  • Circular Business Models for the Electric Vehicle Battery Second Life : Navigating Battery Ecosystem Actors Towards Circularity
  • 2024
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The electrification of vehicles has become a critical means to achieve climate-neutral transportation. As more electric vehicles (EV) are adopted, an increasing number of lithiumion batteries will be utilized, inevitably experiencing capacity degradation over time. Retaining the value of these retired batteries through remanufacturing, reusing, and repurposing to create a second life holds significant environmental and economic benefits. However, many companies within the battery ecosystem struggle to capitalize on this opportunity due to a lack of business insight and suitable business models tailored to their operational contexts. The ReCreate (Second Life Management of Electric Vehicle Batteries) research project was initiated to address these industrial needs through close collaboration with selected companies in the battery ecosystem. The project aims to define appropriate circular business models, methods, and processes to guide battery ecosystem actors in developing and implementing electric vehicle battery second life solutions, thereby advancing circularity around batteries and climate-neutral objectives. This handbook represents the culmination of three years of research within the ReCreate project. Its purpose is to present a simplified and practical overview of project outcomes across a series of key chapters. Comprising six chapters, the handbook will begin by discussing barriers and enablers, followed by circular business models and battery ecosystem management. It will then delve into design principles and performance monitoring guidelines, concluding with an integrated framework for second life and circular solutions for EV batteries. Each chapter briefly presents the main findings of the theme and concludes with discussion questions. The discussion questions include suggestions for relevant templates for workshops, and all templates are conveniently provided in the appendix for practical application. These templates serve as boundary objects, offering a starting point for internal and external cross-functional and cross-organizational dialogues within the electric vehicle battery ecosystem. They facilitate discussions and collaborations among various stakeholders, fostering alignment and synergy in developing circular business models for the second life of EV batteries.  By facilitating reflection on current business strategies, needs, and pain points, the handbook aims to aid in the definition of future second life business strategies. We anticipate that this handbook will serve as a valuable resource for actors within the EV battery ecosystem, supporting their journey towards climate-neutral transportation.

  • Enabling battery circularity : Unlocking circular business model archetypes and collaboration forms in the electric vehicle battery ecosystem
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Technological forecasting & social change. - : Elsevier Inc.. - 0040-1625 .- 1873-5509. ; 199
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Achieving battery circularity is crucial for meeting the targets of net-zero emission vehicles by 2030 and enabling climate-neutral transportation by 2050. To facilitate this transition, firms operating in the electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem must reassess their value creation, capture, and delivery methods. Although EV battery second life presents a promising solution for circularity, many vehicle manufacturers and stakeholders in the battery ecosystem struggle to adapt their organizations internally and externally due to a lack of insights into suitable circular business models. The purpose of this study is to identify viable archetypes of circular business models for EV battery second life and examine their implications on company collaborations within the EV battery ecosystem. Three main archetypes of circular business models are identified (i.e., extending, sharing, and looping business models) and further divided into eight sub-archetypes. These models are elucidated in terms of key business model dimensions, including value proposition, value co-creation, value delivery, and value capture. The paper provides visual representations of the necessary interactions and collaborations among companies in the EV battery ecosystem to effectively implement the proposed business model archetypes. This research contributes to the theory of circular business models in general, with specific relevance to EV battery circularity.

  • Second life use of Li-ion batteries in the heavy-duty vehicle industry : Feasibilities of remanufacturing, repurposing, and reusing approaches
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production and Consumption. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 2352-5509. ; 42, s. 351-366
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates, the efficient management of end-of-life lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries becomes a pressing concern. This case study investigates sustainable second life approaches for Li-ion batteries within a leading manufacturing company in the heavy-duty vehicle industry. Employing an exploratory methodology, the study evaluates three distinct circularity approaches for second life applications: remanufacturing, repurposing, and reusing. Based on a financial model and sustainability metrics, remanufacturing emerged as the most economically viable and environmentally sustainable strategy for the company. The study also explores supplementary approaches, such as repurposing used batteries for smaller power applications and reusing them in large-scale Energy Storage Systems (ESS). Regulatory inconsistencies in battery second life are identified as a significant barrier to widespread implementation. The study concludes by advocating for a multi-stakeholder ecosystem approach and calls for the establishment of universal circularity regulations to streamline the second life of Li-ion batteries.

