• Incidence and survival of squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue in Scandinavia, with special reference to young adults.
• 2002
• Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : Wiley. - 0020-7136. ; 101:1, s. 95-99
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• In several countries, increased incidence of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue in young adults has been suspected during the last decades. Some reports indicate a lower survival rate for young patients compared to older patients. In other reports, there has not been any considerable difference in survival when comparing young adults to older patients, whereas some authors have shown better survival for young adults. This disease is rare in young adults, and early reports were based on comparable small numbers and selected patients. Our aim was first to perform a population-based study to determine if an increased incidence in SCC of the tongue could be verified in a larger population comprising the Scandinavian countries Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway. A second aim was to determine survival rates for young adults compared to older patients. The material was based on the annual cancer incidence and survival reports from the Scandinavian cancer registries. The study period was 1960-1994. During that period, 5,024 SCCs of the tongue were reported. Of these, 276 (5.5%) were young adults (20-39 years). The incidence increased at all ages except for women 65-79 years old. The increase was most pronounced in young adults: 0.06-0.32 for men and 0.03-0.19 for women, counted by 100,000 person-years. Relative survival was significantly better for young adults compared to older patients.

• Expert-Guided Security Risk Assessment of Evolving Power Grids
• 2022
• Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073. ; 15:9, s. 3237-
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Electric power grids, which form an essential part of the critical infrastructure, are evolving into highly distributed, dynamic networks in order to address the climate change. This fundamental transition relies on extensive automation solutions based on communications and information technologies. Thus, it also gives rise to new attack points for malicious actors and consequently, increases the vulnerability of the electric energy system. This study presents a qualitative assessment of power grid cybersecurity through expert interviews across countries in Europe and the U.S. to gain understanding of the latest developments and trends in the cybersecurity of future electric energy systems. The horizon of the assessment is 10 years spanning until the early 2030s. Thereafter, the study identifies how and to which extent the risks identified to be most significant are understood and addressed in the latest research and industry publications aiming at identifying areas deserving specific further attention. The most significant threats based on the assessment are False Data Injection (FDI), Denial of Service (DoS) supply chain, and ransomware and malware attacks.

• Making equality work : Ambiguities, conflicts and change agents in the implementation of equality policies in public sector organisations
• 2014
• Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• The overall aim of this study is to contribute to knowledge about the implementation of equality policies in public sector organisations. This is achieved through the development of a theoretical framework of feminist implementation studies. It involves the study of influential factors that impact upon the implementation process, with the aim of contributing to an understanding of the outcome of implementation processes within the equality policy field. The methodology used is based on qualitative case study research combined with a meta-analysis that allows for comparisons across cases. Four initiatives in the implementation of gender mainstreaming strategy were studied in different contexts, namely, two local municipalities and one government agency in Sweden. The main questions asked are: How was gender mainstreaming implemented? What were the main factors influencing the implementation process and why? What was the impact of change actors working to implement gender mainstreaming? The case studies were conducted using an interactive research approach where the different dilemmas encountered by the gender mainstreaming practitioners are used as a starting point for developing a joint learning process. The thesis comprises an introduction and five published papers. The main findings of the study include how the implementation process developed over time and the impact of the micropractices of the “gender mainstreamers” involved. The study provides insights into the factors influencing the implementation process, and how these factors change over time. Different types and levels of conflict, together and interlinked with different ambiguities, affect the practical work where dilemmas inherent in the concepts of “gender”, “equality” and “change” become central. Overall, the study shows how the specific preconditions for implementation of gender mainstreaming make the local arenas of implementation crucial for understanding the outcomes.

