    • The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. In this paper we introduce the science goals and the concept of CTA, and provide an overview of the project. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA.

    • The ANTARES neutrino telescope, to be immersed depth in the Mediterranean Sea, will consist of a three-dimensional matrix of 900 large area photomultiplier tubes housed in pressure-resistant glass spheres. The selection of the optimal photomultiplier was a critical step for the project and required an intensive phase of tests and developments carried out in close collaboration with the main manufacturers worldwide.   • Transmission of light in deep sea water at the site of the ANTARES neutrino telescope

    • The ANTARES neutrino telescope is a large photomultiplier array designed to detect neutrino-induced upward-going muons by their Cherenkov radiation. Understanding the absorption and scattering of light in the deep Mediterranean is fundamental to optimising the design and performance of the detector. This paper presents measurements of blue and UV light transmission at the ANTARES site taken between 1997 and 2000. The derived values for the scattering length and the angular distribution of particulate scattering were found to be highly correlated, and results are therefore presented in terms of an absorption length;,ab, and an effective scattering length lambda(sct)(eff). The values for blue (UV) light are found to be lambda(abs) similar or equal to 60(26) m, lambda(sct)(eff similar or equal to) 265(122) m, with significant (similar to15%) time variability. Finally, the results of ANTARES simulations showing the effect of these water properties on the anticipated performance of the detector are presented. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • The violation of baryon number, , is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron–antineutron oscillation () via mixing, neutron–antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state (), and neutron disappearance (n → n'); the effective process of neutron regeneration () is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterize mixing in the neutron, antineutron and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

  • Early onset of deformation in the neutron-deficient polonium isotopes

    • In-source laser spectroscopy has been performed at CERN-ISOLDE with the RILIS laser ion source on 191-204,206,208-211,216,218Po. New information on the β decay of 199Po were extracted in the process, challenging previous results. Large-scale atomic calculations were performed to extract the changes in the mean-square charge radius δr 2 from the isotope shifts. The δ«r» 2 for the even-A isotopes reveal a large deviation from the spherical droplet model for N < 116.

    • Morphology of microporous films prepared from aromatic polyamidoimides under different molding conditions was studied by scanning, transmission, and atomic force microscopy with the specific attention given to the nanosize skin layer. The films were manufactured by the phase inversion molding of aromatic polyamidoimides which were synthesized by low-temperature polycondensation of phthalimidobenzenedicarbonyl dichloride with various diamines. Comparison of the parameters of films, including their wettability and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data, gave additional information on factors affecting the mechanism of formation of microporous membranes in the system polymer (polyamidoimide)-solvent (N-methylpyrrolidin-2-one)-non-solvent (water).

    • In-source resonant ionization laser spectroscopy of the even-A polonium isotopes Po-192-210,Po-216,Po-218 has been performed using the 6p(3)7s S-5(2) to (6)p(3)7p P-5(2) (lambda = 843.38 nm) transition in the polonium atom (Po-I) at the CERN ISOLDE facility. The comparison of the measured isotope shifts in Po200-210 with a previous data set allows us to test for the first time recent large-scale atomic calculations that are essential to extract the changes in the mean-square charge radius of the atomic nucleus. When going to lighter masses, a surprisingly large and early departure from sphericity is observed, which is only partly reproduced by beyond mean field calculations.

    • Complementary studies of Pb-191 have been made in the beta decay of Bi-191 at LISOL (CRC) and in the alpha decay of Po-195 at ISOLDE (CERN). Fine structures in the alpha decay of the low-spin and high-spin isomers of 195Po have been fully resolved. Identification of the parent state is made possible via isomer selection based on narrow-band laser frequency scanning. The alpha-particle and gamma-ray energies have been determined with greater precision. New alpha-particle and. gamma-ray energies are identified. Branching ratios in the decay of Po-195 and Pb-191 have been examined.

    • Films of diluted ferromagnetic (FM) Ni-x Cu1 - x alloys with 0.5 < x < 1 of about 80 nm in thickness were deposited at room temperature on glass-ceramic substrates using electron-beam co-deposition from Cu and Ni sources. The temperature dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra was investigated in the 140 < T < 500 K temperature range. The FMR spectra for films of composition 0.75 <= x <= 0.89 show two absorption peaks, which can be ascribed to a formation of two different FM phases as a result of phase separation in the alloy. The observed unusual temperature dependence of the resonance magnetic fields is interpreted as potentially magnetostrictive in nature. The results are discussed and compared to those for similar Ni-Cu films obtained using magnetron sputtering.

