disease manifestations is low. This indicates overuse of diagnostic testing for LB with implications for patient care and cost-effective health management. Aim: The recommendations provided in this review are intended to support both the clinical diagnosis and initiatives for a more rational use of laboratory testing in patients with clinically suspected LB. Sources: This is a narrative review combining various aspects of the clinical and laboratory diagnosis with an educational purpose. The literature search was based on existing systematic reviews, national and international guidelines and supplemented with specific citations. Implications: The main recommendations according to current European case definitions for LB are as follows. Typical erythema migrans should be diagnosed clinically and does not require laboratory testing. The diagnosis of Lyme neuroborreliosis requires laboratory investigation of the spinal fluid including intrathecal antibody production, and the remaining disease manifestations require testing for serum antibodies to B. burgdorferi. Testing individuals with non-specific subjective symptoms is not recommended, because of a low positive predictive value. (C) 2017 European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. • Identification of commensal bacterial strains that modulate Yersinia enterocolitica and dextran sodium sulfate-induced inflammatory responses : implications for the development of probiotics.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. - 0019-9567 .- 1098-5522. ; 75:7, s. 3490-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An increasing body of evidence suggests that probiotic bacteria are effective in the treatment of enteric infections, although the molecular basis of this activity remains elusive. To identify putative probiotics, we tested commensal bacteria in terms of their toxicity, invasiveness, inhibition of Yersinia-induced inflammation in vitro and in vivo, and modulation of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. The commensal bacteria Escherichia coli, Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Bacteroides vulgatus, Bacteroides distasonis, and Streptococcus salivarius were screened for adhesion to, invasion of, and toxicity for host epithelial cells (EC), and the strains were tested for their ability to inhibit Y. enterocolitica-induced NF-kappaB activation. Additionally, B. adolescentis was administered to mice orally infected with Y. enterocolitica and to mice with mucosae impaired by DSS treatment. None of the commensal bacteria tested was toxic for or invaded the EC. B. adolescentis, B. distasonis, B. vulgatus, and S. salivarius inhibited the Y. enterocolitica-induced NF-kappaB activation and interleukin-8 production in EC. In line with these findings, B. adolescentis-fed mice had significantly lower results for mean pathogen burden in the visceral organs, intestinal tumor necrosis factor alpha mRNA expression, and loss of body weight upon oral infection with Y. enterocolitica. In addition, the administration of B. adolescentis decelerated inflammation upon DSS treatment in mice. We suggest that our approach might help to identify new probiotics to be used for the treatment of inflammatory and infectious gastrointestinal disorders.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aimed to evaluate the pharmacodynamics, efficacy, safety and tolerability of the JAK1 inhibitor GSK2586184 in adults with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In this adaptive, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, patients received oral GSK2586184 50–400 mg, or placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. Primary endpoints included interferon-mediated messenger RNA transcription over time, changes in Safety of Estrogen in Lupus National Assessment-SLE Disease Activity Index score, and number/severity of adverse events. A pre-specified interim analysis was performed when ≥ 5 patients per group completed 2 weeks of treatment. In total, 84–92% of patients were high baseline expressors of the interferon transcriptional biomarkers evaluated. At interim analysis, GSK2586184 showed no significant effect on mean interferon transcriptional biomarker expression (all panels). The study was declared futile and recruitment was halted at 50 patients. Shortly thereafter, significant safety data were identified, including elevated liver enzymes in six patients (one confirmed and one suspected case of Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms), leading to immediate dosing cessation. Safety of Estrogen in Lupus National Assessment-SLE Disease Activity Index scores were not analysed due to the small number of patients completing the study. The study futility and safety data described for GSK2586184 do not support further evaluation in patients with SLE. Study identifiers: GSK Study JAK115919; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01777256.

  • Composite Aluminum-Copper Sheet Material by Friction Stir Welding and Cold Rolling
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials engineering and performance (Print). - : ASM International. - 1059-9495 .- 1544-1024. ; 22:8, s. 2176-2184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An aluminum alloy and a pure copper material were butt-joined by friction stir welding and subsequently cold rolled. The cold-rolling operation proved to be very advantageous because small voids present after friction stir welding were closed, the interface area per material thickness was enlarged, a thin intermetallic layer was partitioned, and the joint was strengthened by strain hardening. Tensile test specimens fractured in the heat-affected zone in the aluminum material; tensile strengths of the joints exceeded the tensile strengths of the base materials and were as high as 335 MPa. During soft annealing of the composite material, a 6-8-μm-thick intermetallic layer was grown at the interface. Nevertheless, tensile fracture still occurred in the heat-affected zone of the aluminum material. Electrical resistivity of the joint was smaller than resistivity of the aluminum material. Production of such composite material would result in coiled sheet material that could be subjected to further treatments such as electroplating and forming operations in an efficient and economically viable manner. The new composite material is promising for emerging automotive and industrial electrical applications.

    • We suggest to modify the usual iron garnet sensor film for magneto-optical imaging by introducing a Bragg mirror consisting of heteroepitaxial garnet layers between the substrate and sensor film. For the example situation of a hexagonal vortex lattice in a type II superconductor, we show by calculation that the quality factors of image contrast and optical efficiency can be higher for the proposed heteroepitaxial garnet multilayers than for the single-layer garnet films currently in use as sensor films.

  • Magneto-optical rotation of a one-dimensional all-garnet photonic crystal in transmission and reflection

    • We present spectra of transmittance, reflectance, and Faraday rotation of transmitted and reflected light for a periodic garnet multilayer structure with a central defect layer. The multilayer consists of alternating layers of bismuth and yttrium iron garnet, is 1.5 mu m thick, and was prepared by pulsed laser deposition. For the reflection measurements, a silver mirror was evaporated on top of the multilayer. Faraday rotation is strongly enhanced at resonances in transmission and reflection. The peak value obtained at 748 nm in transmission is 5.3 degrees and at 733 nm in reflection is 18 degrees. A single layer BIG film of equivalent thickness shows 2.2 degrees Faraday rotation at 748 nm. We find rather good agreement between measured and calculated spectra. Using calculations of the distributions of light intensities at different wavelengths inside the multilayer, we are able to give consistent qualitative explanations for the enhancement of Faraday rotation. We also find numerically that-at moderate strengths of the optical resonances-a linear relation exists between Faraday rotation and the intensity integrated over all magneto-optically active layers, if absorption is neglected.
