  • Study of excited Ξ baryons with the P¯ ANDA detector
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of baryon excitation spectra provides insight into the inner structure of baryons. So far, most of the world-wide efforts have been directed towards N∗ and Δ spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the study of the double and triple strange baryon spectrum provides independent information to the N∗ and Δ spectra. The future antiproton experiment P¯ANDA will provide direct access to final states containing a Ξ¯ Ξ pair, for which production cross sections up to μb are expected in p¯p reactions. With a luminosity of L= 10 31 cm- 2 s- 1 in the first phase of the experiment, the expected cross sections correspond to a production rate of ∼106events/day. With a nearly 4 π detector acceptance, P¯ANDA will thus be a hyperon factory. In this study, reactions of the type p¯p → Ξ¯ +Ξ∗ - as well as p¯p → Ξ¯ ∗ +Ξ- with various decay modes are investigated. For the exclusive reconstruction of the signal events a full decay tree fit is used, resulting in reconstruction efficiencies between 3 and 5%. This allows high statistics data to be collected within a few weeks of data taking.

  • Mutant superoxide dismutase-1 indistinguishable from wild-type causes ALS
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP): Policy B - Oxford Open Option B. - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 21:16, s. 3568-3574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A reason for screening amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients for mutations in the superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) gene is the opportunity to find novel mutations with properties that can give information on pathogenesis. A novel c.352Cgreater thanG (L117V) SOD1 mutation was found in two Syrian ALS families living in Europe. The disease showed unusually low penetrance and slow progression. In erythrocytes, the total SOD1 activity, as well as specific activity of the mutant protein, was equal in carriers of the mutation and family controls lacking SOD1 mutations. The structural stabilities of the L117V mutant and wild-type SOD1 under denaturing conditions were likewise equal, but considerably lower than that of murine SOD1. As analyzed with an ELISA specific for misfolded SOD1 species, no differences were found in the content of misfolded SOD1 protein between extracts of fibroblasts from wild-type controls and from an L117V patient. In contrast, elevated levels of misfolded SOD1 protein were found in fibroblasts from ALS patients carrying seven other mutations in the SOD1 gene. We conclude that mutations in SOD1 that result in a fully stable protein are associated with low disease penetrance for ALS and may be found in cases of apparently sporadic ALS. Wild-type human SOD1 is moderately stable, and was found here to be within the stability range of ALS-causing SOD1 variants, lending support to the hypothesis that wild-type SOD1 could be more generally involved in ALS pathogenesis.

  • Near-field Localization with a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Acting as Lens
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications. - 1550-3607. ; June 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exploiting wavefront curvature enables localization with limited infrastructure and hardware complexity. With the introduction of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), new opportunities arise, in particular when the RIS is functioning as a lens receiver. We investigate the localization of a transmitter using a RIS-based lens in close proximity to a single receive antenna element attached to reception radio frequency chain. We perform a Fisher information analysis, evaluate the impact of different lens configurations, and propose a two-stage localization algorithm. Our results indicate that positional beamforming can lead to better performance when a priori location information is available, while random beamforming is preferred when a priori information is lacking. Our simulation results for a moderate size lens operating at 28 GHz showcased that decimeter-level accuracy can be attained within 3 meters to the lens.

  • RIS-Enabled and Access-Point-Free Simultaneous Radio Localization and Mapping
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - 1558-2248 .- 1536-1276. ; 23:4, s. 3344-3360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the upcoming sixth generation (6G) of wireless communication systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are regarded as one of the promising technological enablers, which can provide programmable signal propagation. Therefore, simultaneous radio localization and mapping (SLAM) with RISs appears as an emerging research direction within the 6G ecosystem. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of RIS-enabled radio SLAM for wireless operation without the intervention of access points (APs). We first design the RIS phase profiles leveraging prior information for the user equipment (UE), such that they uniformly illuminate the angular sector where the UE is probabilistically located. Second, we modify the marginal Poisson multi-Bernoulli SLAM filter and estimate the UE state and landmarks, which enables efficient mapping of the radio propagation environment. Third, we derive the theoretical Cramér-Rao lower bounds on the estimators for the channel parameters and the UE state. We finally evaluate the performance of the proposed method under scenarios with a limited number of transmissions, taking into account the channel coherence time. Our results demonstrate that the RIS enables solving the radio SLAM problem with zero APs, and that the consideration of the Doppler shift contributes to improving the UE speed estimates.

  • Arbitrary Beam Pattern Approximation via RISs with Measured Element Responses
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 Joint European Conference on Networks and Communications and 6G Summit, EuCNC/6G Summit 2022. ; , s. 506-511
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart radio environments (SREs) are seen as a key rising concept of next generation wireless networks, where propagation channels between transmitters and receivers are purposely controlled. One promising approach to achieve such channel flexibility relies on semi-passive reflective Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which can shape the bouncing multipath signals for enhancing communication quality of service, making localization feasible in adverse operating conditions, or reducing unwanted electromagnetic emissions. This paper introduces a generic framework that aims at optimizing the end-to-end precoder controlled by RISs, so that arbitrary beam patterns can be generated, given a predefined lookup table of RIS element-wise complex reflection coefficients. This method is validated and illustrated for different targeted beam patterns in both the far-field and the near-field regimes, while considering the prior characterization of real-life RIS hardware prototypes. These results show how, and to which extent, RIS configuration optimization can approximate the desired beams under realistic hardware limitations and low-complexity implementation practicability, or conversely, which RIS elements' lookup tables would be more suitable. The latter can provide useful guidelines for future RIS hardware designs.

  • Performance of RIS-aided near-field localization under beams approximation from real hardware characterization
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Eurasip Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. - 1687-1499 .- 1687-1472. ; 2023:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) has been showing promising potential in a variety of applications relying on Beyond-5G networks. RIS can indeed provide fine channel flexibility to improve communication quality of service (QoS) or restore localization capabilities in challenging operating conditions, while conventional approaches fail (e.g., due to insufficient infrastructure, severe radio obstructions). In this paper, we tackle a general low-complexity approach for optimizing the precoders that control such reflective surfaces under hardware constraints. More specifically, it allows the approximation of any desired beam pattern using a pre-characterized lookup table of feasible complex reflection coefficients for each RIS element. The proposed method is first evaluated in terms of beam fidelity for several examples of RIS hardware prototypes. Then, by means of a theoretical bounds analysis, we examine the impact of RIS beams approximation on the performance of near-field downlink positioning in non-line-of-sight conditions, while considering several RIS phase profiles (including directional, random and localization-optimal designs). Simulation results in a canonical scenario illustrate how the introduced RIS profile optimization scheme can reliably produce the desired RIS beams under realistic hardware limitations. They also highlight its sensitivity to both the underlying hardware characteristics and the required beam kinds in relation to the specificity of RIS-aided localization applications.
