  • Bimetallic nanoparticles as a model system for an industrial NiMo catalyst
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Materials. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1944. ; 12:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An in-depth understanding of the reactionmechanismis required for the further development of Mo-based catalysts for biobased feedstocks. However, fundamental studies of industrial catalysts are challenging, and simplified systems are often used without direct comparison to their industrial counterparts. Here, we report on size-selected bimetallic NiMo nanoparticles as a candidate for a model catalyst that is directly compared to the industrial system to evaluate their industrial relevance. Both the nanoparticles and industrial supported NiMo catalysts were characterized using surface- and bulk-sensitive techniques. We found that the active Ni and Mo metals in the industrial catalyst are well dispersed and well mixed on the support, and that the interaction between Ni and Mo promotes the reduction of the Mo oxide. We successfully produced 25 nm NiMo alloyed nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution. Characterization of the nanoparticles showed that they have a metallic core with a native oxide shell with a high potential for use as a model system for fundamental studies of hydrotreating catalysts for biobased feedstocks. © 2019 by the authors.

  • Large exchange bias in Cr substituted Fe3O4nanoparticles with FeO subdomains
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372. ; 13:37, s. 15844-15852
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tuning the anisotropy through exchange bias in bimagnetic nanoparticles is an active research strategy for enhancing and tailoring the magnetic properties for a wide range of applications. Here we present a structural and magnetic characterization of unique FeCr-oxide nanoparticles generated from seed material with a Fe : Cr ratio of 4.71 : 1 using a physical aerosol method based on spark ablation. The nanoparticles have a novel bimagnetic structure composed of a 40 nm ferrimagnetic Cr-substituted Fe3O4 structure with 4 nm antiferromagnetic FexO subdomains. Cooling in an applied magnetic field across the Néel temperature of the FexO subdomains results in a significant shift in the hysteresis, demonstrating the presence of a large exchange bias. The observed shift of μ0HE = 460 mT is among the largest values reported for FexO-Fe3O4-based nanoparticles and is attributed to the large antiferromagnetic-ferrimagnetic interface area provided by the subdomains.

  • A tough trade-off? The asymmetrical impact of populist radical right inclusion on satisfaction with democracy and government
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Political Science Review. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 1755-7739 .- 1755-7747. ; 13:1, s. 113-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Populist radical right (PRR) parties are increasingly included in coalition governments across Western Europe. How does such inclusion affect satisfaction with democracy (SWD) in these societies? While some citizens will feel democracy has grown more responsive, others will abhor the inclusion of such controversial parties. Using data from the European Social Survey (2002-2018) and panel data from the Netherlands, we investigate how nativists' and non-nativists' SWD depends on mainstream parties' strategies towards PRR parties. We show that the effect is asymmetrical: at moments of inclusion nativists become substantially more satisfied with democracy, while such satisfaction among non-nativists decreases less or not at all. This pattern, which we attribute to Easton's 'reservoir of goodwill', that is, a buffer of political support generated by a track-record of good performance and responsiveness, can account for the seemingly contradictory increase in SWD in many Western European countries in times of populism.

  • Adapting to party lines: the effect of party affiliation on attitudes to immigration
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: West European Politics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0140-2382 .- 1743-9655. ; 40:6, s. 1177-1197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Public opinion on immigration is increasingly relevant for political behaviour. However, little is known about the way in which citizens' political allegiances in turn shape their attitudes to immigration. Abundant existing evidence suggests that voters often take cues from the parties they support. Using panel data from the Netherlands and Sweden, this article investigates the dynamic relation between attitudes to immigration and party preferences. The longitudinal nature of the data allows for making stronger claims about causal mechanisms than previous cross-sectional studies. The analysis shows that voters who change their preference to the Radical Right become stricter on immigration, whereas voters changing to the Greens become less strict on immigration over time. This confirms that citizens' support for anti- and pro-immigration parties results in a radicalisation' of their views on immigration along party lines. A similar spiral' of radicalisation can be found around the issue of European integration.

  • Gender Differences in Vote Choice: Social Cues and Social Harmony as Heuristics
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Political Science. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0007-1234 .- 1469-2112. ; 49:3, s. 1141-1161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some parties are more popular among men, while other parties attract more female voters. This article proposes that these differences can be partially explained by two recurring gender differences in the socio-psychological literature. It argues that men's generally lower sensitivity to social cues makes them more likely to vote for stigmatized and small parties, whereas women's greater concern with social harmony is expected to make them less likely to vote for extreme parties. The models are tested at the individual and party levels using three waves of Comparative Study of Electoral Systems data from twenty-eight countries. Ceteris paribus, men are more likely than women to vote for parties that are socially stigmatized or ideologically extreme. This has consequences for the current understanding of gender gaps in voting, and reiterates that voting has important social aspects.

