- Santa Cruz de los Pinos is a small town like most others in the Cuban countryside. But half a century ago it was the epicenter of the 1962 Missile Crisis. During that time it served as a Soviet base for middle-range nuclear missiles, and the US air reconnaissance photos of it were spread through media all around the world. The crisis was solved through negotiations without Cuban involvement, and as a result of this neglect the Missile Crisis has been an under-communicated part of history in Cuba. A Swedish-Cuban research project has now investigated what kinds of memories of the crisis remain today at the former missile base – in the ground as well as in people’s minds. Digging in the ground has proved to be an effective way to start a remembering process and to help disarm a politically loaded history and uncover other stories than those dominating ‘big history’.

- The 1962 Missile Crisis is a well-known episode of the Cold War and twentieth-century history. It is documented in a wide variety of sources, and it has been the subject of extensive historical research. But what remains today of the missile sites that once were a focus of world interest? What does a World Crisis in ruin look like? In order to find new ways of looking at the Crisis we conducted archaeological fieldwork, looking for memories in the ground as well as in people's minds. The pictorial results of our efforts are presented in this book.

- Background: The genes caspase-8 (CASP8) and caspase-10 (CASP10) functionally cooperate and play a key role in the initiation of apoptosis. Suppression of apoptosis is one of the major mechanisms underlying the origin and progression of cancer. Previous case-control studies have indicated that the polymorphisms CASP8 D302H and CASP10 V410I are associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer in the general population.Methods: To evaluate whether the CASP8 D302H (CASP10 V410I) polymorphisms modify breast or ovarian cancer risk in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, we analyzed 7,353 (7,227) subjects of white European origin provided by 19 (18) study groups that participate in the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA). A weighted cohort approach was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).Results: The minor allele of CASP8 D302H was significantly associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer (per-allele HR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.76-0.97; Ptrend = 0.011) and ovarian cancer (per-allele HR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.53-0.89; Ptrend = 0.004) for BRCA1 but not for BRCA2 mutation carriers. The CASP10 V410I polymorphism was not associated with breast or ovarian cancer risk for BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation carriers.Conclusions: CASP8 D302H decreases breast and ovarian cancer risk for BRCA1 mutation carriers but not for BRCA2 mutation carriers.Impact: The combined application of these and other recently identified genetic riskmodifiers could in the future allow better individual risk calculation and could aid in the individualized counseling and decision making with respect to preventive options in BRCA1 mutation carriers.

On Router Control for Congestion Avoidance

- This short paper deals with active queue management for computer networks. The goal is to develop control mechanisms for routers in heterogeneous networks that reduce traffic fluctuations. The proposed control strategy operates with local information (such as estimated arrival rates) and actively use the buffers to smooth traffic, and thus it avoids the buildup and propagation of traffic bursts.

- It is shown that the queuing delay involved in the congestion control algorithm is state-dependent and does not depend on the current time. Then, using an accurate formulation for buffers, networks with arbitrary topologies can be built. At equilibrium, our model reduces to the widely used setup by Paganini et al. Using this model, the delay-derivative is analyzed and it is proved that the delay time-derivative does not exceed one for the considered topologies. It is then shown that the considered congestion control algorithm globally stabilizes a delay-free single buffer network. Finally, using a specific linearization result for systems with state-dependent delays from Cooke and Huang, we show the local stability of the single bottleneck network.

- Half a century ago – in October 1962 – the world was on the threshold to the unthinkable: a full-scale nuclear war between the USA and the Soviet Union. The focus of the conflict was a number of Soviet launching sites for medium-range missiles situated in the Cuban countryside. Today, at first glance it is difficult to discover traces at these sites that testify to their important role in twentieth-century history. A closer look, however, reveals not only material remains but also an extensive, peaceful reuse of elements from the former military installations. This photo-essay presents some of the material evidence found during archaeological fieldwork at the missile site at Santa Cruz de los Pinos, also known as San Cristobal 3, situated c. 100 kilometres west of Havana.

