  • State of the Art in Industrial Automation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Industrial Cloud-Based Cyber-Physical Systems. - Cham : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783319056234 - 9783319056241 ; , s. 23-47
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last decades, industrial automation has become a driving force in all production systems. Technologies and architectures have emerged alongside the growing organisational structures of production plants. Every innovation had to start from the latest state-of-the-art systems within the respective domain. While investigating the introduction of service-oriented architectures to automation, and even down to the shop floor, one has to consider latest standards, proofed technologies, industrial solutions and latest research works in the automation domain. This chapter tries, without any claim to completeness, to provide a short summary of today’s situation and trends in automation.

  • A 70-Year Industrial Electronics Society Evolution Through Industrial Revolutions : The Rise and Flourishing of Information and Communication Technologies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 1932-4529 .- 1941-0115. ; 15:1, s. 115-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Industrial Revolution, which originally involved the change from an agrarian and handicraft economy to a market dominated by factory mechanization during the early 18th century, has profoundly shaped the world. It has progressed through four disruptive phases: Industry 1.0 through Industry 4.0. Industry 1.0 encompassed early automation, while Industry 2.0 began at the end of the 19th century, when enormous technological advances were made, such as mass production, electrification, and new modes of transportation. Industry 3.0 began during the 1970s, a decade that gave rise to the electronics, telecommunications, and computing that enable full automation and robotics. Industry 4.0 kicked off at the dawn of the third millennium, marked by the ubiquitous use of Internet technologies, which have radically transformed how people, society, and industry interact.

  • A migration approach towards a SOA-based next generation process control and monitoring
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2011. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781612849690 ; , s. 4319-4324
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interest in Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) in the automation domain has seen a rapid increase both from the academia as well as the industry recent years. Since green field plants today are not common, the partial migration of plant automation to SOA design is needed to introduce new functionalities. Thus strategies and approaches for migration from legacy to SOA architectures becomes of vital interest. This paper discusses different views on partial migration of a process monitoring and control system from legacy to SOA. The discussion includes a global top down view, a bottom up view, hardware/software considerations and a hint on training of personnel.

  • Ingår i: Industrial Cloud-Based Cyber-Physical Systems. - Cham : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783319056234 - 9783319056241 ; , s. 111-135
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As process control and monitoring systems based on a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) are maturing, the need increases for a systematic approach to migrate systems. The legacy systems are traditionally based on a strict hierarchy and in order to gradually allow additional cross-layer interaction, the migration procedure needs to consider both—functionality and architecture of the legacy system. The migration procedure proposed here aims to preserve the functional integration, organize the SOA cloud through grouping of devices, and maintain the performance aspects such as real-time control throughout the whole migration procedure.

    • Cities nowadays face complex challenges to meet objectives regarding socio-economic development and quality of life. The concept of “smart cities” is a response to these challenges. This paper explores “smart cities” as environments of open and user-driven innovation for experimenting and validating Future Internet-enabled services. Based on an analysis of the current landscape of smart city pilot programmes, Future Internet experimentally-driven research and projects in the domain of Living Labs, common resources regarding research and innovation can be identified that can be shared in open innovation environments. Effectively sharing these common resources for the purpose of establishing urban and regional innovation ecosystems requires sustainable partnerships and cooperation strategies among the main stakeholders.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Smart Grid Communications, SmartGridComm 2012. - 9781467309110 ; , s. 448-453
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Power quality monitoring is one of the key issues of managing an electrical grid, which is becoming even more important with more distributed and more variable generation. Today expensive equipment allows monitoring of the power network at key points, but for cost reasons this can not reach the residential end-user. To prevent an excessive need for specialized monitoring hardware, e.g. network analysers, it is proposed to engage the capabilities of modern smart meters which can monitor and report power quality events (e.g. voltage deviations). Subsequently a grid operator can follow up with actions in an affected area in order to analyse problems e.g. by increasing the sampling rate. Although the smart meter precision is not comparable to the precision of a commercial network analyser, in large numbers distributed smart meters forming a mesh network can provide sufficient information for power quality in an area while keeping the monitoring overhead and the cost low. It is shown that by using modern interoperable wireless communication protocols and Internet services, the proposed system has a high degree of flexibility, and good potential for scalability and resilience. The preliminary evaluation shows that the smart metering infrastructure, if coupled with suitable information and communication tools, can offer innovative value-added services and enhance existing business processes.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last years service-oriented architectures have been extensively used to enable seamless interaction and integration among the various heterogeneous systems and devices found in modern factories. The emerging Industrial Automation Systems are increasingly utilising them. In the cloud-based vision of IMC-AESOP such technologies take an even more key role as they empower the backbone of the new concepts and approaches under development. Here we report about the investigations and assessments performed to find answers to some of the major questions that arise as key when technologies have to be selected and used in an industrial context utilizing Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based distributed large-scale process monitoring and control system. Aspects of integration, real-timeness, distributeness, event-based interaction, service-enablement, etc., are approached from different angles and some of the promising technologies are analysed and assessed.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceeding IEE IECON 2012. - Montreal : IEEE Communications Society. ; , s. 5803-5808
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a SOA-based system the applications are organized in a manner such that interoperable services can be used from different domains. In a process industry context, different domains can refer to, for example, process instrumentation and monitoring, execution of process control, data acquisition, etc. Large process industry systems are a complex and potentially very large sets of multi-disciplinary, heterogeneous, networked distributed systems. Current industrial process control systems are typically vendor specific; in addition the different domains are associated with different layers, different standards and different technologies. In the paper the authors report about the investigations and assessments performed to find answers for four major critical questions that arise as key when technologies have to be selected and used in a true Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based distributed large scale Process Monitoring and Control system: (1) Real-time SOA (what are the limits of bringing SOA into high performance control loops?); (2) Management of large scale industrial distributed control systems (is it feasible to manage up to tens of thousands of service-oriented devices?); (3) Distributed event-based systems are asynchronous (what are the limits compared to traditional periodic scanning systems?) and (4) Service specification (which semantics are the most suitable for specifying process control and monitoring services?).

