  • The school lighting innovation dilemma
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, Volume 1099. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1755-1307 .- 1755-1315.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a qualitative descriptive case study that aims to build awareness about the need for improvement of the indoor environment in classrooms and to exemplify how renewal-oriented processes can be initiated. The study focuses on innovation processes that have resulted in both completely new designs and further spread of innovative solutions. The reason for the need to improve is that too many pupils and students have problems with concentration, relaxation and recuperation. The number of diagnoses such as Autism and ADHD is growing. One factor which significantly influences the pupil's mental well-being is the daily physical environment. The single aspect which may be improved in reasonable time, at a reasonable cost, is the lighting design of classrooms. An underlying reason for the habit to continue installing insipid uniform static "light-carpets" is the lack of awareness about how lighting affects wellbeing and health. As with innovation in other industries, it is an innovation dilemma that the vast majority of the people who sell and procure classroom lighting tend to prefer the established solutions that they are used to. The article describes how Malmö's early investment in Human Centric Lighting and the unique indoor environment of the Study hall in the Centre for Economic Sciences at Uppsala University are used as role models for lighting design in classrooms. The case study combines the authors' own observations and earlier interviews with users. Malmö's temporal light variation and parts of the Study hall's lighting design are used in more than 30 classrooms, in Malmö, Stockholm Business School and Iggesund. The article concludes with suggestions on how today's lighting design knowledge and technology can be combined to provide more advanced adaptations to the varying lighting needs of pupils, students and teachers.

  • DNA digestion and formation of DNA-network structures with Holliday junction-resolving enzyme Hjc_15-6 in conjunction with polymerase reactions
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biotechnology. - 1873-4863.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recently identified novel Holliday junction-resolving enzyme, termed Hjc_15-6, activity investigation results imply DNA cleavage by Hjc_15-6 in a manner that potentially enhances the molecular self-assembly that may be exploited for creating DNA-networks and nanostructures. The study also demonstrates Pwo DNA polymerase acting in combination with Hjc_15-6 capability to produce large amounts of DNA that transforms into large DNA-network structures even without DNA template and primers. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that Hjc_15-6 prefers Holliday junction oligonucleotides as compared to Y-shaped oligonucleotides as well as efficiently cleaves typical branched products from isothermal DNA amplification of both linear and circular DNA templates amplified by phi29-like DNA polymerase. The assembly of large DNA network structures was observed in real time, by transmission electron microscopy, on negative stained grids that were freshly prepared, and also on the same grids after incubation for 4 days under constant cooling. Hence, Hjc_15-6 is a promising molecular tool for efficient production of various DNA origamis that may be implemented for a wide range of applications such as within medical biomaterials, catalytic materials, molecular devices and biosensors.

  • A new understanding of au-assisted growth of III-V semiconductor nanowires
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : Wiley. - 1616-3028 .- 1616-301X. ; 15:10, s. 1603-1610
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Semiconductor nanowires of III-V materials have generated much interest in recent years. However, the growth mechanisms by which these structures form are not well understood. The so-called vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism has often been proposed for III-V systems, with a chemically inert, liquid metal particle (typically Au) acting as a physical catalyst. We assert here that An is, in fact, not inert with respect to the semiconductor material but rather interacts with it to form a variety of intermetallic compounds. Moreover, we suggest that III-V nanowire growth can best be understood if the metallic particle is not a liquid, but a solid-phase solution or compound containing An and the group III material. The four materials GaP, GaAs, InP, and InAs will be considered, and growth behavior related to their particular temperature-dependent interaction with Au.