• Incumbent Renomination : Accountability and Gender Bias
• 2019
• Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• Party recruiters in proportional-representation (PR) systems are forced to do what their majoritarian counterparts are not: they need to rank-order all their candidates on the party ballots based on whom they most wish to get elected. Consequently, new candidates and incumbents alike compete for a limited number of electable ballot slots. This means that incumbent legislators in PR settings are far from guaranteed an electable spot on the party ballot, but instead need to go through a new selection round ahead of every election. This dissertation offers a pioneering study of incumbent renomination in flexible-list PR settings. The aim is to investigate whether incumbents’ electoral and legislative performance forms the basis of the selection criteria used by party recruiters when renomination decisions are made. The dissertation relies on a wide array of unique data, including a panel dataset of all Czech legislators elected in seven consecutive elections between 1996 and 2017 as well as rich elite-interview and participant-observation data collected in the Slovak parliament. The three essays that comprise this dissertation broadly focus on two dimensions of incumbent renomination: accountability and gender bias. Essay I critically examines the potential role incumbent renomination plays in fostering individual accountability in PR systems where party accountability looms large. Empirical tests show that the candidates placed in non-electable ballot spots who succeed in attracting a large number of votes are indeed rewarded with a more electable ballot spot in the next election. Essays II and III examine whether incumbent renomination can provide the cure for the chronic underrepresentation of women in politics by offering an avenue where party selectors’ stereotypical views of women’s unsuitability for a political career can be challenged. The results disprove this expectation and show that female incumbents in both established and new parties get different returns on their electoral and legislative performance when renomination decisions are made. It is further shown that female incumbents continue to face structural constraints that limit their ability to excel in tasks that form the backbone of incumbents’ evaluation at renomination. Taken together, this dissertation demonstrates that the study of incumbent renomination can offer an indispensable contribution to the debates on accountability, delegation and representation in democratic systems.

• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings of 8th International CDIO Conference, Brisbane, Australia.
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Nordic Five Tech (N5T) is a strategic alliance between five technical universities in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The overall aim is to “utilize shared and complementary strengths and create synergy within education, research and innovation”. In this paper we focus on university educational development issues by investigating the program leadership at five Nordic technical universities. Specifically, the paper compares definitions, views and experiences of education leadership in the Nordic Five Tech (N5T) universities. The paper does this by, first, reviewing the definitions of roles and responsibilities for program directors at each university, and second, by presenting results from a survey carried out in March 2012 among program directors at the N5T universities. Based on this data, we analyze how program directors experience their role, their possibilities to lead, and their opportunities of learning to lead. How is time for reflection and development as leaders handled at the different universities? The paper goes on to consider what impact the mandate of the leadership role has on the possibilities for developing educational programs. For instance, how can program directors ensure that learning objectives concerning generic skills and abilities are reached? How can program directors drive implementation of integrative and value-oriented topics such as sustainable development, innovation and entrepreneurship?

• Countering Threats - a Comprehensive Model for Utilization of Social Media for Security and law Enforcement Authorities
• 2014
• Ingår i: ECCWS-2014 Proceedings of the 13th European conference on cyber warfare and security. The university of Piraeus Greece July 03-04. - : Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. - 9781910309254 ; , s. 102-109
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• The increased adoption of social media has presented security and law enforcement authorities with significant new challenges. For example, the Swedish Security Service (SAPO) asserts that a large proportion of radicalization takes place in open fora online. Still, approaches to contain social media-driven challenges to security, particularly in democratic societies, remain little explored. Nonetheless, this type of knowledge may become relevant in European countries in the near future: Amongst other factors, the challenging economic situation has resulted in increased public discontent leading to emergence or manifestation of groups that seek to challenge the existing policies by almost any means. Use of social media multiplies the number of vectors that need law enforcement attention. First, a high level of social media adaption allows groups to reach and attract a wider audience. Unlike previously, many groups today consist of a large but very loosely connected network. This lack of cohesion can present a challenge for authorities, to identify emerging key actors and assess threat levels. Second, a high level of mobile web penetration has allowed groups to ad-hoc organize, amend plans and redirect physical activities. Third, the tool social media is as not exclusive to potential perpetrators of unlawful action, but is as well available to law enforcement authorities. Yet, efficient utilization of social media requires a deep understanding of its nature and a well-crafted, comprehensive approach. Acknowledging the broad functionality of social media, as well as its current status in the society, this article describes a model process for security authorities and law enforcement work with social media in general and security services work in particular. The process is cyclic and largely modular. It provides a set of goals and tasks for each stage of a potential event, rather than fixed activities. This allows authorities to adapt the process to individual legal frameworks and organization setups. The approach behind the process is holistic where social media is regarded as both source and destination of information. Ultimately, the process aims at efficiently and effectively mitigating the risk of virtual and physical violence.