  • Social Stigma and Support for the Populist Radical Right: An Experimental Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Political Studies. - : Wiley. - 0080-6757 .- 1467-9477. ; 42:3-4, s. 296-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 'taboo' or 'stigma' associated with many populist radical right parties (PRRPs) has been argued to be an important constraint on their electoral success. In comparison to mainstream parties, there seems to be a higher barrier keeping voters from supporting PRRPs. However, this mechanism has not been tested directly. We conducted a randomized survey-embedded experiment manipulating the social stigma of a fictitious radical right party in Sweden. We compare three conditions. Two of these contain subtle signals about how other respondents feel about this party. In one condition the fictitious party is supported by many voters (the neutralizing condition) and in the other it is evaluated negatively by the overwhelming majority (the stigma condition). Both experimental groups do not differ significant from the control group in support for this fictitious party. However, the difference between the two experimental groups is borderline significant. This suggests that there is a causal effect of social stigma on support for a RRP, even though the evidence is rather tentative.

  • Group Gender Composition and Tolerance of Immigrants' Rights
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Sociological Review. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0266-7215 .- 1468-2672. ; 31:1, s. 65-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research has shown that women on average express more positive attitudes towards out-groups than men. We hypothesize that, because of differences in the social climate that this gender gap produces, people who spend more time in female-dominated groups are likely to develop more positive attitudes towards out-groups than people who spend more time in groups that are dominated by men. We corroborate our argument with evidence from two unique Swedish data sets. On the basis of the first data set, we show that students who attend female-dominated school classes are more tolerant of immigrants' rights than students attending male-dominated school classes. On the basis of the second data set, we show that adults who work at female-dominated workplaces are more tolerant of immigrants' rights than adults who work at male-dominated workplaces. Overall, our findings demonstrate that group gender composition is important for understanding the formation of attitudes towards out-groups.

  • Ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy setup for synchrotron-based in situ and operando atomic layer deposition research
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7623 .- 0034-6748. ; 93:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An ambient pressure cell is described for conducting synchrotron-based x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements during atomic layer deposition (ALD) processes. The instrument is capable of true in situ and operando experiments in which it is possible to directly obtain elemental and chemical information from the sample surface using XPS as the deposition process is ongoing. The setup is based on the ambient pressure XPS technique, in which sample environments with high pressure (several mbar) can be created without compromising the ultrahigh vacuum requirements needed for the operation of the spectrometer and the synchrotron beamline. The setup is intended for chemical characterization of the surface intermediates during the initial stages of the deposition processes. The SPECIES beamline and the ALD cell provide a unique experimental platform for obtaining new information on the surface chemistry during ALD half-cycles at high temporal resolution. Such information is valuable for understanding the ALD reaction mechanisms and crucial in further developing and improving ALD processes. We demonstrate the capabilities of the setup by studying the deposition of TiO2 on a SiO2 surface by using titanium(IV) tetraisopropoxide and water as precursors. Multiple core levels and the valence band of the substrate surface were followed during the film deposition using ambient pressure XPS.

  • Formation of stable HCl+ following resonant Auger decay in CH3Cl
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW A. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9926. ; 94:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoinduced reformation of chemical bonds is investigated in the CH3Cl molecule experimentally and computationally. The observation of stable HCl+ fragment formation after resonant Cl 2p photoexcitation is confirmed by an electron-ion coincidence experiment, and its possible creation mechanism is reported. We attribute the formation of HCl+ to specific final states populated by the resonant Auger decay. Quantum chemical computations support this attribution and suggest that in at least one of those states the system is placed on a potential energy surface which favors creation of HCl+ by moving one hydrogen atom to a closer proximity of the chlorine atom. This work demonstrates the effect of targeted core-shell excitation on the chemical bond breaking and reformation process, often called photoinduced chemistry.

  • Fragmentation of mercury compounds under ultraviolet light irradiation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 143:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultraviolet light induced photofragmentation of mercury compounds is studied experimentally with electron energy resolved photoelectron-photoion coincidence techniques and theoretically with computational quantum chemical methods. A high resolution photoelectron spectrum using synchrotron radiation is presented. Fragmentation of the molecule is studied subsequent to ionization to the atomic-mercury-like d orbitals. State dependent fragmentation behaviour is presented and specific reactions for dissociation pathways are given. The fragmentation is found to differ distinctly in similar orbitals of different mercury compounds.

  • Spin-orbit interaction mediated molecular dissociation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 140:18, s. 184304-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the spin-orbit interaction to photofragmentation is investigated in the mercury(II) bromide (HgBr2) molecule. Changes in the fragmentation between the two spin-orbit components of Hg 5d photoionization, as well as within the molecular-field-splitted levels of these components are observed. Dissociation subsequent to photoionization is studied with synchrotron radiation and photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy. The experimental results are accompanied by relativistic ab initio analysis of the photoelectron spectrum.

  • From synchrotrons for XFELs : The soft x-ray near-edge spectrum of the ESCA molecule
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 53:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A predictive understanding of soft x-ray near-edge absorption spectra of small molecules is an enduring theoretical challenge and of current interest for x-ray probes of molecular dynamics. We report the experimental absorption spectrum for the electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) molecule (ethyl trifluoroacetate) near the carbon 1s absorption edge between 285-300 eV. The ESCA molecule with four chemically distinct carbon sites has previously served as a theoretical benchmark for photoelectron spectra and now for photoabsorption spectra. We report a simple edge-specific approach for systematically expanding standard basis sets to properly describe diffuse Rydberg orbitals and the importance of triple excitations in equation-of-motion coupled-cluster calculations of the energy interval between valence and Rydberg excitations.
