  • Simulating Miocene Warmth : Insights From an Opportunistic Multi-Model Ensemble (MioMIP1)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology. - 2572-4517 .- 2572-4525. ; 36:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Miocene epoch, spanning 23.03-5.33 Ma, was a dynamic climate of sustained, polar amplified warmth. Miocene atmospheric CO2 concentrations are typically reconstructed between 300 and 600 ppm and were potentially higher during the Miocene Climatic Optimum (16.75-14.5 Ma). With surface temperature reconstructions pointing to substantial midlatitude and polar warmth, it is unclear what processes maintained the much weaker-than-modern equator-to-pole temperature difference. Here, we synthesize several Miocene climate modeling efforts together with available terrestrial and ocean surface temperature reconstructions. We evaluate the range of model-data agreement, highlight robust mechanisms operating across Miocene modeling efforts and regions where differences across experiments result in a large spread in warming responses. Prescribed CO2 is the primary factor controlling global warming across the ensemble. On average, elements other than CO2, such as Miocene paleogeography and ice sheets, raise global mean temperature by similar to 2 degrees C, with the spread in warming under a given CO2 concentration (due to a combination of the spread in imposed boundary conditions and climate feedback strengths) equivalent to similar to 1.2 times a CO2 doubling. This study uses an ensemble of opportunity: models, boundary conditions, and reference data sets represent the state-of-art for the Miocene, but are inhomogeneous and not ideal for a formal intermodel comparison effort. Acknowledging this caveat, this study is nevertheless the first Miocene multi-model, multi-proxy comparison attempted so far. This study serves to take stock of the current progress toward simulating Miocene warmth while isolating remaining challenges that may be well served by community-led efforts to coordinate modeling and data activities within a common analytical framework.

  • Regional variability in peatland burning at mid-to high-latitudes during the Holocene
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Science Reviews. - : Elsevier. - 0277-3791 .- 1873-457X. ; 305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Northern peatlands store globally-important amounts of carbon in the form of partly decomposed plant detritus. Drying associated with climate and land-use change may lead to increased fire frequency and severity in peatlands and the rapid loss of carbon to the atmosphere. However, our understanding of the patterns and drivers of peatland burning on an appropriate decadal to millennial timescale relies heavily on individual site-based reconstructions. For the first time, we synthesise peatland macrocharcoal re-cords from across North America, Europe, and Patagonia to reveal regional variation in peatland burning during the Holocene. We used an existing database of proximal sedimentary charcoal to represent regional burning trends in the wider landscape for each region. Long-term trends in peatland burning appear to be largely climate driven, with human activities likely having an increasing influence in the late Holocene. Warmer conditions during the Holocene Thermal Maximum (similar to 9e6 cal. ka BP) were associated with greater peatland burning in North America's Atlantic coast, southern Scandinavia and the Baltics, and Patagonia. Since the Little Ice Age, peatland burning has declined across North America and in some areas of Europe. This decline is mirrored by a decrease in wider landscape burning in some, but not all sub-regions, linked to fire-suppression policies, and landscape fragmentation caused by agricultural expansion. Peatlands demonstrate lower susceptibility to burning than the wider landscape in several instances, probably because of autogenic processes that maintain high levels of near-surface wetness even during drought. Nonetheless, widespread drying and degradation of peatlands, particularly in Europe, has likely increased their vulnerability to burning in recent centuries. Consequently, peatland restoration efforts are important to mitigate the risk of peatland fire under a changing climate. Finally, we make recommendations for future research to improve our understanding of the controls on peatland fires.(c) 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. • A Model-Data Comparison of the Hydrological Response to Miocene Warmth : Leveraging the MioMIP1 Opportunistic Multi-Model Ensemble

    • The Miocene (23.03-5.33 Ma) is recognized as a period with close to modern-day paleogeography, yet a much warmer climate. With large uncertainties in future hydroclimate projections, Miocene conditions illustrate a potential future analog for the Earth system. A recent opportunistic Miocene Model Intercomparison Project 1 (MioMIP1) focused on synthesizing published Miocene climate simulations and comparing them with available temperature reconstructions. Here, we build on this effort by analyzing the hydrological cycle response to Miocene forcings across early-to-middle (E2MMIO; 20.03-11.6 Ma) and middle-to-late Miocene (M2LMIO; 11.5-5.33 Ma) simulations with CO2 concentrations ranging from 200 to 850 ppm and providing a model-data comparison against available precipitation reconstructions. We find global precipitation increases by similar to 2.1 and 2.3% per degree of warming for E2MMIO and M2LMIO simulations, respectively. Models generally agree on a wetter than modern-day tropics; mid and high-latitude, however, do not agree on the sign of subtropical precipitation changes with warming. Global monsoon analysis suggests most monsoon regions, except the North American Monsoon, experience higher precipitation rates under warmer conditions. Model-data comparison shows that mean annual precipitation is underestimated by the models regardless of CO2 concentration, particularly in the mid- to high-latitudes. This suggests that the models may not be (a) resolving key processes driving the hydrological cycle response to Miocene boundary conditions and/or (b) other boundary conditions or processes not considered here are critical to reproducing Miocene hydroclimate. This study highlights the challenges in modeling and reconstructing the Miocene hydrological cycle and serves as a baseline for future coordinated MioMIP efforts. This study looks at Earth's hydrological cycle during the Miocene (23-5 million years ago). During this period, the Earth's climate was 3-7 degrees C warmer than today, with carbon dioxide (CO2) estimates ranging between 400 and 850 ppm. Understanding how the hydrological cycle responded during warmer climate conditions can give us insight into what might happen as the Earth gets warmer. We analyzed a suite of Miocene paleoclimate simulations with different CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere and compared them against fossil plant data, which gives an estimate of the average annual rainfall during the period. We found that during the Miocene global rainfall increased by about 2.1%-2.3% for each degree of warming. The models agree that the tropics, mid- and high-latitude, became wetter than they are today but have lower agreement on whether subtropical areas got wetter or drier as they warmed. Compared to proxies, models consistently underestimated how much rain fell in a year, especially in the mid- to high-latitude. This illustrates the challenges in reconstructing the Miocene's hydrological cycle and suggests that the models might not fully capture the range of uncertainties associated with changes in the hydrological cycle due to warming or other factors that differentiated the Miocene. A multi-model comparison of the hydrological cycle in early-to-middle and middle-to-late Miocene simulations is conductedModels generally agree on wetter than modern tropics, middle and high latitudes, but not on the sign of subtropical precipitation changesModel-data comparison shows mean annual precipitation is underestimated by the models, particularly in the mid- to high-latitudes

