  • Measurement of prompt J/psi and beauty hadron production cross sections at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; :11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied J/psi production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV through its electron pair decay on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L-int = 5.6 nb(-1). The fraction of J/psi from the decay of long-lived beauty hadrons was determined for J/psi candidates with transverse momentum p(t) > 1,3 GeV/c and rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9. The cross section for prompt J/psi mesons, i.e. directly produced J/psi and prompt decays of heavier charmonium states such as the psi(2S) and chi(c) resonances, is sigma(prompt J/psi) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 8.3 +/- 0.8(stat.) +/- 1.1 (syst.)(-1.4)(+1.5) (syst. pol.) mu b. The cross section for the production of b-hadrons decaying to J/psi with p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 is a sigma(J/psi <- hB) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 1.46 +/- 0.38 (stat.)(-0.32)(+0.26) (syst.) mu b. The results are compared to QCD model predictions. The shape of the p(t) and y distributions of b-quarks predicted by perturbative QCD model calculations are used to extrapolate the measured cross section to derive the b (b) over bar pair total cross section and d sigma/dy at mid-rapidity.

  • Underlying Event measurements in pp collisions at root s=0.9 and 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at root s = 0 : 9 and 7 TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p(T),L-T in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions collect the fragmentation products of the hardest partonic interaction. The Transverse region is expected to be most sensitive to the Underlying Event activity. The study is performed with charged particles above three different p(T) thresholds: 0.15, 0.5 and 1.0 GeV/c. In the Transverse region we observe an increase in the multiplicity of a factor 2-3 between the lower and higher collision energies, depending on the track p(T) threshold considered. Data are compared to PYTHIA 6.4, PYTHIA 8.1 and PHOJET. On average, all models considered underestimate the multiplicity and summed p(T) in the Transverse region by about 10-30%.

  • Nanocrystal Assemblies : Current Advances and Open Problems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - 1936-0851. ; 18:23, s. 14791-14840
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

  • Percolation of rigid fractal carbon black aggregates
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 155:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine network formation and percolation of carbon black by means of Monte Carlo simulations and experiments. In the simulation, we model carbon black by rigid aggregates of impenetrable spheres, which we obtain by diffusion-limited aggregation. To determine the input parameters for the simulation, we experimentally characterize the micro-structure and size distribution of carbon black aggregates. We then simulate suspensions of aggregates and determine the percolation threshold as a function of the aggregate size distribution. We observe a quasi-universal relation between the percolation threshold and a weighted average radius of gyration of the aggregate ensemble. Higher order moments of the size distribution do not have an effect on the percolation threshold. We conclude further that the concentration of large carbon black aggregates has a stronger influence on the percolation threshold than the concentration of small aggregates. In the experiment, we disperse the carbon black in a polymer matrix and measure the conductivity of the composite. We successfully test the hypotheses drawn from simulation by comparing composites prepared with the same type of carbon black before and after ball milling, i.e., on changing only the distribution of aggregate sizes in the composites.& nbsp;

  • Electronic density response of warm dense matter
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - : AIP Publishing. - 1070-664X .- 1089-7674. ; 30:3, s. 032705-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Matter at extreme temperatures and pressures-commonly known as warm dense matter (WDM)-is ubiquitous throughout our Universe and occurs in astrophysical objects such as giant planet interiors and brown dwarfs. Moreover, WDM is very important for technological applications such as inertial confinement fusion and is realized in the laboratory using different techniques. A particularly important property for the understanding of WDM is given by its electronic density response to an external perturbation. Such response properties are probed in x-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) experiments and are central for the theoretical description of WDM. In this work, we give an overview of a number of recent developments in this field. To this end, we summarize the relevant theoretical background, covering the regime of linear response theory and nonlinear effects, the fully dynamic response and its static, time-independent limit, and the connection between density response properties and imaginary-time correlation functions (ITCF). In addition, we introduce the most important numerical simulation techniques, including path-integral Monte Carlo simulations and different thermal density functional theory (DFT) approaches. From a practical perspective, we present a variety of simulation results for different density response properties, covering the archetypal model of the uniform electron gas and realistic WDM systems such as hydrogen. Moreover, we show how the concept of ITCFs can be used to infer the temperature from XRTS measurements of arbitrary complex systems without the need for any models or approximations. Finally, we outline a strategy for future developments based on the close interplay between simulations and experiments.