- The development of future 3D-printed electronics relies on the access to highly conductive inexpensive materials that are printable at low temperatures (<100 C). The implementation of available materials for these applications are, however, still limited by issues related to cost and printing quality. Here, we report on the simple hydrothermal growth of novel nanocomposites that are well suited for conductive printing applications. The nanocomposites comprise highly Al-doped ZnO nanorods grown on graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The ZnO nanorods play the two major roles of (i) preventing GNPs from agglomerating and (ii) promoting electrical conduction paths between the graphene platelets. The effect of two different ZnO-nanorod morphologies with varying Al-doping concentration on the nanocomposite conductivity and the graphenedispersity are investigated. Time-dependent absorption, photoluminescence and photoconductivity measurements show that growth in high pH solutions promotes a better graphene dispersity, higher doping levels and enhanced bonding between the graphene and the ZnO nanorods. Growth in low pH solutions yields samples characterized by a higher conductivity and a reduced number of surface defects. These samples also exhibit a large persistent photoconductivity attributed to an effective charge separation and transfer from the nanorods to the graphene platelets. Our findings can be used to tailor the conductivity of novel printable composites, or for fabrication of large volumes of inexpensive porous conjugated graphene-semiconductor composites. © 2018 IOP Publishing Ltd.

- La autenticidad en la práctica. Ejemplos desde ocho sitios con arte rupestre clasificados como patrimonio mundial Durante la última década la Carta de Ename ha reavivado las discusiones sobre la posición de las instituciones responsables de la administración del patrimonio cultural en relación con el uso del concepto de autenticidad en los materiales, y a la participación más activa de la sociedad civil en los sitios clasificados como patrimonio mundial. A pesar de que dicho documento representa un avance significativo en lo que respecta a la modernización de la idea de autenticidad y a la relación patrimonio-espectador- especialistas, el propósito de este artículo es exponer las limitaciones y dificultades prácticas de los avances teóricos de dicha carta. Se presenta un análisis del concepto de autenticidad a través del estudio de la “puesta en escena” y la comunicación pública en ocho sitios con arte rupestre, de diferentes partes del mundo, catalogados como Patrimonio Mundial. El texto revisa la idea de autenticidad que se utiliza en dichos sitios, el poder de las entidades responsables de ellos y cómo el concepto de autenticidad se encarna en cada uno dependiendo de la posición adoptada por las entidades que lo administran. Examples from eight rock art sites classified as World Heritage During the last decade the Ename Charter has vitalized the discussions of cultural heritage management concerning stakeholder participation and a more active public involvement, as well as concerning the issue of the authenticity at heritage sites. Despite the fact that the charter represents important developments and modernizations of the concept of authenticity, and the relation between cultural heritage–public–experts, the paper highlights the practical limitations and difficulties of the theoretical developments in the charter. The paper presents an analysis of the concept of authenticity through a study of the staging and the public communication at eight World Heritage classified rock art sites from different parts of the world. The paper analyses the idea of authenticity that is used at these heritage sites, the power of the heritage management responsible for them and how the concept of authenticity are materialized at the sites due to the attitude of the heritage managers. - This article presents new findings from a contemporary archaeology project that has been exploring the Missile Crisis (1962) and its material and immaterial remains in Cuba since 2005. The project is a cooperation between Swedish archaeologists and Cuban archaeologists, anthropologists and historians, and its primary aim is to complement the dominant narrative of the crisis with material and immaterial remains and memories in a way that approaches and explains the event “from below”. The current text focuses on the life histories of a Soviet nuclear missile hangar located at El Cacho, one of the former Soviet nuclear missile sites located in Los Palacios, and of the US Marston mats that can be found at a number of locations in farmsteads and villages surrounding the former missile sites in the Los Palacios and San Cristóbal areas. The life histories of these objects in western Cuba present the reader with new insights concerning the crisis that until now have been more or less concealed and unknown, contributing new complementary dimensions to the understanding of the Missile Crisis while also challenging the stereotypes constructing the dominant narrative.