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 5770-5775
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The last years we are witnessing of rapid advances in the industrial automation domain, mainly driven by business needs towards agility and supported by new disruptive tech- nologies. Future factories will rely on multi-system interactions and collaborative cross-layer management and automation ap- proaches. Such a factory, configured and managed from archi- tectural and behavioural viewpoints, under the service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm is virtualized by services exposed by its key components (both HW and SW). One of the main results of this virtualization is that the factory is transformed into a ”cloud of services”, where dynamic resource allocation and interactions take place. This paper presents a view on such architecture, its specification, the main motivation and considerations, as well as the preliminary services it may need to support.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE 16TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INDUSTRIAL INFORMATICS (INDIN). - : IEEE. - 9781538648292 - 9781538648308 ; , s. 61-66
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Agent-technologies have been used for higher-level decision making in addition to carrying out lower-level automation and control functions in industrial systems. Recent research has identified a number of architectural patterns for the use of agents in industrial automation systems but these practices vary in several ways, including how closely agents are coupled with physical systems and their control functions. Such practices may play a pivotal role in the Cyber-Physical System integration and interaction. Hence, there is a clear need for a common set of criteria for assessing available practices and identifying a best-fit practice for a given industrial use case. Unfortunately, no such common criteria exist currently. This work proposes an assessment criteria approach as well as a methodology to enable the use case based selection of a best practice for integrating agents and industrial systems. The software product quality model proposed by the ISO/IEC 25010 family of standards is used as starting point and is put in the industrial automation context. Subsequently, the proposed methodology is applied, and a survey of experts in the domain is carried out, in order to reveal some insights on the key characteristics of the subject matter.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INDUSTRIAL CYBER PHYSICAL SYSTEMS (ICPS 2019). - : IEEE. - 9781538685006 ; , s. 17-22
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rapid technology advances and increasing digitalization bring new opportunities but also put new challenges to modern production systems. Industrial agent concepts and technologies can be used to address the needs of modern Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). To do so, their interplay, especially in industrial settings, needs to be better understood and assessed. Key directions for investigations that are relevant for industrial agent based CPPS are analyzed in this work, mainly the design patterns, interfaces between agents and CPPS, metrics to evaluate the quality of agent based CPPS, and distributed intelligence implemented in or by agents. Although efforts exist both in agent and CPPS domains, their amalgamation still has several aspects that are under-investigated, especially when considering large-scale systems of CPPS, and the proposed four directions discussed in this work, seem promising to address several of the key underlying challenges.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Computers in industry (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0166-3615 .- 1872-6194. ; 91, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The industrial domain is increasingly depending on the rapid technological advances, and to utilize it, new competencies will need to be acquired by the employees in order to strive towards innovation and business success. In this new context, under also the prism of globalization, the rules of competition are redefined, and competent labor is the deciding factor. Especially in fast-paced knowledge-based economies, there is greater dependence on knowledge, information and high employee competency levels, which also play a key role in innovation. It is therefore in the interest of both corporations and individual employees to not only retain existing knowledge, but continuously enhance it, by expanding it and utilizing it more efficiently. Competent people are the key to future success and offer organizations their only sustainable competitive advantage. Among the plethora of available tools to enhance employee competencies, massive open online courses (MOOCs) are an emerging phenomenon. They have taken the world by storm and recently they also started penetrating the corporate environments. This work focuses exactly on this white-spot area i.e., the relationship of MOOC-empowered employee competencies and innovation. A model is proposed, empirical data is collected via a survey, and is statistically analyzed. Initial results indicate a positive contribution of MOOC related factors such as culture, knowledge, communication, technology, and cost to innovation in modern enterprises. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. • Self-Driving Car Acceptance and the Role of Ethics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on engineering management. - 0018-9391 .- 1558-0040. ; 67:2, s. 252-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mass availability of self-driving cars is ante portas and independent of their sophistication, unavoidable fatal accidents will occur where the car will have to take life and death decisions. However, there is a knowledge gap, since the impact, that the ethical frameworks (used in the car's decision-making process) have on the overall acceptance of self-driving cars, is not well investigated. This paper addresses the key question: In the scope of unavoidable accidents, what is the effect of different ethical frameworks governing self-driving car decision-making, on their acceptance? This quantitative positivist research investigates the link of selected ethical frameworks, i.e., utilitarianism, deontology, relativism, absolutism (monism), and pluralism, to the acceptance of self-driving cars. It is hypothesized that they have an impact on the acceptance of the self-driving cars, and a model linking them to it is proposed and assessed. All five selected ethical frameworks investigated are found to have an effect on self-driving car acceptance, which implies actions for several involved stakeholders as these may be a deciding factor for the success or failure of the self-driving car market introduction.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Artificial Intelligence and Law. - : Springer. - 0924-8463 .- 1572-8382. ; 30, s. 93-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will have a profound impact on society as they will interfere with the people and their interactions. Intelligent autonomous robots, independent if they are humanoid/anthropomorphic or not, will have a physical presence, make autonomous decisions, and interact with all stakeholders in the society, in yet unforeseen manners. The symbiosis with such sophisticated robots may lead to a fundamental civilizational shift, with far-reaching effects as philosophical, legal, and societal questions on consciousness, citizenship, rights, and legal entity of robots are raised. The aim of this work is to understand the broad scope of potential issues pertaining to law and society through the investigation of the interplay of law, robots, and society via different angles such as law, social, economic, gender, and ethical perspectives. The results make it evident that in an era of symbiosis with intelligent autonomous robots, the law systems, as well as society, are not prepared for their prevalence. Therefore, it is now the time to start a multi-disciplinary stakeholder discussion and derive the necessary policies, frameworks, and roadmaps for the most eminent issues.