• Retail success : The impact of space and agglomeration
• 2016
• Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• This licentiate thesis provides an economic analysis of the retail sector, focusing on the factors influencing sales and thus the retail performance of regions and shopping centers. The two essays presented in this thesis can be read independently of each other, but both rest on the theoretical framework of agglomeration economies in addition to consumer demand and supply theory.Chapter one deals with a theoretical exploration of these issues and presents an overview of the retail industry, specifically from a Swedish point of view. The second chapter, “Determinants of Regional Retail Performance”, analyses which factors influence the level of retail sales, within both durables and non-durables, in Swedish regions over a seven-year period. The study shows that agglomeration and retail diversity are influential factors when explaining why some regions perform better than others in terms of retail turnover. The last chapter, “External versus internal shopping center characteristics – which is more important?”, investigates whether external or internal factors explain the performance of shopping centers. The results capture a higher overall effect from the internal factors, especially the tenant mix. However, agglomeration economies also play a role in explaining center performance. In both chapters, novel and detailed data over a whole country, in this case Sweden, are used. To sum up, the empirical results show that the success factor at a regional or a shopping center level in terms of boosting retail sales depends on the regional market size. However, even more important is the amount of product diversity available to the consumer, either at the regional or the shopping center level. This is also a feature that policy makers as well as center management can influence, as oppose to regional size, which must be seen as a more fixed or consistent factor.

• Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 162, s. S1-S10
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• This special volume originates from the International Conference on Innovation and Management held at University of Vaasa in Finland in 2014. Talks with the key note speaker and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cleaner Production led to an idea to develop a special volume about innovative products and services according to the themes of the conference. Thus, the purpose of this special volume is to explore different viewpoints of how innovative products and services may support sustainable societal development. There are five thematic areas with papers that describe new advancements in different industries and organizations. The included papers cover relevant theoretical background and present case studies and practical results. This special volume shows that great progresses are being made in different thematic areas but also that there are so much more waiting to be done for sustainable societal development. This volume indicates that cross-disciplinary approach is truly needed to achieve societal sustainable development. This requires people to change their mindsets and genuinely co-operate towards better future. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

• 2011
• Ingår i: Memory & Cognition. - : Springer. - 0090-502X .- 1532-5946. ; 39:2, s. 276-290
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Two structural-priming experiments investigated how bilinguals represent syntactic structures. According to the shared-syntax account (Hartsuiker, Pickering, & Veltkamp, 2004), bilinguals have a single syntactic representation for structures that exist in both languages, whereas separate-syntax accounts claim that the representations for these structures are language specific. Our experiments tested native speakers of Swedish who were highly proficient in English. The results showed that structural priming within language and between languages was equally strong. This indicates that representations of syntactic structures from different languages are shared and, therefore, supports the shared-syntax account.

• 2011
• Ingår i: Production of referring expressions. ; , s. 1-5
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• We report an experiment in which participants first heard a context sentence and saw a picture, and then had to produce a coherent discourse by describing the action of a previously introduced referent in a target picture. They described the picture either to an addressee or in the absence of an addressee. The results showed that participants produced more pronouns and fewer repeated noun phrases when the referent was mentioned as the subject than the object in the preceding sentence and when a competitor was not mentioned in the preceding sentence than it was. These linguistic saliency effects were not affected by the presence or absence of an addressee. In contrast, the effect of visual presence of a competitor did interact with addressee presence. In the presence of an addressee, speakers produced more pronouns when there was no visually present competitor than when there was, but no such visual saliency effect occurred in the absence of an addressee. We conclude that speakers take into account the referent's visual saliency for the addressee's benefit, but the linguistic saliency effect is independent of whether the addressee is present.

• Ingår i: Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1747-0218 .- 1747-0226. ; 69:6, s. 1109-1128
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Two experiments investigated whether the choice of anaphoric expression is affected by the presence of an addressee. Following a context sentence and visual scene, participants described a target scene that required anaphoric reference. They described the scene either to an addressee (Experiment 1) or without an addressee (Experiment 2). When an addressee was present in the task, participants used more pronouns and fewer repeated noun phrases when the referent was the grammatical subject in the context sentence than when it was the grammatical object and they used more pronouns when there was no competitor than when there was. They used fewer pronouns and more repeated noun phrases when a visual competitor was present in the scene than when there was no visual competitor. In the absence of an addressee, linguistic context effects were the same as those when an addressee was present, but the visual effect of the competitor disappeared. We conclude that visual salience effects are due to adjustments that speakers make when they produce reference for an addressee, whereas linguistic salience effects appear whether or not speakers have addressees.