  • Peri-Gondwanan Ordovician arc magmatism in southeastern Ireland and the Isle of Man : Constraints on the timing of Caledonian deformation in Ganderia
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: GSA Bulletin. ; 130:11-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The timing of and tectonic controls on Ordovician magmatism and deformation within accreted terranes are key elements in reconstructing the generation of the Caledonian-Appalachian orogen. This paper addresses the topic through integrated geochronological, structural, and multi-isotope geochemical investigation of magmatic arc–related peri-Gondwanan rocks of Ganderian affinity in the Leinster-Lakesman terrane in SE Ireland and the Isle of Man.A basaltic andesite from a previously unrecognized volcaniclastic sequence in the Manx Group at Port-e-Vullen on the Isle of Man yielded an age of 472.7 ± 2.8 Ma (secondary ion mass spectrometry [SIMS] zircon U-Pb), and an arc-related rhyolite from the Avoca volcanic sequence in SE Ireland was dated at 463.6 ± 2.6 Ma. Two granitoids from Graiguenamanagh (SE Ireland) yielded ages of 462.0 ± 2.7 Ma (augen gneiss) and 460.5 ± 3.2 Ma (equigranular granite), whereas the Dhoon granite (Isle of Man) was dated at 457.2 ± 1.2 Ma. Each of the granitic rocks from Graiguenamanagh and Dhoon was previously considered to be of Silurian–Devonian age. In addition, two sheets of the Croghan Kinshelagh granite (SE Ireland) yielded indistinguishable ages of 456.9 ± 2.4 Ma and 455.4 ± 2.8 Ma.Multi-isotopic analyses (SIMS zircon oxygen, laser ablation–multi-collector–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry [LA-MC-ICP-MS] zircon Lu-Hf, whole-rock Sm-Nd) on the rocks of the Leinster-Lakesman terrane suggest a significant source contribution from the Ganderian microcontinent, represented by the Early Ordovician metasedimentary Ribband and Manx Groups.Structural relationships at Graiguenamanagh demonstrate a late Middle Ordovician deformation event at ca. 460 Ma. This deformation appears to be equivalent to the widespread D1 event that affected Early Ordovician rocks in SE Ireland and corresponds to the early structures within the East Carlow deformation zone, previously interpreted as an exclusively Devonian structure. Along strike, the early deformation is spatially associated with serpentinite emplacement. The East Carlow deformation zone is interpreted as an intra-Ganderian suture along which separate fragments of a peri-Gondwanan magmatic arc were juxtaposed at ca. 460 Ma. This deformation represents a Caledonian tectonic event that has not been recognized within Ganderia in the Appalachian sector of the orogen.

  • Survey of bidirectional transmittance distribution function measurement facilities by multilateral scale comparisons
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Metrologia. - : Institute of Physics. - 0026-1394 .- 1681-7575. ; 61:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, a growing demand for the capability of performing accurate measurements of the bidirectional transmittance distribution function (BTDF) has been observed in industry, research and development, and aerospace applications. However, there exists no calibration and measurement capabilities-entry for BTDF in the database of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures and to date no BTDF comparison has been conducted between different national metrology institutes (NMIs) or designated institutes (DIs). As a first step to a possible future key comparison and to test the existing capabilities of determining this measurand, two interlaboratory comparisons were performed. In comparison one, five samples of three different types of optical transmissive diffusers were measured by five NMIs and one DI. By specific sample choice, the focus for this study lay more on orientation-dependent scatter properties. In comparison two, where one NMI, one DI, one university, and three industrial partners investigated their measurement capabilities, the dependence on the orientation was not assessed, but two additional samples of the same material and different thickness were measured. Results of the two comparisons are presented, giving a good overview of existing experimental solutions, and showing specific sample-related problems to be solved for improved future BTDF measurements.

  • Abuse of Non-opioid Analgesics in Germany : Prevalence and Associations Among Self-Medicated Users
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-0640. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Abuse of non-opioid analgesics (NOA) is associated with serious health consequences. However, due to inconsistent definitions of NOA abuse, prevalence estimates for the German population are unclear. Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the 12-month prevalence of NOA abuse among self-medicated users of these drugs in the general German population and to identify risk factors. Methods: Data are from the 2015 Epidemiological Survey of Substance Abuse, a nationally representative sample with 9,204 individuals aged 18–64 years. Classification of NOA abuse was based on self-reported information according to the definition of the ICD-10-GM diagnosis F55.2 abuse of non-dependence producing substances. Multiple logistic regression was performed to examine associations between NOA abuse and sociodemographic, behavioral, and health-related variables. Results: The weighted 12-month prevalence of NOA abuse was 14.6% (95%-CI [13.2- 16.0]) among self-medicated users of these drugs. Extrapolation of the proportion of individuals abusing NOA to the German population aged 18 to 64 is 3,243,396 individuals or 6.4% (95%-CI [5.7- 7.1]). Inexplicable physical pain, being underweight, depression, hazardous alcohol use, daily smoking, illegal drug use, and frequent use of NOA (one or more times per week and daily use) were associated with an increased probability of NOA abuse. The use of cannabis was associated with a lower probability of NOA abuse. Conclusion: Abuse of NOA is highly prevalent in the German population. Against the background of increasing self-medication of NOA, healthcare providers need to be aware of potential risk factors of abuse to better identify and prevent this problem.