  • Directed growth of branched nanowire structures
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: MRS Bulletin. - 1938-1425. ; 32:2, s. 127-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe the production of hierarchical branched nanowire structures by the sequential seeding of multiple wire generations with metal nanoparticles. Such complex structures represent the next step in the study of functional nanowires, as they increase the potential functionality of nanostructures produced in a self-assembled way. It is possible, for example, to fabricate a variety of active heterostructure segments with different compositions and diameters within a single connected structure. The focus of this work is on epitaxial III-V semiconductor branched nanowire structures, with the two materials GaP and InAs used as typical examples of branched structures with cubic (zinc blende) and hexagonal (wurtzite) crystal structures. The general morphology of these structures will be described, as well as the relationship between morphology and crystal structure.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 6:12, s. 2842-2847
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate here a method for controlled production of complex self-assembled three-dimensional networks of InAs nanowires on a substrate, based on sequentially seeded epitaxial nanowire structures, or "nanotrees". A position-controlled array of trunk nanowires is first produced using lithographically defined Au particles as seeds. With these wires positioned along the proper crystallographic directions with respect to each other, nanotree branches grow toward neighboring trunks, connecting them together. Finally, we investigate the crystal structure of the interconnected nanotrees, demonstrating that branch growth after the contact with the second trunk has an epitaxial relationship to that trunk.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Microscopy and Microanalysis. - 1435-8115. ; 17:5, s. 752-758
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The twin interface structure in twinning superlattice InP nanowires with zincblende structure has been investigated using electron exit wavefunction restoration from focal series images recorded on an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope. By comparing the exit wavefunction phase with simulations from model structures, it was possible to determine the twin structure to be the ortho type with preserved In-P bonding order across the interface. The bending of the thin nanowires away from the intended ⟨110⟩ axis could be estimated locally from the calculated diffraction pattern, and this parameter was successfully taken into account in the simulations.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3372 .- 2040-3364. ; 8:7, s. 3936-3943
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have imaged GaP nanowires (NWs) incubated with human laminin, serum albumin (HSA), and blood plasma using both cryo-transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron based X-ray photoemission electron microscopy. This extensive imaging methodology simultaneously reveals structural, chemical and morphological details of individual nanowires and the adsorbed proteins. We found that the proteins bind to NWs, forming coronas with thicknesses close to the proteins' hydrodynamic diameters. We could directly image how laminin is extending from the NWs, maximizing the number of proteins bound to the NWs. NWs incubated with both laminin and HSA show protein coronas with a similar appearance to NWs incubated with laminin alone, indicating that the presence of HSA does not affect the laminin conformation on the NWs. In blood plasma, an intermediate sized corona around the NWs indicates a corona with a mixture of plasma proteins. The ability to directly visualize proteins on nanostructures in situ holds great promise for assessing the conformation and thickness of the protein corona, which is key to understanding and predicting the properties of engineered nanomaterials in a biological environment.

  • Crystal structure of branched epitaxial III-V nanotrees
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nano. - 1793-2920. ; 1:2, s. 139-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this review we discuss the morphology and crystal structure of branched epitaxial III-V semiconductor structures, so called nanotrees, based on our own work with GaP, InAs and GaP/InP. These structures are formed by epitaxial growth in a step-wise procedure where each level can be individually controlled in terms of diameter, length and composition. Poly-typism is commonly observed for III-Vs with zinc blende, wurtzite or combinations thereof as the resulting crystal structure. Here we review GaP as an example of zinc blende and InAs of wurtzite type of growth in terms of nanotrees with two to three levels of growth. Included are also previously unpublished results on the growth of GaP/InP nanotrees to demonstrate effects of heteroepitaxial growth with substantial mismatch. For these structures a topotaxial growth behavior was observed with InP wires crawling along or spiraling around the GaP nanowires acting as a free-standing substrates.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 18:48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of lamellar twinning in epitaxial particle-assisted GaAs <111>B nanowires are investigated in an extensive high resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) study of the low index zones <-100>, <-1-10>, <1-1-1> and <1-1-2>. As these directions are non-parallel to the (-1-1-1) twin planes we find that the twin segments exhibit two different zone axes as a consequence of twinning. In the first three cases the alternative zones were found to be <1-2-2> <11-4> and <11-5>. These findings are supported by a comparison of experimental HRTEM images and multi-slice simulations along with fast Fourier transform mapping. From the appearance of non-overlapping regions we conclude that the nanowires are bound by {111} facets only. The twin formation and the development of the stable side facets are discussed

  • EcoDesign: what's happening? An overview of the subject area of EcoDesign and of the papers in this special issue
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 14:15-16, s. 1291-1298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • EcoDesign is a concept including human sustainability priorities together with business interrelations. Its main objective in the improvementof product development methods is to reduce environmental loads. EcoDesign also includes a more open ambition to use inspiration from a widerfield of positive examples of smart products and methods, effective system solutions and attractive designs. It is not clear what sustainable productdevelopment is; what we can do is to try our best to find better solutions, get going and make sure that we learn from what happens. Our maingoal with this issue was to monitor ‘‘How to make it happen?’’ but we ended up with more questions and the lower ambition of, ‘‘What’s happening’’.Life-style elements such as brand label economy, development of new economies in Asia, aging populations in the old economies etc. makesthe picture even more complex and we still wonder, ‘‘How to make it happen’’. However, a few focal points can be observed:The tools in EcoDesign are not as important as specification and goal setting in early product development phases. How to organize productdevelopment is crucial in order to reach higher degrees of sustainability. The interrelations between resources and functionality must be enhanced.Environmental affection must be integrated into the human life-style and throughout the entire life-cycle of all products and services. To us it seems impossible to define a sustainable life-style and force everyone to follow. We must engage all stakeholders in envisioning andcreating the sustainable societies we hope to achieve.