    • A coherent architectural framework is needed to be able to cope with the imposed requirements and realise the vision for the industrial automation domain. Future factories will rely on multi-system interactions and collaborative cross-layer management and automation approaches. The service-oriented architecture paradigm empowered by virtualisation of resources acts as a lighthouse. More specifically by integrating Web services, Internet technologies, Cloud systems and the power of the Internet of Things, we can create a framework that has the possibility of empowering seamless integration and interaction among the heterogeneous stakeholders in the future industrial automation domain. We propose here a service architecture that attempts to cover the basic needs for monitoring, management, data handling, integration, etc., by taking into consideration the disruptive technologies and concepts that could empower future industrial systems

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The initiative AESOP (ArchitecturE for Service-Oriented Process-Monitoring and - Control) envisions a Service-oriented Architecture approach for monitoring and control of Process Control applications (batch and continuous process). Large process industry systems are a complex (potentially very large) set of (frequently) multi-disciplinary, connected, heterogeneous systems that function as a complex system of which the components are themselves systems. The future "Perfect Plant" will be able to seamlessly collaborate and enable monitoring and control information flow in a cross-layer way. As such the different systems will be part of an SCADA/DCS ecosystem, where components can be dynamically added or removed and dynamic discovery enables the on-demand information combination and collaboration. All current and future systems will be able to share information in a timely and open manner, enabling an enterprise-wide system of systems that will dynamically evolve based on business needs. The SOA-based approach proposed by AESOP can, on one hand, simplify the integration of monitoring and control systems on application layer. On the other hand, the networking technologies that are already known to control engineers could also simplify the inclusion of or migration from existing solutions and integration of the next generation SCADA and DCS systems at network layer