  • Slow Noncollinear Coulomb Scattering in the Vicinity of the Dirac Point in Graphene
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114 .- 0031-9007. ; 117:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Coulomb scattering dynamics in graphene in energetic proximity to the Dirac point is investigated by polarization resolved pump-probe spectroscopy and microscopic theory. Collinear Coulomb scattering rapidly thermalizes the carrier distribution in k directions pointing radially away from the Dirac point. Our study reveals, however, that, in almost intrinsic graphene, full thermalization in all directions relying on noncollinear scattering is much slower. For low photon energies, carrier-optical-phonon processes are strongly suppressed and Coulomb mediated noncollinear scattering is remarkably slow, namely on a ps time scale. This effect is very promising for infrared and THz devices based on hot carrier effects.

  • Enhancement of Exciton-Phonon Scattering from Monolayer to Bilayer WS2

    • Layered transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit the emergence of a direct bandgap at the monolayer limit along with pronounced excitonic effects. In these materials, interaction with phonons is the dominant mechanism that limits the exciton coherence lifetime. Exciton-phonon interaction also facilitates energy and momentum relaxation, and influences exciton diffusion under most experimental conditions. However, the fundamental changes in the exciton-phonon interaction are not well understood as the material undergoes the transition from a direct to an indirect bandgap semiconductor. Here, we address this question through optical spectroscopy and microscopic theory. In the experiment, we study room-temperature statistics of the exciton line width for a large number of mono- A nd bilayer WS2 samples. We observe a systematic increase in the room-temperature line width of the bilayer compared to the monolayer of 50 meV, corresponding to an additional scattering rate of â0.1 fs-1. We further address both phonon emission and absorption processes by examining the temperature dependence of the width of the exciton resonances. Using a theoretical approach based on many-body formalism, we are able to explain the experimental results and establish a microscopic framework for exciton-phonon interactions that can be applied to naturally occurring and artificially prepared multilayer structures.

    • Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides are direct-gap semiconductors with strong light-matter and Coulomb interactions. The latter accounts for tightly bound excitons, which dominate their optical properties. Besides the optically accessible bright excitons, these systems exhibit a variety of dark excitonic states. They are not visible in the optical spectra, but can strongly influence the coherence lifetime and the linewidth of the emission from bright exciton states. Here, we investigate the microscopic origin of the excitonic coherence lifetime in two representative materials (WS2 and MoSe2) through a study combining microscopic theory with spectroscopic measurements. We show that the excitonic coherence lifetime is determined by phonon-induced intravalley scattering and intervalley scattering into dark excitonic states. In particular, in WS2, we identify exciton relaxation processes involving phonon emission into lower-lying dark states that are operative at all temperatures.

    • Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides are direct gap semiconductors, which have attracted much attention in the recent past. Due to a strong Coulomb interaction, they possess strongly bound electron-hole pairs, with binding energies of hundreds of meV which is an order of magnitude larger than in conventional materials. Here, we investigate the microscopic origin of the homogeneous linewidth and coherence lifetime of excitonic resonances in monolayer molybdenum disulfide, taking exciton phonon scattering and radiative recombination into account. We find a superlinear increasing homogeneous linewidth from 2 meV at 5K to 14 meV at room temperature corresponding to a coherence lifetime of 160 fs and 25 fs.

    • The Miocene epoch (23.03–5.33 Ma) was a time interval of global warmth, relative to today. Continental configurations and mountain topography transitioned towards modern conditions, and many flora and fauna evolved into the same taxa that exist today. Miocene climate was dynamic: long periods of early and late glaciation bracketed a ∼2 Myr greenhouse interval – the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO). Floras, faunas, ice sheets, precipitation, pCO2, and ocean and atmospheric circulation mostly (but not ubiquitously) covaried with these large changes in climate. With higher temperatures and moderately higher pCO2 (∼400–600 ppm), the MCO has been suggested as a particularly appropriate analogue for future climate scenarios, and for assessing the predictive accuracy of numerical climate models – the same models that are used to simulate future climate. Yet, Miocene conditions have proved difficult to reconcile with models. This implies either missing positive feedbacks in the models, a lack of knowledge of past climate forcings, or the need for re‐interpretation of proxies, which might mitigate the model‐data discrepancy. Our understanding of Miocene climatic, biogeochemical, and oceanic changes on broad spatial and temporal scales is still developing. New records documenting the physical, chemical, and biotic aspects of the Earth system are emerging, and together provide a more comprehensive understanding of this important time interval. Here we review the state‐of‐the‐art in Miocene climate, ocean circulation, biogeochemical cycling, ice sheet dynamics, and biotic adaptation research as inferred through proxy observations and modelling studies.