  • Subtypes in Patients Taking Prescribed Opioid Analgesics and Their Characteristics : A Latent Class Analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-0640. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Owing to their pharmacological properties the use of opioid analgesics carries a risk of abuse and dependence, which are associated with a wide range of personal, social, and medical problems. Data-based approaches for identifying distinct patient subtypes at risk for prescription opioid use disorder in Germany are lacking. Objective: This study aimed to identify distinct subgroups of patients using prescribed opioid analgesics at risk for prescription opioid use disorder. Methods: Latent class analysis was applied to pooled data from the 2015 and 2021 Epidemiological Survey of Substance Abuse. Participants were aged 18–64 years and self-reported the use of prescribed opioid analgesics in the last year (n = 503). Seven class-defining variables based on behavioral, mental, and physical health characteristics commonly associated with problematic opioid use were used to identify participant subtypes. Statistical tests were performed to examine differences between the participant subtypes on sociodemographic variables and prescription opioid use disorder. Results: Three classes were extracted, which were labeled as poor mental health group (43.0%, n = 203), polysubstance group (10.4%, n = 50), and relatively healthy group (46.6%, n = 250). Individuals within the poor mental health group (23.2%, n = 43) and the polysubstance group (31.1%, n = 13) showed a higher prevalence of prescription opioid use disorder compared to those of the relatively healthy group. Conclusion: The results add further evidence to the knowledge that patients using prescribed opioid analgesics are not a homogeneous group of individuals whose needs lie in pain management alone. Rather, it becomes clear that these patients differ in their individual risk of a prescription opioid use disorder, and therefore identification of specific risks plays an important role in early prevention.

  • In Situ Study of Structure Formation under Stress in Stretchable Conducting Nanocomposites
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 14:25, s. 5834-5840
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the major limitations of flexible sensors is the loss of conductivity upon multiple stretching and bending cycles. Conducting fillers with two different geometries, carbon black and carbon nanotubes, were introduced in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for physical insights into the structure formation of nanofillers by the application of periodic tensile stress. The loading of the nanofillers was selected beyond the percolation threshold to determine the cyclic stability of the resulting network channels. The surface chemistry of carbon nanotubes has been varied to understand the interfacial interactions at the molecular length scale. The combination of in situ stretching, annealing, and vis-à-vis conductometry of nanocomposite films with synchrotron-based ultra-small angle X-ray scattering experiments enables us to highlight the importance of the fractal dimensions of nanofillers for the molecular level interactions. The irreversible formation of nanofiller network geometries under cyclic stress and annealing was found to be responsible for the electrical properties of a flexible conducting film.

  • Identification of sawflies and horntails (Hymenoptera, ‘Symphyta’) through DNA barcodes: successes and caveats
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Molecular Ecology Resources. - : Wiley. - 1755-098X .- 1755-0998. ; 17, s. 670-685
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ‘Symphyta’ is a paraphyletic assemblage at the base of the order Hymenoptera, comprising 14 families and about 8750 species. All have phytophagous larvae, except for the Orussidae, which are parasitoids. This study presents and evaluates the results of DNA barcoding of approximately 5360 specimens of ‘Symphyta’, mainly adults, and 4362 sequences covering 1037 species were deemed of suitable quality for inclusion in the analysis. All extant families are represented, except for the Anaxyelidae. The majority of species and specimens are from Europe, but approximately 38% of the species and 13% of the specimens are of non-European origin. The utility of barcoding for species identification and taxonomy of ‘Symphyta’ is discussed on the basis of examples from each of the included families. A significant level of cryptic species diversity was apparent in many groups. Other attractive applications include the identification of immature stages without the need to rear them, community analyses based on metabarcoding of bulk samples and association of the sexes of adults.

  • Rapid decline of yearly number of hip arthroscopies in Sweden: a retrospective time series of 6,105 hip arthroscopies based on a national patient data register
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Acta Orthopaedica. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1745-3674 .- 1745-3682. ; 92:5, s. 562-567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purpose - Hip arthroscopies (HAs) have increased exponentially worldwide and are expected to continue rising. We describe time trends in HA procedures in Sweden (10 million inhabitants) between 2006 and 2018 with a focus on procedure rates, surgical procedures, and patient demographics such as age and sex distribution. Patients and methods - We retrospectively collected data from the Swedish National Patient Register (NPR) for all surgeries including surgical treatment codes considered relevant for HA from 2006 to 2018. Surgical codes were validated through a multiple-step procedure and classified into femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) related or non-FAIS related procedure. Frequencies, sex differences, and time trends of surgical procedures and patient demographics are presented. Results - After validation of HA codes, 6,105 individual procedures, performed in 4,924 patients (mean age 34 years [SD 12]) were confirmed HAs and included in the analysis. Yearly HA procedure rates increased from 15 in 2006 to 884 in 2014, after which a steady decline was observed with 469 procedures in 2018. The majority (65%) of HAs was performed in males. Male patients were younger, and surgeries on males more frequently included an FAIS-related procedure. Interpretation - Similar to previous studies in other parts of the world, we found dramatic increases in HA procedures in Sweden between 2006 and 2014. Contrary to existing predictions, HA rates declined steadily after 2014, which may be explained by more restrictive patient selection based on refined surgical indications, increasing evidence, and clinical experience with the procedure.