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial agent technologies have been integrated in key elements coupling industrial systems and software logic, which is an important issue in the design of cyber-physical systems. Although several efforts have been tried out over the last decades to integrate software agents with physical hardware devices, and some commonalities can be observed among the existing practices, there is no uniform way overall. This work presents an empirical survey of existing practices in three application area, namely factory automation, power & energy systems and building automation. It identifies pertaining common issues and discusses how they integrate low level automation functions by utilizing industrial agents. The surveyed practices reveal high diversity, customized traditional integration focusing mostly on I/O functions, without security, and an overall approach that is mostly coupled rather than embedded.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) is a key concept in Industry 4.0, acting as a backbone to develop smart processes, machines and products. Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) is a suitable paradigm for the realization of such industrial CPS systems, supporting the distribution of intelligence and decision-making capabilities among a network of autonomous and cooperative agents. Standardization is a key factor for the acceptance of industrial CPS and agent-based systems, assuming a critical role in establishing specifications for the hardware integration, which is an important requirement for industrial agents. This paper focuses on the recently established IEEE 2660.1-2020 standard that defines a recommended practice to solve the interface problem when applying industrial agents, namely integrating intelligent software agents with low-level automation devices in the CPS context. The paper illustrates the applicability of the standard in three different application scenarios related to power and energy systems, factory automation and building automation, and discusses future directions in terms of standardization in the field of industrial agents, that are required for its wider adoption in the realization of industrial CPS solutions.

  • 2011. - 17
  • Ingår i: Energy-Efficient Computing and Networking. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. ; 54, s. 187-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Distributed generation of energy coming from various vendors, even private homes, is a big challenge for tomorrows power management systems that, unlike today, will not dispatch energy centrally or under central control. On the contrary, the production, distribution and management of energy will be treated and optimized in a distributed manner using local data. Even today, parts of the power system are highly nonlinear with fast changing dynamics. It is hard to predict disturbances and undertake countermeasures on time. In existing approaches electricity is distributed to the final users according to its expected estimated demand. Such non-dynamic approaches, are difficult to evolve and can not accommodate rapid changes in the system. By having a cross-layer and open information flow among the different actors involved we can make better and more timely predictions, and inject new dynamics in the system that will lead to better energy management and achieve better energy savings. The NOBEL project is building an energy brokerage system with which individual energy prosumers can communicate their energy needs directly to both large-scale and small-scale energy producers, thereby making energy use more efficient.

    • The increasing need for more adaptive production environments is a big motivator for the adoption of agent-based technologies in industrial systems, as they provide better mechanisms for handling dynamically and intelligently various kinds of production disturbances. Unlike with the utilization of most conventional automation languages, the use of agents enables, in an easy way, the setup of dynamic and autonomous adaptive processes to handle large and complex engineering system functions and interactions. Agent-technologies in cyber-physical systems contexts require at some point integration with automation controllers. However, most commonly available and used agent system implementations in the industry were not designed for hard real-time control use cases, and do not utilize real-time operating systems or dedicated hardware. Hence, they cannot match the hard-real-time performance of automation controllers. This work provides some insights on the performance that can be achieved with agent-based approaches that integrate with low-level automation system functions. It considers the performance of the agent-based practices in light of non-real-time dedicated hardware or operating systems. The results show that agents are well suited for the majority of soft-real-time control applications.

  • Process-Based Design and Integration of Wireless Sensor Network Applications
  • 2012. - 13
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSNs) are distributed sensor and actuator networks that monitor and control real-world phenomena, enabling the integration of the physical with the virtual world. They are used in domains like building automation, control systems, remote healthcare, etc., which are all highly process-driven. Today, tools and insights of Business Process Modeling (BPM) are not used to model WSN logic, as BPM focuses mostly on the coordination of people and IT systems and neglects the integration of embedded IT. WSN development still requires significant special-purpose, low-level, and manual coding of process logic. By exploiting similarities between WSN applications and business processes, this work aims to create a holistic system enabling the modeling and execution of executable processes that integrate, coordinate, and control WSNs. Concretely, we present a WSN-specific extension for Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) and a compiler that transforms the extended BPMN models into WSN-specific code to distribute process execution over both a WSN and a standard business process engine. The developed tool-chain allows modeling of an independent control loop for the WSN.