• 2023
• Ingår i: Journal of memory and language (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0749-596X .- 1096-0821. ; 129
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Four structural priming experiments investigated whether the lexical boost is due to the repeated head verb of the primed structure or due to the repetition of any verb, testing structural priming of ditransitive structures (The hotel owner decided to loan the tourist a tent/a tent to the tourist). In Experiments 1–3, we manipulated the repetition of the matrix verb (decided) that is not the syntactic head in the primed structure. The results showed abstract structural priming of the embedded ditransitive structure but the repetition of the matrix verb did not boost the priming. In addition to manipulating the repetition of the matrix verb, we also manipulated the head verb of the primed structure (loan) in Experiment 4. It showed a lexical boost with the repetition of the head verb but no boost with the repetition of the matrix verb. These results are consistent with the residual activation model, which only predicts a boost from the verb that is the head of the primed structure. They do not support models which predict that the repetition of any lexical material in a sentence boosts priming.

• 129Xe NMR analysis of pore structures and adsorption phenomena in rare-earth element phosphates
• 2022
• Ingår i: Microporous and Mesoporous Materials. - : Elsevier. - 1387-1811 .- 1873-3093. ; 344
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Rare-earth elements (REEs) are indispensable in various applications ranging from catalysis to batteries and they are commonly found from phosphate minerals. Xenon is an excellent exogenous NMR probe for materials because it is inert and its 129Xe chemical shift is very sensitive to its local physical or chemical environment. Here, we exploit, for the first time, 129Xe NMR for the characterization of porous structures and adsorption properties of REE phosphates (REEPO4). We study four different REEPO4 samples (REE = La, Lu, Sm and Yb), including both light (La and Sm) and heavy (Lu and Yb) as well as diamagnetic (La and Lu) and paramagnetic (Sm and Yb) REEs. 129Xe resonances are very sensitive to the porous structures and moisture content of the REEPO4 samples. In the samples treated at a lower temperature (80 °C), free water hinders the access of hydrophobic xenon into small mesopores, but the treatment at a higher temperature (200 °C) removes the free water and allows xenon to explore the mesopores. Based on a standard two-site exchange model analysis of the variable-temperature 129Xe chemical shifts, as well as its proposed, novel modification for paramagnetic materials, the average mesopore sizes were determined. The size was the largest (79 nm) for the La sample with mixed monazite (70%) and rhabdophane (30%) phases and the smallest (6 nm) for the Yb sample with pure xenotime phase. The mesopore sizes of the Lu and Yb samples (12 and 6 nm) differed by a factor of two regardless of their similar xenotime phase. The 129Xe NMR analysis revealed that the heats of adsorption of the samples are similar, varying between 8.7 and 10.1 kJ/mol. For diamagnetic samples, computational modelling confirmed the order of magnitude of the chemical shifts of Xe adsorbed on surfaces and therefore the validity of the two-site exchange model analysis. Overall, 129Xe NMR provides exceptionally versatile information about the pore structures and adsorption properties of REEPO4 materials, which may be very useful for developing the extraction processes and applications of REEs.

• Ingår i: Journal of Solid State Chemistry. - : Elsevier. - 0022-4596 .- 1095-726X. ; 311
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• 31P solid state NMR studies combined with DFT calculations were conducted over a chosen series of rare earth element phosphates (REEPO4s), selected on the basis of the size and magnetic properties of REEs (La, Sm, Lu and Yb). PXRD analysis revealed the presence of rhabdophane (La, Sm), monazite (La) and xenotime (Lu, Yb) phases of these phosphate compounds. The direct excitation and cross-polarization 31P NMR studies together with calculations confirmed the PXRD results for the abovementioned bulk structures, but also revealed presence of several local phosphorus environments on surfaces. NMR is sensitive to the atomic level local interactions, and we were able to show that the combination of experimental and theoretical NMR methods can provide information unavailable with other methods. Due to the distinct coordination of the water molecules to crystal surfaces with different Miller plane cleavages, we were able to identify from the NMR spectra the surface structures of the studied minerals. This adds to the knowledge of the bulk structures of REE phosphates and provides preliminary data for studies on coordination of various ligands on REE phosphate surfaces. This combination of experimental and computational methods can further be used for studies on surface chemistry, important for applications in catalysis and extraction of REEs from the minerals.