  • Cultural sensemaking of corporate social responsibility : A dyadic view of Russian-Finnish business relationships
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 101, s. 153-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • International Management (IM) needs a better understanding of how managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make sense of cultural differences in international business relationships, especially regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR) in relationships between firms from emerging and developed countries. We address this lacuna by uncovering how dyads of Russian and Finnish SME managers, engaged in mutual international business relationships, construct their understanding of CSR. The findings indicate that conceptualizations of CSR are embedded both in SME managers' cultural backgrounds and in the contextual environment. This extends previous research on the role of CSR in IM and respond to calls to study the microfoundations of CSR and internationalization, adding to the sparse knowledge of CSR in cross-cultural SME settings.

  • Artificial intelligence ‐ driven sustainable development : Examining organizational, technical, and processing approaches to achieving global goals
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Development. - 0968-0802 .- 1099-1719.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents a comprehensive literature review using a systematic approach to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting sustainable development in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The systematic review approach was applied to collect and analyze topics, and the literature search was conducted in two stages, encompassing 57 articles that met the research requirements. Our analysis reveals that AI's contribution to sustainability is concentrated within three key areas: organizational, technical, and processing aspects. The organizational aspect focuses on the integration of AI in companies and industries, addressing barriers to implementation and the relationship between companies, partners, and customers. The technical aspect highlights the development of AI algorithms that can address global challenges and contribute to the growth of stability and development in society. The processing aspect emphasizes the internal transformation of companies, their business models, and strategies in response to AI integration. Our proposed conceptual model outlines the essential elements organizations must consider when incorporating AI into their sustainability efforts, such as strategic alignment, infrastructure development, change management, and continuous improvement. By addressing these critical aspects, organizations can harness the potential of AI to drive positive social, environmental, and economic outcomes, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the SDGs. The model serves as a comprehensive framework for organizations seeking to leverage AI for sustainable development, but it should be adapted to individual contexts to ensure its relevance and effectiveness.

  • Medical technology innovation ecosystems : factors influencing the formation of new companies
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on how the medical technology (MedTech) innovationecosystems contribute to the formation of start-ups. An innovation ecosysteminvolves collaboration and the exchange of resources in order to stimulate its owndevelopment and change over time. The MedTech innovation ecosystem ischaracterized by a large number of innovations, which are more concentrated inthe pharmaceutical industry, biotech, medical devices, and healthcare informationtechnology fields. Existing ecosystem studies offer a fairly diverse understandingof the formation goals, development parameters, and other parameters, which areoften inaccessible to an external observer. Understanding the internal processestypical of successful MedTech innovative ecosystems contributes to the adaptationof best practices for developing innovative ecosystems, reducing the financial, time, and human resources spent, and developing the economy. As a result of theactivity of innovative MedTech companies, customers receive new equipment, methods of treatment, and rehabilitation of patients, reducing the costs andworkload for medical personnel. The MedTech innovation ecosystem is explored in four Papers and anextended summary in this thesis. Since the study aimed to increase knowledgeabout how MedTech innovation ecosystems contribute to an increase in thenumber of start-ups, qualitative research strategy and content and within, crosscase, and narrative methods of analyzing the collected information were chosen. The studied phenomena were investigated from the point of view of subjectivity, that is, the interpretation of the past events of the participants and their personalview of the actions taken. The results of the study were the identification of two key parameters thatcontribute to the formation and successful development of MedTech innovativestart-ups, namely the provision of public support and the possibility of cooperation.Public and private support includes financial resources at various stages ofcompany development, including support for basic and applied research, provisionof grants at the stage of company formation for marketing research, a grants search, company registration, other loans, and grants for company formation. Nonfinancial types of support include providing access to the infrastructure of theinnovation ecosystem, which includes laboratories, specialized equipment, trainingcourses, entrepreneur support programs, etc. Collaboration involves leveraging theinternal connections of the innovation ecosystem and providing access to otherinnovation ecosystems to work on projects that cross the interests of several areas,as well as MedTech innovation ecosystems in other countries. This thesis brings more clarity to the process of formation and developmentof the MedTech innovation ecosystem and proposes a model of a successfulecosystem that could be claimed by policymakers who make decisions about thedevelopment of the industry. Moreover, the thesis offers several successful casesthat consider the non-obvious benefits that start-ups from innovativeecosystems can receive and use as an additional benefit for their development.KEYWORDS: innovation ecosystem, medical technologies, start-ups, innovation

