  • Specificities vs Enthusiasm: Nine European Case Studies of Commercialization of Innovation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of ICICKM 2008. ; , s. 71-78
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the critical factors behind commercialization of new product development (NPD) are investigated in order to add to our understanding of what drives and hampers the commercialization of new products and services. With the illustration of nine cases of commercialization from three multinational organizations, an initial framework of three categories of factors related to the success of commercializing innovation was the starting point (cognitive-, process- and managerial factors). Through a combination of inductive and deductive methods, the findings of the multi-case study support the factors and categorization from the preliminary framework, however additional findings emerged. The findings include a need to understand specificity (ability) and enthusiasm (will). Six dimensions of specificity were identified which affects the success of commercializing a new product or service. Firstly, the degree of differentiation (the more customized the product is, the more difficult to market in terms of volume). Next, we have the geographical scope (the more local scope, the less volume can be expected). Thirdly, there are legal and economic variation (possible differences in legislation setting boundaries on the potential markets). Fouthly, the number of potential customers for the given product (a higher level of customization results in fewer potential customers). The fifth dimension is the number of interfaces with the customer (more contacts leading to a lower degree of specificity). The final dimension is the flexibility of capabilities (less flexible personnel and machinery led to a higher degree of specificity). Whilst specificity makes up the essence in the findings, the role of enthusiasm is not to be neglected. Often, but not always, enthusiasm has a positive impact on the commercialization of new products (hence it is important to balancing specificity and enthusiasm). It is a cognitive challenge for the firm to be clear about the level of specificities. There is additional risk to be added to the commercialization process if this is not clearly communicated.

  • THE SUCCESS AND FAILURE OF NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Företagsekonomisk Föreningss konferens i Bergen, Norge, 9 - 11 augusti, 2007. ; , s. 24-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACTWhat factors affects New Product Development (NPD) and are the factors the same in different industries? These are two of the main questions explored when three organizations in different industries are studied from the perspectives of knowledge, motivation and organizational context. Focus is on the early phases of NPD, however the entire NPD process is included to better understand the results of the actions and factors throughout the process. The indications that knowledge and knowledge management are key tools in order to stay competitive in the market place are looked closer at and the empirical cases illustrate the use of knowledge within the given sub-cases and the implications thereof.

  • Organisasjonsteori
  • 2014

  • Organizing Technologies
  • 2011
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Organization theory and management studies tend to underrate the importance of technological resources in accomplishing organized activities. In organizations, a wide variety of technologies are mobilized on a day-to-day basis to accomplish organized activities. Some of these technologies are subject to continuous discussions and controversies while others are taken for granted or simply ignored. Organizing Technologies presents theories about technology and its recursive ability to both shape its users and to be shaped by its very use, outlining an analytical model where technologies serve three broad functions within organizations: to produce goods and services, to enhance administrative work, and to connect and co-align organizations within networks, supply chains, or distribution systems.

  • Organizing Technologies
  • 2011
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Organization theory and management studies tend to underrate the importance of material and technological resources in accomplishing organized activities. Given the pervasive influence of technology in everyday life in organizations, surprisingly little attention is paid to the entanglement of technologies and practices of organizing. In organizations, a wide variety of technologies, ranging from more conspicuous technologies such as computers and industrial robots to more infrastructural tools such as laboratory animals and accounting systems, are mobilized on a day-to-day basis to accomplish organized activities. Some of these technologies are subject to continuous discussions and controversies while others remain taken for granted or simply ignored. In the final chapter, a number of images of technology are discussed, helping students of the technologies of organizing to comprehend the materiality and permeability of technologies as well as their role in organizations

  • DIII-D research advancing the physics basis for optimizing the tokamak approach to fusion energy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limits and regulate β N in the ITER baseline scenario, based on plasma response to probing 3D fields, was demonstrated. Finally, innovative tokamak operation using a negative triangularity shape showed many attractive features for future pilot plant operation.

