  • Quantified economic and environmental values through Functional Productization : A simulation approach
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Environmental impact assessment review. - : Elsevier. - 0195-9255 .- 1873-6432. ; 70, s. 71-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial companies rely on hardware and services from external providers to deliver functions that are critical to their operations, increasingly demanding solutions that not only meet technical and availability requirements but are sustainable too. Traditionally, industrial companies choose and purchase hardware and maintenance support to fulfil their functional requirements. An alternative arrangement, known as Functional Product (FP), involves external providers supplying customers with the functionality they require through contracts that specify guaranteed functional availability whilst giving providers freedom to choose and retain ownership of the supplied hardware and services. This paper describes an innovative simulation modelling and optimization approach to quantitatively compare economic and environmental values resulting from transition from traditional to FP arrangements. The approach is demonstrated through the analysis of a scenario involving a hydraulic drive system provider and set of customers in Sweden, with the results exhibiting simultaneous improvement in economic and environmental values at each stage of the transition.

  • Toward an improved strategy for Functional Product development by predicting environmental and economic sustainability
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier. - 2212-8271 .- 2212-8271. ; 59, s. 208-213, s. 208-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functional Product (FP) has emerged as a business concept aimed at offering a function or performance, mainly in business-to- business applications, on an agreed upon level of availability and cost as well as at providing incitements towards a sustainable growth. Today the literature expanded into various specific approaches and IT solutions measuring sustainability. However, the literature lacks such approaches within the FP context. This explorative paper proposes on a conceptual level a strategy to predict a sustainability impact of an FP in terms of environmental and economic sustainability and optimize the FP configuration. This strategy is based on scenario modelling and simulation -driven approach. The practical significance of the proposed strategy lies in its implication to avoid costly “trial and error” method performed in the real world and to enable the development of more sustainable products. Through the proposed strategy, it is foreseen that sustainability impact can be quantified and minimised during the FP system development.

  • The epidemiology of sudden infant death syndrome and attacks of lifelessness in Sweden.
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Acta paediatrica Scandinavica. - 0001-656X. ; 76:6, s. 898-906
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Infants who died showing the syndrome of sudden infant death (SIDS) and infants who survived attacks of lifelessness (AL) were examined in a prospective epidemiological multicentre study over 24 months covering close to 40% of all births in Sweden. Seventy SIDS cases and 34 cases of AL were observed, giving an incidence for SIDS of 0.94/1000 and for AL of 0.46/1000. This SIDS incidence is higher than that observed during the seventies. The boy/girl ratio was 1.4:1 for SIDS and 1.6:1 for AL. The age distribution for AL resembled that for SIDS. Similarities were also seen with regard to place of occurrence. Sixty per cent of the SIDS cases occurred during the daytime/evening. Twenty-nine per cent of the infants with AL had more than one apneic spell during the three-day-period around the attack, indicating a period of respiratory instability, but only 12% had such spells later on. None of the infants who had had AL died from SIDS. The possible relationship between AL and SIDS is discussed.

  • Apex predator induces predator-rich ecosystem state innorthern lakes
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Large predators are disappearing from ecosystems around the world. If predator speciesfacilitate each other’s existence through niche construction, this development could causecascading predator collapses and reduce ecosystem resilience. However, the importance offacilitation for the assembly and function of predator communities remains poorly understood. Here, we show that a large piscivorous fish, the northern pike (Esox lucius), enables theformation of a numerous and diverse predator community by inducing a dwarf ecotype ofEuropean whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus). Pike increases the standing biomass of prey-sized(<200mm) whitefish with a factor of 12.6, allowing small-gaped fish species (Percafluviatilis, Lota lota, Salvelinus alpinus and Salmo trutta) to go from small-growinggeneralists, to large-growing piscivores. Similarly, a guild of piscivorous birds (Gavia arctica,G. stellata, Sterna paradisaea, S. hirundo, Mergus serrator and M. merganser) shift from amixed diet to relying mainly on whitefish prey in presence of pike. Through this regime shift, the functional piscivore biomass in the non-pike fish community increases with a factor of14.2, and the density- and species richness of piscivorous birds increase with factors of 2.08and 2.16, respectively. Our results demonstrate how feedbacks between presence/absence ofimportant predators and the phenotype of prey may keep complex ecosystems in predator-richor predator-depleted states.