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New technologies are at the heart of industry transformation. Virtual and augmented reality companies provide fundamentally new ways of communication, treatment, education, and specialist training within the medical industry. However, business models for new ventures that target the medical industry have received scant attention within academic research. Using a multiple case study approach, we analyze how virtual and augmented reality firms create value for their customers in the medical industry. In all, we have studied eight companies that offer different types of solutions for their target segments. The results of the analysis are four design elements consisting of twelve positions and three design themes that define the similarities and differences between the business models for the companies. We contribute to existing research within the field by analyzing business models of the investigated companies using a design approach, classifying the virtual and augmented reality companies, and analyzing the role of new technology in the development of the medical industry.

  • Ingår i: International journal of value chain management. - : INDERSCIENCE ENTERPRISES LTD. - 1741-5357 .- 1741-5365. ; 12:1, s. 45-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the conservative business ecosystem and to identify opportunities for new companies to create value. Authors used a design-oriented case study with a start-up concentrating on the commercialisation of the university research. The authors consider a novel business model used by the start-up company. By analysing the model, methods are proposed for accelerating the company and the business ecosystem. The results indicate that cooperation between the product suppliers and opinion leaders plays a key role in supporting the biomedical business ecosystem. The probability of success for a new product depends on the interest of the professional community. The results add to the existing knowledge on business models for start-up companies to succeed without business expertise and extensive business network. The transformation of customers to partners stimulates the emergence of a new business model that takes into account the new role of a 'customer-partner'.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 15:10
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cruise shipping industry has existed for centuries. However, sustainability is a relatively new trend that could make a big difference and someday impact the industry. A growing body of research on sustainable cruise tourism includes studying changes among industry stakeholders, internal and external processes, and more. However, until now, there have been no comprehensive and systematic reviews of the academic literature on this topic and proposals for future research areas. The sample for our research consists of 56 articles structured into the following themes and subthemes: (1) corporate social responsibility (public interaction and emissions management); (2) territory management (collaboration with stakeholders and infrastructure development); (3) training in sustainable behavior (passengers, ship personnel, and other stakeholders). These themes fully explore the various use cases for sustainable cruises, forming a conceptual framework for understanding trends for the industry's sustainable development. We direct the attention of other researchers to the following areas for further research: GHG emissions of cruising; biodiversity impacts; quantitative understanding of the target audience and their participation in sustainability financing; in-depth understanding of the reasons for cooperation between stakeholders; identifying the true motivation for participation in sustainable development; the long-term trends; and how the shipping industry is adapting to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation and Knowledge. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 2530-7614 .- 2444-569X. ; 8:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The healthcare industry is nowadays increasingly forced to adapt to new fast-paced changes, despite its conservatism. Indeed, the number of new technology entrepreneurs and technology value is increasing. In this study, we use modern literature and illustrative cases to identify patterns of technological value creation in the healthcare industry with the purpose to form an understanding of the challenges and opportunities for technology entrepreneurs. Hence, we propose a new challenges-opportunities framework for understanding technology entrepreneurship (i.e., technology innovation, technology proactivity, and technology risk-taking) as a foundation for value creation concerning the needs of patients, medical personnel and hospitals, and the whole industry. We also end the article by outlining practical implications at the micro-level (i.e., patient advocacy and technology-enabled engagement strategies), meso-level (i.e., digital health solutions and motivation for collaboration), and macro-level (i.e., trust building and infrastructure).