  • A Framework for the Strategic Management of Information Technology
  • 2006
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Strategy and IT research has been extensively discussed during the past 40 years. Two scientific disciplines Management Science (MS) and Management Information Science (MIS) investigate the importance of IT as a competitive factor. However, although much research is available in both disciplines, it is still difficult to explain how to manage IT to enable competitive advantages. One reason is that MS research focuses on strategies and competitive environments but avoids the analysis of IT. Another reason is that MIS research focuses on IT as a competitive factor but avoids the analysis of the competitive environment. Consequently, there is a gap of knowledge in the understanding of the strategic management of information technology (SMIT).The strategic analysis of IT as a competitive factor is important for achieving the competitive advantages of IT. This thesis explores factors related to strategy and IT that should be considered for the strategic analysis of IT as a competitive factor, and proposes a framework for SMIT. The research is conducted by means of a qualitative analysis of theoretical data from the disciplines of MS and MIS. Data is explored to find factors related to SMIT.The results of the analysis show that the strategic management of information technology is a continuous process of evaluation, change, and alignment between factors such as competitive environment, competitive strategies (business and IT strategies), competitive outcome, and competitive factors (IT). Therefore, the understanding of the relationships between these factors is essential in order to achieve the competitive advantages of using IT.This thesis contributes to strategic management research by clarifying the relationships between strategic management, competitive environment, and IT as competitive factor into a holistic framework for strategic analysis. The framework proposed is valuable not only for business managers and for IT managers, but also for academics. The framework is designed to understand the relationship between competitive elements during the process of strategic analysis prior to the formulation of competitive strategies. Moreover, it can also be used as a communication tool between managers, in order to achieve alignment among company strategies. To academics, this thesis presents the state-of-the-art related to strategic management research; it can also be a valuable reference for strategic managers, as well as researchers interested in the strategic management of IT.

  • Business Models and Strategy
  • 2019
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • What makes a business model successful? In this book the roots of business models are traced to the concept of the “business idea” which was popularized by researchers in the 1960s and 1970s. The business idea stresses the importance of conformance between the market and the product system, as well as between the product system and the internal features of the firm.A distinguishing feature of the book is how it links elements of business models to key concepts in strategic management research and practice, such as the customer offering, activity systems and strategic resources. It also uses theory and research to explore ways in which the contextual element of business models may be understood and acted upon. One chapter explores the common denominators of good strategies. For example, it is argued that good strategies enable realization of objectives, express choices, and build on strengths.Business Models and Strategy is intended as a “companion in the field” for reflective practitioners and as an integrative text for postgraduate students with a good grasp of strategy.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Towards the Knowledge Society eCommerce, eBusiness and eGovernment. Second IFIP Conference on E-Commerce, E-Business, E-Government (13E 2002). - 1402072392 ; 105, s. 259-270
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The business model concept is becoming increasingly popular within e-businesses and e-business research. However, the concept is often used relatively independently from theory, meaning model components and their interrelations are relatively obscure. This paper analysis three e-business models taxonomies based on a generic business model, which include customers and competitors, the offering, activities and organisation, resources and factor market interactions. The longitudinal processes and actions by which business models evolve are also included. The result of the analysis shows that most of the e-business models only addresses customers and the offering. Other important aspects of any business, e.g. activates and resource, are not addressed. In sum, e-business models, as they appear, in literature are formal descriptions of how businesses can use the Internet to leverage their offering, without any casual relationships between components, e.g. that the offering requires some activities to be performed by the organisation in order to deliver a offering to a market

  • The business model concept: theoretical underpinnings and empirical illustrations
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Information Systems. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0960-085X .- 1476-9344. ; 12:1, s. 49-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The business model concept is becoming increasingly popular within IS, management and strategy literature. It is used within many fields of research, including both traditional strategy theory and in the emergent body of literature on e-business. However, the concept is often used independently from theory, meaning model components and their interrelations are relatively obscure. Nonetheless, we believe that the business model concept is useful in explaining the relation between IS and strategy. This paper offers an outline for a conceptual business model, and proposes that it should include customers and competitors, the offering, activities and organisation, resources and factor market interactions. The causal inter-relations and the longitudinal processes by which business models evolve should also be included. The model criticises yet draws on traditional strategy theory and on the literature that addresses business models directly. The business model is illustrated by an ERP implementation in a European multi-national company.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, IEEE SIIT 2015. - 9781467395335
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding implications on firm performance from the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) is critical in order for firms to make rational decisions regarding business model configurations and investments in IoT. The transition between the current state and widespread adoption and diffusion of IoT is expected to be complex, and standardization is one of multiple barriers discussed in research regarding Internet of Things. In order to ensure interoperability between billions of heterogeneous devices, standardization may be a significant factor with potential impact on IoT investments. To expand our understanding of strategic implications of IoT investments, this paper analyzes the impact of IoT on business models and sources of value creation by applying a proposed framework to empirical illustrations. Further research is needed to support development of frameworks and to advance our understanding of how firms should act in order to meet challenges generated by the emergence of IoT.

