    • Quasi-TEM H-plane horn is usually designed with hard sidewalls to achieve uniform field distribution, but the hard walls limits its bandwidth. Here, open side walls based on the ridge gap waveguide are used to generate the hard walls. The concept is demonstrated numerically by an initial study on an H-plane sector horn. The horn achieves wider bandwidth than dielectric-loaded hard sector horns and has higher gain than normal smooth metal wall sector horns of the same aperture size and length.

    • The bed of nails has been demonstrated to be very useful in the design of new confined gap waveguide appearing between parallel metal plates with texture, as well as for removing cavity modes in microstrip circuit packages. As the bed of nails is bulky at low frequencies due to the required height of the nails, a new version of this periodic structure is proposed herein, based on helices instead of nails. Thus, the bed of nails is replaced by a bed of springs. The bed of springs is much more compact for use at low frequencies, and its bandwidth turns out to be similar. Thus, the new spring mattress approach is more comfortable than the Fakirs bed of nails at low frequencies.

    • This work deals with the suppression of parallel plate and cavity modes in shielded microstrip circuits operating at the lower microwave frequency range. The suppression is achieved by using a lid made of zigzag wires printed periodically on narrow slices of ungrounded circuit boards, located vertically side by side. This structure is very compact both in periodicity and height, it suppresses cavity modes over about an octave 2: 1 bandwidth, and it does not interfere with the packaged microstrip circuit.

    • This paper presents a new type of narrow band filter with good electrical performance and manufacturing flexibility, based on the newly introduced groove gap waveguide technology. The designed third and fifth-order filters work at Ku band with 1% fractional bandwidth. These filter structures are manufactured with an allowable gap between two metal blocks, in such a way that there is no requirement for electrical contact and alignment between the blocks. This is a major manufacturing advantage compared to normal rectangular waveguide filters. The measured results of the manufactured filters show reasonably good agreement with the full-wave simulated results, without any tuning or adjustments.

    • We present two new types of ultra-wideband antennas for EMC measurements: the Eleven antenna and the self-grounded antenna. Both antennas have a compact size and can have multiple ports for flexibility in measurement tests. The radiation patterns of the antennas can be directional or of multi-beam. The antennas have a low manufacture cost and light weight, easy for installation, which is especially important for low frequency antennas.

    • We present a new compact wideband multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna—the double-sided 4-port arm-tapered self-grounded monopole array, briefly referred to as the butterfly antenna, in the communication. The antenna is very compact with low correlation between ports and high diversity gain. The genetic algorithm optimization scheme has been employed in the design. Simulation results have been verified against measurements. The measured reflection coefficients at all ports are below -7 dB over 0.5–9 GHz and below -4.5 dB over 0.4–0.5 GHz and 9–15 GHz. The measured correlation coefficients are below 0.4 over 0.4–15 GHz and lower than 0.1 in most of the frequency band. This new MIMO antenna is developed as a transmit antenna in reverberation chambers, and we believe that it will find more applications in other systems, such as micro base station antennas in wireless communication systems.

  • The PMC-Amended DB Boundary - A Canonical EBG Surface

    • Replacing realistic materials and structures by their ideal counterparts, canonical surfaces, is of great interest for initial and conceptual electromagnetic (EM) studies. The recently introduced DB boundary is defined by a set of simple boundary conditions forcing the normal components of the D- and B- fields to be zero at the boundary. We show that this DB boundary produces many 2-D scattering results that are similar to how practical so-called electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) surfaces behave within the bandgap. Still, it is not directly useable as a canonical EBG surface, because, as we demonstrate in this paper, it is incomplete, creating an anomaly for normal incidence which causes unphysical field solution for 3-D field problems. We have removed this anomaly by introducing the PMC-amended DB boundary. This works in the same way as a practically realized EBG surface for both 2-D and 3-D problems within the bandgap, and is therefore a canonical EBG surface.

    • The paper presents an efficient method for the design of printed microstrip circuit with packaging in mind, referred to as numerical prepackaging with a perfectly magnetic conductive (PMC) lid. The method comprises making the design including the packaging from the start by using a PMC lid, rather than first designing the open-aired circuit; and thereafter, considering the packaging effect and the often required retuning of the circuits themselves. The advantage is that no parallel plate modes can propagate between the perfect electric conductor (PEC) ground plane and the PMC lid plate if the spacing is smaller than an effective quarter of wavelength. This provides a limited computational volume so that the computation time is significantly reduced in the case of the finite element method (FEM) or the finite difference time domain method (FDTD). By using numerical packaging with PMC lid, the ideal PMC lid has to be realized afterwards e.g. by using a lid of nails, which is a minor task as compared to existing approaches.

    • After the use of the bed of nails for removing cavity modes in microstrip circuit packages, we propose herein a new version of this periodic structure, based on helices (springs) instead of nails. This new structure, named bed of springs, is much more compact, and this allows its use at low frequencies where the bed of nails is not suitable as it is too bulky due to the required height of the nails (pins). The bandwidth of the proposed structure turns out to be similar to the case of bed of nails. Parametric studies are presented as a design tool and a demonstrator is manufactured and measured.

    • In this paper, a novel compact integrated antennadiplexer for Frequency-division duplex low latency wireless backhaul links at E-band is presented. The proposed solution is designed in a multilayer architecture with each layer having different functional blocks. The layers have been stacked on top of each other without any electrical contact requirement between them. This is achieved by using packaging property of gap waveguide technology. A corporate-fed 16 x 16 slot array antenna is integrated with a 5th order diplexer. The simulated reflection coefficients arc better than-13 dB for both input ports in the designed passbands. The simulated realized gains at the middle of channel 1 (73.5 GHz) and channel 2 (83.5 GHz) are respectively 31.8 dBi and 32.9 dBi, obtaining a high isolation of 50 dB between the two input ports.

    • This paper presents the design and realization of a high data rate radio front-end module for point-to-point backhaul links at E-band. The design module consists of four vertically stacked unconnected metal layers without any galvanic and electrical contact requirements among the building blocks, by using gap waveguide technology. The module components are a high-gain array antenna, diplexer, and circuitry consisting of a transmitter (Tx) and a receiver (Rx) monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) on a carrier board, which is successfully integrated into one package with a novel architecture and a compact form. The diplexer consists of two direct-coupled cavity bandpass filters with channels at 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz with a measured return loss of 15 dB and an isolation greater than 50 dB. A wideband 16 x 16 slot array antenna with a measured gain of more than 31 dBi is used to provide high directivity. The measured results show that the packaged transmitter provides a conversion gain of 22 and 20 dB at 76 and 86 GHz, respectively, with an output power of 14 and 16 dBm at 1-dB gain compression point, at the same frequencies. The packaged receiver shows an average conversion gain of 20 dB at 71-76-GHz and 24 dB at 81-86-GHz bands. A real-time wireless data transmission is successfully demonstrated with a data rate of 8 Gbit/s using 32-quadrature amplitude modulated signal over 1.8-GHz channel bandwidth with spectral efficiency of 4.44 bit/s/Hz. The proposed radio front end provides the advantages of low loss, high efficiency, compact integration, and a simple mechanical assembly, which makes it a suitable solution for small-cell backhaul links.