  • 2017

    • Excitons dominate the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Besides optically accessible bright exciton states, TMDs exhibit also a multitude of optically forbidden dark excitons. Here, we show that efficient exciton-phonon scattering couples bright and dark states and gives rise to an asymmetric excitonic line shape. The observed asymmetry can be traced back to phonon-induced sidebands that are accompanied by a polaron redshift. We present a joint theory-experiment study investigating the microscopic origin of these sidebands in different TMD materials taking into account intra and intervalley scattering channels opened by optical and acoustic phonons. The gained insights contribute to a better understanding of the optical fingerprint of these technologically promising nanomaterials.

  • Global and Zonal-Mean Hydrological Response to Early Eocene Warmth
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology. - 2572-4517 .- 2572-4525. ; 38:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earth's hydrological cycle is expected to intensify in response to global warming, with a wet-gets-wetter, dry-gets-drier response anticipated over the ocean. Subtropical regions (similar to 15 degrees-30 degrees N/S) are predicted to become drier, yet proxy evidence from past warm climates suggests these regions may be characterized by wetter conditions. Here we use an integrated data-modeling approach to reconstruct global and zonal-mean rainfall patterns during the early Eocene (similar to 56-48 million years ago). The Deep-Time Model Intercomparison Project (DeepMIP) model ensemble indicates that the mid-(30 degrees-60 degrees N/S) and high-latitudes (>60 degrees N/S) are characterized by a thermodynamically dominated hydrological response to warming and overall wetter conditions. The tropical band (0 degrees-15 degrees N/S) is also characterized by wetter conditions, with several DeepMIP models simulating narrowing of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone. However, the latter is not evident from the proxy data. The subtropics are characterized by negative precipitation-evaporation anomalies (i.e., drier conditions) in the DeepMIP models, but there is surprisingly large inter-model variability in mean annual precipitation (MAP). Intriguingly, we find that models with weaker meridional temperature gradients (e.g., CESM, GFDL) are characterized by a reduction in subtropical moisture divergence, leading to an increase in MAP. These model simulations agree more closely with our new proxy-derived precipitation reconstructions and other key climate metrics and imply that the early Eocene was characterized by reduced subtropical moisture divergence. If the meridional temperature gradient was even weaker than suggested by those DeepMIP models, circulation-induced changes may have outcompeted thermodynamic changes, leading to wetter subtropics. This highlights the importance of accurately reconstructing zonal temperature gradients when reconstructing past rainfall patterns. As the world warms, the atmosphere is able to hold more moisture however, this moisture will not fall evenly across the globe. Some regions are expected to become wetter, whereas other regions will become drier. This is the basis of the familiar paradigm wet-gets-wetter, dry-gets-drier and is largely supported by future model projections. However, evidence from the geological record contradicts this hypothesis and suggests that a warmer world could be characterized by wetter (rather than drier) subtropics. Here, we use an integrated data-modeling approach to investigate the hydrological response to warming during an ancient warm interval (the early Eocene, 56-48 million years ago). We show that models with weaker latitudinal temperature gradients are characterized by a reduction in subtropical moisture divergence. However, this was not sufficient to induce subtropical wetting. If the meridional temperature gradient was weaker than suggested by the models, circulation-induced changes may have lead to wetter subtropics. This work shows that the latitudinal temperature gradient is a key factor that influences hydroclimate in the subtropics, especially in past warm climates.

    • The ultrafast dynamics of hot carriers in graphene are key to both understanding of fundamental carrier-carrier interactions and carrier-phonon relaxation processes in two-dimensional materials, and understanding of the physics underlying novel high-speed electronic and optoelectronic devices. Many recent experiments on hot carriers using terahertz spectroscopy and related techniques have interpreted the variety of observed signals within phenomenological frameworks, and sometimes invoke extrinsic effects such as disorder. Here, we present an integrated experimental and theoretical programme, using ultrafast timeresolved terahertz spectroscopy combined with microscopic modelling, to systematically investigate the hot-carrier dynamics in a wide array of graphene samples having varying amounts of disorder and with either high or low doping levels. The theory reproduces the observed dynamics quantitatively without the need to invoke any fitting parameters, phenomenological models or extrinsic effects such as disorder. We demonstrate that the dynamics are dominated by the combined effect of efficient carrier-carrier scattering, which maintains a thermalized carrier distribution, and carrier-optical-phonon scattering, which removes energy from the carrier liquid.

    • Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered considerable interest in recent years owing to their layer thickness-dependent optoelectronic properties. In monolayer TMDs, the large carrier effective masses, strong quantum confinement, and reduced dielectric screening lead to pronounced exciton resonances with remarkably large binding energies and coupled spin and valley degrees of freedom (valley excitons). Coherent control of valley excitons for atomically thin optoelectronics and valleytronics requires understanding and quantifying sources of exciton decoherence. In this work, we reveal how exciton-exciton and exciton-phonon scattering influence the coherent quantum dynamics of valley excitons in monolayer TMDs, specifically tungsten diselenide (WSe2), using two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Excitation-density and temperature dependent measurements of the homogeneous linewidth (inversely proportional to the optical coherence time) reveal that exciton-exciton and exciton-phonon interactions are significantly stronger compared to quasi-2D quantum wells and 3D bulk materials. The residual homogeneous linewidth extrapolated to zero excitation density and temperature is 1:6 meV (equivalent to a coherence time of 0.4 ps), which is limited only by the population recombination lifetime in this sample. • The band-edge optical response of transition metal dichalcogenides, an emerging class of atomically thin semiconductors, is dominated by tightly bound excitons localized at the corners of the Brillouin zone (valley excitons). A fundamental yet unknown property of valley excitons in these materials is the intrinsic homogeneous linewidth, which reflects irreversible quantum dissipation arising from system (exciton) and bath (vacuum and other quasiparticles) interactions and determines the timescale during which excitons can be coherently manipulated. Here we use optical two-dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy to measure the exciton homogeneous linewidth in monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe 2). The homogeneous linewidth is found to be nearly two orders of magnitude narrower than the inhomogeneous width at low temperatures. We evaluate quantitatively the role of exciton-exciton and exciton-phonon interactions and population relaxation as linewidth broadening mechanisms. The key insights reported here - strong many-body effects and intrinsically rapid radiative recombination - are expected to be ubiquitous in atomically thin semiconductors.

    • Low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) of hBN-encapsulated monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe2) shows a multitude of sharp emission peaks below the bright exciton. Some of them have been recently identified as phonon sidebands of momentum-dark states. However, the exciton dynamics behind the emergence of these sidebands has not been revealed yet. In this joint theory-experiment study, we theoretically predict and experimentally observe time-resolved PL, providing microscopic insights into the thermalization of hot excitons formed after optical excitation. In very good agreement between theory and experiment, we demonstrate a spectral red-shift of phonon sidebands on a time scale of tens of picoseconds, reflecting the phonon-driven thermalization of hot excitons in momentum-dark states. Furthermore, we predict the emergence of a transient phonon sideband that vanishes in the stationary PL. The obtained microscopic insights are applicable to a broad class of 2D materials with multiple exciton valleys.

    • The influence of transverse relaxation on the resonance soliton (2 pi hyperbolic-secant pulse) in solids is considered. It is shown that memory effects can be considered in terms of generalized non-Markovian optical Bloch equations. The equations of self-induced transparency with a memory function are presented. Explicit forms for the first-order effects of this relaxation on the frequency shift and the pulse height of a resonant 2 pi soliton in solids are given and discussed. It is shown that memory effects do lead to a qualitative change in the dynamics of the influence of transverse relaxations on a 2 pi pulse in comparison to the McCall-Hahn theory and others. The dynamics of the changes of the inverse width of the pulse are obtained in both the Markovian and the non-Markovian cases with realistic parameters that can be achieved in current experiments.

    • Large spin-orbit coupling in combination with circular dichroism allows access to spin-polarized and valley-polarized states in a controlled way in transition metal dichalcogenides. The promising application in spin-valleytronics devices requires a thorough understanding of intervalley coupling mechanisms, which determine the lifetime of spin and valley polarizations. Here we present a joint theory-experiment study shedding light on the Dexter-like intervalley coupling. We reveal that this mechanism couples A and B excitonic states in different valleys, giving rise to an efficient intervalley transfer of coherent exciton populations. We demonstrate that the valley polarization vanishes and is even inverted for A excitons, when the B exciton is resonantly excited and vice versa. Our theoretical findings are supported by energy-resolved and valley-resolved pump-probe experiments and also provide an explanation for the recently measured up-conversion in photoluminescence. The gained insights might help to develop strategies to overcome the intrinsic limit for spin and valley polarizations.

    • Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit a remarkable exciton physics including bright and optically forbidden dark excitonic states. Here, we show how dark excitons can be experimentally revealed by probing the intraexcitonic 1s-2p transition. Distinguishing the optical response shortly after the excitation and after the exciton thermalization allows us to reveal the relative position of bright and dark excitons. We find both in theory and experiment a clear blueshift in the optical response demonstrating the transition of bright exciton populations into lower-lying dark excitonic states.

    • Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit a remarkably strong Coulomb interaction. This results in a fascinating many-particle physics including a variety of bright and dark excitonic states that determine optical and electronic properties of these materials. So far, the impact of dark states has remained literally in the dark to a large extent, since a measurement of these optically forbidden states is very challenging. Here we demonstrate a strategy to measure a direct fingerprint of dark states even in standard linear absorption spectroscopy. We present a microscopic study on bright and dark higher excitonic states in the presence of disorder for the exemplary material of tungsten disulfide (WS2). We show that the geometric phase cancels the degeneration of 2s and 2p states and that a significant disorder-induced coupling of these bright and dark states offers a strategy to circumvent optical selection rules. As a proof, we show a clear fingerprint of dark 2p states in the absorption spectrum of WS2. The predicted softening of optical selection rules through exciton-disorder coupling is of general nature and therefore applicable to related two-dimensional semiconductors.