  • Charge radii of odd-A Po191-211 isotopes

    • Isotope shifts have been measured for the odd-A polonium isotopes Po191-211 and changes in the nuclear mean square charge radii delta < r(2 >) have been deduced. The measurements were performed at CERN-ISOLDE using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. The combined analysis of these data and our recent results for even-A polonium isotopes indicates an onset of deformation already at Po-197,Po-198, when going away from stability. This is significantly earlier than was suggested by previous theoretical and experimental studies of the polonium isotopes. Moreover and in contrast to the mercury isotopes, where a strong odd-even staggering of the charge radii of the ground states was observed by approaching the neutron mid-shell at N = 104, no such effect is present in polonium down to Po-191. Consequently the charge radii of both isomeric and ground states of the odd-A polonium isotopes follow the same trend as the even-A isotopes.

    • Hyperfine splitting parameters have been measured for the neutron-deficient odd-mass polonium isotopes and isomers Po-193-203(g,m), Po-209,Po-211. The measurement was performed at the ISOLDE (CERN) online mass separator using the in-source resonance ionization spectroscopy technique. The magnetic dipole moments mu and spectroscopic electric quadrupole moments Q(S) have been deduced. Their implication for the understanding of nuclear structure in the vicinity of the closed proton shell at Z = 82 and the neutron mid-shell at N = 104 is discussed. For the most neutron-deficient nuclei (A = 193,195,197), a deviation of mu and QS from the nearly constant values for heavier polonium nuclei was observed. Particle-plus-rotor calculations with static oblate deformation describe the electromagnetic moments for these nuclei well, provided a gradual increase of a mean deformation when going to lighter masses is assumed for the polonium nuclei with A < 198.

    • The first experimental investigation of the near-threshold cross section for incoherent π-photoproduction on the deuteron γd→π-pp is presented. The experimental technique involved detection of the ≈131 MeV γ ray resulting from the radiative capture of photoproduced π-in the target. The total cross section was measured using an unpolarized tagged-photon beam, a liquid-deuterium target, and three very large NaI(Tl) spectrometers. The data are compared to theoretical models that give insight into the elementary reaction γn→π-p and pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon final-state interactions.

  • Risk factors for perinatal mortality in Murmansk County, Russia: a registry-based study

    • Background: Factors contributing to perinatalmortality (PM) in Northwest Russia remain unclear. This study investigated possible associations between selected maternal and fetal characteristics and PM based on data from the population-based Murmansk County Birth Registry. Objective: This study investigated possible associations between selected maternal and fetal characteristics and PM based on data from the population-based Murmansk County Birth Registry. Methods: The study population consisted of all live-and stillbirths registered in the Murmansk County Birth Registry during 2006-2011 (n = 52,806). We excluded multiple births, births prior to 22 and after 45 completed weeks of gestation, infants with congenital malformations, and births with missing information regarding gestational age (a total of n = 3,666) and/or the studied characteristics (n = 2,356). Possible associations between maternal socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics, maternal pre-pregnancy characteristics, pregnancy characteristics, and PM were studied by multivariable logistic regression. Crude and adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results: Of the 49,140 births eligible for prevalence analysis, 338 were identified as perinatal deaths (6.9 per 1,000 births). After adjustment for other factors, maternal low education level, prior preterm delivery, spontaneous or induced abortions, antepartum hemorrhage, antenatally detected or suspected fetal growth retardation, and alcohol abuse during pregnancy all significantly increased the risk of PM. We observed a higher risk of PM in unmarried women, as well as overweight or obese mothers. Maternal underweight reduced the risk of PM. Conclusions: Our results suggest that both social and medical factors are important correlates of perinatal mortality in Northwest Russia.

