  • Graphene Synthesis on Cubic SiC/Si Wafers. Perspectives for Mass Production of Graphene-Based Electronic Devices
  • 2010
  • In: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 10:3, s. 992-995
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The outstanding properties of graphene, a single graphite layer, render it a top candidate for substituting silicon in future electronic devices, The so far exploited synthesis approaches, however, require conditions typically achieved in specialized laboratories and result in graphene sheets whose electronic properties are often altered by interactions with substrate materials. The development of graphene-based technologies requires an economical fabrication method compatible with mass production. Here we demonstrate for the fist Lime the feasibility of graphene synthesis on commercially available cubic SiC/Si substrates of >300 mm in diameter, which result in graphene flakes electronically decoupled from the substrate. After optimization of the preparation procedure, the proposed synthesis method can represent a further big step toward graphene-based electronic technologies.

  • Single-wall-carbon-nanotube/single-carbon-chain molecular junctions
  • 2010
  • In: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 81:8, s. 085439-1-085439-5
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Stable junctions between a single carbon chain and two single-wall carbon nanotubes were produced via coalescence of functionalized fullerenes filled into a single-wall carbon nanotube and directly imaged by in situ transmission electron microscopy. First principles quantum chemical calculations support the observed stability of such molecular junctions. They also show that short carbon chains bound to other carbon structures are cumulenes and stable semiconductors due to Peierls-like distortion. Junctions like this can be regarded as archetypical building blocks for all-carbon molecular electronics.

  • Exciton dispersion in two-dimensional organic perylene crystal indicates substantial charge-transfer exciton coupling
  • 2023
  • In: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 107:11
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Two-dimensional, high-quality perylene single crystals were grown with a space-confined strategy method. The grown films crystallize in the alpha form, as is confirmed by a combination of techniques. Polarization -dependent optical absorption measurements show a strong anisotropy in very good agreement with the literature data, and the anisotropic mobility data in field-effect transistors document the very high crystalline order. Momentum-dependent studies using electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveal a negative dispersion of the first exciton along the crystal b direction with an exciton bandwidth of 72 meV. We argue that this behavior is a result of charge-transfer exciton coupling between the perylene dimers in the unit cell.

  • ·OH-Free Catalytic Decomposition of H2O2 by GdVO4:Eu3+ Nanoparticles
  • 2023
  • In: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 127:31, s. 15206-15214
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • H2O2 is known to be one of the initiators provoking biomolecules (lipids and proteins) oxidation and cell mutation and death. In this context, molecules, which can react with H2O2 without generating free radicals such as hydroxyl radicals (·OH), are of special interest as effective preventive antioxidants. In the present study, we report on GdVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles (NPs) as prospective preventive nanozymes. Synthesized GdVO4:Eu3+ NPs were characterized by TEM, HR-TEM, XRD, SAXS, and XPS methods. It has been revealed that in water solutions GdVO4:Eu3+ NPs are in the form of individual crystalline spheroids with ? = 12.1 ± 1.23 nm and d = 5.76 ± 0.68 nm. Using the optical spectroscopy technique, the possibility for Fenton- and CAT-like reactions in water solutions containing GdVO4:Eu3+ NPs has been analyzed. The protective effect of GdVO4:Eu3+ NPs from H2O2-induced oxidative stress has been estimated using rat hepatocytes and analyzing changes in cells’ mitochondrial potential. It was concluded that the main mechanism of H2O2 decomposition both in aqueous solutions and biological milieu is rather associated with CAT-like reactions that ensure the V4+/V5+ and V3+/V4+ redox cycling.