    • A remarkable property of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is the possibility to selectively address single valleys by circularly polarized light. In the context of technological applications, it is very important to understand possible intervalley coupling mechanisms. Here, we show how the Dexter-like intervalley coupling mixes A and B states from opposite valleys leading to a significant broadening γB 1s of the B 1s exciton. The effect is much more pronounced in tungsten-based TMDs, where the coupling excitonic states are quasi-resonant. We calculate a ratio γB B 1s /γA B 1s ≈ 4.0, which is in good agreement with the experimentally measured value of 3.9 ± 0.7. In addition to the broadening effect, the Dexter-like intervalley coupling also leads to a considerable energy renormalization resulting in an increased energetic distance between A 1s and B 1s states.

    • The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) shows a multitude of emission peaks below the bright exciton line, and not all of them have been explained yet. Here, we study the emission traces of phonon-assisted recombinations of indirect excitons. To this end, we develop a microscopic theory describing simultaneous exciton, phonon, and photon interaction and including consistent many-particle dephasing. We explain the drastically different PL below the bright exciton in tungsten- and molybdenum-based materials as the result of different configurations of bright and momentum-dark states. In good agreement with experiments, our calculations predict that WSe2 exhibits clearly visible low-temperature PL signals stemming from the phonon-assisted recombination of momentum-dark K-K′ excitons.

    • Excitons, Coulomb-bound electron–hole pairs, are the fundamental excitations governing the optoelectronic properties of semiconductors. Although optical signatures of excitons have been studied extensively, experimental access to the excitonic wave function itself has been elusive. Using multidimensional photoemission spectroscopy, we present a momentum-, energy-, and time-resolved perspective on excitons in the layered semiconductor WSe2. By tuning the excitation wavelength, we determine the energy–momentum signature of bright exciton formation and its difference from conventional single-particle excited states. The multidimensional data allow to retrieve fundamental exciton properties like the binding energy and the exciton–lattice coupling and to reconstruct the real-space excitonic distribution function via Fourier transform. All quantities are in excellent agreement with microscopic calculations. Our approach provides a full characterization of the exciton properties and is applicable to bright and dark excitons in semiconducting materials, heterostructures, and devices. Key points: The full life cycle of excitons is recorded with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The real-space distribution of the excitonic wave function is visualized. • Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) hold promising potential forapplications in optoelectronics. Due to their direct band gap and the extraordinarily strong Coulomb interaction, TMDs exhibit efficient light-matter coupling and tightly bound excitons. Moreover, large spin orbit coupling in combination with circular dichroism allows for spin and valley selective optical excitation. As atomically thin materials, they are very sensitive to changes in the surrounding environment. This motivates a functionalization approach, where external molecules are adsorbed to the materials surface to tailor its optical properties. Here, we apply the density matrix theory to investigate the potential of non-covalently functionalized monolayer TMDs. Considering exemplary molecules with a strong dipole moment, we predict spectral redshifts and the appearance of an additional side peak in the absorption spectrum of functionalized TMDs. We show that the molecular characteristics, e.g. coverage, orientation and dipole moment, crucially influence the optical properties of TMDs, leaving a unique optical fingerprint in the absorption spectrum. Furthermore, we find that the molecular dipole moments open a channel for coherent intervalley coupling between the high-symmetry K and K' points which may create new possibilities for spin-valleytronics application.

    • The rapidly increasing use of sensors throughout different research disciplines and the demand for more efficient devices with less power consumption depends critically on the emergence of new sensor materials and novel sensor concepts. Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides have a huge potential for sensor development within a wide range of applications. Their optimal surface-to-volume ratio combined with strong light-matter interaction results in a high sensitivity to changes in their surroundings. Here, we present a highly efficient sensing mechanism to detect molecules based on dark excitons in these materials. We show that the presence of molecules with a dipole moment transforms dark states into bright excitons, resulting in an additional pronounced peak in easy accessible optical spectra. This effect exhibits a huge potential for sensor applications, since it offers an unambiguous optical fingerprint for the detection of molecules-in contrast to common sensing schemes relying on small peak shifts and intensity changes.

    • Placing a two-dimensional sheet of graphene in an external magnetic field the continuous electronic band structure is discretized due to Landau quantization. The resulting optical transitions are subject to a broadening, which can lead to a significant overlap of Landau levels. We investigate the possible microscopic processes that could cause a broadening of the corresponding peaks in the absorption spectrum of Landau-quantized graphene: (i) radiative decay, (ii) Coulomb interaction, (iii) optical phonons, (iv) acoustic phonons, and (v) impurities. Since recent experiments have shown that independent of the magnetic field the resolvable number of Landau levels is constant, we put a special focus on the dependence of the broadening on the external magnetic field B and the Landau level index n. Our calculations reveal the impurities to be the crucial broadening mechanism, where different regimes of well separated and densely spaced Landau levels need to be taken into account. Furthermore, carrier-carrier and carrier-phonon scattering give rise to a very specific dependence on the Landau level index n that has not been observed yet.