  • Business models for m-services : Exploring the e-newspaper case from a consumer view
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organizations. - Hershey, PA : Idea Group Publishing. - 1539-2937 .- 1539-2929. ; 6:2, s. 29-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the consumer view of an innovative m-service, that is, the e-newspaper, which is published for a mobile reading device equipped with an e-paper display. The research question of this article is: What are the implications of the consumer view of future m-service innovation on business models? In this article, we present empirical results from an online survey with 3,626 respondents representing the consumer view. The factor analysis revealed three aspects of consumer preferences, that is, Ubiquitous access, Prestige of news source and Local anchorage and advertising. These were then correlated with media behavior and e-newspaper preferences to indicate three possible market segments. We then discuss the implications that these consumer views could have on developing new business models, followed by a comparison to earlier research. Finally, we propose an integrated e-newspaper business model framework consisting of three models, ubiquitous, local, and prestige.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th European Conference on Information Systems, ECIS 2007. - St. Gallen, Switzerland : University of St. Gallen. ; , s. 251-262
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The newspaper industry is facing a new innovation, i.e. the e-newspaper published on e-paper technology, which holds the potential of replacing the printed newspaper in the future, heavily reducing production and distribution costs, thereby catching the interest of the industry. As the newspaper firms lately have experienced declining subscription and advertising revenues, they have been forced to seek other revenue sources, e.g. by providing online newspapers and mobile news services. Thus, the traditional business model from print has not been successfully transferred to digital media. In this paper, we have used the Business Model Construct to analyze the empirical findings from 19 interviews, 9 workshops and 4 brainstorming sessions with newspaper representatives to propose a business model framework for the e-newspaper. This framework includes four typical business models: International Newspaper, the Interpress Newsagent, Community Micronews and Local Newspaper and corresponding business model components.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Knowledge Management Research and Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1477-8246 .- 1477-8238. ; 5:3, s. 161-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to increase the understanding of how institutional forces and organizational context, in parallel with cognitive issues, impact knowledge sharing within multinational corporations (MNCs). Furthermore, the aim is to elaborate on differences between industries by comparing and contrasting a retail firm with a manufacturing firm. The focus is on IKEA and SCA Packaging and their efforts to share knowledge across national and intra-organizational boundaries. Despite differences between these two MNCs, the case studies illustrate that the will to share and absorb knowledge is very much influenced by institutional forces, as well as by the ways in which organizations are structured and controlled.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method for identification of a subsystem state-space model is presented. Having available models for the complete coupled system and for the remaining subsystem, the unknown model can be extracted via linear matrix operations only. Hence, the method is computationally cheap. However, as the a priori known models most likely are contaminated with modelling and parametric errors visavis physical reality, a sensitivity analysis is performed. Analytical expressions for the identified model sensitivity to parameterized uncertainties in the known models are derived. General conclusions based on inspection of the analytical expressions are validated by numerical experiments.

  • Gaining competitive advantage through information technology. A resource-based approach to the creation and employment of strategic IT resources
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information technology is a central phenomenon in modern society. It is widely used in a variety of settings and commercial firms use it for a variety of purposes. It could be an Internet application, a manufacturing system, office support software, electronic data interchange or something else, applied in order to create economic benefits through improvements of operative work tasks and business activities. But how do firms manage the IT investment? This thesis aims at increasing our understanding of how firms and managers act to create and employ strategic information technology resources, in order for the resources to become sources of competitive advantage. It is concerned in particular with so-called enterprise resource planning systems. Based on the resource-based view of strategic management, the thesis presents and analyses a particular IT project in a manufacturing company. The proposed framework offers an overview of the resource management process and its different phases, as well as a description of potential problems and solutions in conjunction with such processes. There are two overarching phases; the resource phase (including identification, development and protection of the resource) and the employment phase (including distribution and usage of the resource). Apart from a wide set of proposed problems and solutions associated with the different phases, three key properties of the process are addressed: Its cognitive component, the irreversibility of such projects in terms of finance, finance, cognition and culture, and the role of top management.

  • 2008
  • Rapport (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This memo focuses the challenges brought upon traditional security integrators as a result of the digitalisation of services through the assimilation of IP-connectable security products. Challenges to security integrators: • Develop an ROI thinking, including demonstrating the extended functionality, the scalability of IP networks, and being able to offer hybrid solutions. • Being able to sell to CIOs, CFOs, CEO’s and other executives. • Being able to demonstrate real IP success cases, and not just rely on theory, logic and rhetoric. • Develop the necessary technical, sales, sourcing and logistics competence, while at the same time being able to develop other strategic initiatives.