    • Associations between obesity and socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics vary between populations. Exploring such differences should throw light on factors related to obesity. We examined associations between general obesity (GO, defined by body mass index) and abdominal obesity (AO, defined by waist-to-hip ratio) and sex, age, socio-economic characteristics (education, financial situation, marital status), smoking and alcohol consumption in women and men aged 40-69 years from the Know Your Heart study (KYH, Russia, N = 4121, 2015-2018) and the seventh Tromso Study (Tromso7, Norway, N = 17,646, 2015-2016). Age-standardized prevalence of GO and AO was higher in KYH compared to Tromso7 women (36.7 vs. 22.0% and 44.2 vs. 18.4%, respectively) and similar among men (26.0 vs. 25.7% and 74.8 vs. 72.2%, respectively). The positive association of age with GO and AO was stronger in KYH vs. Tromso7 women and for AO it was stronger in men in Tromso7 vs. KYH. Associations between GO and socio-economic characteristics were similar in KYH and Tromso7, except for a stronger association with living with spouse/partner in KYH men. Smoking had a positive association with AO in men in Tromso7 and in women in both studies. Frequent drinking was negatively associated with GO and AO in Tromso7 participants and positively associated with GO in KYH men. We found similar obesity prevalence in Russian and Norwegian men but higher obesity prevalence in Russian compared to Norwegian women. Other results suggest that the stronger association of obesity with age in Russian women is the major driver of the higher obesity prevalence among them compared to women in Norway.

    • High-entropy Alloys (HEAs) are considered prospective materials demonstrating the new approach of alloy design creating new compositions for harsh conditions. However, searching for alloy chemical composition providing the best material properties is a costly process. Additive manufacturing (AM) can be an effective technique for adjusting the alloy composition by using several initial materials. The powder bed fusion (PBF) AM process allows the printing of solid parts using powder blends. In the present study, the CrFeCoNi(Al,Ti) HEAs were printed by the PBF technique using the blends of three powders. The structural and phase investigations revealed the chemical inhomogeneity in the materials that led to the new phase formations affecting the mechanical characteristics. The high-temperature annealing at 1200 °C can be considered a post-treatment process for the printed alloys as a homogenization process while the annealing at a lower temperature of 800 °C initiates the decomposition of the initially formed f.c.c. phase.

    • This revision of the classification of eukaryotes follows that of Adl et al., 2012 [J. Euk. Microbiol. 59(5)] and retains an emphasis on protists. Changes since have improved the resolution of many nodes in phylogenetic analyses. For some clades even families are being clearly resolved. As we had predicted, environmental sampling in the intervening years has massively increased the genetic information at hand. Consequently, we have discovered novel clades, exciting new genera and uncovered a massive species level diversity beyond the morphological species descriptions. Several clades known from environmental samples only have now found their home. Sampling soils, deeper marine waters and the deep sea will continue to fill us with surprises. The main changes in this revision are the confirmation that eukaryotes form at least two domains, the loss of monophyly in the Excavata, robust support for the Haptista and Cryptista. We provide suggested primer sets for DNA sequences from environmental samples that are effective for each clade. We have provided a guide to trophic functional guilds in an appendix, to facilitate the interpretation of environmental samples, and a standardized taxonomic guide for East Asian users.

    • Optical properties of ferromagnetic half-metallic full-Heusler Co2FeGe alloy are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Co2FeGe thin films were obtained by DC magnetron sputtering and show the saturation magnetization at T = 10 K of m approximate to 5.6 mu(B)/f.u:, close to the value predicted by the Slater-Pauling rule. First-principles calculations of the electronic structure and the dielectric tensor are performed using the full-potential linearized-augmented-plane-wave method in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA + U approximation. The measured interband optical conductivity spectrum for the alloy exhibits a strong absorption band in the 1-4 eV energy range with pronounced fine structure, which agrees well with the calculated half-metallic spectrum of the system, suggesting a near perfect spin-polarization in the material.

  • Single-molecule detection and identification of multiple species by multiparameter fluorescence detection

    • Two general strategies are introduced to identify and quantify single molecules in dilute solutions by employing a spectroscopic method for data registration and specific burst analysis, denoted multiparameter fluorescence detection (MFD). MFD uses pulsed excitation and time-correlated single-photon counting to simultaneously monitor the evolution of the eight-dimensional fluorescence information (fundamental anisotropy, fluorescence lifetime, fluorescence intensity, time, excitation spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, fluorescence quantum yield, distance between fluorophores) in real time and allows for selection of specific events for subsequent analysis. Using the multiple fluorescence dimensions, we demonstrate a dye labeling scheme of oligonucleotides, by which it is possible to identify and separate 16 different compounds in the mixture via their characteristic pattern by MFD. Such identification procedures and multiplex assays with single-molecule sensitivity may have a great impact on screening of species and events that do not lend themselves so easily to amplification, such as disease-specific proteins and their interactions.