    • Permafrost thaw in northern peatlands often leads to increased methane (CH4) emissions, but the underlying controls responsible for increased emissions and the duration for which they persist have yet to be fully elucidated. We assessed how shifting environmental conditions affect microbial communities and the magnitude and stable isotopic signature (delta C-13) of CH4 emissions along a thermokarst bog transect in boreal western Canada. Thermokarst bogs develop following permafrost thaw when dry, elevated peat plateaus collapse and become saturated and dominated by Sphagnum mosses. We differentiated between a young and a mature thermokarst bog stage (similar to 30 and similar to 200 years since thaw, respectively). The young bog located along the thermokarst edge was wetter, warmer, and dominated by hydrophilic vegetation compared to the mature bog. Using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we show that microbial communities were distinct near the surface and converged with depth, but fewer differences remained down to the lowest depth (160 cm). Microbial community analysis and delta C-13 data from CH4 surface emissions and dissolved gas depth profiles show that hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis was the dominant pathway at both sites. However, mean delta C-13-CH4 signatures of both dissolved gas profiles and surface CH4 emissions were found to be iso-topically heavier in the young bog (-63 parts per thousand and -65 parts per thousand, respectively) compared to the mature bog (-69 parts per thousand and -75 parts per thousand, respectively), suggesting that acetoclastic methano-genesis was relatively more enhanced throughout the young bog peat profile. Furthermore, mean young bog CH4 emissions of 82 mg CH4 m(-2) d(-1) were similar to 3 times greater than the 32 mg CH4 m(-2) d(-1) observed in the mature bog. Our study suggests that interactions between the methano-genic community, hydrophilic vegetation, warmer temperatures, and saturated surface conditions enhance CH4 emissions in young thermokarst bogs but that these favourable conditions only persist for the initial decades after permafrost thaw.

    • In the identification of transparency challenges evolving from a discrepancy between needs, state-of-the-art, and experiences that will be discussed, the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) has utilized a broad range of approaches, including literature analysis, best practice analysis, chain analysis, work group discussions, expert discussions, surveys, web consultations, and simulation studies to reach results that serve the objectives. In this chapter, the focus is on the layer approach, the integrated view follows thereafter. The layer approach distinguishes between. a.upper levels linked to the recipients of transparency andb.lower levels linked to the actors in the food value chain and their production and distribution processes. The different layers identify different communication needs. The lowest level provides the ". infrastructure" for data communication. It is closely related to information technology and the identification of the path that a product takes from production to consumption. This is linked to the tracking and tracing functionality which makes it feasible to communicate additional information as "backpack" on the tracking and tracing information base. The next layer serves the collection of information about the various domains (food safety, food quality, chain integrity) of interest. This layer represents the classical information collection and communication approach. The third layer involves the transformation of information into signals or further to simple-to-understand messages like "this food is safe" which serve the transparency needs of the various stakeholders (consumers, enterprises, and policy) depending on the situation they are in (scenario).

Based on a microscopic and fully quantum-mechanical study of the coupled carrier, phonon, and photon dynamics in graphene, we present a strategy to obtain a long-lived gain: Integrating graphene into a high quality photonic crystal nanocavity and applying a high-dielectric substrate suppresses the nonradiative recombination channels and gives rise to pronounced coherent light emission. This suggests the design of graphene-based laser devices covering a broad spectral range.

    • We present a microscopic study on the impact of doping on the carrier dynamics in graphene, in particular focusing on its influence on the technologically relevant carrier multiplication in realistic, doped graphene samples. Treating the time- and momentum-resolved carrier-light, carrier-carrier, and carrier-phonon interactions on the same microscopic footing, the appearance of Auger-induced carrier multiplication up to a Fermi level of 300 meV is revealed. Furthermore, we show that doping favors the so-called hot carrier multiplication occurring within one band. Our results are directly compared to recent time-resolved ARPES measurements and exhibit an excellent agreement on the temporal evolution of the hot carrier multiplication for n- and p-doped graphene. The gained insights shed light on the ultrafast carrier dynamics in realistic, doped graphene samples.

    • The European Copernicus programme plans to install a constellation of multiple polar orbiting satellites (Copernicus Anthropogenic CO2 Monitoring Mission, CO2M mission) for observing atmospheric CO2 content with the aim to estimate fossil fuel CO2 emissions. We explore the impact of potential CO2M observations of column-averaged CO2 (XCO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and aerosols in a 200 × 200 km2 domain around Berlin. For the quantification of anticipated XCO2 random and systematic errors we developed and applied new error parameterisation formulae based on artificial neural networks. For the interpretation of these data, we further established a CCFFDAS modelling chain from parameters of emission models to XCO2 and NO2 observations to simulate the 24 h periods preceeding simulated CO2M overpasses over the study area. For one overpass in winter and one in summer, we present a number of assessments of observation impact in terms of the posterior uncertainty in fossil fuel emissions on scales ranging from 2 to 200 km. This means the assessments include temporal and spatial scales typically not covered by inventories. The assessments differentiate the fossil fuel CO2 emissions into two sectors, an energy generation sector (power plants) and the complement, which we call “other sector.” We find that combined measurements of XCO2 and aerosols provide a powerful constraint on emissions from larger power plants; the uncertainty in fossil fuel emissions from the largest three power plants in the domain was reduced by 60%–90% after assimilating the observations. Likewise, these measurements achieve an uncertainty reduction for the other sector that increases when aggregated to larger spatial scales. When aggregated over Berlin the uncertainty reduction for the other sector varies between 28% and 48%. Our assessments show a considerable contribution of aerosol observations onboard CO2M to the constraint of the XCO2 measurements on emissions from all power plants and for the other sector on all spatial scales. NO2 measurements onboard CO2M provide a powerful additional constraint on the emissions from power plants and from the other sector. We further apply a Jacobian representation of the CCFFDAS modelling chain to decompose a simulated CO2 column in terms of spatial emission impact. This analysis reveals the complex structure of the footprint of an observed CO2 column, which indicates the limits of simple mass balances approaches for interpretation of such observations.