• The geometric surface structure of a (2 × 2)-S layer formed by adsorption of hydrogen sulfide at 185 K on the Co(0 0 0 1) surface has been determined by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) experiments and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The favored atomic configuration consists of sulfur atoms residing at the fcc-hollow sites with S-Co distance of 2.2 ± 0.1 Å. Buckling in the first layer is negligible and the three nearest-neighbor Co atoms below the S atom are symmetrically moved by 0.05 ± 0.09 Å along the surface away from the S atom. The DFT calculations confirm the hollow-site adsorption and give further information on the electronic structure of the system. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

• Ingår i: Sleep Medicine Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 1087-0792 .- 1532-2955. ; 49
• Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
• There are suggestions that the loss of female sex hormones following menopause is critical for the development or progression of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). We conducted a review of the literature on the role of menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in SDB risk. There is an increase in SDB during the menopausal transition period, but data on an effect beyond that of increasing age and changes in body habitus are weak or absent. Early community-based, observational studies reported a protective effect by HRT on SDB prevalence, but this could possibly be explained as a healthy user effect. Interventional studies of the effect of HRT on SDB are sparse, with only a few randomized placebo-controlled studies, often performed on small samples of women without clinically significant SDB. HRT regimens have varied and all the studies are fairly old. They do not definitely assure the alleviation of SDB and HRT cannot thus be recommended as treatment for SDB. It is concluded that there is no evidence that female sex hormone changes during menopause per se are able to explain the increase in SDB in midlife women and conclusions on the effect of HRT on SDB cannot be drawn from the current literature.

• Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• This chapter examines the names and identities of Greek elites with Roman citizenship, namely, the possibilities that names and naming could provide for the expression of cultural (and other) identity in such context. Greek elite families under Roman rule often maintained their local importance. They sometimes acquired Roman citizenship and, consequently, gained access to Roman magistracies. Roman citizenship entailed adopting a Roman name, but the Greek elites could incorporate their own traditions into their Roman nomenclature and could thus express their (sometimes multiple) identities, especially through the choice of cognomina and patronymics. The chapter investigates these practices from the emergence of Greek elites with Roman citizenship in the first-century BCE to their occasional rise to the Roman senate and even the highest offices in the imperial period.

• Development of a method for monitoring of insect induced forest defoliation – limitation of MODIS data in Fennoscandian forest landscapes
• 2016
• Ingår i: Silva Fennica. - : Finnish Society of Forest Science. - 2242-4075. ; 50:2
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We investigated if coarse-resolution satellite data from the MODIS sensor can be used for regional monitoring of insect disturbances in Fennoscandia. A damage detection method based on z-scores of seasonal maximums of the 2-band Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI2) was developed. Time-series smoothing was applied and Receiver Operating Characteristics graphs were used for optimisation. The method was developed in fragmented and heavily managed forests in eastern Finland dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) (pinaceae) and with defoliation of European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer Geoffr.) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) and common pine sawfly (Diprion pini L.) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae). The method was also applied to subalpine mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. Czerepanovii N.I. Orlova) forests in northern Sweden, infested by autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata Borkhausen) and winter moth (Operophtera brumata L.). In Finland, detection accuracies were fairly low with 50% of the damaged stands detected, and a misclassification of healthy stands of 22%. In areas with long outbreak histories the method resulted in extensive misclassification. In northern Sweden accuracies were higher, with 75% of the damage detected and a misclassification of healthy samples of 19%. Our results indicate that MODIS data may fail to detect damage in fragmented forests, particularly when the damage history is long. Therefore, regional studies based on these data may underestimate defoliation. However, the method yielded accurate results in homogeneous forest ecosystems and when long-enough periods without damage could be identified. Furthermore, the method is likely to be useful for insect disturbance detection using future medium-resolution data, e.g. from Sentinel‑2.