  • Life Cycle Considerations in Sustainable Business Development. Eco-efficiency studies in Swedish industries
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis shows that there are reasons for placing some trust in the possibilities of aligning business goals and environmental goals, as well as in the possibilities of increasing eco-efficiency through technological development. The possibilities, although not unlimited, are not utilised to their full potential. For the function of exploring and exploiting such possibilities further, there are also reasons for placing some hope in the development of analytical tools, based on the merging of environmental economics with economics of technology and innovations. The environmental movement takes an interest both in the avoidance of negative impact and in the promotion of activity with positive long-term effect. However, resource refinement and production of performance potential for the future is hardly an explicit environmental priority today. In a long-term perspective this may be critical, because all activities have some negative effect and an activity that contributes to system improvement for the future normally requires more extensive present activity than a short-term solution. The thesis contains a case study showing that Ericsson Mobile's successful product development, in business terms, involves a remarkable product development, also in environmental terms. The analysed quotient, between the performance of the mobile phone and the loss of battery metal, illustrates the development of eco-efficiency. Compared to today's hesitation surrounding the possibility of an improvement factor of 4 or 10, it is interesting to note that the results of this case study show a relative improvement of the eco-efficiency by a factor in the order of magnitude of 4000, in the ten year period from 1988 to 1998. This result illustrates how a reduction of the battery weight has resulted in improvements of both the phone's usefulness and its environmental load. The exact value is, however, uncertain, among other things due to the uncertainty of the analyses as well as of the relevance of the environmental valuation of the metals, but the order of magnitude of the estimated improvement is interesting. Still, it is important to note that this level of improvement factor hardly can be regarded as generally applicable. It is normally more difficult to change established technologies, e.g. in relation to production of food and houses. The long-term sustainable system should enable profitability in activities that contribute a positive net effect to the total resource potential. However, the sustainability challenge contains a basic conceptual problem in that it has been difficult to understand the interrelation between society's general development goals and the environmental aspects of the sustainable development goal. It is a main conclusion that there is a need of further interdisciplinary research on how to use environmental information in business develop-ment to handle the sustainability challenge.

  • Use and perception of Design for Environment (DfE) in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Sweden
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: 2003 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS DESIGN AND INVERSE MANUFACTURING - ECODESIGN '03. ; , s. 723-730
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to give an image of the utilization and perception of DfE and methods and tools within some Swedish Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. The background is the large number of existing methods and tools in relation to the low utilization in the industry. The research method has been qualitative research interviews in ten companies. Some of the material is based on a Master Thesis written by Skoglund and Svensson (2002). The education level about DfE is very low and the overall motivation for DfE in the companies seems to be low or nonexistent. The DfE method and tool utilization is zero. One reason for this lack of interest seems to be the low interest in environmental questions and DfE among customers. The number of environmental and DfE requirements are low. The authors noted that environmental improvements have been made but not considered as environmental work, e.g. weight and fuel minimization but they are driven by for example quality or economical reasons. There are two ways to get environmental improvements by using methods and tools, by specific DfE methods and tools and by integration of environmental considerations in the ordinary design methods and tools.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 8:4, s. 1100-1104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate electrical properties of self-assembled branched InAs nanowires. The branched nanowires are catalytically grown using chemical beam epitaxy, and three-terminal nanoelectronic devices are fabricated from the branched nanowires using electron-beam lithography. We demonstrate that, in difference from conventional macroscopic junctions, the fabricated self-assembled nanowire junction devices exhibit tunable nonlinear electrical characteristics and a signature of ballistic electron transport. As an example of applications, we demonstrate that the self-assembled three-terminal nanowire junctions can be used to implement the functions of frequency mixing, multiplication, and phase-difference detection of input electrical signals at room temperature. Our results suggest a wide range of potential applications of branched semiconductor nanostructures in nanoelectronics.

  • Sustainability management in product development projects : the ABB experience
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 14:15-16, s. 1377-1385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes how ABB worked with environmental considerations when they developed their new capacitor. The sustainable development priorities are now integrated within their mainstream product development process model. The fact that ABB started a mandatory use of their GATE Model, including the sustainability considerations, verifies that ABB considers it to be a commercially sound methodology. The studied project resulted in a product with considerably better environmental performance than the traditional technology. One key factor is that the sustainability interest was truly advocated and supported by the management of the project.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 14:15-16, s. 1409-1419
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eco-design tools ought to be made more useful, so that they become effectively used in companies to support improvements of product systems. This article discusses the interconnections between environmental analysis and integrative cooperation in the product development processes. The study focuses on two different assessment tools, life cycle assessment (LCA) and environmental effect analysis (EEA), in three different combined uses. The discussion of the Eco-design methods focuses on integration in product development processes considering the relation to a product competitiveness perspective. The interviews indicate that the interconnection of methods is important as a key to real transformation of design practices.