    • Background: The pathophysiological processes of bipolar disorder (BD) may be detectable by the use of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. Aim: We aimed for the first time to review studies of CSF biomarkers in patients with BD compared to healthy control individuals (HC). We investigated the effect of diagnosis, age, gender, clinical state, medication, technical characteristics of tests, fasting state and, cognitive function if applicable. Method: We did a systematic review according to the PRISMA Statement based on comprehensive database searches for studies on cerebrospinal biomarkers in patients with bipolar disorder versus HC. Risk of bias was systematically assessed. Results: The search strategy identified 410 studies of which thirty-four fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A total of 117 unique biomarkers were investigated, out of which 11 were evaluated in more than one study. Forty biomarkers showed statistically significant differences between BD and HC in single studies. Only the findings of elevated homovanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were replicated across studies. Most studies had a cross sectional design and were influenced by risk of bias mainly due to small sample size, lack of data on mood state at the time of the CSF puncture and not considering potential confounders including age, gender, diagnoses, BMI, life style factors such as smoking, and psychotropic medication. Conclusion: Specific monoamine CSF biomarkers may be related to the pathophysiology of BD. Future studies must aim at increasing the level of evidence by validating the positive findings in prospective studies with stringent methodology. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. and ECNP. • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 13:1, s. 267-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wildfires are by far the largest contributor to global biomass burning and constitute a large global source of atmospheric traces gases and aerosols. Such emissions have a considerable impact on air quality and constitute a major health hazard. Biomass burning also influences the radiative balance of the atmosphere and is thus not only of societal, but also of significant scientific interest. There is a common perception that climate change will lead to an increase in emissions as hot and dry weather events that promote wildfire will become more common. However, even though a few studies have found that the inclusion of CO2 fertilisation of photosynthesis and changes in human population patterns will tend to somewhat lower predictions of future wildfire emissions, no such study has included full ensemble ranges of both climate predictions and population projections, including the effect of different degrees of urbanisation. Here, we present a series of 124 simulations with the LPJ-GUESS-SIMFIRE global dynamic vegetation-wildfire model, including a semi-empirical formulation for the prediction of burned area based on fire weather, fuel continuity and human population density. The simulations use Climate Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) climate predictions from eight Earth system models. These were combined with two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and five scenarios of future human population density based on the series of Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) to assess the sensitivity of emissions to the effect of climate, CO2 and humans. In addition, two alternative parameterisations of the semi-empirical burned-area model were applied. Contrary to previous work, we find no clear future trend of global wildfire emissions for the moderate emissions and climate change scenario based on the RCP 4.5. Only historical population change introduces a decline by around 15% since 1900. Future emissions could either increase for low population growth and fast urbanisation, or continue to decline for high population growth and slow urbanisation. Only for high future climate change (RCP8.5), wildfire emissions start to rise again after ca. 2020 but are unlikely to reach the levels of 1900 by the end of the 21st century. We find that climate warming will generally increase the risk of fire, but that this is only one of several equally important factors driving future levels of wildfire emissions, which include population change, CO2 fertilisation causing woody thickening, increased productivity and fuel load and faster litter turnover in a warmer climate.

    • Wildfires are an important component of terrestrial ecosystem ecology but also a major natural hazard to societies, and their frequency and spatial distribution must be better understood. At a given location, risk from wildfire is associated with the annual fraction of burned area, which is expected to increase in response to climate warming. Until recently, however, only a few global studies of future fire have considered the effects of other important global environmental change factors such as atmospheric CO2 levels and human activities, and how these influence fires in different regions. Here, we contrast the impact of climate change and increasing atmospheric CO2 content on burned area with that of demographic dynamics, using ensembles of climate simulations combined with historical and projected population changes under different socio-economic development pathways for 1901-2100. Historically, humans notably suppressed wildfires. For future scenarios, global burned area will continue to decline under a moderate emissions scenario, except for low population growth and fast urbanization, but start to increase again from around mid-century under high greenhouse gas emissions. Contrary to common perception, we find that human exposure to wildfires increases in the future mainly owing to projected population growth in areas with frequent wildfires, rather than by a general increase in burned area.

    • Human impact on wildfires, a major earth system component, remains poorly understood. While local studies have found more fires close to settlements and roads, assimilated charcoal records and analyses of regional fire patterns from remote-sensing observations point to a decline in fire frequency with increasing human population. Here, we present a global analysis using three multi-year satellite-based burned-area products combined with a parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis with a non-linear model. We show that at the global scale, the impact of increasing population density is mainly to reduce fire frequency. Only for areas with up to 0.1 people per km(2), we find that fire frequency increases by 10 to 20% relative to its value at no population. The results are robust against choice of burned-area data set, and indicate that at only very few places on earth, fire frequency is limited by human ignitions. Applying the results to historical population estimates results in a moderate but accelerating decline of global burned area by around 14% since 1800, with most of the decline since 1950.

    • Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from small peatland lakes may be highly sensitive to climate warming and thermokarst expansion caused by permafrost thaw. We studied effects of thermokarst expansion on ebullitive CH4 and CO2 fluxes and diffusive CH4 fluxes from a peatland thaw lake in boreal western Canada. Ebullitive CH4 fluxes from the thaw edge (236 ± 61 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) were double and quadruple that of the stable lake edge and center, respectively. Modeled diffusive CH4 fluxes did not differ between the thawing and stable edges (~ 50 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) but were double that of the center. Radiocarbon (14C) analysis of CH4 and CO2 bubbles from the thaw edge was older (~ 1211 and 1420 14C yr BP) than from the stable edge and the center (modern to ~ 102 and 50 14C yr BP, respectively). Incubations indicated that deep, old peat sediment was more labile along the thaw edge than in the center. While our study suggested increase CH4 emissions partly derived from millennial-aged carbon along the thaw edge, accounting for these emissions only increased the estimated total lake CH4 emissions by ~ 10%, which is a much smaller contribution than measured from thermokarst lakes in yedoma regions. Our study suggests that it is important to account for landscape history and lake types when studying the processes that govern the sensitivity of lake greenhouse gas emissions to climate change.

    • Recent advances in the field of dermatotherapy have resulted in research efforts focusing on the use of particle-based drug delivery systems for the stimuli-responsive release of drugs in the skin and skin appendages, i.e. hair follicles and sebaceous glands. However, effective and innocuous trigger mechanisms which result in the release of the drugs from the nanocarriers upon reaching the target structures are still lacking. For the first time, the present study demonstrated the photo-activated release of the model drug fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) from topically applied gold nanoparticle-doped bovine serum albumin (AuNPs-doped BSA) particles (approx. 545 nm) using water-filtered infrared A (IRA) radiation in the hair follicles of an ex vivo porcine skin model. The IRA radiation-induced plasmonic heating of the AuNPs results in the partial decomposition or opening of the albumin particles and release the model drug, while control particles without AuNPs show insignificant release. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using IRA radiation to induce release of encapsulated drugs from plasmonic nanocarriers for the targeting of follicular structures. However, the risk of radiation-induced skin damage subsequent to repeated applications of high infrared dosages may be significant. Future studies should aim at determining the suitability of lower infrared A dosages, such as for medical treatment regimens which may necessitate repeated exposure to therapeutics. Statement of significance Follicular targeting using nanocarriers is of increasing importance in the prophylaxis and treatment of dermatological or other diseases. For the first time, the present study demonstrated the photo activated release of the model drug fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) from topically applied gold nanoparticle-doped bovine serum albumin (AuNPs-doped BSA) particles using water-filtered infrared A (IRA) radiation in the hair follicles of an ex vivo porcine skin model. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using wIRA radiation to induce release of encapsulated drugs for the targeting of follicular structures, and provide a new vision on the development of optically addressable delivery systems for controlled release of drugs in the skin and skin appendages, i.e. hair follicles and sebaceous glands. • Carrier Dynamics in Graphene: Ultrafast Many-Particle Phenomena
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annalen der Physik. - : Wiley. - 0003-3804 .- 1521-3889. ; 529:11

    • Graphene is an ideal material to study fundamental Coulomb- and phonon-induced carrier scattering processes. Its remarkable gapless and linear band structure opens up new carrier relaxation channels. In particular, Auger scattering bridging the valence and the conduction band changes the number of charge carriers and gives rise to a significant carrier multiplication - an ultrafast many-particle phenomenon that is promising for the design of highly efficient photodetectors. Furthermore, the vanishing density of states at the Dirac point combined with ultrafast phonon-induced intraband scattering results in an accumulation of carriers and a population inversion suggesting the design of graphene-based terahertz lasers. Here, we review our work on the ultrafast carrier dynamics in graphene and Landau-quantized graphene is presented providing a microscopic view on the appearance of carrier multiplication and population inversion.

  • Optical Response From Functionalized Atomically Thin Nanomaterials
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annalen der Physik. - : Wiley. - 0003-3804 .- 1521-3889. ; 529:10
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chemical functionalization of atomically thin nanostructures presents a promising strategy to create new hybrid nanomaterials with remarkable and externally controllable properties. Here, we review our research in the field of theoretical modeling of carbon nanotubes, graphene, and transition metal dichalcogenides located in molecular dipole fields. In particular, we provide a microscopic view on the change of the optical response of these technologically promising nanomaterials due to the presence of photo-active spiropyran molecules. The feature article presents a review of recent theoretical work providing microscopic view on the optical response of chemically functionalized carbon nanotubes, graphene, and monolayered transition metal dichalcogenides. In particular, we propose a novel sensor mechanism based on the molecule-induced activation of dark excitons. This results in a pronounced additional peak presenting an unambiguous optical fingerprint for the attached molecules.

    • The remarkable gapless and linear band structure of graphene opens up new carrier relaxation channels bridging the valence and the conduction band. These Auger scattering processes change the number of charge carriers and can give rise to a significant multiplication of optically excited carriers in graphene. This is an ultrafast many-particle phenomenon that is of great interest both for fundamental many-particle physics as well as technological applications. Here, we review the research on carrier multiplication in graphene and Landau-quantized graphene including theoretical modeling and experimental demonstration. Illustration of the electronic band structure of graphene including Auger scattering channels that can lead to a carrier multiplication (CM). Figure adapted from Ref. [2].