• The effect of surgery in encephalopathy with electrical status epilepticus during sleep
• 2011
• Ingår i: Epilepsia. - : Wiley. - 0013-9580 .- 1528-1167. ; 52:3, s. 602-609
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• P>Purpose: We analyzed clinical and electroencephalography (EEG) outcomes of 13 patients with pharmacoresistant encephalopathy with electrical status epilepticus during sleep (ESES) following epilepsy surgery. Methods: All patients had symptomatic etiology of ESES and preoperative neuropsychological deterioration. Ten patients had daily atypical absences. Clinical outcome was assessed at 6 months and at 2 years after surgery. Clinical and EEG data were reviewed retrospectively. The spike propagation pattern and area and source strength in source montage were analyzed from preoperative and postoperative EEG studies. Key Findings: Preoperative sleep EEG showed electrical status epilepticus during sleep (SES) with one-way interhemispheric propagation in nine patients and with two-way interhemispheric propagation in four. The age of the patients at the time of surgery ranged from 3.6-9.9 years. Focal resection (two patients) or hemispherotomy (one patient with postoperative EEG) either terminated SES or restricted the discharge to one region. Either reduced SES propagation area or source strength was found in four of eight callosotomy patients with postoperative EEG. Of patients who had seizures preoperatively, Engel class I-II seizure outcome was observed in two of three children after focal resection or hemispherotomy and in two of eight children after callosotomy. None of these patients with Engel class I-II outcome had SES with two-way interhemispheric propagation on preoperative EEG. Cognitive deterioration was halted postoperatively in all except one patient. Cognitive catch-up of more than 10 IQ points was seen in three patients, all of whom had shown a first measured IQ of > 75. Significance: Patients with pharmacoresistant ESES based on symptomatic etiology may benefit from resective surgery or corpus callosotomy regarding both seizure outcome and cognitive prognosis.

• Development trends and challenges in Nordic political journalism
• 2021
• Ingår i: Power, Communication, and Politics in the Nordic Countries. - Göteborg : Nordicom. - 9789188855282 ; , s. 135-154
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The objective of this chapter is to describe and discuss some important political journalism development trends in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The term political journalism traditionally refers to news, commentaries, and other genres related to the coverage of political processes, institutions, and policy questions. It is, however, difficult to draw a clear dividing line between political news and other types of current affairs coverage. While political logic once dominated the discourses of political journalism, the emergence of the news media as an independent institution gave journalists a substantial definitional power and an ability to define the communicative rules of the game, but professional political sources quickly learned to exploit news media logics for their own aims and objectives. During the last decade, the growth of social media networks and the relative weakening of the legacy media has created a less stable situation for the negotiation of control between journalists and their sources.

• The New Normal : Scandals as a Standard Feature of Political Life in Nordic Countries
• 2018
• Ingår i: International Journal of Communication. - 1932-8036. ; 12, s. 3087-3108
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• All political scandals trigger discussions of trust, but in a competitive commercial media climate, both important and minor legal offences and moral transgressions are regularly treated as scandalous media events. Today, actors in social media and mainstream media organizations can collaborate on cases that might develop into scandal news. In this article, which is based on an analysis of 101 political scandals in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden from 2010 to 2016-and a study of political scandals in the wake of the #MeToo movement in 2017-2018-we show that mediated scandals have become a standard feature of political life in Nordic countries. Compared with earlier decades, there has been an exponential rise in the number of scandals; at the same time, the rate of resignations and dismissals following scandals is lower than before. Offences related to economic affairs, including corruption, and personal behavior scandals, such as accusations of sexual harassment, constitute the most prominent scandal types. However, regarding sexually related behavior scandals, there are interesting differences between the Nordic countries.

• Design and Baseline Characteristics of the Finerenone in Reducing Cardiovascular Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease Trial
• 2019
• Ingår i: American journal of nephrology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1421-9670 .- 0250-8095. ; 50:5, s. 345-356
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials. Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥25 mL/min/1.73 m2 and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio ≥30 to ≤5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level α = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure. Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen. Trial Registration: EudraCT number: 2015-000950-39; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02545049.