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This paper focuses on medical device university spin-offs (USOs), taking into account the peculiarities of financial and nonfinancial support and intellectual property rights (IPRs). The authors declare that these parameters play a significant role in business development at the early stages. Design/methodology/approach: This empirical data consist of individual and group interviews in Finland and Sweden, which are later inductively analyzed. Findings: The results show that public financial support contributes to the formation and start of sales stages in small countries and local markets. However, at the validation stage, approaches for supporting entrepreneurship in the field of medical devices may differ. The ownership of IPRs assists in the development of entrepreneurship in the region due to the transfer of research results and researchers to the industry and increases the number of spin-offs and the cooperation of universities with business. Originality/value: This contribution is in the identification of the key parameters for the formation, support and development of the USOs from the point of view of the availability of financial resources and the ownership of IPRs.

  • Ingår i: Technology in society. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0160-791X .- 1879-3274. ; 66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial intelligence (AI) is of great interest to researchers and practitioners as a means of achieving the necessary progress in the pharmaceutical industry. However, the role of AI and ways of transforming companies are not well studied. The purpose of the paper is to identify exactly how AI affects the key and support business processes of pharmaceutical companies. We offer a qualitative interview study of five large, five medium, and five small pharmaceutical companies. Based on scarce literature on the role of AI in the pharmaceutical industry, we considered which business processes are subject to transform within it and how they do so. We determine that small pharma companies significantly change research and development, master data management, analysis and reporting, and human resource business processes under the influence of AI. Large pharma companies use AI to transform production, sales, marketing, and analysis business processes. In turn, medium-sized companies are in the middle and individually transform their business processes depending on their specialization.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Empirical International Entrepreneurship. - : Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. - 9783030689728 ; , s. 199-215
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past three decades, the domain of international entrepreneurship (IE) has matured and developed into a field of study. However, there are still areas where both thematically and especially methodologically the field would benefit from more pluralistic approaches. Especially comparative IE studies have been suggested in review studies to provide substantial promise for added contribution to the field, and novel methodological choices based on content analysis and secondary data have been called for in IE research. This study aims to respond to those omissions in the IE domain, by conducting a comparative study of Finnish and Russian international entrepreneurship through a discourse analysis supported by primary data in the form of interviews of Finnish and Russian entrepreneurs. The COVID-19 pandemic arriving globally in the first half of 2020 provides a timely topic in which to conduct such a study. As a result, we analyse the discourse in Finnish and Russian media about entrepreneurship before (2019) and during (2020) the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in each country. We find both similarities and differences in the tone and level of the discussion, and surprisingly the interviewed entrepreneurs are rather critical of the media discussion related to entrepreneurship in the time of the pandemic in their respective countries. We consider the theoretical and methodological implications arising from these results and suggest that the IE field would benefit from the added methodological richness that content analysis and discursive research methods can provide.

    • As the passenger transportation sector is disrupted by the emergence of myriad technological and business model innovations such as automated mobility, shared mobility and Mobility-as-a-Service, new and improved governance models are required. The COVID-19 pandemic can be seen as yet another disruption, stressing the need for a more proactive and inclusive governance. This article aims to juxtapose the need for collaborative, adaptive and outcome-based governance models in the mobility sector before and after the pandemic started. First, we analyse the governance needs and trends related to mobility innovations that were identified during two workshops with public and private actors in the mobility sector and through an extensive research of new governance models already applied in many European countries. Second, we analyse the impact of COVID-19 on mobility governance, focusing specifically on mobility innovations. Based on the analysis, we draw conclusions regarding the long-term trends in how the governance of mobility innovations will be affected by the ongoing pandemic. © 2022 The Authors
